My family and I went to Madison's on a Saturday afternoon and had a quiet but very enjoyable lunch outing! We drove to Beaufort from Charleston to dine at a different restaurant. When we got there, we found out it had gone out of business. We did a quick search and decided to try this whole we were in the area. Madison's was not planned. Let me start by saying that this place had great service. However, it's important to note that there were only a couple tables occupied while we were there. The waitress was friendly, made recommendations, checked on us regularly, and our glasses were almost always full. The atmosphere was very nice. The restaurant was clean and decorated nicely. The food was OK. I don't think there was anything that was terrible or memorable. The flavors were pretty good. I do think the fried items should have been fried a longer though. And I did notice the food came to the table Luke warm. The portions were rather small, but the prices were adjusted. With drinks, appetizes, main course, and 1 desert, the bill was about $125 for 3 of us. I didn't ask anyone else, but I still left hungry (I think they were too polite to admit it). There is one thing I want to point out. All 3 of us got the large size (BOWL) of She Crab soup. It came in a cup so small, I don't think they could have served a smaller size (CUP). I highly suspect the CUP and the BOWL are the same size. There's no way it could have been smaller! Would I return? Maybe, but I'd probably try another place first. read more

Hard to find this quaint place tucked away under the trees in Port Royal, but worth it! My daughter & I visited for lunch and sat on the screened patio, which was perfect. I wanted to try several things (they do have togo boxes!), so we ordered the shrimp 'n grits - which were very flavorful and served hot. They weren't stingy with the shrimp and the grits were great. Our server suggested a dish with fried crabcakes which I had never had, so I had to try it - every bite was delish! I've attached a picture but don't remember the name of the dish. Yum! The seafood basket with flounder was good, fries could have been hotter, but overhaul very tasty. The couple at the next table ordered the chocolate mousse cake, so we followed in suit and found it moist & yummy! Parking is a huge issue...it's like the wild west out here, parking everywhere in beaufort and port Royal is a nightmare. The service was passable but not super. We only seen our server 3-4 times, but she was very friendly. We liked her a lot. She was super busy. Food was pretty fantastic. I had the softshell crab and cheesey grits. We received recommendations for this restaurant from several people, and we finally got to try it the last time we were in the area. It did not disappoint. The one recommendation I would have is for the seafood tower - using rock salt to put the oysters and mussels on vs. ice would prevent melting ice from diluting the flavor of the oyster liqueur and help avoid solidifying the butter in the mussels. Our normal Port Royal eatery is Fishcamp on 11th Street. Decided to try Madison's because of menu selection and rating. Even though it was lunch time, the chef agreed to prepare a sea scallop plate for me; while my wife had the bay scallop basket. Our server Rosie (employed at Madison's for only a month) was terrific. When Rosie delivered my plate she said the chef wanted to know how I would like my scallops prepared. she responded it's his first time here. He didn't disappoint. Wow, my twin and I stopped in for a bite to eat and we were shocked at the amazing choices for dinner and at such a great price! The chefs special changes so its a new dish to enjoy even for a second venture to eat again! The service was friendly and so patient as we tried to discover what wed like to eat, my votes on the ribeye or the shrimp and grits! the portions are of a great size and the establishment is clean and very comfortable to enjoy. Our first time at Madison's restaurant this past week was a wonderful experience! Will not be our last! The food was very Delicious! The staff were so friendly and helpful in recommending menu items. I started my dinner with the Potato and Leek soup, I had one of the Specials which was Swordfish, topped with a yummy lemon sauce! Delicious! I loved the Ben Franklin fireplace in the dining area where we were seated. It was perfect for taking the chill off with the rainy evening outside. We try new places every year we go to Fripp Island. We ran into a family who told us about Madison's. We decided to try it out after their recommendation. So happy we did! The staff was more than friendly when we arrived, our waiter Kaleb was great! Great attention to detail and gave us a history of the building. Almost importantly was the food, we had a few apps which were all great, I had the stuffed flounder which was the best I have had down here. My wife had the Mahi Mahi which was also amazing. Before Covid struck we had been to Madison's many times and so enjoyed both the food and the service. This past week we ventured out for dinner, the first time in 52 weeks, and I am sorry to say we were so disappointed with the food. The service was spot on but the shrimp and grits were awful. Grits appeared to be old and were not creamy and delicious as in the past. A few shrimp were sandy and what I thought was a mushroom was actually a chewy piece of undesirable fat. This is our favorite restaurant in Port Royal! We eat here no less than 2 times a week. Fabulous kids menu, tons of gluten-free options, wonderful menu. My personal favorite for lunch is the Spinach Salad with blackened Mahi-mahi. We also love the She Crab soup, Shrimp Salad and Shrimp & Grits are also delicious. a And definitely try the Creme Brulee for dessert. We were told the chef is new and he's fabulous. From the mixed reviews we weren't expecting much. A full on dinner wasn't our focus when we visited, more like bar food nibbles. The small bar however was packed on an early Wednesday evening so we opted for a table on the screened porch. I liked the menu. Not super creative but just enough to separate this restaurant from the many others that have near identical menus. The server was pleasant and engaging. We were delighted to hear they had three specials that evening (take note other Beaufort restaurants), an appetizer of crab stuffed mushrooms and two fish entrees, a glazed Mahi Mahi and black drum. The preparations sounded intriguing, but again, I was looking for a lighter bite. Nevertheless, I was impressed. I opted for the house side salad with vinaigrette and a side of fried calamari. The plan was to share the squid with my table mate and use the rest to place on my greens. My partner ordered the burger with fries. When the plate of salad arrived, I was genuinely surprised. This was not a thrown together dish but a lovely composed one with multi colored grape tomatoes, crunchy cucumbers, sprouts, garlic croutons, all accompanied by super fresh greens. The calamari was the best I have had since moving from New England. The rings and tentacles were perfectly tender, the coating crisp and the flavor rich with the sea. These were made with care in the kitchen, and you could tell. It was so obvious that these morsels never saw the inside of a freezer bag. Thank you Madison's for taking the time to do it right. The burger was equally well received. The brisket and short rib patty was beefy, juicy and perfectly proportioned to the other components including the bun. The house hand cut fries were probably the best we have had in this area. Having this kind of experience, just made us eager to return in full dinner mode so we can seriously sample the rest of the menu. read more

To start off we were given a new waitress. I feel she should of gotten more guidance from the other workers. Had to ask for refills 30 mins after she finally came back. Throats stayed dried and for someone your going to put outside. Drinks should be priority for the customer, especially with children during summer season. Let's talk about these grilled cheese. All (3) of my children grill cheese was burnt. I doubt that's how they usually serve their grill cheese but how can someone be like YUP! Let's serve this burnt food to children especially when it specify 12 & under only (NO EXCEPTIONS). Service was terrible. Throats we're dried out. I have been debating whether to rate my experience for a couple weeks. My wife and I came here when Madisons first opened and we were not happy, but we decided to give this place another try 0n Feb 17. My wife ordered shrimp and grits which she said was good. I ordered the pick 2 platter and got fried shrimp and scallops. My 6 shrimp were medium in size, and what I thought were ocean scallops were in fact 7 little Bay scallops the size of a small grape each. Even worse everything tasted like they were baked in an oven, and not fried. I had 3 hushpuppies the size of a green grape, they were good but small. The French fries were actually good and were definitely fried. For a total bill of 85 plus dollars with tip, I would have enjoyed some frozen shrimp from a box more than this meal.
