I visited for brunch during my birthday trip to Cape May. The atmosphere is charming, and it's easy to see why it's popular. Unfortunately, the food didn't live up to the reputation for me. Nothing tasted bad, but nothing stood out either. The biggest surprise was the water, which had an unpleasant taste. The biggest disappointment was with a reservation issue. After my brunch, my reservation wasn't marked as attended or released in the system, which prevented me from making another reservation elsewhere for dinner. When I asked for help, Alfonso was dismissive and came across as unnecessarily rude instead of helping resolve what should have been a simple issue. It ended up affecting the rest of my evening. Service was friendly, and the restaurant itself has a great vibe, but overall I expected more based on the reviews. I personally would try somewhere else for breakfast next time. read more

The Chesapeake Bay Benedict was not good. The crab meat is not seasoned at all, so it gives it a kind of fishy taste and in my opinion does not pair well with the hollandaise sauce and egg. I have been to the Mad Batter several times and I am always impressed with the service and the quality of the food. People think of the Mad Batter as a breakfast spot but I feel that their dinner is underrated. We recently dined there with friends and had one of the best crab cakes that I have ever had. I wanted to like Mad Batter because I heard some good things about it. It's a cute house turned into an Alice in Wonderland themed restaurant. The staff was excellent and we ordered mimosas to drink. I was excited to try the clam chowder since it was free of all of my allergies. I then ordered the arugula and mozzarella salad with an addition of their lobster. The mimosas were excellent! The clam chowder was very good. But the salad was awful and the lobster was rubbery and overcooked. I thought any and all restaurants in Cape May would be stellar ... not so ... I just wanted a casual meal, so we hit Mad Batter. I had a chicken Caesar salad; my Sir, a "double" pepperoni pizza. Both of our meals were only for sustenance, unfortunately. Probably my least favorite Caesar Ive had in years ... the pizza was just meh. Nothing special. Yelp Mad Batter really impressed me. There we were, in Cape May on Thanksgiving Saturday looking for parking nearby. After finally finding a space, we walked up to Mad Batter, where there were already a number of people standing outside. We were a party of seven, so this wasn't looking good for us. Well, we had a Thanksgiving miracle. They had a table ready for us in less that ten minutes! The food and service here were both very good. I had the crab cake sandwich. It was very mild in flavor but still good. I recommend it, but I'll try some of their other offerings before I get it again. My sister-in-law had one of the specials, the Fried Tomato & Cracked Black Pepper Bacon Sandwich. She and my brother agreed that it was messy but delicious. The lobster mayo set it off nicely. Our server was really friendly and accommodating. She made sure we were taken well care of. We pointed out an error in the check, and she was very kind in taking care of it, and gave no attitude. The worse possible service ever! TO THE OWNER: Please remind all waitstaff to ask customers about any allergies before serving food, to ensure their safety and prevent any potential harm. I ordered the harvest salad with candied walnuts. I have no idea what candied walnuts are, so I wish the waiter asked if I had any allergies because they can SOMETIMES contain cinnamon in it and I am allergic to cinnamon. When the salad came out I started to eat the salad and noticed my throat starting to feel funny. I didn't mix the salad well so I just ate the arugula with the sauce and the chicken. Half way through I noticed there were walnuts and I took a bite of it and my throat immediately started to swell and I can feel my face and tongue getting itchy. Thank god I have my allergy medications on me, but what if the next person this happens to doesn't... We immediately told the server about my cinnamon allergy and the waiter looked at me like I was joking because I ate half of it and then asked me "So you're done with that?" and I said, "Yes I can't eat it anymore, I'm allergic to it and it's contaminated with everything else. I felt my throat starting to close up, but I am okay because I have my allergy medicine. " He asked if I wanted anything else and I said no just a hot tea to help with inflammation. I appreciate that the server was trying to help us out, but he still came back with the bill and said the owner is still going to charge me because it says candied walnuts on the menu, implying that it's my fault...I really expected this place to have better service, but looking at past reviews I can see how this place has overpriced underrated food and terrible service. They don't care about their customers and certainly just focused on making money. Hopefully after today they include that their candied walnuts have cinnamon in it! Came here on Friday night made an online reservation and you must make a reservation to get seating difficult to do walk-ins on weekend. If you make your reservation, make sure you request seating inside the online really didn't give you options so we got stuck sitting outside. They have fans going, but the seating is extremely tight. The food is average and I think you're better to come here for maybe breakfast overall it's a good atmosphere and I'd give it a try. read more

I can't believe I haven't reviewed before! This is our fave place in Cape May! Why? The food, the portion sizes, the staff. It all comes together in this beyond charming building. Their gluten free options are VAST. It makes it difficult to eat anywhere else on the Cape because of the fact that they offer real food. Not just GF basics. My husband and I visited The Mad Batter in Cape May based on a recommendation from a colleague, but unfortunately, it didn't live up to the expectations. To the GM at Mad Batter: My wife, our 10-month-old daughter, and I were initially seated at a table. We asked the hostess if there was a better spot to accommodate our daughter's stroller, and she graciously moved us to a table in a mostly empty section of the restaurant, assuring us it was perfectly fine. A few minutes later, the GM marched over to our table, curtly informed us that strollers were not allowed, and effectively told us we had to leave. We were embarrassed in front of other guests because of a mistake made by your own staff. If your restaurant has a no-stroller policy, that's entirely your right. But the professional response would have been to acknowledge your staff's mistake, apologize for the confusion, and work with us to find a solution. Instead, you chose to handle it in the most confrontational and dismissive way possible. What made this experience so disappointing wasn't the policy--it was your complete lack of courtesy, empathy, and professionalism. As a manager, you represent the restaurant, and your conduct reflected poorly on it. Families deserve to know that they may be treated this way despite following the directions of the restaurant's own staff. We left feeling humiliated over something that was never our fault, and we will never return. read more

It was quiet which we were looking for. My wife started with the clam chowder. It was more a soup than a chowder, but it was chock full of clams and some bacon too, and very tasty. I had the the cheesesteak egg rolls, nice and crispy. I liked how the cheese was in a dipping sauce. Very well done. For our entrees, my wife had the soy Glazed salmon, on a bed of fried rice. Clean plate club says it all. I had the Half-rack honey glazed St Louis Ribs. They were sweet and perfectly cooked, not fall of the bone, but melting in your mouth. It was served with fresh Cole slaw and macaroni and cheese, the cheese sauce velvety and quite delicious. We ate here several years ago, hence the return on this getaway. We visited on a Sunday morning and it was busy but we were able to get a table with only a 5 minute wait. The restaurant is cute, it looks like an older house. Had about a forty minute wait when we got there at 10am, which was before the real line formed. I suggest trying to go there as early as possible. Once we were in we could see why it was worth the wait. I ordered the French toast and I can honestly say I've never had better French toast in my life. I didn't know how big the portion size would be so my fiancé and I each ordered entrees as well. It was a tad too much food, but I'm glad we did it that way. We have been going to the Mad Batter for awhile as we live here. Today was our last time. We both had the eggs Benedict and something was off about them. The coffee was weak. We have gone this summer multiple times with different guests visiting and they agree that something changed in the kitchen. It's too bad because at one time it was very good. This place is nestled between two famous inns in Cape May but was massive inside which I think gave it the charm you want in this town. The wait staff was super nice and attentive. The seating was a little odd in some spots but still comfortable. I got the oven roasted turkey sandwich which came on a croissant and it was pretty tasty. The croissant was what drew me in but it was a standard croissant. The sandwich itself was piled with turkey which was a win and there was Brie, tomato and cranberry cream cheese. Even with all of that though something felt missing from this sandwich. As I saw all the yummy breakfast foods coming out I realized maybe a sandwich was the wrong choice given the name of the restaurant.
