Local Break is an American restaurant and bar that opened in Eastham, Massachusetts in May 2012. It was founded by Mackenzie Gallant. After graduating from high school, he realized the difficulties of finding success on the Cape so he decided to enroll at Hartwick College in upstate New York. Gallant soon became homesick and decided to move right back to the Cape after graduating. He had worked in the restaurant business since he was 14: starting out as a dishwater and eventually moving into management positions. He soon realized that the only way that he would be successful in this industry was if he was his own boss. He found a restaurant space in North Eastham that was previously home to Rick's Outer Bar and completely remodeled it. All of the dishes on Local Break's menu are crafted with fresh, local ingredients. The bar also has an impressive list of local craft beers on tap. Unlike many Cape Cod restaurants that close down during the colder months, Local Break is open year-round. My extended family and I visited Local Break this past August during our week-long trip to the Cape. The restaurant was right down the street from our Airbnb and we had heard good things. We enjoyed the nautical decor and the staff were friendly and helpful. For cocktails, my wife had the "Strawberry Peach Lemonade" (Deep Eddy peach vodka, strawberry purée, lemonade, fresh lemon) and I had the "Woodford Reserve Maple Old Fashion" (muddled cherry, orange, maple simple syrup, Angostura bitters, Woodford Reserve Bourbon, splash of water, ice). Both were very flavorful! Among our whole party, the entrees we ordered were the "Pulled BBQ Chicken Sandwich" (pulled baked BBQ chicken served on a Kaiser roll, topped with fried onion rings and coleslaw), the "Romesco Fish Sandwich" (fried cod with house made Romesco sauce, lettuce, pickles), the "Hot Chicken Sandwich" (crispy fried chicken thigh, sweet pickles, house made coleslaw, brown sugar-hot sauce, Kaiser bun), the "Po' Boy" (beer battered fried shrimp, baby greens, tomato, chili garlic mayo, baguettini) and the "Kid's Tenders". Everyone really liked their food! I really liked my Po' Boy which went great with some sweet potato fries and Cajun maple dipping sauce! We would definitely stop at Local Break again on a future trip to the Cape!

The steak and cheese sandwich brings you here in and of itself! It's one of the best I have ever had. Everything you can get here is incredible, and tasty and fresh.

We went to the ocean to watch the sunset and because of that it was after 8 and practically all the restaurants on route six were closed or closing. We elected to come back to the local break since we were here two nights ago and had such a great experience. Tonight we ordered the clam appetizer which was absolutely amazing. It was made with olives, grape tomatoes, capers, white wine and obviously the clams. It was to die for. Served with two pieces of Crostini it was the perfect appetizer to share. For the entrée we got the house cheeseburger which was also amazing. We elected to upgrade to the sweet potato fries with the most amazing Cajun maple dipping sauce. The waitress, Erin, was nice enough to even split the burger for us on two separate plates. For dessert we got the Keylime tart and a s of carrot cake, both of which were divine. The kitchen staff is to be commended, along with the service staff and the entire establishment. It's is such a great place.

From the outside gravel lot and simple string white lights, honestly, even from outside, you'd swear this was just another casual flip-flop Cape spot. The energy is pumping, the crowd is spilling onto the patio and the bar area might seem as it could double as a summer beach club. Inside, though, the navy and white style keeps things crisp, nautical and just slightly elevated enough without trying too hard. It's relaxed, but you can feel there's something more beneath the surface. Even with our res, we waited a bit- which wasn't a problem. Once we were seated, the service snaps into a bit casual/a bit fine-dining gear- it's attentive but not stuffy. Caroline's menu is where the "casual" mask fully drops. It's Cape Cod, so of course oysters are a must- cold, briny and perfect. Then the main plates push things a little higher: my halibut was cooked to perfection, was meaty and silky. My husband's linguine+clams was another hit- garlicky and decadent without being heavy. And the grand finale of them all was our dessert. I initially opted out of their chocolate pot de crème- but I gave in as their only chocolate item. I'm so happy we ordered it. Except, I misread the toasted marshmallow part in our dessert. I removed it and placed it on another plate. This so-called pots de crème had nothing custardy about it. It had the shape alright- but this was so freaking moussey- it was ultra heavenly. Our server Megan was a sweetheart from beginning to end. Caroline's is the kind of place that kind of says 'laid-back'- but the presentation, meal and pricing, all scream as your go-to destination that's a step-up from the ordinary. Obviously you aren't wearing your sequins dress here- but if Caroline's gave you a wink, it would say: you thought this was just a casual night out? Think again.

We chose clam and corn fritters, halibut tacos and fish and chips. The fritters were so crunchy and flavorful. They came with two dipping sauces. My husband really enjoyed the beer battered fish. Fried well and golden brown. My tacos were with pan seared halibut. They had two sauces on them which was the only part of the food I did not enjoy. But they were well prepared and I'm sure others would like the sauces. My only complaint of the night was that our waitress wasn't friendly or attentive. She looked really put out by any changes we wanted to make. But we will definitely go again and try more things and enjoy the upbeat atmosphere!

There were a few other tables and by the time we left it was picking up with an early dinner crowd. We had a lovely server named Jodi who was attentive & helpful. The windows were open so I am not sure if they have air conditioning but we were not too warm. The food was delicious! We got the Jerk burger, cooked perfectly, large portion! I might get the aoli on the side in the future it was just a tiny bit too much for me but really good! We had a side of plantains which were perfect & made the mistake of upgrading to salads on both. We should have done one with fries & one with side salad. Definitely worth checking out!

There's plenty of bike parking by the beer yard. It was a nice day so we wanted to sit outside and have a few beers in the Hog Island beer garden. Service was great. They were getting prepared for the busy season training some folks, and everyone was very friendly and hospitable. The beer garden itself was a huge grassy area with plenty of seating, a mix of picnic tables and regular tables with chairs. Despite it being right by the woods it didn't seem too buggy which was really nice. After hanging out a bit we decided to get dinner there. We were able to order food right at the beer garden and pick it up at the take out window. The food was awesome! We got a bowl of clam chowder, loaded tater tots, and the Rt 6 bacon cheeseburger with a side of greens. First, they're not messing around when they say 'loaded' tots! Some places put a sad little drizzle of cheese sauce on top, but theirs were thoroughly covered with a delicious beer cheese sauce, fresh bacon, and scallions. The clam chowder was great! Not too thick, lots of clams and clam flavor. And the burger was amazing! A nice, thick, juicy patty that was perfectly cooked, a really fresh brioche style bun with lots of flavorful toppings. We walked through the restaurant itself to use the bathroom and it seemed like they had a lot of seating, a nice bar, and a patio area. The only bathrooms being inside the restaurant was a little annoying, but I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt that they'll have some port-o-potties by the beer yard come the full fledged busy season. Overall a really nice time and we look forward to returning!
