I always find their food tasty and satisfying. They always have a huge crowd especially in the summer time so be sure to go early! The seafood tastes fresh and even as take out, which is what I usually do, it stays nice! The have ample parking and outdoor seating which is great because they are so close to the water. Sushi here (TUNA is like nothing else on the East Coast. Yumm! Get any sushi roll you want and it will be delicious. They really hit it out of the park with their fresh fish. Personally I would stick to broiled fish here because it's so good. Tried their fish tacos and think they're good but they're not going to woo you like their other entrees. When I first read the menu for this place I expected the food not to be that great since the menu is SO diverse. I was mistaken because Mac's exceeded my expectations. Decent amount of parking, but kind of tight if you don't have a compact car. The place itself is very cape cod - with outdoor and indoor seating, outdoor raw bar, and outdoor bar. Service was okay, our waitress took a while to take our order but the food all came out very quickly. The food overall was some of the freshest seafood I've had while visiting the cape. We were a group of four and started with the oysters on the half shell which were excellent quality fresh Wellfleet oysters. We also all split a crabby crunch sushi roll just to try some of the sushi and it was SO good! Made with real crab and again very fresh. We all had a cup of the clam chowder which was good but not great - too thin for my liking. For entrees two of us both got the fish tacos and they were amazing!!! HUGE portion and served deconstructed so you can put whatever toppings you'd like. The fish was so fresh and had a great coating. The other two in our party got the lobster roll and the fish sandwich. They both said the quality of the meals were there but felt the portions were too small. Absolutely incredible! The staff is so friendly and attentive and the food is worthy of a final meal, a great way to go abundantly with a smile. The flavors are savory, from the chowder to the sushi rice. The Toro poke bowl melted in my mouth and the Halibut was the best I have ever had, served over Lobster Mash Potatoes! Oh my goodness! Even my 4 year old mowed down the gluten free chicken strips and fries. I'm not one to photograph food, but after a few bites it was clear that the moment was special and needed to be captured both in core memory and film. I would've given this restaurant a higher rating if it was based on my first experience, but sadly tonight's visit was quite a disappointment. The sushi was a bit expensive for what we got. Didn't taste that great. And my swordfish curry was just ok. It was supposed to have sweet potato in the dish but didn't. We planned on dining outside but decided against this because the place was packed. I get it that it's a holiday weekend but the bar area you couldn't move and the outdoor tables were on top of each other. If you care at all about social distancing definitely choose the takeout option. They wouldn't even give us water to go. Said they didn't have take out cups when we saw at the bar there was indeed plastic cups. The food and drinks were absolutely delicious. We tried the halibut, bluefish, and tuna hawaiian poke bowl, and everything was phenomenal. We are huge fans of seafood and everything tasted extremely fresh and looked presentable. Drink wise we chose the Da Nang, Mac's Manhattan, and the Orange Blossom, and were impressed with the drinks, and thought the pricing was fair. What an interesting place. The quintessential New England summertime spot. The place gets busy, there is a hectic parking lot with an attendant, there is a bar area where you can wait for your table and get oysters and drinks. (You will wait for your table at this no reservation spot) The menu has all of the expected items. Lobsters, local wellfleet oysters, shrimp cocktails, chowders and steamers. But they also tackle things like sushi and Harrissa and curried swordfish. In most cases this leads to catastrophic results, where the restaurant offends multiple cuisines and cultures. But this was not the case, the food was 5 times better than what I was expecting. As a family of four we were able to try all sorts of things. Well we waited the hour for our table, we had the super fresh wellfleet oyster platter, their well cooked and chilled large shrimp cocktail. We then moved on to a two lb lobster for my daughter, some sort of handgrenade sushi thing, their Caesar salad and curry swordfish. The lobster was perfectly cooked, drawn butter, with a side of corn. This was perfect and exceeded expectations in a place of this size. The Caesar salad was well dressed. An addition of a commercial brand bagel chip was genius on a couple of levels. Firstly, it's hard to keep bread at the Beach, so a crisp chip was nice. Second, it introduced the umami bomb of msg. I have a strong opinion about Caesar salad and places that serve boquerones or white anchovy in acid are wrong. I mean maybe you can do a combo of salted and marinated anchovies but, no it's not inventive and you aren't being cutting edge by just using vinegar anchovies. You are removing the very soul of the dish. But, the addition of msg, may have slightly changed my opinion. You still are wrong but, at least you saved some of the umami. But I digress, bagel chips sent me down a rabbit hole whether they meant it or not. We then tried the hand Grenade sushi or whatever it was called. It was some fraken-creation that was probably made with a little TLC and a little bit more THC. It was like a shrimp tempura roll that was topped with spicy scallop salad mixed with fish eggs and eel sauce maybe. Whatever it was, it was over the top and delicious. Deep fried crunchy things with Mayo, fish eggs and a sugar sauce. Capturing the mindful simplicity of zen culture. The swordfish curry was embarrassingly uninspired but this place may have been the whitest place I've been in many years so maybe that tsp of commercial curry Paste in a vat of coconut milk is all they are ready for. It needed lime juice, chile, fish sauce, fresh herb like cilantro or mint, or kaffir. My son's chicken fingers and fries were also maybe the worst version we have ever been served which was strange as it's a family restaurant with many multigenerational tables. A simple fix on the dried out measly offering of chicken fingers seems simple enough. A huge basket of fries with three dried out shriveled things, resting atop. My daughter wanted dessert without even looking I just assumed this would be the type of place that has a chocolate lava cake. Shockingly they did not. Servers were super nice/game face summer mode. Everyone was hustling and I hope clocking loot. I was impressed with how this place ran. It's an impressive operation. I would go back for sure. read more

We were so excited about going here, because the food looked pretty good, BUT we were forced to leave because they didn't let us take a car seat frame inside the restaurant. They have weird "policy" against strollers and ours was not even a stroller, but a frame for a car seat, super compact one (and btw there's pleeeenty of room between tables there for any size stroller - we got a table outside under the tent). So they gave us a "choice" - put baby on the ground (not acceptable, it was cold and dirty and not safe) or they give you a chair where your car seat wont even fit. Just very very unpleasant experience with this place...and honestly I've never seen anything like that, and never been treated like that, they are not customer oriented at all. Such a shame! Really underwhelming experience. I would describe the charred octopus flavor as burnt. The plating showed no effort. The fish tacos were not very good, and it came unassembled with the tortillas sticking together. If I wanted to put tacos together I would make them at home. Also, the rice in a scallop dish was hard, undercooked. Other reviews say the raw seafood is good, I definitely would not recommend the meals prepared by the kitchen. Service was okay at best. We were able to get immediate seating at around 1:30 pm after completing a hike in nearby Cannon Hill, and it was a welcoming oasis where we quenched our thirst and enjoyed a dozen of their famous Wellfleet oysters! The oysters are served with a horseradish cocktail sauce, and a clear spicy broth, and these were so fresh and superbly delicious! I washed mine down with a superlative dry hard cider from the Stormalong Cider Brewery from Sherborn and Leominster, MA. It was strong in ABV and with a dry, almost Champagne-like finish, and the perfect beverage to enjoy with the seafood. I also had their flounder BLT sandwich which included the best and crispiest fries I've had during this pandemic! Great experience overall! We were walking around the area and asked some other walkers for recommendations for a lunch stop. They enthusiastically recommended Mac's Shack as a local favorite. We were pleased to discover the restaurant had converted much of its parking lot into outdoor dining under a beautiful, huge white tent. They even had decorative tables, candles and plants set up inside the tent- very classy vibes. We were seated at a table in the middle of the tent at ample distance from other diners. Very good social distancing here! We're ordered a dozen oysters to begin our lunch and they were excellent: served with a spicy horseradish accompaniment and a sweeter, clearer sauce. Quite tasty. For our entrees my bf ordered a fish sandwich and I ordered a sushi roll. Both of these were good, although our waitress forgot to bring soy sauce with the sushi which was kind of odd and we had some difficulty getting her attention to request some. Food and great atmosphere are the standouts here. Decent selection of beers and some cocktails. The main elements detracting from a full out five star rating are the service and the unfortunate bathrooms which were quite cramped and not very clean. Otherwise, this place was great and we'll definitely be back here on future trips to Wellfleet. read more

I don't usually do that thing of checking Yelp to see what's around, but we were coming through Wellfleet back to Ptown on our way from a hike in Great Island and I did it, came up with Mac's, texted some local friends, who gave it the thumbs up. Although the menu said there were vegan items, usually vegan food from a fish restaurant are just poor consolation prizes for vegans/vegetarians unlucky enough to end up at a fish spot. Not so, Mac's Shack. We had veggie sushi that was lovely, some sides (miso soup, edamame, seaweed salad) that was also quite good, and a chickpea burger with a gluten free bun that was delicious. We took out and they were a little slow, but it was a holiday weekend, and we were just so pleased that this fish place had clearly really thought through pleasing people with plant-based diets. I've been to Mac's Shack ever year since it opened, for indoor dining initially and for takeout since 2020. Tonight's takeout was notably worse than the last two summers'. They forgot one item from my order. When I called they quickly issued a refund but didn't apologize. The sushi was tolerable. The fish could have been fresher but was certainly not spoiled. The rice was lousy: flavorless and completely lacking in vinegar. This was the first time I've thrown out the rice portion of chirashi. The sautéed littlenecks were very good but not as good as last summer since they changed the recipe. No sign of any covid precautions when I picked up the food. Because Mac's has such a good track record I'll be back but I'm pretty disappointed. read more

I've been bringing my family here for years and for the most part everything has been positive. Yesterday we went to dinner. We ordered oysters, little necks, spice scallops rolls and the Bermuda fish chowder. My spice scallop roll was missing sesame seeds my wife said I should say something but I thought no big deal it's a busy place mistakes happen and ate it the way it was my drinks were spot on and the fish chowder was spectacular as always. I usually do the halibut and my wife usually sticks with sushi but we thought we should try something else. We both ordered the "vegan" fried rice adding an egg and lobster. Both our plates came to the table missing lobster. We said something this time and they took our plates away to sort it out. The same plates came back with with lobster mixed in. It was good but that's not the point. They made a mistake and when it was pointed out the correct thing to do would have been to make it correctly fresh. I'm sure it would have been better had they done so. This is such a cute little spot. It's definitely bigger than a shack. There's a really big parking lot and it's right on a lake. The patio is so nice. I didn't go inside so I'm not sure if there even is an inside, but if there is I'd definitely suggest eating on the patio. There's a bar and regular tables you can sit at. We got the spicy margarita which was okay. I thought it would maybe be a bit better. We also got the Russian oysters, some sushi and the buffalo cauliflower. They were all really good. I was skeptical about the Russian oysters since I'd never had them before and they have vodka and sour cream in them. I thought it was a strange combo, but it actually tasted good-Although I do prefer regular oysters with horseradish and cocktail sauce. All in all, this is a great place to grab some appetizers and drinks. All the appetizers we got tasted really good so I'm sure that the actual meals are good as well. read more

We are visiting from Portland, Oregon, and we were looking for a place to get excellent seafood. A friend who lives in East Falmouth and is a foodie suggested Mac's Shack. I got the clambake and my husband got the cold lobster roll. The lobster in my clambake was just mush--the consistency of baby food, and waterlogged. The potatoes were hard and undercooked. The clams were were mucus-y and slimy, like they disintegrated, except the rubberband part was intact. The sausage was dry and overcooked. The corn was good, and was the only edible part of the meal. We were with friends we haven't seen in decades, so I didn't want to send it back. My husband's lobster roll was not good either. He said the whole sandwich was just chewy and the bun was bad. I ordered another margarita and ate a bowl of ice cream when I got home. Overrated and careless cooking. Avoid. read more

The best oysters EVER! We went on a rainy day and had steamers, mussels and oysters. Everything was delicious and it was an awesome little place in the middle of Wellfleet. The ouster flute was tough to get down bc it was pure vodka, a bit of real orange and the oyster. I would throw in some seltzer or something to make it a bit easier but I still love the idea. I can't wait to come back to this place. The people next to us had some of the amazing Asian food and it looked fabulous. They also had a Latin sous chef who makes amazing Latin food on the menu as well. It was very unique to get such good seafood, Mexican and Asian all in one place but it was awesome too. Every restaurant has some "off" days and I happened to pay my first visit to Mac's Shack on one of those days. I ordered the flounder sandwich with truffle fries for takeout, and upon leaving the restaurant and opening my box, I was rather bummed to find that the truffle fries for which I paid a significant amount of extra cash (which was not mentioned by the server when they recommended the upgrade) were in fact, regular french fries. It was disappointing but hey, stuff happens. So I emailed the restaurant to see if we could reach some kind of a deal to make up for not getting what I paid for. I never heard back from anyone, and that's why this review is a one star review. Mistakes happen, but when a restaurant evades inquiry about those mistakes and refuses to acknowledge them, that's not cool. You can do better for Cape Cod dining. read more
