Upper West Spa is a good experience, the ease of booking is rivaled only by the kindness and expertise of its staff. It's an excellent place for nails, waxing and the occasional facial. I have my favorites, ofc, but the recent bad weather kept some staff from getting to work. My appointment was kept, I received superior work as always and a new regard for everyone who works there. After one of my favorite places changed management (and standards), I had been looking for a day spa-type of establishment. I am a frequent and loyal customer and therefore do not enter into these things randomly. Certainly, the quality must be there. One day, I needed to purchase several of my usual skin-care items. I did some research for my brands, and I decided to try Upper West Spa with the potential for a longer relationship also in mind. Their website was appealing-ish, and I wanted the opportunity to evaluate whether I would make this my wax, laser, what-have-you regular place. It might prove inappropriate for that, I reasoned, but how could they ruin a purchase experience ? I need the items anyway. I have nothing to lose. I was entirely mistaken. I arrived with two pre-paid VISA gift cards given me by my family - "pre-paid" means, just like cash (?). In what one might best identify as a kind of gobble-dy-gook, one of the individuals behind the register informed me that her "system" ONLY accommodated credit cards and that she would not accept pre-paid giftcards. Moreover, she said, the only other option was entering the cards manually "and well we just won't do that." The spa did not seem busy ... is it really too much trouble ... ? To build a relationship with a potentially regular customer ...? Now, at this point, I could have used my debit or credit cards. At it stood, I would have needed to pay around $100 beyond the gift cards anyway. But I was so annoyed by her demeanor - she obviously suspected something shady - that I was quite literally unable to imagine tossing any profits in their direction. I am also aware that businesses who exhibit extreme vigilance about being cheated are often cheating people themselves - suffice to say: No thanks. It was a very disappointing experience but also a learning one. I was not thrilled about the "feel" when I walked in, I thought the people in attendance were oddly watchful and unhelpful, but I gave them the full chance notwithstanding. Going forward, I will never consider Upper West Spa, not would I recommend them to anyone. And I don't need to. There are thousands of spas and shops in New York, and most of them carry my skin-care brands. read more

Marta was great for a facial, and Iwona for a massage. They do try to upsell Skinceuticals products and services (microdermabrasion, dermaplaning etc) which can cost $200+ more but are professional and not too pushy about it. Just wish they didn't do it when you're already in the room and relaxed because it can be a bit awkward. I also had a lot of mask residue in my hair / microdermabrasion sand in my ears ha after. I have been coming regularly to this location for a year. I go for the facials and have been for one massage. Everytime I am always pleased. I have tried numerous ladies all with their own techniques so I reccomend you try a few to find you really like. I have had Joanna, Caroline, and Helen for my facials. I have had Mandy for my massage. I am going to focus on the facial expierence since I do this more regularly for this review. There is a hall with rooms on the side, each set up with low light that calms you immeditly. For a facial you just need to rap the towel and undress the top part. Out of all the ladies my favorite is Joanna but I also enjoy Caroline. Caroline is great for extractions and guides youthe whole way through your experience. She did massage but was shorter than when with Joanna or Helen. Joanna is a well balanced expierence. Helen does great on the massage but I just have personally preferred Joanna and Caroline. I typically go and go the red out facial as I have rocsea and it really does wonders. I have been upsold to try the grreen tea and gold which are both lovely but the results just aren't as good for my redness so I will be sticking to red out. I do wish they had a loyalty program which would incentive me to come a bit more. In general though its a lovely place. read more

The waxing by Caroline is beyond excellent and deserves more than five stars. She is super competent and careful as well as gracious. The only problem at this spa is calling to make an appointment. There seems to only be one line, and it is very difficult to get through and make an appointment. The only solution to this that I can see is that the spa get a second line. Leaving a message is not satisfactory because the receptionist does not call back, so then you have to call again and not get through. Please correct this phone problem, and thank you. read more
