First, the pastry shell has to be crispy and flaky. Second, the filling has to have just the right amount of sweetness. Not too sweet, but not tart either. And third, the most important thing a Turnover should possess, plenty of sugar icing on top. You get all three of these right, you make an outstanding Turnover. Carolena's definitely gets it right. I ride my bike by this bakeshop many times during the week and there have been times, early in the morning, when you can smell them being baked. Turnovers have a very distinctive aroma when they are in an oven. I'm not usually one for Cherry filling because most bakeshops use that generic, overly sweet Maraschino Cherry Pie filling that you find in supermarkets. Carolena's uses a Bing Cherry filling, and it makes a world of difference in taste and appearance when you bite into it. The other Turnover I purchased was Apple and the filling in that one was perfectly sweetened, with just the right amount of Cinnamon. I spoke with one of the owners while I ate my pastries and he told me that all of their offerings are nut free, a rarity in most bakeshops. They are catering to those with nut allergies and that limits their selection of baked goods. He also told me that they are planning to offer more gluten free wares in the future. If you're expecting a wide selection of pastries, this is not the place for you. It's not Borelli's in Coventry or Vienna Bakery in Barrington. It's a small artisan bakeshop. But what they make, they make well.

Stopped by Colvitto's Pizza and Bakery today on my way to meet with a friend. A lot of people…read morementioned them when we had our pizza strip nominations for March Madness, so since I was in the area I made a quick detour for a strip and a zeppole (tis the season, after all) The inside is larger than you expect, with plenty of seating if you wanted to hang out and eat your goodies. I got there around 11am but they still had a wide selection of calzones, pastries and pizza available. The ladies working the counter were very nice and quick as well. Before long I had my pizza strip and zeppole, and was on my way. The pizza strip at first was sweet. Almost too sweet for me, but as I continued, the sweetness faded into balance with the crust and became quite enjoyable. It wasn't long before I polished it off. It is a softer strip, with a good amount of sauce on top. The zeppole was wonderful. The whipped cream was soft and pillowy inside delicate pastry. All of it was light as air and it was a struggle to stop at the hallway mark! But I had to save room for the lunch meeting so I forced myself to quit... For now! If you happen to be in the Narragansett area and are craving the Italian tastes of the city, make sure you stop to check it out for yourself!

As others have mentioned ruined you may think am I in the right place and you are. Just walk up the ramp and open the door to the smell of fresh bread. Plenty of options to choose from, I went with the Rosemary Garlic and will add photos when I get home and cut into this delicious smelling loaf at some point this weekend! Love supporting local small shops like this and if it is as good as it smells, I look forward to grabbing more next time I am in the area!

Guaranteed to be one of the best pastries you've ever tasted." The buttery layers melted in my mouth. The cinnamon was fragrant and did not dominate the flavor of the sweet pastry. I understand why they are the most popular item on the pastry menu. **Almond Danish -- My favorite in a close competition after a sampling. The almond paste gave them a pronounced nut flavor as well as a slightly chewy bite. **Monkey Bread pastry -- although fresh tasting, it was a little dry and only mildly flavorful. It was my least favorite. **Chocolate Chip Cookies -- crunchy at edges with a little chew and a pleasant aftertaste of butter. Excellent! As a novice baker of Sourdough Breads, I was pleased to learn that the Bakery has a Sourdough focus using sourdough starter for most products including the croissants believing it's healthier and easier to digest.
