I wish we could give half stars cause I would give this place 3.5 stars. Let's start with the good things: 1. The service was great. Very friendly and nice. 2. They have a bar and lots of tables. 3. The burger was one of the better burgers I have had, it has its own sauce and spices. The things that could use improvement: 1. It was a little bit pricey for what you got. 2. We got mussels and seafood chowder and it was just mediocre. For being so close to the ocean you would think the seafood would be the best. Officially Closed! We enjoyed MacLeod's like many for years. It was consistent and exceptional most of the time. We will miss you.

This is on the main drag in Bucksport, ME. It looks like every sleepy little town mainstay restaurant I have ever been in, and with that comes a comfort level. Although it is not a sleek and shiny place, the dining area is nicely lit and very clean. It smells like good food that you are accustomed to eating, and that is not a bad thing. Our server was attentive and apparently is a whiz at memorization-it was her third day and she could answer any question we threw her way. The brats were flavorful and smothered in caraway kraut. The kale and orange garnish was nostalgic. My companion enjoyed her house made ravioli, wishing there was a bit more filling in them. The star of the show was the French Onion soup. It was delicious with tons of flavor, superbly melted cheese and a perfect ratio of crouton to soup. Needless to say, that is my new comfort food, within walking distance of my workplace. Kimberly was a gracious, kind and personable waitress. We enjoyed our interaction with her as much as from our delicious and fresh entrees. Baked breaded haddock and Cajun halibut were the choices for our dinner. Both were excellent. Fresh green beans, as vegetable of the day, was the best serving of green beans I've ever had. Macleod's is a gem in Maine. After a few days of seafood we were looking for something different.... A quick peak at the menu online and made a beeline. They offer a great variety of food options. I chose the Raspberry glazed duck paired with fresh green beans and roasted little potatoes. Skin was crispy and duck was juicy and delicious! Others in my party had the Shrimp linguini and the chicken and cheese burrito. Both disappeared quickly! It is a little place - only seats 85ish - but they do accept reservations. It was a little busy as a wedding party was in town, so it was a little noisy. But not enough to spoil our meal. read more

I would not have gotten them for that price and there were only 6. A hidden gem here in Bucksport along the Penobscot River. Great food and service for a reasonable price. Haddock chowder and main dishes have yet to disappoint. Homemade salad dressings are a must have, especially, the Blue Cheese. And there's a quaint little bar for spirits too. read more

I really liked this place. The service and people were great and it has such a great ambiance. The French onion soup as you've probably read is great. The scallops were buttery and yummy. I grew up with brown sugar on my meatloaf so this meatloaf tasted a lot like just meat. The raviolis were al dente and the almonds were a nice crunch. The inside filling was amazing and even though I'm not much of an Al dente fan, I still liked them with their orangey, butternut squash taste. Definitely not worth the exorbitant amount of money for the amount of food you actually get. Salmon was okay but such a small amount for the $30 they charged. The French onion soup bowl was literally stuffed with bread. Very little broth or onions. The margarita glass was literally filled with ice. Four sips and it was empty of the drink, ice still up to the rim. Service was good, and we were seated at a window with a view of the water which was nice. But won't be returning again. read more

While on vacation in Stockton Springs we stopped in here for dinner. We arrived just after 7, and they were closing at 8. I think they were a little surprised by the crowd on a Tuesday evening, and I think they were light on staff, but they sat us in about 15 minutes. All of our food was great! I am not a seafood person, and they had a ton of variety on their menu other than just seafood. I had chicken picatta with Parmesan green beans and mashed potatoes. My mom had a special which was salmon with vodka blueberry sauce and said it was so good, and she had never had anything like it before. My husband had the lobster and really enjoyed it. Service was great. Even though they seemed a bit overwhelmed with the later crowd that came in before closing they were very friendly and attentive. I also liked how they asked my husband if he needed a lobster tutorial. He didn't, but in my opinion that's a bonus at a restaurant if you are not a regular lobster eater. No other restaurants in Maine had asked him that! If you are in this area, definitely make this a stop for dinner! read more

If you are looking for a great dinning experience then you need to stop at MacLeod's Restaurant in Bucksport, Maine. Bucksport is across the Penobscot River estuary from Fort Knox and the Penobscot Narrows Bridge. We were so fortunate to have lunch here after a morning at Fort Knox. My husband had the haddock, parsley potatoes and coleslaw and he really enjoyed it. I had the baked scallops and I can say with all my heart that they were the best scallops I have ever eaten! We shared the coconut cream pie and I was so glad that we didn't pass up dessert today - it was absolutely wonderful! The entire meal was so delicious and perfect. read more

This was a wonderful experience from the greeting at the front door. We arrived early on a Friday night. We had no wait and we're immediately seated at a nice booth near the bar. My hubs and I both ordered drinks and they were very accommodating to our requests. The drinks were yummy! After placing our order with the very attentive and friendly waitress, we were then offered bread. Our entrees were fab. I got the NY Steak and it was cooked and seasoned to perfection. It came with a baked potato and fresh steamed green beans. Both were great! My hubs got the pasta special with eggplant, and sausage and he said it was fantastic! Our server checked on us often and I couldn't ask for a more friendly, attentive experience than we had tonight. I highly recommend this little gem for a great meal! read more

Great place, great owner I came in to town late got to the restaurant right before closing. They had no problem with me ordering food 20 minutes before closing then ended up staying almost an hour after closing just talking. Food was great music was great. MacLeod's is a great local family restaurant. Every time we visit our friends who live in the area we dine there. The staff is awesome. Connor makes sure we have a nice table. Macleod's is a staple eatery in Bucksport. It's a little higher end than most other area restaurants but the prices are reasonable and the food is excellent. I've been eating there for decades, even worked there when I was in high school, and I've never once had a bad meal. Waitstaff is always good and George, the owner, is often there helping as well. If you don't try either the houses own Chocolate Silk pie or their Tollhouse pie, make sure to get it heated with ice cream, then you're most certainly missing out. read more

Don't go for the $10 lunch special in summer! We and other party stood at hostess desk for more than 5 minutes and the waitress didn't even acknowledge us as human beings!!! We finally talked to the bar tender who said he was the owner and when we asked what's going on he just shrugged his shoulders ‍ and said I only have 1 waitress. I then told him not to even open for lunch if you don't have service. I told the owner you better get the lady at Fort Knox gift shop to stop recommending your place for $10 lunch special. Other guy told us that this town of Bucksport is good for nothing since the paper mill closed down in 2012..... in other words just keep driving through. read more

My family's been going to this place for years. My parents had their first date there in the 80's, so it has a close place in our hearts. Their food is consistently delicious. We've especially always loved their tomato bisque and chocolate silk pie. Their seafood is decent, but they have a lot more to offer on their menu if you don't like that kind of thing. I recommend the duck and the butternut squash ravioli. Their Mac and cheese (with or without lobster) is nothing to complain about either. Yum.. The reason I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is because the atmosphere has gone down hill over the years. They changed the lights at some point, and now it's so bright in there it feels a lot less intimate and a lot more like you're at a casual diner-type place. This is very weird, given the level of food they're serving. Their restaurant definitely needs a face lift. Something as simple as changing the lighting would really help. read more

We have been coming here for almost 20 years. We live in MA but have a place on Toddy Pond. Pleasant atmosphere, always pleasant staff and always an enjoyable meal. Is gluten friendly. The deserts are incredible. Much better than almost any other restaurant. They are truly homemade. Looking forward to many more meals there. read more

I wanted to take my visiting family members out somewhere close-ish to Bar Harbor. I found MacLeod's through a Google search and asked a few friends if they had been and they recommended it. Nice quiet atmosphere and plenty of room between tables. One thing I noted with a bit of surprise was the lack of privacy in the restroom (not to mention the "men's" and "women's" signs that may make more squeamish people uncomfortable) - the saloon-style wide-slatted doors made me glad no one else was in the restroom with me. More suited to the bar than a restaurant, perhaps. No wait to be seated (we did call ahead for reservations, but there was plenty of seating - on a Thursday night in the fall), but it did take a while for the server to come around to take our order (there were two other tables with diners - one in the middle of their meal, one just leaving). I ordered the cilantro lime chicken breast and my family members each had haddock. I was underwhelmed with the presentation - the plates were large, which underscored the modest portions. I had plenty of mashed sweet potatoes, and a single pounded boneless chicken breast (small but adequate), but just a few carrot rounds and a bit of broccoli. Smaller plates would likely have made the portion size unobtrusive, but the smallness stood out on large white oblong plates. Making up for the portion size was the taste - the flavors were really delicious. The chicken was grilled really nicely and was moist and gristle-free. The vegetables weren't overcooked, though I would have seasoned the sweet potatoes a bit more. Not the most beautiful meal I've ever had, but among the most flavorful. My family members enjoyed their haddock, and I sneaked a 'chip' from the fish and chips (noting also that the haddock was not dripping in batter and oil - a bonus) and it was crisp and nicely cooked.
