We we're visiting downtown La Grange with a couple who were visiting from New Jersey. Our husbands were busy elsewhere on Main Street, so we ladies thought we might drop in for a glass of wine. Madeleine's is not a wine tasting bar but a restaurant with an extensive wine list (for this small town, at least). They have a fairly extensive food menu as well as many unique wines on their list. They also serve beer, if that's your thing. One of the owners seated us and let us know that we could sample any of the wines with which we were unfamiliar before ordering a full glass. Although we had not planned to eat there as it was 3pm, our husbands popped in, so we ended up with an order of meatballs too. We absolutely loved them! They had a very bright flavor with a hint of some sort of spice in the sauce, which was amazing. We plan to come back for an actual dinner at some point soon as the food that we had was exceptional. The menu is extensive; the ambience is nice; and, the service was excellent. A bit of backstory for you -- the owners had moved from New York back to Kentucky after many years in the high-end restaurant business in New York City. This place is absolutely gorgeous! The decor is whimsical, yet classic. It's an old home set up to be a few different dining rooms. Even the bathrooms are adorable. Additionally, the back deck is perfect. Can't wait to go back and sit, sipping cocktails and nibbling snacks...when it isn't the temperature of hell outside. Service/staff was friendly and knew the menu well. Literally everything on the menu is recommended, and I don't think she was fibbing about it all being good. We had cocktails (blackberry bourbon ice tea and white sangria), apps (meatballs and mushroom dip), an amazing entree (baked cod over panzanella salad), and dessert (affogato with chocolate syrup). Without a doubt, this is one of the best meals I've had in a long time. This charming spot offers a spacious patio in the back, perfect for lively gatherings, and a cozy, intimate front patio great for people-watching. Inside you will find a warm and inviting atmosphere with nods to the charming Victorian architecture of Northern KY. My server, Katelynn, was incredibly sweet and attentive, taking time to walk me through the menu and highlight awesome daily specials they have throughout the week. The food...Chef, you are an all-star. The simplest details were nailed. For example, my po'boy had the perfect crispy bread exterior (thanks to Madeline's choosing Blue Dog Bakery bread--smart), but the warm sauce, a mojo rojo, leaked into the airy pollow dough at the center of the baguette and softened it slightly, soaking up all the delicious flavor. The sandwich was a perfect balance of spice from the sausage, tartness from the mayo, and the acidic-bitter contrast of the pickled red cabbage and fennel. I started with the mushroom dip. Again, Chef, it was absolutely wonderful. It had that comforting, creamy texture we all want in a dip but elevated with rich, fragrant mushroom goodness. Perfectly baked with breadcrumbs on top, adding that perfect crunch to dance with the texture of the dip and baguette. Then (I know, this is crazy, but I was genuinely over-excited) I tried the breakfast burrito with bacon. The potatoes had just the write texture, beautifully juxtaposed with the crunch of high-quality bacon--fatty and cripsy--perfectly cooked. The chipotle mayo on top added the a great smokiness and slight heat. Two of my dishes came with simple chopped romaine as a side salad. Looks totally unassuming, but the house-made parmesan dressing was so delicious. And I think this salad perfectly sums up the food here... sounds simple enough, yet wonderfully done. Totally approachable food prepared by someone who clearly knows flavor and has most likely traveled or at least been influenced by global flavors. Are you still reading? I know this is a lot--so go there immediately! But I am going to wrap this up: I also loved my cocktails. Their peach nectar bellini with cava as a wonderful balance of dry and sweet. The tequila, strawberry, jalapeno and cava cocktail was so refreshing with a little bite from the jalapenos. Both entirely my kind of drinks. I love this place and cannot wait to come back. In summary. Madeline's is great and we will be back. Be sure to go here. We went to celebrate MIL birthday. My wife and I had walked past when we were in LaGrange but had not had the opportunity to stop in. We did do a reservation. It's a small super nice quaint home so I recommend getting reservations. The menu is great. Not too big. They aren't trying to be everything to everybody. It's not just nibbles. The lunch and dinner options are great. Excellent portions that don't leave you stuffed or hungry. At our table we had Shrimp Scampi, Verde Pasta, and a meatball sandwich. Presentations were great. I had the Verde. First time I've had that dish. Super good. Hot. Tasty. Perfect. Everyone at the table said their meals were excellent. The owner was our server. She was super nice. There is a lovely deck out back and patio out front. We can't wait for the weather to be right to try that. Long story short. This place is well worth the visit. The service was extremely nice and attentive, the food was spectacular and the atmosphere is simply adorable! I opted for the Shrimp Scampi Pasta and it was extremely delicious. Our first time there, we had breakfast. You may think that's simple, but this chef knows how to cook "over medium" eggs, if you know what I mean! But to add housemade cherry-apple preserves to go with the delicately sliced and toasted french baguette bread and the most delectable potato wedges, sent us over the top! We returned a couple days later to have the meatball appetizer, the Salmon burger and the Pasta Primavera. The meatballs are seasoned, moist and not greasy in any way. (I will definitely return for the meatball sandwich!). The Salmon burger, thick and seasoned tastefully and all sandwiches come with romaine salad and wedges. The Cesar dressing is also house made and it's amazing! My pasta primavera had spaghetti noodles al dente to absorb the enormous amount of flavors of asparagus, peas, kale, tomato, and burrata, topped with real mozzarella chunk in a delicate sauce. I've never been one to have pâté, but let me tell you their Salmon pâté is scrumptious! Prices are not outrageous, but the quantity and especially quality is top notch and well worth every penny. The owner/manager and staff are exceptionally kind and personable. You can sit is the Victorian historic inside dinning areas or there are two roomy outdoor areas with sun or shade to your preference. Parking in the back is convenient and capable of spaces.
