From the moment we walked in just an amazing experience. We were part of a surprise party of 6 and the staff knew it. They created our birthday girl as a reservation for 2 instead of 6 and helped us surprise her at the table. The lighting is a bit dark but that helped the surprise. The manager brought out a sparkling wine and the chef sent out an amuse bouche. The pimento spread was so good we took a pint home for $20 (shhh secret). Our waitress Mo was professional a helpful with meal suggestions and separating some mushrooms for me. The shrimp appetizer is delicious and had 9 shrimp. The corn fitters come in 4 and Mo added 2. They were okay but I'd try something different in the future. The whole large kernels were odd in a light fritter. Our meals were fantastic. Everyone raved about bites of the filet and the chicken dish. The bolognese is a staple in the menu and was almost the perfect bite, perhaps a bit more meat in the sauce but the pasta was perfect. I had the wild boar and goat cheese polenta. The polenta didn't have a strong goatyness to it but was creamy, I ate it all. The boar was done to just short of falling off the bone. I used a piece of the grilled bread from my friends pasta to finish the meal. The wine list is short but complex. We had the Rioja red, so dry and smelled of old leather, but was a perfect wine to cut through the richness of the dishes. Our seat had a great view of the whiskey wall (almost every seat does) and it was a conversation piece the whole evening. Oh, forgot to mention the manhattan can be made into a black manhattan- outstanding. Best I've had in a restaurant. We are already making plans for our parties next birthday in July and will be asking for Mo. she was there at every turn throughout the meal. Pleasant and there to help at any point. The manager checked on us two times. WHP does fine dining so well. I haven't had such a wonderful evening for everyone in quite some time. We will be back and highly recommend. The menu itself is excellent and the descriptions and components of each dish sound perfect. The execution was way off! Literally everything was far too salty and we ordered things that should not be salty... diver scallops and black cod. These are delicate proteins that don't need much help. It was very dark with lovely ambient lighting, but older people might have a hard time with the lighting. The service was fantastic as well. I'll get more detailed below: They brought out some bread and beer cheese to start that was delicious! Tuna tartare - this was a modern take on an Asian dish tuna crispy rice. It was excellent, the quality of the tuna stood out and the crispy rice was delicious. You MUST eat it with the pepper, the pepper is pickled and spicy but it makes it so much butter. Just little bites of it. Mushroom Parfait - this was fun! It was really good, it mad basically a smooth blend to make it like a dip and had a few chucks of lions main. The bread was very good with it and do not skip on the "chips" it adds a lot of flavor. Brussels sprouts - this was honestly the best thing we ate it had a slight heat to it and had tons of flavor. They weren't very crispy but that didn't matter at all. Ribeye - this was so good, but not the best I've had. I think it was a touch dry but they had a lovely bernaise sauce that had a lot of flavor and was delicious. I loved the radishes on top, and the potatoes were really good as well. Pistachio cheese - just okay, didn't pop with flavor Honey comb- the drink was so good, I'm not a bourbon drinker and I actually really liked it and it wasn't too sweet! If you have folks visiting from out of state, Watch Hill Proper is a must-see to show off Kentucky bourbons! They have a catalog of over 2,000 unique bourbons from which you may choose and watch the bartender climb the old library style ladder to retrieve it! I'm sure there are many pictures of this online and I apologize for not adding to the multitudes because it really is impressive! I was with a large party and neglected to take pictures because I had such a great time! The food and drinks really deserve to be seen; I apologize for missing that opportunity to show them off. We had out-of-town family visiting and they really enjoyed the experience. The service was exceptional and the food even better. Our experience was all around wonderful and we will be back! The pricing there is on par with the finest restaurants in town and is well worth it. Our friends recently moved into Norton Commons and took us to Watch Hill Proper yesterday afternoon. We had a few cocktails and appetizers. I started with a Proper Old Fashioned and also had a Sazerac. Both were very good. My wife had the Smoke & Cider. She loved it. Great fall cocktail. Our friends had the Proper Manhattan. We enjoyed the homemade pimento cheese that was delivered to our table. For appetizers we had the Steak Tartare, a couple Lobster Hushpuppies and the Mussels in a white wine sauce, which was not on the menu but a special for the evening. One of our friends is gluten sensitive so they brought her some rice crackers so she could enjoy the appetizers with us. The bread that came out with the appetizers was great. The service was fantastic. The place is very nice and the bourbon selection is outstanding, and overwhelming. Over 2,400 bottles...insane!! Very nice place and great for a date night with friends. When you pull into the neighborhood, you notice this is going to be something special. We made reservations for a large group of guys doing the bourbon trail and this place did not disappoint. Great service, followed by equally as amazing food. We ordered a bunch of food, but I had the steak tartare as an app for the table, which was great and I ordered Iberico Secreto. The preparation and presentation was awesome. Of course, you probably also come here for bourbon, which was unlike anything I have seen. Compared a 2024' GTS to Calumet 18 year, the Calumet was a clear winner. Lastly, we shared a desert comprised of the cheesecake and this wicked peanut butter and chocolate creme brulee of sorts. I made a reservation on Open Table and they do charge a $64 deposit (it was just me eating alone). Service was really good but it took a long time for the main entree came to come out. The appetizer came out really fast but then I waited 23 minutes for the entree. There was nothing to munch on or anything. Amuse bouche - small piece of bread with cheese spread. A bit salty and strong for an amuse bouche but I appreciate the presentation and bite of food. Torched king salmon - delicious. Fish is tender and was medium cooked because of the torching. Portion is small for the price. Duck breast - the duck was cooked perfectly and it was absolutely delicious. It paired well with the sweet syrup sauce and glaze and the prune jam. I did not like the goat cheese grits though. Oatmeal cookie ice cream This was good but it didn't have a big oatmeal cookie presence. It was more like oatmeal flavored vanilla ice cream. I would have rated 4 stars if it wasn't for the long wait between the appetizer and entree. The food is promising though. read more

They have pages and pages of bourbon. We had a couple cocktails and enjoyed watching them go up the ladder to get specific orders taken care of. Wow, after numerous times coming to WHP following spring performances of Shakespeare at Luther Luckett Correctional Center in Lagrange, which always end after 9 pm, and after making arrangements weeks in advance this year for a late table (explaining that we could not arrive before 9:30, and being assured that we could still be served), when our group of six arrived last night, we were told the kitchen was closing, and were rushed unceremoniously by an extremely rude server to get our orders in. Both the hostess and the evening manager were apologetic and reassuring ("We'll take care of you!") but the SERVER was shockingly discourteous. I am deeply disappointed to have made advance arrangements for an evening hosting my friends, and to spend $800, only to be back-handed by a server who somehow thought that he outranked both the hostess and the maitre d'. I hope that I can somehow continue to bring guests to dinner at WHP following Shakespeare Behind Bars productions, as well as for other events, as it's an exceptional dining experience -- but somehow communications need to improve. If I were WHP, I would replace the server we had last night with someone trained in diplomacy. read more

If I had to imagine the perfect Bourbon bar, it would be Watch Hill Proper. Leather chairs? Check. Barrel interior decor? Check. Bourbon selection? Check. Almost 1,800 unique bottles! At the same time almost $350 pours under $10, and only 73 bottles over $100 a pour. Unlike some "museums", Watch Hill Proper is trying to make American whiskey accessible to the people! This made "Proper" a must-stop on a recent Bourbon Trail trip. I was able to walk in and get a seat without a reservation on a Friday night. I was prepared to wait if needed- and it looks like I would have been fine to wait with the nice lobby bar right at the entrance. I was really impressed with the ambiance and the decor. Besides the famed wall of whiskey, I noticed glass cases showing their "unicorns" and other rare items in their collection. There were also bottle lockers- I had to ask about those. It's a perk for members who want to keep their own bottles there and drink from them. I love that idea! Note: You don't have to be a member to go! They do offer special memberships full of perks like the use of their spaces, discounts, and experiences. I wish I lived in Louisville, I would probably be signing up for a membership immediately. Even though I studied their Bourbon menu online before I went, I still took a good 15 minutes to game-plan my time there. With their wide selection I got the chance to try a lot of bottles I heard about but haven't had the pleasure of trying. Pro Tip: Do the half-pours, it will allow you to try more within your budget! The service was great, at the end I asked them for a recommendation of an under $10 pour to cap off the night and they came back with a 10-Year Henry McKenna Bottled-in-Bond. My moms pork shoulder was tough to chew but she said the flavor was really good. I had the duck breast which tasted phenomenal just thought for the price you should get more than 2 slices.
