Let me say upfront--reserve your prime rib ahead of time. That being said, it's worth the phone call. If you are expecting fine dining, temper your expectations. The indoor dining area is not fancy and offers a great view of the service area and restroom, and features nothing but a life sized pirate statue in the way of ambiance, but no one is going there for ambiance or the service. We're all there for the food. The two of us had prime rib which was indeed delicious and a huge pirtion. The salads were beautifully put together on chilled plates and not just a random handful of bagged spring mix. What a nice surprise. Our waitress was boisterous with other tables and ignored our order, bringing water instead of the soft drinks, and neglecting to bring our vegetable until we questioned her about it. The meal was well cooked and beyond fantastic. It offset the lackluster service. We didn't order dessert, but looking around at other dessert orders, we made a mental note to get the strawberry shortcake next time. First off the food was excellent; we expected prime rib but by the time we got seated and waited on, it was no longer available. Prime rib starts at 5 we arrived at 5:45. So we opted for scallop plates. The wait staff was completely stressed out, and overall it was chaotic inside as they had two big parties at tables outside too and people waiting for both take out and seats in a tiny space. I found out if you knew to call for the prime rib they'd save it for you when you arrived at a table, or you could pick it up for take out. Those who got prime rib said it was excellent. Three of our party ordered clam baskets and compared to the usual the food was quite disappointing. I am not sure if it is because someone in the party asked for extra crispy fries and someone took offense, I m not sure. The plates arrived with what I feel were reduced proportions, (both clams and fries) over cooked tasteless fries and the clams as well were overdone. Definitely not even close to the clams and fries we have had in the past. The service was good as it usually is there although it could not make up for the disappointment in the food. My husband and I are visiting Maine to spend time with some friends. En route to their house, we stopped at Just Barb's for lunch. Our server highly recommended the fried clams. My husband took her advice and ordered them, and he was so glad he did! He says they were the best fried clams he's ever eaten in his life! I had the seafood chowder, and it was absolutely delicious. So a neighbor kept telling us the clams were the best. The menu claimed "best in New England". My companion had the fried clam appetizers and said they were good, but not as good as other places---too much dough he proferred. He did comment the cold beer in a frosted glass was the best he's had in a while. Oh yes, he also devoured the yeast bread delivered warm to the table. I chose the haddock sandwich and it was fabulous!! Flaky and warm inside a nice Hun with a touch of tartar sauce. The fountain soda was lacking (diet coke)~so I drank the other half of the beer above. We didn't have room for dessert. Place was busy on a Thursday at lunch. Visiting from California and stopped in for dinner on our way back to Stockton Springs after a 5 mile hike in Acadia! We were craving burgers but wanted to try their seafood too, so we had two burgers and the shrimp app, which is a plate of fried shrimp. Everything totally hit the spot! The shrimp was excellent and the burgers were nothing fancy but really good, as were the fries. The menu has a wide range of items from lots of seafood to pork chops, chicken fingers, Alfredo, and more. The inside has a casual diner feel and the service was incredible. Service was great but the food was very disappointing. We went especially for the prime rib; however, I did not see any mention that you have to 'reserve' your prime rib in advance. I did notice that there was a huge disparity in the size of portions for regular customers as opposed to others. The regular customers had portions of about two inches thick and the others were served portions closer to 1/2 inch. Since I was not 'allowed' to have prime rib I ordered the ribeye. It was only about 1/4 inch thick, extremely tough, no flavor, dry, and the most gristle I have probably ever had in a steak. For $33.00 it was definitely not worth it. Our waitress was the nicest person ever, but the older lady working was very rude to anyone that she did not take care of. Very disappointing for something we were really looking forward to having to be told no that all the prime rib was reserved. We also made sure we went there at about 5:00 PM as I know restaurants only cook so much prime rib but we've never experienced having to reserve our food a week in advance. They really need to treat all customers the same. The disparity in portions is a huge red flag. We will not be returning. read more
