I came in today with a clear reference photo of the haircut I wanted a clean, medium-length style with natural flow and volume (photo attached). What I ended up with looks nothing like it. The barber cut the sides way too short, the back is uneven and sticks up awkwardly, and the top is nowhere near the right length or shape. When I brought it up, the barber tried to make excuses, saying my hair wasn't as thick as the guy in the photo, but that doesn't justify ignoring the overall shape and proportions. He also insisted the back was "the same," even though it clearly isn't. This was a completely disappointing experience. Although they didn't charge me, now I'll have to wait weeks for it to grow out enough to fix. Steve is the guy. You walk in and feel the energy of an old New York barbershop. Steve approached Roberto and hung up his jacket and scarf basically welcoming him. It was his first time there and Steve made a lasting impression. All the barbers sport ties or bow ties. The end result was more and better than expected. Steve cut Roberto's hair with such confidence (he's no fish out of water!) The side fade, the cut, the head, shoulder, & back massage. Excellent experience! Roberto will most surly return for the cleanup in three weeks which will enable his haircut to last another two to three weeks. Though some may think the price point is high it actually works out to be inexpensive as you are able to return for a cleanup between haircuts. Highly recommend - I've been going to Made Man barbershop for just over three years now and can't imagine going anywhere else. The customer service & welcoming environment brings back the barbershop vibe in the middle of Flatiron. In my humble opinion - my barber, Dardan, is one of the best barbers in NYC. We've gone with a number of different looks over the years and with each different cut he's taken my thoughts and brought them to life (fades, long hair, short hair etc..). Beyond his A+ work , his attention to detail & timeliness makes the process like clockwork.. Made man is lucky to have him in the shop ! I ask him to do nothing on the top but a slight trim and he goes insane with the thinning shears, and before I really knew what was going on he'd cut half the length off, leaving the hair straggly. I came here before and left before coming back because it's near my office. My recent and last time jogged my memory why I stopped coming here in the first place. Awful awful haircut. The only reason I made a yelp account and am writing a review is because of it. I do not care that they're beyond rude, it's NY. But if you're going to be rude give a good haircut or at least someone accurate to the picture you're shown. My sides are shaved to nothing all the way up to my part. I have a tiny patch of long hair on the top and have no idea what to do with my hair. Really bummed with my experience. I was looking for a new haircut and new barber so I booked the 40 minute master haircut with Sam Jr. that includes a consultation, haircut, and wash. I walked in, said I had an appointment, was brought to a barber who just started cutting my hair with no questions asked. Got about a 15 minute below average haircut, not even a cut I liked or wanted. When I went to check out the receptionist said I sat with the wrong barber even though they brought me to that incorrect barber. And yet I still got charged $70 for the master cut even though I had no consultation, no wash, and didn't get the barber I booked with. I don't blame either barber, just seems like really terrible management that totally ripped me off and screwed up my haircut experience big time. Great haircut but Pricing is a problem. I recommend confirming the price upon arrival before getting the cut. The website states a basic cut is $35. I was charged $40 (plus tax), I was told the price went up. When I returned I was charged $45 (plus tax), this time I was advised (by a smug cashier) that my stylist was promoted, hence the higher price. Based on other reviews, it looks like I got away without any real damage. I have paid much higher for cuts but the rates are always confirmed. Prices for each stylist needs to be listed on their website or in the shop. IF I decide to return I now have to confirm the price when I arrive (something customers shouldn't have to do). I asked my friend Evan where he gets his beautiful locks cut and he told me about this place. He made an appointment for me, and I was all set. Fast forward to the day of the cut... Darden, his barber, was mega friendly and happy despite the gloominess outside (it was a cloudy, rainy day in NYC). He was very meticulous and made sure to ask questions on what I wanted. I gotta say... This has been by far one of THE best haircuts I've had since I had short hair. The fade was fantastic, the cut for the top was superb... I came in wearing a beanie, so I asked for no product, and even then, I looked good AF. I highly recommend this place. All the other barbers were nice, and chatty with their customers. Incredible. Kenny gave me a phenomenal haircut and pricing wasn't outrageous, $37 + $7 tip. The results are top tier (for weddings I've paid $70 - $100 for similar haircuts). I typically spend $25 a cut but my old barber left the neighborhood. I struggled to find a replacement until I tried Made Man during Yon Kippur. They were the only barbershop open, and not only did they save me before my trip, but I found my new spot. Highly recommend it. read more

I hate to give a bad review since my barber seemed to mean well but, well, this is the worst haircut I can remember ever getting. I asked to keep most of the length on top (just trim down a bit) and bring the sides in. What happened afterwards I couldn't believe...he just took every buzzer he had and took off what had to be 2/3 - 3/4 of all of my hair...it's a 1/2 inch short of an army cut. I was squirming in my seat but felt rude saying anything and wondered if I was just being a bit ridiculous...thinking that maybe when it was dry it would look better. I should have trusted my instincts. I got the feeling I would have gotten exactly this buzzed up mess no matter what I told him in the beginning. I put some onus on me for not saying something when I thought he was taking way too much off and with no shape whatsoever (it's just one rounded off buzz cut...the idea was to have flowy hair on top and tight sides). But even then, by the time it was clear he was ruining my hair, it frankly was too late anyway. I won't say I won't ever go back...maybe it was that particular stylist...perhaps I'd give them another shot, but it's not likely. FWIW, I did tip him nicely any way...I won't stiff someone. That said, I am pretty sure he was clear he messed up and he probably should have refused the tip. read more

I went to Eli at the Made Man Barber Shop just off Broadway at West 38th Street. The address is 1400 Broadway. I requested conversational. I was really impressed. Eli gave me a masterful hair cut. He made excellent conversation. He asked me if I preferred scissors or a razor. I said scissors and a razor when needed. Came here and was seen by Ray. I wish I could say it was a good experience. I wish I could say it was a mediocre experience. I *really* wish he didn't completely ruin my hair. I came here for an undercut sorta thing. Not hard to do, most barbers have me in and out within ten minutes. He didn't even have to cut the top of my hair (the long part) -- except that he did... by mistake. First, he tied my hair up top and buzzed away while talking about getting high on the job; which in retrospect should have made me ask for another barber but I mean how often do you get a sober barber in NYC? After he finished this macabre massacre he untied my hair and clumps of my long hair (the hair on top that he was NOT supposed to cut) started falling off my head. I mean clumps. He noticed it and tried to change the subject. I must have been in shock or denial because I still paid and I still tipped him 5$ on top of the 20$ haircut. I only had 23$ cash on me so I asked him to break my 20 and I'll give the tip in cash and pay the cut with my card. He charged my card an extra 3.99$ WITHOUT TELLING ME and still took the 5$ tip. If you're going to throw on a useless and excessive amount of 4$ on a debit card you need to at least let the customer know. Never mind that it costs you less than a cent to run one card. If that's not an indication of how this place treats it's customers then I don't know what is. read more
