This spot made me fall in love with Spokane's food scene. While I can't claim to have been to tons of restaurants in the area, this one made me decide I needed to come back to Spokane to get more of their amazing Corn Bread and try some other places in the area. Let me just say... their cornbread. So good. I was visiting on a work trip and I loved my experience at the restaurant so much I returned the next day with a friend also in town for work. The cornbread is like a dessert even if it's meant to be an appetizer. Now every time I come into town, even if I don't eat at the restaurant, I order at least two cornbreads to take home with me. I will say one time they did burn it and I hadn't realized it til I was already well on my way back to the west side. The most recent time I went about 3 weeks ago the cornbread was not burnt, but I feel like it wasn't AS good as I recalled the other 4 times I went to the restaurant. Next time I'm in the area, I'll opt to eat in the restaurant and enjoy it fresh! Every time I've been, I have had great service. The staff is always kind even if they're slammed! The first time I went I chatted with the bartender since I was alone and sat at the bar. They also have really great drinks! Finally, their bathrooms are nicely decorated! This review is an update. May 2026. I've been dining at Vieux Carre for several years. Generally with good success. However, on this occasion, I had a very bad experience, one that I feel is not a one off, but how the restaurant is now. I ordered their Gumbo bowl for lunch, along with a cocktail. Upon receiving it, I was shocked by the looks of it. It was dried out, pasty, looking like the leftovers from the night prior that had dried out and scraped up from the bottom of the pot. I asked the server what this was and he told me it was the gumbo. I told him gumbo does not look like what you are serving. My server's response? "Well, this is how we serve it now!" Like that all I was going to get from him. Well, their "new" gumbo tasted as bad as it looked. The over condensed stew was over salted. Just tasted like pasty crap. My good friend who dined with me was just shocked they would serve that dish to me. If you're planning on trying this restaurant, don't expect a good experience. So many good things happening here. First, I love the decor. It is very classy but not stuffy or intimidating. I have only seen New Orleans in pictures but they definitely have the right vibe here. Every employee here is super friendly and welcoming. It feels more like visiting good friends or family you actually like as opposed to going to a restaurant. And the food. First, props to this place for trying something different than basic boring blue collar diner. Spokane's food scene is just so meh, so I applaud their bravery. But it isn't just different, it is really good. Between a solid regular menu with options for just about anyone, including vegans or folks with allergies, and some really great off menu specials, there is just so much goodness! I especially like their gumbo. Solid, but of a kick, but fully focused on great flavors. I make a decent gumbo myself, but these guys go next level. I can't speak to "authenticity" having only been to the airport in New Orleans on a layover. But I will say that the food here will make just about anyone happy they came. Vieux Carré NOLA Kitchen is a rare find, New Orleans-inspired restaurant in downtown Spokane. That also explained, they really focus on bold and strong southern flavors. What we ordered: * Whipped Honey Cornbread: Seared edges, whipped honey butter, and scallions. Honestly addictive. Sweet, buttery, slightly crisp on the outside and soft inside! I just can't stop eating them * Hush Puppies: Served hot and crunchy with Louisiana Come Back sauce. Simple but really well done, especially with this dipping sauce. * Poached Pear Salad: Sweet poached pears, with a nutty flavor from candied pecans and dried cherries. I don't like goat cheese so I just pretend it didn't exist Light but flavorful, with a nice balance of sweet and tangy to pair with 2 heavy dishes above. * Voodoo Pork Chop: My main dish, I was surprised with the huge portion (10oz chop), served with collard greens, creole sauce, and sweet potatoes. Pork was incredibly tender and juicy, a bit salty but this is one of the best ones I've had in a while. It honestly felt like two servings and is definitely shareable. I want to love this place; beautiful restaurant, friendly, attentive staff. However, so many of the dishes were overcooked. Both the bbq shrimp and frog leg appetizers were so dry and overcooked. The clam gemelli pasta had clams that were dry and old tasting, and the "broth" tasted like pasta water with lemon juice with bits of raw garlic floating about. Came with a group of 4 on a Monday night. The interior is gorgeous and will transport you straight to the finest restaraunt in the French Quarter. The food is delicious and flavorful for sure but some of it was so salty it took away from the overall wonderful flavor. Everything is buttery / creamy / heavy in true Southern fashion. Drinks - The Southern Cobbler ($14) Drink is amazing. Apps- Whipped Honey Cornbread ($11) - Such pretty presentation, and yummy too. This was like a dessert almost. Steamed Mussels ($19) - Lovely and great flavor (love the addition of capers) but too salty. We stopped by here on our way to CDA. This place has a beautiful ambiance; I loved the table decor, the plants, and the piano. We started with some drinks - a daiquiri and a vieux carre of course, along with red crab beignets. The drinks were great and so were the beignets. For mains, we got the shrimp and grits and jambalaya. The shrimp and grits were fantastic, the jambalaya was ok too, although the portion was slightly smaller. We made reservations for 4:30pm on a Friday and were glad we did. The folks who arrived right after us had to sit at the bar. As far as food, the winners were my sweetheart's selections--the pork grillades and grits, and the bananas Foster. I would fight someone for either of them. We shared the Cajun fried shrimp to start. It was pretty good, and overpriced. I ordered the jambalaya and the bread pudding. The jambalaya was mediocre, and the bread pudding was good, but not great. Do not waste your hard earned money on this disgusting food. We are from the south and frequent NOLA. I ordered Cajun shrimp appetizer and it was very overcooked and fried in old oil. The Cajun pasta was dry and cold. The red beans and rice definitely came from a box possibly Zatarains we sent it back. The fried green tomatoes were tasteless and soggy and definitely fried in the same grease as everything else. My sister sent the jambalaya back because we don't know what that was but it wasn't jambalaya and you could taste the "refrigerator" odor. Excellent food and service as we were visiting Spokane for the NCAA women's basketball tourney. We tried a bunch of items...Z'Herbes, Cornbread, BBQ Shrimp, Red Beans and Rice, Shrimp and Grits, and a Shrimp Crab Cake. A couple of items such as the Red Beans and Rice was too spicy hot for our daughter and I, but my wife loved them. A close by guest at a table near us highly recommended the Grits. He was right on Wow. Cheesy and so flavorful. The glasses of Rose beforehand were also perfect. The only bummer was that we were too full to try the highly acclaimed Bread Pudding. Next time. This is the best New Orleans Cajun restaurant not in New Orleans that I have ever visited. 5 stars all the way, service, ambience, apps, main entrees all perfect scores. The ambience is straight out of a William Faulkner novel. BBQ Shrimp and the sauce in which it's served is fantastic. Shrimp. & grits were wrapped in bacon, creamy, smoky and delicious. This time my server mentioned he personally liked the grilled oysters so I said why don't I do half and half. The grilled oysters were perfectly cooked! They were like "medium rare". The inside tasted still very soft and tender while the outside you can taste was lightly grilled. The sauce on top was chefs kiss! Then it followed up with everything else. All delicious. A little late on this review. I was able to have a date night with my wife at this nice spot during a business trip. This place was recommended by a friend. The menu option was packed with what you'd expect from New Orleans. I'll admit I stuck with what I know when it comes to the food. For the appetizers, my wife and I tried the Hush Puppies, and Whipped Honey Cornbread. The hush puppies were very good but the star was the cornbread. Probably the best corn bread we've ever had! For the entree, I had the Cajun burger and my wife had the Jerk Spice Sticky Ribs. The burger was great, but had a little too much slaw on in for my liking. The ribs were so good. Sticky indeed and falling off the bone. Kudos to the chef! The next time I'm in Spokane will probably be non work related and the Nola Kitchen will be a place we return to. read more

We attempted to eat here for my son's birthday. It's a Thursday night just a tad after 7 pm. The host walked up and said "Reservation?" I said "no". He said "well you're not getting in - you have to have a reservation." And then he walked away. There's only 4 of us. No one else waiting for a table. First off dude, I'm from Louisiana and we have strong southern friendly values. No need to be snippy. The tone was everything. He acted like he's a host of a Michelin restaurant in NYC and I'm trying to get in with the hopes of seeing Taylor Swift dining or something. On the website halfway down the page it says, "Reservations are not required, but available if desired by calling 509-495-1400." So I guess he didn't like the way we looked? Cajuns can't eat Cajun in Spokane? It's ok, I can and do make it at home and have my necessities shipped up from my Cajun grocer when I need to. Don't know if I'll attempt again. Amazing food, great flavors. The ambiance was so cool and the service was good. My husband ordered the blackberry smash and loved it, he's a bourbon drinker, a little too much fire for me. We also had the hush puppies which were tasty. For entree I had the bacon wrapped shrimp and cheesy grits, so good. Grits are a go to for me if they are on the menu and these did not disappoint. My husband ordered the pork with grits that dish was also yum! Our son dug into the sweet ribs, delicious. We topped off the dinner with some beignets they were good but I think next time I might order the cheesecake and strawberry stuffed ones... something was missing in the regular ones.
