Overpriced. Poor food and service. Been here 3 times and every time it's been awful. Crab cakes shouldn't be called crab cakes. Steak was more grissle and fat than meat. The waitress was more concerned about her section in the dining room than waiting on us. Fast food caliber wait staff. Kid spilled a whole tray of food and halfway cleaned it up. Place is a pit. I don't know how they figure this is an Irish pub. Their beer list doesn't have anything Irish on tap. The GM should be ashamed maybe get into a job field more in their lane. read more

This is my favorite restaurant in Wallace hands down. I love there food so much. Everything is perfect here. The waiters are very kind and sweet. My wife and I dined here on 12/16/22 in the evening. We had had the prime rib special a month or so ago, and so decided to have it again, as we remembered it being very good. We shared the prime rib (cooked medium) and potato, and each got a side salad. The salads, dressings, horseradish cream, au jus, and baked potato were all excellent. Our server was likewise very pleasant and excellent. These are the only reasons this review is getting one star. Our entire reason for coming here, the prime rib, was, in a word, horrible. We have both been eating steaks since the 1960's. We quickly agreed that this prime rib was the single worst steak either of us has encountered in the last 55 *years* of eating steaks. Even the fat (of which there was a copious amount compared to the last time we had this exact meal here) was very gristly. The steak was inedible. And that was just the first one they brought us. It was so bad we sent it back. The second steak was as bad or worse as the first. Full of gristle and sinew. At this point we figured that sending it back for a third time probably wouldn't help, so we decided to try to eat it. We might have had a total of six ounces of edible steak between the two of us (3 ounces each). We were never even asked if the second steak was better than the first. Not sure where Mad Boar is sourcing their meat from these days, but in a month, the quality has taken a very steep nosedive. The surroundings here are beautiful, with the exception of the glaring light fixture above our table. Apparently the waitresses get so many complaints about these fixtures, that they bring you bar napkins and advise you to unscrew the light bulbs. Hint to management: there exist partially silvered light bulbs (which you are actually using in some of these fixtures) which still illuminate the table but don't glare in the patron's eyes. read more

The Mad Boar is a great midway location between Goldsboro and Wilmington to meet friends. Its a beautiful place and the staff is friendly. The food however is horrible. I've eaten there twice and unless things change, I'll stick to appetizers only in the bar. Its really gas station quality food. read more

Fourth time eating at the Mad Boar and what a huge disappointment! The ribs were way over cooked, charred actually. The chicken breast was also over cooked and the cole slaw was old - needed to be thrown out! We ordered a slice of the lemon icebox pie and the chocolate cake to take home and when we went to eat them later that evening, the pie slice was about 5 bites (teeny weeny slice for $7) and the cake was dry and stale. "I guess I'll eat it" was the sentiment of all of us. We got six different items to go for a nearby business luncheon. Undercooked Boar Burger which contains pork and sausage was concerning. After cooking it further , it still tasted so so. A turkey sandwich contained a thick cut single slice of turkey--picture the turkey version of a slice of SPAM. Nasty. A chicken sandwich even done poorly, greasy and person ate half before abandoning the rest. I ate here four years ago and had a terrible meal. Thought it may have improved with time--incorrect. We were very pleasantly surprised to find The Mad Boar. It is immediately off the exit- easy on and off. In the endless signs for fast food, we were happy to see something else. I couldn't believe a restaurant with this amount of character is in the little town. The decor looks very traditional old steak house. Lots of antique hanging lamps and heavy woodwork. The main bar was brought from Europe in one piece. Lots of very intricate woodwork. There is a Tesla charging station with several kiosks directly in front of the restaurant. Service was great. We had lunch at 3:30 on a Friday. Our server was very polite and quick to respond. I had the Mad Boar pulled pork sandwich. Nice thick pieces of pork with a coarse chopped coleslaw on a perfectly toasted brioche bun. It came with crisp potato wedges and I added the salad bar. I really enjoyed everything. My husband had the pork loin sandwich which came on toasted bread with cheddar. He selected sweet potato wedges that were served with a side of cinnamon butter. He said mine was very good, but his was better. The pork loin tasted like it was homemade. The cinnamon butter was such a sweet contrast. So yummy. It was just a quick stop for lunch, so we didn't stay long. We'll definitely keep it as a stop for future trips. I definitely recommend. read more

You can get the same steak on a biscuit at bojangles next door. First of the two tiny, $26 ribeyes that I was served was cooked so that one half of the steak was medium and the other half was rare. This is to be expected when cooking a dollar store quality steak that is 1/3" thick. Quality ribeyes are cut 1" thick at least. It is impossible to cook a paper thin slice of meat to to any sort of temperature. When confronted with these facts, both the manager and the chef came to speak with us. The chef literally stated that he had ordered cheap steak this week. He stated that sometimes he gets 15 and up (decent quality) and sometimes 15 and down (frozen, prepacked discount steak). So if you purchase a steak from here, it will be pure luck whether you get what you're paying for. I had visited this restaurant the previous week and the steak that a coworker ordered looked ok, not great, perhaps 3/4", but not this garbage. The chef confirmed that he ordered different (cheap) steak this week. Any competent management at a midrange steak house would comp meals of such evidently poor quality, instead these just muttered insincere and careless apologies, while making it clear they had no intention of making things right. Humorously, when I asked if the manager actually disagreed with anything I was complaining about, he said that he in fact did agree that the food they were serving was cheap crap this week, much like the chef who confirmed this fact earlier. Clearly the bottom line for management at this restaurant is profit at the cost of nonexistent service and low quality. Don't waste your money on this place. You can get the same steak on a biscuit next door at bojangles for $2. Huge restaurant, looks like a cool place, but the ambiance is overshadowed by the TERRIBLE SERVICE. The "bartender" (who actually did everything else BUT tend the bar) ignored us for a full 15 minutes despite us being seated directly in front of her. We actually walked out (which I have never had to do before) over the lack of service. Don't waste your time going here unless you enjoy being ignored. read more

The ambience is awesome! Gorgeous building and lots of cool features from the molded ceilings to the carved bar, and it's literally, huge. But.... everything quickly goes down from there, lackluster, slow service from a waitress who didn't even know the specials or which beers they currently had on tap. Staff never cleared dishes from the overly greasy app (just because it's fried doesn't mean you leave a pool of oil in the bottom of the plate) or filled water glasses. My husband had the "bone in" pork chop which was about 1/4" think and had a small bone. More of a tenderloin cut. He did say the apple pecan relish was good and his grilled corn-seasonal veg, was the tastiest thing we had between the two of us. My French dip was just meh- overly salty and I had to request the au jous- a little ridiculous for a sandwich that has "dip" in the title. Overall. We would've rather just spent the hour+ somewhere more deserving. We definitely won't be back here. read more

Then 25 minutes and still not get our waters we were so frustrated and concerned about the wedding we were going to that we went to Bojangles across the road. Nice ambience, really odd for a place like Wallace. Very limited menu, I came for lunch and there's not a lot to choose from. I figured that they must specialize in their menu. True enough, The Old World Dip sandwich is pretty inspired, it comes with its own au jus. Even my sweet potato fries comes with a cinnamon-sugar butter. The au jus, however, tastes more like beef stock (hello Swanson!) rather than real jus. Other than this, I think it's a pretty quaint place to eat when you're in this part of town. read more

The Mad Boar lunch was a Mad Mess. We were a group of nine where seven of us ordered salad bar- easy, right? You would think so. Our waitress, Dawn, only had two plates to bring to our table and we were all finished eating our salad bar meals about 30 minutes after ordering- no sign of the hamburger and chicken tenders our other two ordered. We had to go ask Dawn where these plates were and she responded "oh I should go check" as if she had completely forgot. Then the plates come out not even two minutes later so obviously they had been ready for who knows how long. If that wasn't enough, once these two were done with their meals we sat waiting for over 15 more minutes so we could get the check. For a table of 9 it was not good service, for a table of 2 it wouldn't have been good. We had to, again, get up from our table and try to find Dawn. She was busy so another waitress, Julie, helped us out. She was wonderful and helpful and split our checks for us so we could finally get out of there. If that wasn't enough, we were charged automatic 18% gratuity because we were a large party. I understand this "policy" in some cases but this amount of gratuity demands that level of service which we absolutely did not receive. If we were not so behind on time because of how forgotten we were as guests we would have spoken to the manager to dispute this amount of tip. The food was okay, good, nothing too special. We stop here frequently because they have EV chargers for our car. The charger didn't work. The shrimp appetizer was oddly soupy. The seafood fry was good. The shrimp were spicy and delicious. Pork sandwich was bland. Service: We were seated at an uncleaned booth. This was attended to. The drinks, app and main came out on time with a smile. We ordered chocolate cake for dessert and waited 20 inexplicable minutes for its arrival. It was inedible dry. Yelling followed by angrier yelling then crying from the back. WTAF? First time visit and most likely the last. Now granted we had a party of 9 but the kitchen has got to get it together. Out of 6 adults three of us has the wrong cooked steak, the messed up a kids meal, and loaded fries. The wait staff was amazing and the manager was very kind but they have to fix that kitchen staff! They don't know the difference in medium and rare. While the manager was quick to fix things and bring it out his self we waited over an 1.5 for our food. Then additional 5-10 minutes to fix the problems. Needless to say we eventually got tired of sending it back.. Seems very odd. Eaten here a few times because it's very local to me. I always am optimistic but always disappointed. Price is around $20/pp and it neighbors a really nice 36 hole golf course. They also have a bank of chargers for electric vehicles which always seem to be completely empty so maybe they are looking for a different customer than me. For $20 I would not expect paper wrapped mismatched cutlery. Maybe the cutlery is their thing. It's certainly possible. If it were quality silverware I wouldn't have a problem but it's dollar store thin. Service is always average at best. Food is fine, nothing great but it's ok. Bar smells like a bar. I think they need to figure out who they are. Food and service is worth $10, not double that. read more
