This was the first time we had been back to the Madcapper in several years and it was the best! Waitstaff was extremely helpful and friendly helping me to pick out a beer on tap. Food was wonderful! tried the Margherita pizza, wings and the spinach artichoke dip all were super tasty and generous shareable portions. Been coming here on and off for a long time. Always good service. If you're ordering a sandwich get the Cuban. Best one I've ever had!! Just the right amount of mustard and they don't skimp on the meat. Had steak fries with it and it was a nice change from those coated fries - which I tolerate - that are all the rage these days. We used to live in Stillwater and the Capper was always a go to. Back visiting and had to stop for a capper for a burger. It was a little disappointing... guess you can't go home again. My friend and I both had tummy issues after eating there... the guys were fine. I had the Rueben , it was good but corned beef was alittle dry. The burger looked good, my husband liked it. Well the menu looked great but we really couldnt get past the service to even place an order. Sat at the bar and finally managed to order a hot cider with rum.....dont get that. $7.50 for some water with a cinnamon stick and a shot of rum. Listen this used to be my favorite restaurant to eat at I must've gone 30+ times. The food was always great and the price wasent to high, the people were nice. However They recently switched owners and thats when things got bad. They changed the entire menu and made it much more clean with less decoration. Seems pretty good except for one thing everything is at least 5$ more and they give about half the food It wasn't even that great. Its safe to say that I won't be needing to go back again. Came here for lunch with a coworker and thought it was ok. We parked in a lot on a back street and walked in through the back door. The bar wasn't crowded and we got prompt attention. I had the buffalo chicken wrap for lunch with fries and while it was fine, they didn't put the buffalo sauce in the wrap! I had to pour it on myself which kind of defeated the purpose of ordering the buffalo chicken wrap as it was simply a chicken wrap with sauce on the side. If you come in with the right expectations you won't be disappointed. This is a slight step up from a dive, but not quite a classy pub; sort of that in between. This place does have a quirky charm though. It has that old establishment feeling that is both inviting and warm. At the same time there is a lot of energy here that makes it fun and invigorating. The drink options are pretty good. They have a really solid selection of beer and your standard cocktail options. The food choices are your standard bar options that will go well with your beer/cocktail, but you probably will enjoy it more the more you have had to drink. This is the kind of place you go to with a group of friends to hang out, have some good drinks, eat some bar food, and just enjoy yourself. Totally impressed by this place! Finished up our day trip to the St. Croix River valley by swinging by this place. Entered the bar to find the place pretty packed. Definitely a sports bar chock full of memorabilia covering the walls. We were only trying to find a spot at the bar, and after a few groups were called to be seated we were able to grab just that. Perusing the tap list, I was pleasantly surprised by what the place carried. I'd definitely call it an above average selection. Me and the lady each asked questions about some of the taps we had yet to taste and were given samples to taste as well as a nice, personal overview from our bartender, Matt. We each settled on our selections, and were given some tasty beverages. Speaking of our bartender, he was very personable and eager to chat about the goings ons of the sporting events taking place (Gopher hockey, Tigers/Rangers, even got some Lynx chatter). He was very friendly and took the time to empathize with the girlfriend when the Tigers were struggling and even slid an unnecessary pour in front of us (Lift Bridge Harvester - quite nice). Overall a great first experience, and am not far off of a five, but I'd like to try the food before I go that far. read more

The Mad Capper has survived in Stillwater for many years, despite the high turn around of other restaurants in the area. It's a solid staple, and an easy option for grabbing a quick drink or bite to eat with a group. Their beer tap list is decent, offering local MN options from breweries like Fulton and Surly. Their food is better than average as well. For appetizers, we had fried cheese curds (really good!), and the jalapeno poppers. As an entree, I would recommend the french dip. The sandwich had the perfect bread to meat ratio! Overall, I wasn't expecting much out of Mad Capper, and was pleasantly surprised by my experience here! read more

Stumbled into the mad capper during a weekend in Stillwater. Funky atmosphere with awesome bartenders- Nate and Aylin! They are a cute hard working couple! We connected as we both live/d in Florida. When visiting my hometown I always make my way to the Mad Capper - they have great drink specials, and the food is well bar food, however, they offer a twist to the typical bar food that is usually offered. I had the Cucumber sandwich with bacon, avocado, and cream cheese (lightened with milk) it was delicious and refreshing. The bar staff and waitrons are also pretty nice and entertaining. read more

WHAT! I stopped by yelp to see how my favorite bar in Stillwater was faring and was shocked to see so many poor reviews! My fiancee and I live in walking distance from downtown Stillwater and choose to go to Mad Capper for dinner and a beer every single time we want bar style food. We started with Pub Monique and a combination of the consistently terrible service, passable food and loud bar atmosphere drove us away after 4 or 5 attempts. Then we headed for Whiteys where the atmosphere is much better, service is good but the food is just acceptable, no more. Bounced around the other bar and grills and restaurants in the area, I've been to them all at least 3 times, many much more, and we keep coming back to Mad Capper for a fantastic turkey burger, walleye sandwich, hog wings, cuban and regular burger along with a great tap list and friendly service. On a Sunday evening, my friend and I decided to wonder into the Mad Capper for a drink and a sandwich - first mistake. I had been there previously and it had been just fine. Second mistake was sitting at the bar. The service was nonexistent. The bartender was more interested in watching the basketball game on TV and chatting about movies with his patrons. I couldn't get his attention to order a drink and dinner. Isn't that his job to pay attention to me - his customer - and to service me. (He is working for tips, right? Tips - Temporary Insurance of Personal Service.) The food was decent - nothing worth noting. The drinks were low-grade and over-priced. (I had only one because the bartender never came around and asked if I wanted a second.) I won't be going back, and my friend agreed as we were leaving. We know we can do better in Stillwater; too many other venues to check out. What the Mad Capper needs is a "secret shopper" to give them an honest review (in addition to this one). read more

Went here tonight with the girlfriend, wanted to try something different. Very slow inside, only one other table when we were there. Server was prompt, and attentive. Had a very decent tap list, and a surprising amount of can and bottle beer too. Ordered the Juicy Lucy special, and potato skins. Juicy came out the same time as the skins but I think we said to do that. Juicy was a ver normal bar burger, nothing to write home about but nothing terrible either. The tots I had were perfect, crunchy and light, just how they should be. The potato skins were just the skins with bacon and cheese, and weren't too hot when they came out. Could have been a little more to them, hotter so they cheese is still melted and maybe some parsley on them, but that's just me. First off, I think the response to the bachelorette partys comment is rude and uncalled for. I wish I would have seen these reviews before checking out Mad Capper because I never would have supported a restaurant who encourages their employees to not treat the customer as if they should have the best possible experience. My own experience at this restaurant was poor also. My friends and I waited for a table for about 30min. It wasn't the wait that bugged us but that there is nowhere to wait. When we were seated our server took about ten minutes to get to us. We didn't order alcohol and that seemed to upset him to the point where he decided we didn't need good service. The food was bad too. Go somewhere else, it's not worth the hassle unless you are "one of the regulars". read more

Dreadful. As somewhat of a 'local' I've been here many times over the years. I've seen their best, and now I've tasted the worst. Their menu is 20 years old-nothing new. Hey, stop down at the Pub 112 to see what a menu from 2014 looks like! For almost 12 bucks my friends and I all got the fish dinner. Everyone had the same final opinion has mine-horrible, and horribly overpriced. The cole slaw had a nasty aroma that I was afraid to eat. The fish was this cold, overdone, tasteless, breaded slab that looked liked it spent the last 3 months frozen at the bottom of the freezer. The fries? Well, I've had better at Mcdonalds. Service was fine-should have been because there were only 6 other people in the place at 6PM on a Wednesday. All in all very disappointing. Not sure what's happening with the old school bar/resturants in Stillwater, but they sure are going down hill. If any place needs a Bar Rescue, it's this place. read more

Start with a cold tap beer which has a great rotating selection. Then grab a menu and start at the fantastic appetizers, I recommend the walleye stuffed tater tots and saloon chips, 5 Stars on the wings! Hand battered chicken tenders and cheese curds!! After that something light, maybe a chipotle veggie burger or an aztec salad for me. Monday night is half priced burger night, Tuesday is 2$ off all tall boy beer, Wednesday night kids eat free, Thursday All Tap beer is 2$ off from 6 - close, Friday is all you can eat fish fry 5-close and happy hour monday - friday from 3-6 cant be beat!! My family of eight dropped in here over the holiday season to grab lunch after taking family portraits down the street. We grabbed the only large table; it's up the stairs in the back. Very cozy! Our server was attentive & friendly. The portions were large, but nothing out of the ordinary.
