Our happy little group (22 people!!!) rolled in for lunch last Saturday afternoon. The hostess took that in stride and in a matter of two minutes came back with a happy smile and said "we have you all set up, please come with me" ... that's impressive ... 22 people during the weekend lunch rush. Big points, right off the bat! And, btw, we weren't shoved into some back room and jammed tight, this was main floor and in the bright light of day. Impressive, right? So, now let me guess, you want to know about the food? Let's start with the obvious ... yes, it was tasty and served up temperature appropriate and with plenty of visual appeal, so job well done to the kitchen. After all, we do also eat with our eyes. Our group took a mad run at just about every category on the menu and everything was equally well done. For myself, the Rancher's Pie (see my photo) just screamed "take me, take me!!!) so, I did and it was delicious! My wife ordered the Chicken Caprese and loved every bite. To our experience, and the rest of the group, everything on the plates, in the bowls, and the variety of beverage servings was spot on and lived up to the descriptions and images on the menu. The problem with the menu here is that there are so many things to want, you'll just have to go back several times to get to try them all. Now for the really good part. The service. When you go (notice that I didn't say "if you go") I highly recommend that you ask for Stacie! How one person can manage a mob like ours, get everything for everyone just perfectly, and do it all with a smile is one of the great mysteries of the cosmos. BUT, she DID IT ALL and never broke a sweat. The endless assortment of "can I get a refill, may I have some fry sauce, oops I spilled and need a cleanup" ... you know that list, and it did happen with us ... never fazed her one bit. You've just got to ask for her so you can get the experience for yourself. A bit more about Stacie, please bear with me ... when I had my wallet out, she noticed my military i.d. and asked me what branch I'd been in, and I told her "Army, thanks for asking." When she brought out my bill, there was a discount ... what a happy surprise, right? Yep, she's definitely well schooled in the fine art of customer service excellence. When I mentioned that one of my grandies was celebrating a birthday, Stacie was all over that like a magician with a wand! After the entree service was complete, she brought out a house birthday treat (with five spoons so all the kids could share in the bounty ... see my photo, please.) It seems the house has a special way of helping folks celebrate special occasions. You'll have to go in person and while you're there, you can ask about that for yourself. Go ahead, ask. You'll be very happily surprised, I promise you. But, ya gotta ASK about it cuz there's a secret that I'm not sharing here. But all good things must end and this one does with a few other points for you. The parking lot is huge and easy in-easy out on a busy north town artery. The ambience is well lit, impeccably clean, every member of the staff radiates a "glad you could join us" attitude, and there's a general sense of "we're happy to see you here and we want to make it great for you." Now my friends, I've done my job and I've given you the lowdown skinny on The Onion in northtown Spokane. It's up to you to saddle up and head on out. One suggestion, though. Found this restaurant while visiting Spokane for a conference. It was within walking distance from my hotel. The food was really tasty and the staff was very nice. I tried the onion rings - I almost had to at a place called The Onion lol. They were delish. My Caesar salad was good, drinks were good too. Went out for dinner on a Saturday and had a relaxing time. We sat in the bar, it was comfortable and the server was attentive, the harvest spice espresso martini was perfection, farmer's pie was great, perfect portions, and the steak bites for appetizer was like a chicken fried steak, but waaay better. My experience here was so-so, it is not a place for convo it's pretty loud. Our server would check on us then when we ask him for something he forgets. My friend was having a birthday and she created a special birthday shot with sprinkles and everything! She was super attentive, friendly and remembered our requests down to the tiniest details. Extremely disappointed in the service & quality of the food. Not sure what's going on here, but has totally gone downhill over the past few years. Hostess/server was rude when seating us because we had a disabled person who couldn't climb the steps up to available seating. So, ended up in the bar area, which was fine but the floor was filthy under the tables. We ordered French Onion soup, Shepherd's pie, Green Chile Burger and Salmon dinner. Everything was fine except the burger was pretty small for the price. Also, the salmon was VERY undercooked, seared outside and totally RAW inside. I eat sushi, but we're not eating raw fish from here! Server got the manager who only made an excuse that all pieces are cooked to temperature. Excuse me!?! How is raw fish cooked to temp. My friend definitely was not eating it. Manager did offer other things but my friend was in preparation for a procedure and couldn't eat other things on the menu. So, she just declined any other food. My friend was never rude or complained, just let them know that the fish was improperly cooked. Not once was there an apology AND, to rub salt in the wound, charged her $4.00 for a plain iced tea that never got refilled! This place is a twin to the OG downtown location. Every time we are on the Northside, which is infrequent, we pick a place to eat out. Last night that place was The Onion Taphouse. We were promptly greeted and sat. There was a large party next to us but it did not impede our server from giving good service. We ordered the Fried Cheese for an App -12/10! My kids love these, and the marinara is just tangy enough to provide a break from the richness and fattiness of the cheese. My son ordered the baked spaghetti, which he gets every time, and gave it high marks. Bottom line I was jealous! They had a seasonal menu and I ordered the 505, which was a burger with Hatch Chiles, bacon, and Garlic Aoili. It was cooked to a perfect medium-rare, which never happens in Spokane so cudos to the cooks. All-in-all a good visit to a local stalwart. read more

I really want to like this place. Like I'm trying really hard. That being said, the service here really sucks. The person seating us dumped water on us from the last person who sat there's cup that she didn't clear off, with her L belly, cup had backwash in it to. She apologized once and handed us napkins, then went to have one of her stand around and do nothings. There is a lot of that here. The waitress was amazing, really good. I think she was the boss, but the lady that dumped water on us hid it by leaving the scene which made it look like to her boss we did it. I didn't have the heart to add to this waitresses plate, when they are good you need to keep them there. Don't want to overwhelm her more. Food was food I could cook at home in 20 mins. Ordered fettuccine with chicken thru Door Dash. The order came in a small 4"x5" container, similar to a "doggy bag" type container. The meal was all squished down to make it fit. On top were 2 small pieces of THINLY sliced French bread, 1/4" thick. No regard to presentation when the meal was received. $18 meal in a small takeout container. SO disappointed in the Onion. I've been wanting to try The Onion for a couple years. Mind you, we only come "into town" about every other month and usually are heading back home before I think about stopping there. But, today's the day and it was worth stopping. The place is vibrant, noisy, but still welcoming. The fact that it's a "bar and grill" explains the noise level - mostly from the in-house music playing. But, we were seated comfortably, handed menus and taken care of right away. I ordered the Jalapeño Bacon Burger. I'd asked for the bun to be "toasted well," and they delivered. The burger was delicious with spicy hits of jalapeño and crispy bacon. The sea salt fries were exceptionally good, too. My wife ordered the Halibut and Chips. I got to taste the halibut and it, too, was excellent - GREAT (house-made?) tartar sauce with it as well. Service was friendly, but a bit slow. Considering it was almost 2 in the afternoon, the place was still hopping. The waitress did apologize and thanked us for our patience so I can't fault her too much. Prices are a little higher than you'd expect, but an overall good place to stop. We'll be back. read more

I went here on a recommendation. A recommendation from someone I trusted but didn't really trust their culinary tastes.. So I came in thinking cool but you know. I was floored by the restaurant. From the hostess at the door to literally every other service focused employee up into one of the owners Robin. I do not say this lightly. There's something special here! Truly. For food I had an amazing pea salad paired with a watermelon cantaloupe feta, like crazy fresh and good. Then under recommendation from Robin had the Turkey club. I love turkey and BLTs but don't like them as a club.... But seriously the fresh veg, tomato, and the Devine I'm saying Devine Turkey just set this off in only the best way. Listen or listen but you won't be disappointed or let down by the current Onion. Robin has really given it the energy and focus a restaurant of this caliber desires. So if you desire solid fresh food and condone who really cares at the top and is felt within the employee base.., THIS is your restaurant! Stopped in on a walk back to the overpriced hotel food. My husband enjoyed the pot roast sandwich and I really enjoyed the spicy Thai chicken wrap. The service was quick and attentive as well as friendly. We were here on a Tuesday for lunch and it wasn't overly crowded. We were seated at a booth by the window and so didn't really see much of the decor other than an intricate tin roof with decadent lighting. Had a serving which turned out to be enormous of huckleberry poundcake which was beyond affordable at $9...tons of ice cream...almost too much after such a large meal. I ordered using Uber eats and they didn't include any sauces even after added the sauces in the order twice, once in the sauce section and another on the extra details section. The lettuce they put on my burger was old and bad. When I called them back, I basically got a to sad to bad from the manager. She told me there was nothing she was able to do to about the issue. The service was fantastic, but unfortunately, the food didn't live up to expectations. I had the grilled salmon with double veggies, but both zucchini varieties were overpowered by so much garlic that I couldn't taste anything else--definitely not what I was hoping for! My husband ordered the crunchy prawns, which seemed more like shrimp, and the coleslaw that came with it was a letdown too. When we first moved here, all of our military friends swore up and down that The Onion was the best place in town. They couldn't stop raving about the jalapeño burger, claiming it was a must-try, and if we liked a low-key vibe, this was the spot. After our first visit, it became pretty clear our friends had probably only been there once. The Good: * Quiet Nights: When the dining area is actually open, it's a typically quiet restaurant. Those nights are rare, but they do exist. * Jalapeño Burger: It's good, but it's not the best burger in town. Think of it as a burger with a spicy personality crisis. * Bartender Nights: If you happen to catch one of those nights when only the bar is open, the bartender is a rockstar. He can mix any drink, knows the menu better than I know my own address, and always manages to make us laugh. The Bad: * Inattentive Staff: Most nights, the staff seems to have mastered the art of the disappearing act. No matter what we order, we end up there for an hour and a half to two hours. It's like they're trying to give us the full "waiting experience." * Menu Mediocrity: Aside from the jalapeño burger, the rest of the menu is a parade of mediocrity. Trust me, we've given it more than five tries. It's like they save all their culinary magic for that one burger. * Limited Seating and Noise: When only the bar is open, seating is scarce and the noise level rivals that of a rock concert. The main reason I go to a restaurant is to chat about the restaurant, but at The Onion, it's more like a game of charades with your dinner companions. * Overwhelming Menu: The menu has a dizzying array of options, and their recent update only added to the confusion. It's like a Where's Waldo of food choices. Overall, I can't recommend The Onion. I've sampled a good chunk of the menu, and it's all pretty meh. It's not the best food you can get in Spokane, and the price tag doesn't match the quality. The best hamburger I've ever had was purchased at the onion. I saw the place from the street that I was driving on and decided that I would give it a try. The service was good. They were friendly and they had 51 beers on tap! My recommendation is to not get onion rings with your burger because you only get a couple. Get the fries. I've been here in multiple occasions, because it's pretty convenient and usually meets a need. The service has always been great. To bring just attentive enough or going above and beyond the ask to make it a good experience. The food is alright. At the end of the day it's kind of like any other chain food you may have. It's not out of this world, but it's consistent, tastes good, and is fairly priced. I do love the French onion soup and the cougar gold cheese dip! We will certainly go back in the future! read more

The trick with the Turkey burger. For lunch I stopped here and tried their Turkey burger. The burger is described as being seasoned with rosemary and sage. There is a saying: iIf you don't know where you are going or what you are doing, get the hell out of the driver's seat. Turkey breast meat is a dry and a very, very lean meat and requires more seasoning than hamburgers. I usually add a few extra seasonings to the Turkey meat when making burgers. There is one word to describe their Turkey avocado burger with lettuce and tomato: YUCK. It simply needs work. You can do better and think salt , pepper, soy sauce, egg, a pinch of flour , rosemary and olive oil- to name a few. So if this is not feasible, then take it off the menu, but an I'll seasoned frozen patty with a hint of memory level sage and rosemary on the grill will not do. However, the onion rings were nicely done. The bar is a standard bar where the server greets you with a bar to the right when you enter. read more

We just received an order from The Onion. We ordered the pricey halibut and Chips, $42 for 3 small pieces. The first thing we saw was they only sent one order of the two we paid for. The halibut we got was totally over cooked and completely dried out, hence no flavor. We got a hold of them and they are sending out another order. But no meal together and a poor meal at that.
