The worse possible service ever! TO THE OWNER: Please remind all waitstaff to ask customers about any allergies before serving food, to ensure their safety and prevent any potential harm. I ordered the harvest salad with candied walnuts. I have no idea what candied walnuts are, so I wish the waiter asked if I had any allergies because they can SOMETIMES contain cinnamon in it and I am allergic to cinnamon. When the salad came out I started to eat the salad and noticed my throat starting to feel funny. I didn't mix the salad well so I just ate the arugula with the sauce and the chicken. Half way through I noticed there were walnuts and I took a bite of it and my throat immediately started to swell and I can feel my face and tongue getting itchy. Thank god I have my allergy medications on me, but what if the next person this happens to doesn't... We immediately told the server about my cinnamon allergy and the waiter looked at me like I was joking because I ate half of it and then asked me "So you're done with that?" and I said, "Yes I can't eat it anymore, I'm allergic to it and it's contaminated with everything else. I felt my throat starting to close up, but I am okay because I have my allergy medicine. " He asked if I wanted anything else and I said no just a hot tea to help with inflammation. I appreciate that the server was trying to help us out, but he still came back with the bill and said the owner is still going to charge me because it says candied walnuts on the menu, implying that it's my fault...I really expected this place to have better service, but looking at past reviews I can see how this place has overpriced underrated food and terrible service. I thought any and all restaurants in Cape May would be stellar ... not so ... I just wanted a casual meal, so we hit Mad Batter. I had a chicken Caesar salad; my Sir, a "double" pepperoni pizza. I wanted to like Mad Batter because I heard some good things about it. It's a cute house turned into an Alice in Wonderland themed restaurant. The staff was excellent and we ordered mimosas to drink. I was excited to try the clam chowder since it was free of all of my allergies. I then ordered the arugula and mozzarella salad with an addition of their lobster. The mimosas were excellent! The clam chowder was very good. But the salad was awful and the lobster was rubbery and overcooked. After finally finding a space, we walked up to Mad Batter, where there were already a number of people standing outside. We were a party of seven, so this wasn't looking good for us. Well, we had a Thanksgiving miracle. They had a table ready for us in less that ten minutes! The food and service here were both very good. I had the crab cake sandwich. It was very mild in flavor but still good. I recommend it, but I'll try some of their other offerings before I get it again. My sister-in-law had one of the specials, the Fried Tomato & Cracked Black Pepper Bacon Sandwich. She and my brother agreed that it was messy but delicious. The lobster mayo set it off nicely. Our server was really friendly and accommodating. She made sure we were taken well care of. We pointed out an error in the check, and she was very kind in taking care of it, and gave no attitude. I can't believe I haven't reviewed before! This is our fave place in Cape May! Why? The food, the portion sizes, the staff. It all comes together in this beyond charming building. Their gluten free options are VAST. It makes it difficult to eat anywhere else on the Cape because of the fact that they offer real food. Not just GF basics. The seating was a little odd in some spots but still comfortable. I got the oven roasted turkey sandwich which came on a croissant and it was pretty tasty. The croissant was what drew me in but it was a standard croissant. The sandwich itself was piled with turkey which was a win and there was Brie, tomato and cranberry cream cheese. Even with all of that though something felt missing from this sandwich. As I saw all the yummy breakfast foods coming out I realized maybe a sandwich was the wrong choice given the name of the restaurant. June 3, a little after 3 pm. I am a 78 year old fulltime Cape May resident. I asked for a table for one and was told that they weren't serving until 3:30. I asked to be seated with the understanding that no one would wait on me until 3:30 pm. Instead, the hostess pointed to a bench and told me to wait there. She seemed like she didn't want to be asked for anything but we didn't need much. For breakfast my mom and I split the eggs Benedict with bacon instead of Canadian bacon and also oatmeal pancakes with blueberries and pure maple syrup. The Benedict didn't have enough hollandaise and the bacon was under done. The English muffin was barely toasted. The pancakes were dense and heavy. Not sure why this is a speciality of theirs. Glad they offer real syrup (for an upcharge). Coffee wasn't good. Had to go get another one elsewhere after. I feel like this place is just hyped up and doesn't live up to it. Here's a tip from a former server...considering it's a Monday in Winter and only 1/3 of your tables are filled, seat me-or how about this..."you're welcome to have a drink at the bar while you wait". NOPE. I didn't know there was a bar or I would have done that on my own. Instead, we waited in the only spot we could wait which was right next to the door-fridge! We were seated and our waiter came quickly, brought our drinks. Great. Our tiny water glasses were never refilled nor were we asked if we wanted our coffee or sodas refilled. Food was good. It was.
