Madcap has a few locations, but this is by far my favorite - especially this time of year with all the trees lit up downtown! If you are looking for high quality teas and coffees this is definitely a spot to stop in GR. The baristas here take such care of every ounce of coffee that is made here. This is my favorite coffee place period. They have the best cortado. My drink is always good here. They have to train 6 months before being allowed to make coffee, so you can be guaranteed quality. They are also top notch roasters, but a bit pricy for beans compared to other craft roasters around. That being said, you can get good African roasts here, since it's generally hard to guarantee consistency from African beans. Rowsters is probably the best alternative. Ferris is also good at their factory location, but not in their Holland location. read more

I'm upset. I've been to this joint several times so I decided to see what all the other Yelpers are saying about it. How is this place only 4 stars? What's wrong with you guys writing these 3 star reviews because "the coffee isn't even that good" and "this place isn't very cozy". Give me a break. Great ambience, very friendly employees and the coffee was delicious! The downfall for me is the lack of options. They only have one alternative milk (oat). They have 2 flavors of latte (vanilla and honey/honeycinnamon). Most places at least have a white mocha, but they only have a regular mocha. For the plain janes, this is okay! But I love flavors and don't care for regular mochas. It is quite pricey, but the quality is worth it. I ended up with a regular iced oatmilk latte and I enjoyed it. It tasted like warm milk with grounded peppercorns as a garnish. I understand you use herbs for a chai... but I really didn't like black pepper on my foam. The comfortable interior of Madcap can be easily seen from outside through its large landscaping windows. High ceilings and white washed walls accented with simple photography creates a relaxing atmosphere, and the music matches the mood well - I heard both Andrew Bird and Animal Collective playing. The cafe opened two months ago and still has the 'fresh' feel of a new cafe. Approaching the counter, one is greeted with a simple black on white menu-board and a clean, open counter. Among Madcap's offerings are french press coffees, pour-over coffees, espresso drinks, soups, and sandwiches (the latter was not offered during my visit.) They boast top-line equipment like a La Marzocco espresso machine and an awesome hot water dispenser. Madcap Coffee roasts their coffee with a smaller drum roaster downstairs and receives green beans through Cafe Imports as well as through certain 'direct trade' programs. To my excitement they offered an El Salvadorian "Cup of Excellence" (and it was excellent via the pour-over.) Sales tax is built into the prices and the POS machine is a Mac (kudos.) Employees were very friendly and helpful. My pour over coffee was served on a wooden platter with mugs and my single espresso was served with a glass of tonic. The drinks were excellent. Gosh, I love Madcap. Even when I have as little as five bucks in my bank account i'll still pop in to get a cup of whatever is roasting. The flavor is always top notch and every cup is made with extreme precision and care. The seasonal menus always please, and the usual flavors always hold true. The bagged coffee is worth every penny. I just finished a bag of Ardi I had for probably 6 months just a week ago and- let me tell you - I savored that thing as if it were made of pure, drinkable gold. The atmosphere is very relaxing and comfortable. During extremely busy times it can feel like a bustling New York Startbucks, yet, with the new standing tables and long banquet table, there's enough room to get out of the bustle. I know quite a few people who turn their noses up to Madcap because it's too "pretentious" and "hipster" for them. I can understand how you could get that vibe after visiting only once or twice. But, honestly, like a hot cup of a coffee, you need to hang around and let things cool down to really get a feel for the real atmosphere here. The staff is actually incredibly accommodating and friendly. After a few visits they remember your name, ask you how you've been, etc. etc. Also, theres only a few people behind that counter slowly brewing the coffee to perfection - you can't expect them to just pull the lever of a carafe and hand it to you in a minute (like it's a diner or something.) They're actually brewing the coffee for you, give it a few minutes, talk to somebody, breathe. It's only "hipster" or "pretentious" if you build it up to be. Step in, greet your barista politely, and be patient. It's quality, not quantity (or speed, if you will.) Enjoy your visit. I've been looking at photos of Madcap on my Instagram feed for over a year now, so when our dog had to go to the ophthalmologist in Grand Rapids, we stopped by for a latte after the appointment. I went in alone because we had a dog in the car, which forced me to interact with people outside my normal comfort zone. I survived, but barely. First, I have to say that I cannot even imagine what this place is like on Saturday morning. I arrived on Friday at 10:50 am and it was hectic. I waited ten full minutes for two decaf lattes, so my guess is Saturday morning wait times are insane. In true American form, I asked if their lattes came in a larger size then their standard cup - I believe it was a 8 ounce cup. I'm all about portion control, but if I'm going to pay nearly $5 for a latte I'd like it to be 12 ounces. I was told they do not size up. Meh. I also ordered two granola bars, a term I use lightly because these were really just oats smushed together with a whole lot of peanut butter. They were wet and sticky. My Mom really liked them, I did not. As I anticipated the coffee was flawless - creamy and perfect. I probably could have finished the darn thing on the way back to the car, but I paced myself. Being the hipsters that we are, we will probably go back to Madcap because the damn coffee is so good. What can I say, we are just those kinds of people. read more

The interior is great, sprinkled with couches, desks, stand-up tables, and a public restroom. Definitely a great place for chillin with an espresso before work. Looking for a calm place to study, do homework, or simply face-plant into a good book? Not your coffee spot. Loud hip hop mixed music added with the plethora of people trying to talk above it amidst their conversations, doesn't make for a good place to cozy up and get your education on unfortunately. The prices are higher than Starbucks, but so is the value: If you're looking for a cup of whipped sugar with a little coffee in the bottom, this might not be the café for you. Equally thoughtful is the café's minimal design, which is flooded with natural light and offers ample seating. They added two extra seats and a standing bar 8/12/14.
