We used to love going to McKenzie River in Bozeman. At that time, it was "the" place to go for great pizza. We've been to the Spokane location and there is one thing I've learned.....do NOT go to a pizza place for anything but pizza. Recently our party came in after a day of outdoor activities. I noticed it wasn't very crowded. Our server was attentive and friendly. We ordered the boom boom shrimp appetizer. The boom boom sauce looked very similar to fry sauce or thousand Island dressing. They did not appear to be "house breaded". I ordered the Italian chicken panino. Rather than a full chicken breast, it was a small portion of sliced chicken. The bread was not what I would consider to be cibatta bread or hot-pressed. It was a disappointment. The California Burger wasn't much better. Two people in our party ordered small pizzas. Great choice! They were both delicious and the servings generous. Because it wasn't crowded, our food came on quickly and piping hot, which was appreciated. When we return, we Will definitely focus on the pizza side of this establishment. read more

We eat at this restaurant fairly often in the last few years, because we live walking distance from it. And, as a very experienced customer, I can assure you, that the experience after each visit is exactly the same and never changes - the food is exceptional and service is pretty bad. The place is pretty empty every time we come, but it takes or ever to be served. Veeeeryyyyyy sloooooowwwww service, terribly slow. I'm talking about it taking longer than an hour to get 2 burgers with beer! Every single time! Also, pretty ten orders get messed up, items being forgotten, nobody comes to check on drinks, we have to wait for a long time before somebody would walk by s we can order more drinks or if we need something else. We often come with little kids and it is absolutely impossible to keep them in a good mood for such a long time. But the food is awesome every time, that's why I give 4 stars. I believe that the food is the most important part of the restaurant, and you guy s never disappoint. Please keep up the good job and change your management and serving employees. Service was great. The table was sticky so I got a wet paper towel to make the seating experience more pleasant. Our waiter made some suggestions and we tried the Huckleberry Trail Dip from the summer menu. It was amazing and the highlight dish of the day. The nut and berry on top of the hot cheese dip gave some delicious contrasts. The small sized pizza was pretty good as well. It is unfortunate that the pizza menu is currently not accessible here. We should have stopped ordering after the pizza and Huckleberry Trail Dip (again, yum!). It was plenty for 3 of us. We added another appetizer, chicken quesadilla, which was not our favorite and was unnecessary considering the amount of food. We were clued into this location by some local Eags students. I originally planned to dine out upon arrival to my hotel, but then decided against it and did Door Dash instead. I enjoy a good wood fired pizza! MacKenzie Pizza did not disappoint! I had the Harvest Cherry Pizza on a gluten free crust! Here are the ingredients as shown on the menu: Olive oil & garlic, mozzarella, prosciutto, goat cheese & cherries, topped with arugula tossed in citrus-honey vinaigrette. (cal 200-420/slice) I omitted the prosciutto. Let me start off by saying, I definitely think this would have been perfection eaten in house and piping hot! By the time my pizza arrived to my hotel, it was barely warm. I opted to eat it that way rather than microwave it since I knew that would greatly affect the crust consistency! Not MacKenzie's fault or my delivery person's fault, just the nature of the beast when you have foot delivered. The various flavors are delectable together! Truly perfect! Every bite was enjoyable and just sat nicely on the palette! Gluten free crust was great and cooked just right! I normally do not eat dessert, but decided to try the Doc Holliday. Ingredients: White chocolate macadamia nut cookies served in a piping hot skillet with huckleberry ice cream & house-made huckleberry sauce. (cal 1930) I mainly ordered this because of the huckleberries, which are usually only found around this area! Since having dessert isn't a norm for me, to say that I was sorely disappointed in this is an understatement. First off, it seemed to me, that the cookie was pre-made dough that had been cut into slices and arranged in a tin foil pan, baked. Not very much taste at all in the cookie-not worth any calories, for sure. Vanilla ice cream was standard and the huckleberry sauce was so sweet I couldn't eat it. I was able to taste it and it seemed to me, like the huckleberries had been freeze-dried? I'm not sure. They didn't taste fresh to me. I ended up throwing the dessert away. Next time, I will dine in and order the huckleberry cheesecake, if it's made in-house and if I am able to order fresh huckleberries instead of the sauce. If the cheesecake is pre-made and I cannot get fresh huckleberries, I will skip dessert altogether. Overall, my experience was fantastic and I still give the pizza 5 stars! after all, I really don't expect a pizza place to have stellar desserts. read more

my wife and i come her once in a while for lunch ,they have a good lunch specials,today i tried the new ahi asian salad ,which wasnt bad but certainly needs some adjustments ,for those who eat kale know its very ........chewy ...but that is rectified by massaging the kale for a few minutes which softens it and makes it more palatable ,also this salad had brussel sprouts ,except half the raw sprouts i got were the root end and uneditable ,plus the root was not well trimed 4 very this slices of ahi came w/the salad and mandrain orange slices ,service was good read more

I've been coming to McKenzie River for two years when visiting my kids as they go to college up there. The food used to be excellent the service the same and it was a great place for us to go with a group. We tried to go in on Saturday at 5 o'clock. There were plenty of open tables. We were a party of seven and I offered to split in half as there were probably eight tables open for four people. The lady at the front desk told us no it would be over an hour IF she could seat us at all! I asked if we could sit at the bar as there were plenty of open tables there I was told no. It almost appeared as if she didn't want to serve us. I had six college kids with me and I'm a grown adult. We ended up ordering pizza and taking it to a local park and having a picnic and a nicer time than we would've had there, but I was so disappointed by the service at a restaurant that we had come to Love. I'm not sure we'll be back. Also the pizza isn't nearly as good as it used to be. read more

We had a basketball game at nearby Peperzak MS and decided to get some food in the area before heading home. Mackenzie River was next to Safeway so we tried it since we needed groceries too. It was Sunday at noon, so not too busy. They had NFL and NHL on the tvs. Cool trees throughout the restaurant. I ordered the Smokin' Q pizza, it was BBQ sauce, pulled pork, bacon, spicy sausage and smoked turkey. It sounded unique and original and full of meat! It was incredibly good! I eat a lot of pizza and this one was memorable. Wife got a Cobb salad and kid got hamburger sliders, they both said it was great. Bartender was funny and gave great service. read more

Have attempted to eat there twice in the past 45 days. Both results were the same. Completely invisible. Both attempts stood at hostess station waiting to be seated. Staff chatted, walked back and forth (in a completely empty restaurant) without acknowledgment. I guess if you want your restaurant to fail, that is a way to approach. Both times stood for at least ten minutes. Really quite puzzled on how this place is managed and operated. Best of luck to them, I wont be returning. read more

Went to Mackenzie River tonight for dinner with friends. The teenage hostess told us we'd have to wait for a table by the door because of my "dog." I told her that my hypoallergenic service dog and I had eaten there before and were usually seated in the back, out of the way. She said the manager on duty made that rule - so I asked if I could speak with them or could she ask them to read the rules on the ADA dot gov site. She said no, it was his rule, and she could refuse service to whoever she wanted, so we were welcome to leave. As we left, my friend went back in to let the hostess know that wasn't ok and that she would be contacting the manager - the hostess was dismissive and unaffected by my friend's statement. No one wants to take a service dog everywhere. I don't bring my service dog with me because it's fun or because I want to drag a dog everywhere. I need him. I'll never return to Mackenzie River Pizza. Their actions were illegal, unprofessional, and insulting. read more

Did not look at order before I left as I was hungry and it was dark and raining. Was home by the time I realized my tomato basil did not have any basil on it. 25$ is too much for a simple pizza that misses main ingredients. Went here with the family recently ordered pizza and it was pretty good though it was a little greasy. We've been here before and the food wasn't so great but this time was much better. The service was average though we didn't get refills on our drinks, but they were helpful and good with the kids. I get fish and chips at almost every new restaurant I try if it's on the menu but these fish and chips were definitely in the top 3 of all time and I've tried a lot of different places. Order pizza and enjoy the interior! We ordered 1/2 Hot Hawaiian and 1/2 Sequoia. The two complemented each other very well but with totally different tastes. I can see a few others on the menu that I'd be willing to try, so you'll probably find something to like. The Sequoia's fresh pesto and toasted pine nuts might sound weird, but the taste is pretty good. I would have preferred artichokes that had a little more substance. Mine were rather wimpy. The Hot Hawaiian had a nice kick to it. Although I didn't taste a lot of the ingredients that were supposed to be toppings, the overall flavor was definitely satisfying. Great place for beer and pizza. However they also have a fairly extensive selection of other foods on the menu. They serve beer on tap, some from local breweries. I ordered the Iron Goat stout which tasted like a smooth Spokane version of Guinness. Draft beers come in three sizes (regular, large and 34oz). This was a pizza night so we ordered the hot Hawaiian and the Sequoia. Both were very tasty and it was a pleasant surprise to have artichokes and pine nuts on my pizza. The parking lot is small unless you use the Albertsons parking lot which is attached and has lots of room. There are quite a few big screen TVs although there are places in the restaurant where you will not have a good view of any screen. For quality pizza, this restaurant is quite good value as most of the large pizzas are between $22 and $25. Check out the menu and then head out for a fun evening. read more

Disappointing. Google says they do not take reservations. And with a party of 12, they could not accommodate us even if we split into 2 groups. The host was clearly stressed, indicated they were under staffed and didn't want any more customers. Management is probably not great if you can't accomodate customers. read more

We had to take our payments to the waitress, coffee cold and tasted horrible. Hard to get a new cup when you never see the waitress. Got angry when one of our guests was slow to give her her order so she walked off and came back about 15 minutes later. We usually tip high however not today. Restaurant about 25% full. I'm giving this only a one star, for this one visit. I've always had good service and food from Mackenzie. However this time, not so much. I had clam chowder and it was served luke warm at best. Sent it backs to be microwaved. Wasn't the same after that. Didn't eat it. The flat bread was very good. The other order was a burger. Server didn't ask how we wanted the meat....rare/medium rare/well done. It came out extremely rare. Felt bad that I had to once again, call the very young waitress back over to show her. There was no offer to replace it, take it off the ticket, or to refire the meat. Nothing. We didn't even eat it. 16 dollar hamburger that ended up in the trash. Next door there is a restaurant and bar, I'm going to opt for that place first in the future. I'm not happy with my visit. I may give them a try again, it not excited about it. We have had excellent salads at MacKenzie River and the french fries are the best of any restaurant! Yesterday we both had the Willow Creek sandwich and honestly, worst sandwich I've ever had. Too much bread, very low-quality turkey, the "bacon" is BACON BITS, not strips which is basically unforgiveable. The spinach added nothing and was a hassle because it kept falling out. Couldn't even taste the cheese. I ate maybe 20% of this sandwich. But the french fries were amazing!!! Just don't get that sandwich. read more

I came here with my family for my mom's birthday last week and thought it was overall a decent experience. I thought that my moscow mule was the best part. Ordered the nachos as an appetizer - the distribution of the toppings was not amazing and there were a lot of lonely chips and I know you know what I mean. The really great part is the HUGE menu selection. There are so many options to choose from it is actually quite difficuilt! I ordered the Bridger Salad and added roasted beets and was not very impressed. The chicken was cold and dry and the beets were pickled not roasted. Meh. I would come back to try a doover and some of the other food items on the menu again and it was definitely a great place for a larger group and to bring the kids. They had a prix fixe dinner menu for restaurant week. Had some good choices. My aunt and daughter went for that! Started with salads and then my aunt got the lime chicken and said it was quite tasty. My daughter had the meatloaf and the presentation was nice..... I had gluten free pizza (I have to say its always a plus when you can find a good gluten free pizza). Mine had mozzarella - only down fall is it was not fresh mozz. With pineapple, ham, and jalapeños. Spicy Hawaiian and it was good! My cousin had a chef salad and she went to town so it must have been good. If you order ginger ale and your bill comes and lists something like cock and bull that's what the categorize the ginger ale as..... Lol. If I need a gf pizza I will go back. I've always been little "meh" about Mackenzie River. It's not standout, but it's not terrible. Everything is completely average and what you would expect for an Applebee's-tiered establishment. The entrees will fill your belly. The prices may seem a bit high. I can think of a single dish to recommend, but I can't steer you clear of a bad one either. First, I love the decor. It is very PNW with nice pictures, snowshoes, skis, a boat, etc. The menu is not too imaginative, but they do have a poutine burger and a great salad selection. The salads should be bigger or in a bigger bowl. I got the beet salad with a burger for protein. I've been to the McKenzie River on the north end, but never this one. Solid food and drinks, as usual. The Fish & Chips is spice (yum!) enough that I alternate fish and fries but it is soooooo tasty. The fries this time, usually very good, were perfect. One piece of fish was sliced a bit too thick and did not cook through . . . this is a common complaint for me, and is IMHO too common at good restaurant, but everything else including service and wait time were great. read more

I was recently turned on to MacKenzie River Pizza through a series of charitable donations they made. The Thai pizza was a pleasant surprise. Unique and distinct, but certainly worth getting as an exercise in let's-get-a-little-nutty-and-try-something-new. Their more conventional pizzas are tasty, too. I have yet to try thin crust. The traditional is a light sour dough based crust with a doctored up red sauce with enough richness and flavor to want more, but not overly sweet or acidic. I would like to see the addition of an herb-based, thick focaccia bread to the sour dough cheese bread sticks appetizer. read more
