I love this place and I love the women that work here. My aunt has been bringing me to Madelaine's since I was 13 years old - I am now almost 30 and any time I am coming for a visit I make sure to book an appointment right after I book my flight. The reviewer that described Madelaine's as cold, eerie and uncomfortable clearly can not appreciate what a rare gem this place is. If you need all the bells and whistles of a posh overpriced spa, this is not the place for you. The sisters that own and operate this establishment have been doing so for decades. They have an established and loyal client base because those of us that love Madelaine's appreciate the quality of their work and could care less about the aesthetics of the establishment. All of the women working here are so kind and caring. Every time I come for a visit they greet me warmly like we're old friends. Despite the numerous clients they have, they remember the smallest details about you for years to come. No matter how hard I try, I can never get a facial anywhere else that is as good as the ones I get at Madelaine's. They use myofascial release techniques during the massage portion of the experience that can be a bit startling at first but it is definitely worth it. The products they use are all handmade and you can tell by the glow in your skin that they really know what they're doing. I could care less about what is in the products because my skin speaks volumes about the effectiveness of what they are using. I always purchase several of the items they stock for retail and incorporate them into my daily skincare routine. The entire experience is very relaxing and peaceful, so much so I often times fall asleep in the chair. Everyone is very gentle and mindful of you as they change out your masks while you're snoozing. After Marta used a fine-point needle to carefully extract a whitehead from my left cheek, she held it in front of my face so I could see. "Gross!" I said. "No, BEAUTIFUL," says Marta. And that's when she gained a customer for life. Divas, don't bother -- there's not a frill to be had here. I came here based on reviews here and absolutely love it. It's now my go to every 5-6 weeks. My skin has never looked so good. I now break out less and overall have a glow. First time i came, I had a lot of extractions, but now have WAY less. As many say, do not come here if you expect a luxury spa experience in terms of apperance. The place is clean and super welcoming, but you ARE in one room with about 8-10 super comfy chairs with other people getting their facials. I'm in two minds about reviewing this place, because on the one hand, I was really intrigued by the novelty of the experience, and on the other hand, I was awestruck by how sketchy everything was. The experience was so weird that I have to tell you everything that happened. The salon is on a hard-to-find third floor walk up on 72nd St. You enter, and you're led to a common room where you can change into a scrubs-like robe. Next was the first surprise I encountered. Facials are conducted in a large room with 8 La-Z-Boy chairs, with no dividers between the chairs whatsoever. In other words, there is zero privacy during the facial. Given that I was wearing nothing under my scrubs-like robe during my massage, I felt rather exposed and concerned about my privacy. Next was the massage. The facial/neck/shoulder/back massage was nice, but it was overwhelming how much of that goopy oil stuff was used. What's worse is that it wasn't even wiped off when my face was being steamed. Oh gosh, the steaming. With my face still greasy from massage cream, I had to get up and walk to a dingy little home-use facial steamer and set my face above it. Then I had to plod back to my La-Z-Boy and continue with the process. The next part was arguably the best part of it. A quick, relatively painless extraction process done just with fingers and tissue. The best part ended when a strong alcohol disinfectant was rubbed on my face, filling my nostrils with pungent alcoholic fumes. I then had three masks put on my skin. I don't understand their individual purposes, and I don't believe your skin type is taken into account whatsoever. They probably put everyone through the same process. My eyebrows were cleaned up during that process, so that was a nice perk. The final mask was cleaned off half-heartedly, and I still had white clay residue on my face. I also had sticky massage cream all over my neck and upper body. I guess that's what a "European" facial gets you. Tl;dr: Ask your mother to squeeze your pimples. She'll probably do a comparable job. read more

Dont go here if you expect fancy. Or privacy. Or quiet. this is like going to get your facial at your aunt ethel's (who is an esthetician) house. the kids are running around, grandma is listening to the tv in the kitchen and she yells at the kids occasionally, the phone is ringing, the teenagers interrupt your facial, the neighbor stopped by to gossip... not saying you won't get a decent facial but it is ... different. But the estheticians have been doing this their whole lives and are professionals. Trust them. They are absolutely lovely, gracious, caring women who know what they are doing. They show interest in you. Somehow they make you feel loved and cared for. Your skin will feel absolutely fabulous afterwards. They dont try to upsell you or sell you anything. Cost ? I forget. I think the 2 hour facial was $65 ? Closed on weekends. Cash or check only !!! old school. And pay attention to their non standard operating hours. PS: the facials are done in one communal room. You will lie in a Lazy Boy recliner. There will be other women getting facials in the same room. Just FYI so you won't be surprised. Old school to the max. PPS; Wear an old T shirt to go there. They use a generous amount of a (fabulous) heavy massage cream on your neck and shoulders and you dont want the remnants of that on your best silk blouse. I love this place. People that complain about the atmosphere don't "get it". My mother brought me here and has been coming here since before I was born. They recognize me and ask about my mother every time I come in. It's not like going to a fancy spa because that's not what it's meant to be. These women are pros but it's old school. All the masks they use are home made in shop. My face looks beautiful every time I leave. They're interested in keeping your skin beautiful, but not so much the frills. For a very reasonable price you get a facial that lasts hours. They massage your neck... it's bliss. I fall asleep in those lazy boys and in the summer you can hear opera wafting in the windows from the rehearsal studio across the street. Been going for 40 years. First went at age 7 with mom who was getting her eyelashes dyed. Love the ladies who work there so much. They are like family. No frills. They make their own magical beeswax that is painless and use tons of it, unlike skimpy joints all around town. Facials last forever since they massage your face and neck for a half hour and it includes lip and eyebrow waxing and hair bleaching (if you want). read more

Olga is meticulous with her pedicures. They use beeswax for waxing which I think hurts less and is not as drying. Yes it is a communal room for facials but that's part of the fun. I don't usually write a bad review for anything, but I was horrified by this so called "spa". I walked into the lobby and there were about 8 women sitting around in lab coats. The atmosphere was cold and unlike any spa I've ever been to. The decor was old and the space just had an eerie feeling. It didn't feel right and I should have just left right away. A woman took my coat and gave me a gown, asking me to undress from the waist up. She proceeded to bring me into a large room, steps from the entrance and lobby. This room was not private and had several other woman in lounge chairs getting facials. She had me lay down in a lazy boy chair that was covered in plastic and topped with white paper, like a doctors office. Then she pulled my gown down off my shoulders and off my chest, momentarily exposing my breast, and then covered my breast with a wash cloth. Very bizarre and a total lack of my privacy, as I was in plain sight of the entrance to the spa and all the other women in the room with me. She proceeded to put some massage lotion all over my back, chest and face, including my mouth. This "lotion" felt like greasy motor oil. It felt disgusting! As she massaged me, all the plastic and paper on my chair made an awful noise. I was so uncomfortable and freaked out that I asked her to stop and take the greasy lotion off my skin, as it was very irritating and just felt gross. She did take it off, with what smelled like alcohol and then put some green mask on me. When I asked what it was, she could not explain and had no idea what was in it, she just said it was good and no one ever complained about it before. All of the products they used were in white containers with no label or brand, so who knows what they were actually using. I ended up asking her to remove the mask as well and said I had to leave. To top it off she used cotton balls with COLD water to remove the mask. I could not get out of there fast enough! Hands down the worst experience I've ever had in a salon or spa. The only good thing about my experience is that they didn't make me pay for it because they knew how unhappy I was. And, I will say that the manager was very pleasant to me. I'm sure she didn't want a bad review. But I cannot let people experience what I did. read more

This old world salon is the the best facial in Nrw York City. They take approximately 2 hours to massage the face, neck & upper back, use several cleansing masks, steam and eliminate all debris/clogged pores/blackeads/whiteheads etc. you will feel and look 10 years younger when they are done. i have never written a review, but i feel i must warn you!!!! if you feel your face is your calling card stay a way from this place. my face is burnt so bad from my visit on 8/15/16 so for the last four days iv'e been in hiding nursing my face. iv'e been getting facials for the last twenty five years and the results have always been good because i have oily skin extractions are the most important to me. as judy was during the squeezing on my face i could feel her nails penetrating in my face when i brought it to her attention she said don't worry i"m fourty year aesthetician i know what i'm doing, don't worry (really) after she finished extacting she put a alcohol base mask on my face, she said this will burn. my face felt like it was on fire. she followed with two additional masks. the result is scabs all over my face that on peeling with discoloration. i have never had a facial in this type of setting. it look like a bath house the one face steamer must be as old as judy proclaims her experience to be. this is a nightmare for me don't make it yours too!!!!!!!!! read more

I can't believe I never knew about this place, having lived in the area for 20 years. My sister and I just got our lashes dyed, and the results were excellent. Pity on reviewers who decried the "old" atmosphere. Old World is what it is, and RARE to find such authenticity in NYC these days. The women working here exude maternal care and concern, and the price (a flat $27 per person, tip *declined* if you can believe it) is lower than the cheap salons I used to frequent down the street (such as Zen Nail, now closed). My 7-year-old niece was with us, and the ladies cooed and clucked over her, letting her sit in a recliner next to us while they did the procedure (~20 minutes). Neither my sister nor I felt any stinging, again unlike other salons I've used. The dye they used was more watery than I was used to, and it temporarily stained my upper lid (she put a cotton pad below my eye, fortunately). It washed away the next day, but I would recommend you have them swipe a little Vaseline on your upper lid and around the corners, especially if you are going somewhere afterwards. Enjoy! read more
