Rudest owner ever. Zero sense of customer service. Actually took an order for a birthday cake, then was on vacation when it was time to pick it up. Never called to say they wouldn't be able to make the cake, just didn't do it. Then the obnoxious owner has the audacity to say I am in the wrong for posting a review about the situation. We stopped by the bakery to grab a stuffy, not a typical place you would expect to find a Stuffy, but I highly recommend it! The stuffed quahog was very flavorful and had perfect spice from the Portuguese chorizo, clams and peppers. You can tell they were fresh and homemade because they weren't dried out like most others that are reheated. The staff were friendly and there were just enough tables to sit down for a quick snack. One weekend afternoon in April 2026 I decided to pastry taste five spots in Newport Rhode Island. Mad Hatter came in 1 of 5. The place is very cute, the staff was very helpful, the selection was great and the treats were exceptional. I got the cinnamon covered muffin, lemon scone, and apple fritter. All three were excellent and the cinnamon muffin had a great flavor I've never had before. All the items were not too sweet and were flavored well. This spot is highly recommended. read more

We were in Rhode Island and we originally went in for a cake for a birthday celebration but they only had cupcakes so we got one large chocolate cupcake and an assortment or the different kinds they have available. It was a good thing we did because everyone loved it. You need to order a few days ahead for a cake. I tried the raspberry cupcake and the chocolate cupcake and they were delicious. I think the raspberry cupcake had a lemon flavor to it, if I'm. It mistaken and I can't forget it, yummy! The service was very cordial and nice and quick. They even gave us candles and had plastic knives for cutting. We send in at 1:30pm and the shop closes at 2:00pm. I ordered a last minute Birthday cake white/white with raspberry filling . It was AMAZING !!!!!! A little pricy , but it was my fault waiting too long to order so I didn't mind one bit . I was very impressed with this bakery. It was clean,spacious and well lit. Unlike its competitors downtown they open early daily with the exception of Mondays (this is the one day a week that they are closed). They have a decent selection of premade deserts. The staff were friendly and incredibly prompt. They accept cash and credit ($10 minimum for card transactions). I would highly recommend this bakery to others. read more

She called and said it was too hard to make and that I needed to chose something from her website that she has made before. She was RUDE and lost my business. This is the best bakery I have ever been to hands-down nobody can compare to them. The best tasting cakes and breads you ever wanna purchase. My only regret is that every time I walk by there never open. so when they are open and you get to go there and purchase all the goodies that are left, it's a real treat. I love this place. I ordered 2 dozen cupcakes from Georgetown Bakery on September 3rd for a morning event on Saturday, October 5th. Shortly before midnight on Friday I was notified that those cupcakes were stuck in Kentucky and would not arrive in time for the event. Mad Hatter not only picked up my call at 7:00am on Saturday (yes, before business hours!), they were so kind and helpful and, incredibly, had 2 dozen absolutely gorgeous fresh cupcakes in an impressive variety of flavors ready to go barely two hours later. Everyone at the event raved about how delicious they were, and no one was surprised to hear that they came from Mad Hatter. I have never had such a moist scone. The bakery itself is simple to the point and has a great variety. I love how down to earth it is. I think the blueberry scone definitely gave me a new perspective and set my palette to have new expectations for scones. Audra, the owner, and her small but dedicated staff make all of the pastries, cakes, and other diet-busting confections from scratch every day, and you can really taste the love and the quality that go into each sweet sold at this off the beaten path hidden gem! The bakery may look simple on the outside, with rustic chalkboard decorations and limited seating, but don't be fooled. Dig into one of their many creative cupcake offerings, like my favorite Lemon Raspberry, stuffed with fresh fruit preserves, or the seasonal "Fish and Chips" cupcake available during the summer (a chocolate chip cake topped with blue buttercream frosting and Swedish Fish candy!), and you'll see why Mat Hatter is worth a visit. Not in a cupcake mood? No worries! The Lemon Squares are particularly masterful, and actually taste fresh, unlike the canned filling lemon bars a lot of other bakeries carry. I'm a lemon square aficionado, and these are some of the best I've ever had! I also give high marks to the Double Chocolate Cookie and the classic Irish Soda Bread, which is moist and delicious. I really wanted to like this place, I really did. I dropped by one day to try out their baked goods and get something plain and simple for the husband who was home sick with a stomach bug of sorts and couldn't eat much. I got their red velvet cupcake and blueberry muffin for me while I got a croissant and corn muffin for the husband. The red velvet was okay; it wasn't dry and the flavor was decent but the frosting I thought was a bit too sweet and not enough cream cheese. I was going to give this place a 3...until I had the muffin. I'm not sure if they don't use butter or what but it was the blandest blueberry muffin I've ever had. I only had three bites of it because I couldn't stomach another tasteless bite. Considering that my husband was a sick and couldn't taste much of his food, he said the croissant and muffin was okay. A few days later he had a croissant at Shaw's and said that tasted much better than the one I got here. Sad to say it, but I doubt I'll be back. read more

My daughter has celiacs and thus eats gluten free. I asked the woman who answered the phone if they are able to make a gluten free cake, her response was "No, were a real bakery." Yummy is the best word for this bakery. Had a specialty cake for my daughter's birthday, which couldn't have been more perfect. I had asked for a old McDonald theme and they hit it on the head, down to the barn. Cake was moist and delicious. Didn't get dry on the second day (it only lasted two days in our h house). We got off our cruise ship, and instead of taking an excursion, we opted to just wander through Providence. When we came down the street and saw this bakery, looked in through the windows, we knew we'd have to have a little indulgence. The girl behind the counter was very helpful as we asked about several different cupcakes, and we ended up choosing two, a basic vanilla with lots of icing for our daughter, and their signature cupcake, the Mad Hatter. That's their fancy version of a Hostess cupcake, and I must say, a million times better! We went outside onto a bench and devoured telling everyone that walked by that this was the best place and they should stop in. I have buyer's remorse when it comes to Mad Hatter Bakery as I really wanted one of their amazing looking cupcakes but I went with a very bland chocolate oatmeal cookie and an interesting French toast muffin instead. The cookie was super dry and way overpriced for its quality level. The French toast muffin was great - messy but sweet and gooey and definitely yummy. The coffee was a huge disappointment - it featured cinnamon and that was all you could taste. They also didn't put nearly enough cream and we had to ask for more which they didn't seem overly keen on doing. So, my suggestion is yes, definitely visit but go for the cupcakes. Those certainly appeared to be the stars of the baked goods section and avoid the cookies. read more
