I am an old Freestyle Barber Shop customer from when they used to be where the FedEx Office Print is. Once they moved from that location I lost touch with them and to find new barbers. It was not until recently that I was driving by their current location and I had to do a double check, I was like "that looks like Leena...". I took note of the location and returned finally to get a haircut with Eddie on the day NYC looked like Mars during the Canada wild fire days. i like this place. With their $15 cut.. it's $3-5 or so more than the standard NY 'bargain barber' but well worth it. The two biggest pros is that everyone who works there seems to know what they're doing, you get in and out very quickly. I don't really care who cuts my hair there because they're all solid. and fast. although the pretty girl by the door seems to remember me and the things about how I like my hair cut that I don't remember. I never have waited more than 10 minutes which is awesome. Also I appreciate the fact that when I'm in the chair it's a quick process. I'm a balding guy and it shouldn't take more than six or seven minutes for someone to cut my hair. I don't really care if the guy who needs a 20 minute haircut pays the same $15 as me, I just want to get my hair cut and be on my way.. I feel like haircutters often preten it takes longer or do the fake trimming thing just because they want me to think I got my moneys worth. Am I the only person who overthinks mens haircut etiquette like this?? Cons the waiting area seats are uncomfortable but you're not sitting there long. I've had my hair cut by these people 3 times now. They always have a chair free and the service is quick, yet top notch. For $17 this place is all I've ever wanted from a barber: fast, cheap, convenient and good. All three times I've had a different person do my hair and have been very satisfied. I have been coming here for quite some time. I spent a lot of time finding a decent barber shop that charges $20. I get my haircut frequently (every 2-3 weeks), and have a pretty simple cut as I keep my hair short. After checking out several other places, I finally settled on Freestyle. The quality of cut varies from barber to barber here, but I finally started having Lena cut my hair on a regular basis. However, earlier this week, once I was in the chair mid-cut, Lena informs that she has increased her rate to $30. Mind you, every other barber at Freestyle is still charging $20. I was a bit miffed at the last minute notice as well as the 50% unilateral increase. I paid her and tipped with a smile, but sadly, I will not be returning. There are countless places to get my haircut at the $30+ range, so if I am going to pay that rate, I owe it to myself to explore my options. That being said, there are a number of places in the hood that are well reviewed and remain in the $20 range. Additionally, I assume one of them will provide me with a respectable cut. I will give them a try and find a new barber. I am only writing this review so that Lena knows that there are consequences to simply increasing the rate without considering how this might impact longstanding, regular customers. Now she knows. I seem to have a very strong aversion towards the phrase "hair salon" so I thought I'd try a barbershop for a quick, inexpensive cut. I know I know, barbershops are generally for men, but they assured me over the phone that they did women's cuts too, and I was just looking for a simple trim so figured this couldn't do too much harm. Well, I came out loving the service and painstaking attention, but in complete despair at what was going on on my head. In terms of everything except final result, my barber was absolutely wonderful. I explained what I wanted, some layers and keep the same v-shape (my request at every cut), and he was extremely kind, focused, methodical, and dedicated - I really couldn't have asked for anyone better. But when he finished, there were no layers discernible whatsoever, and the ends looked more or less like I'd gathered all my hair together and chopped it all at the same length. It was not at all what I wanted, but I paid and left to go get it fixed rather than stay and possibly get more distressed. Apart from my tribulations though, I actually really liked the place overall! It's small, just four seats, but bright and comfortable. There was a steady stream of people (a couple of women too) forming quite a line, and everyone was willing to wait, which was nice to see. I realize this might not be the fairest assessment of Freestyle since I'm in the minority in their clientele, but I did expect a cut even a little closer to what I was hoping for. I am wary of the 5-star yelp reviews for haircuts, particularly cheap haircuts. I was looking for a high quality haircut around the $30-35 range on the west side. Fellow Barber had no appointments and I didn't have a lot of flexibility in my schedule so I came here, on the strength of the yelp reviews. Of course you are not going to get an $80 haircut for $20, but I did feel like Zoya gave me a really good $30 haircut for $20. I was a little concerned by the reviews that said how quick the cuts were, but she was careful, didn't rush and got the details right and was generally a pleasant person to work with. The atmosphere was mostly nonexistent but the physical room was ok and they were playing a decent radio station. There were no TV screens, which I appreciated. The cut I requested was also not cookie-cutter. It included no lines around the ears, not a lot of clipper work. Pretty much all scissor work with some use of the thinning scissors and some texture. It was all done well, exactly as I requested. Two weeks later, the cut still looks good. In short, good value haircut. read more

Wow. Let me encapsulate my review thusly: I got home and my fiancee said it was the best cut I had ever had. To embellish a little, I've been to plenty of salons and barbers from Delaware to Upstate NY. This cut was on par with each, but the stylist (can't remember his name) took time at the end to blow dry everything with the dryer and brush so that 1. all the cut hairs were completely removed and blown away and 2. my hair looked like it was styled in preparation for a photo shoot. With only a few words of direction at the beginning ("like it looks now, but shorter"), he not only nailed the style I have, but improved it slightly. And here's the punchline: $15 + tip. If they accepted credit cards, I would give them 6 stars. As for the "Russian babes", I only saw Zoya who's easy on the eyes, but it was otherwise nothing but men. But who cares -- $15!! I normally go to a barber shop only a few blocks from here but after having my normal guy start to disappoint me the last few times I thought it was time to try somewhere new. I usually pay $12 for a standard men's haircut (and most other barbers I've been to are also $12-14). Freestyle charges $15 which is $3 more than I normally pay but it's still a good deal (as long as I can get a haircut plus tip and not have to take more than $20 from an ATM I'm game). Freestyle is a small shop. I think I remember them having 4 barbers on duty- 3 Russian looking women (in their 30s-40s) and 1 guy. From the looks of the place I would say they recently renovated in the not so distant past. The place looks nice and modern and my only issue is that the waiting bench that matches their new furniture is incredibly uncomfortable and I wouldn't want to wait there for longer than 10 or so minutes. Besides asking me how I'd like my haircut and thanking me for the tip the only time the woman who cut my hair said anything was to check if I liked the haircut in the end, there was no chit chat whatsoever. I don't usually like a chatty barber but it turns out I like them to at least say a few things to me during the process. But from my experience Russian women are all business and this was no exception. I will say that the location is very convenient, the place (other than the hair on the ground) was modern and clean, and I came away from the place with a good haircut. This is a cute little Russian-run barbershop located on West 25th and 7th Ave. The barbershop was small but uncrowded and very clean. I did not have to wait and was seated as soon as I entered. The barber was attentive to my requests. He understood what I wanted. There was no chitchat (which is what I prefer) and he really focused on my hair. Good place! A small barber shop with four 'stations'. I went on a Thursday at 5:15pm and I literally walked out 15/20 minutes later with a good haircut. I love this place. One of the first times I went there, Leena cut my hair. The next day I had a job interview, and I got the job! You can't compete with that kind of luck. Of all the cheaper barber shops I've visited, I haven't once seen a female barber. Alas, when it was my turn I got the guy. He worked quick and checked in multiple times to make sure the cut was to my liking. After paying and tipping, he offered me a shot of vodka. I've been getting my hair cut at Freestyle Barber Shop for about four years now. This four-chair, Russian-owned barber shop is a hidden gem in Manhattan that's staffed by a great crew of barbers. For all but one of my visits, my hair has been cut entirely by Leena. There is no one else in the city that I will trust to cut my hair. Each and every time, she gives me the perfect haircut - exactly what I'm looking for. She knows me and I've made it to the point where she simply asks, "the usual?" I always leave with a crisp, clean haircut. There's never a rush, or a sense that they're just trying to get as many people in and out as they can. They truly do take their time here. Keep in mind that this place is SMALL! There's four stations for each barber, and only three seats by the window for customers to wait. If you come after work, be prepared to wait, as it's first come first serve. I try to come right at the 5pm range, as it just beats the evening rush. Best of all, a man's haircut here is only $17! Used to be $15, but even at $17, it's an incredible bargain. That said, please oh please tip well! This team works hard and is very good at what they do - they deserve a great tip! I always get a great cut from these guys, but It took me a few cuts with different people there to find the person for my hair and preferences. Zoya and Eddie seem to work well for me. The great price allows me to tip a little extra since their prices are good, and they all work hard to get you in and out quickly. Since this is primarily a walk in place, I would not recommend going during rush/busy times if you want extra TLC. They do their best to reduce waiting time to a minimum, so if you go during rush hours, that means that you're going to be in and out pretty quickly.
