The food was excellent, for the most part. The oysters were fresh and so was the whiting, but it wasn't seasoned very well. The gumbo plate is gumbo, but more soupy than traditional, thicker based gumbo. It's served on a plate with rice. Delicious! It's served with Andouille sausage, grilled shrimp and chunks of ham. The fried okra was enough to feed four people, and it was also good -- the way fried okra should be made - crispy, not greasy, lightly breaded. This okra was seasoned with a dusting of grated Parmesan, I think, different, but tasty. Chef B's provides a mustard-based buffalo, ranch sauce for dipping. We didn't need it. The deviled egg rolls were plentiful. These could have been a meal instead of an appetizer - three egg rolls, halved; oxtail, deviled crab and chicken. The soy-based sauce was sweet and salty and a great accompaniment for the egg rolls. Our cocktails came with way too much ice, but we both enjoyed our drinks, after removing the mountain of ice cubes from mine, I probably had less than half a glass of my cocktail. The highlights were the candied yams with a bourbon sauce. So good! The best thing I tasted was the banana pudding cake. I was a little apprehensive, at first, because we had so much food and I didn't want a heavy cake. Trust me and save room for this. The cake is served in a stemmed goblet and had the most moist and fluffy cake mixed in with Nila wafers and creamy pudding. Divine! The best banana pudding I ever had. The service was a little uneven. We had to wait a while for plates, sauces, to-go boxes, etc. A couple of times, we got up and went over to our server, who wasn't checking on us. The food came out hot and quickly. The service wasn't bad, just slow, on the items we needed to accompany our meals, like spoons. Stopped in for a late lunch. I love the setup. It's part of a relaxing complex with chairs, fit pit & korn hole as well as a bakery and Gullah history center. I'd like to revisit for dinner. My wife had the fried chicken sandwich and it was fried a little too HARD. Sister in law had the Cajun shrimp Alfredo - she felt it needed more ump. We had planned an amazing weekend getaway, and while driving around we spotted a trailer advertising crabs. Of course, we made a quick U-turn thinking we had stumbled onto the perfect dinner spot. As soon as we pulled into the yard, the atmosphere immediately caught our attention. It felt like one big family gathering--a warm, loving community where everyone knew each other. The homes with their large wraparound porches gave me serious Tyler Perry movie vibes, like the kind of place where everyone gathers on the porch to laugh, eat, and soak up wisdom from the elders. We decided on Chef B's for dinner. Although reservations are required on Fridays and Saturdays, they were kind enough to seat us after about a 15-minute wait. As we looked around, there were still several empty tables, so we appreciated them accommodating us. We were greeted by a beautiful young chocolate hostess whose melanin was absolutely glowing. She was friendly, answered our questions about the menu, and made us feel welcome. We started with the fried okra, which was served with a béarnaise sauce. We also requested a side of ranch. Unfortunately, the appetizer was just okay. Neither the béarnaise nor the ranch complemented the okra, and both sauces missed the mark. For cocktails, we ordered the signature Rum Punch and the Juneteenth drink. Both were enjoyable, but I was confused by the Rum Punch. It was completely clear, even though the menu listed it as being made with dark rum. For our entrées, we ordered the Crab Fries, Shrimp & Grits, and Fried Oysters. The Crab Fries were described as blue crab, snow crab meat, garlic, Boursin cheese, and smoked cheddar. Unfortunately, the topping looked more like burnt cheese crumbs or scraps than a rich, cheesy crab topping. It wasn't visually appealing and didn't deliver the flavor we expected. The Shrimp & Grits were the biggest disappointment of the night. The shrimp themselves were fine, but the grits were incredibly thin and watery, with little to no seasoning. They lacked the rich, creamy texture and flavor that make shrimp and grits such a Southern favorite. The Fried Oysters also fell flat. They were under-seasoned, and the accompanying coleslaw was simply not enjoyable. Overall, the atmosphere was the highlight of our visit. The setting felt welcoming, authentic, and full of community, and the staff was pleasant. Unfortunately, the food didn't live up to the charm of the location. Sunday 10/12 - Love the atmosphere. Ma Daisy's Porch is a beautiful location with lots of outdoor seating. Chef B's has a lounge like setting with beautiful decor. The music in the back ground gives elevated Juke joint. They have gorgeous painting for sale (we say by a beauty on the second floor that was $500) I ordered "fush and grits" (fish and grits) and my first issue, though this may be silly to some, was that the waiter made a point to say right after me, "fish and grits." Not sure why he couldn't go with the theme of the restaurant he works for's menu. It's "fush." My food was plentiful. The whiting was cooked nicely but could have used more seasoning. The shrimp butter that goes over the top had flavor in spades so maybe they were trying to balance it out. The creamy grits were good. Not too thin and not too thick. My guy ordered a sweet potato pancake, eggs, and grits. The server (not the waiter) brought out our meals and what came out was a regular waffle. Not even sweet potato. When we asked about this, which took awhile because our waiter did not come back for some time even when he was with a nearby table, he let us know they don't serve pancakes. Now I KNOW my guy ordered a pancake so it should have been mentioned directly then. Additionally, the waffle that came out was still wrong - not sweet potato. The waiter seemed more in the range of neutral to annoyed than happy to fix the issue. There was no apology at all until he brought the sweet potato waffle to the table. My guy said the waffle felt doughy, as if it could have stood a bit longer on the griddle. When it was time to pay he didn't bring a receipt, just showed me the order on his device which I didn't love. I paid, however, and hit print receipt. He had to go get the receipt so now I wonder if it was just that his machine was out of paper and he didn't feel like getting more from downstairs? So excited to finally try and I arrived for breakfast on a Sunday. I ordered fish and grits with egg whites and enjoyed the great music and art. They have upstairs, downstairs and porch dining. The food was cooked perfectly and I returned for dinner on the porch which was a little disappointing as they had run out of some menu items so I ended up just getting wings and crab soup. The wings were great but the soup looked off and a few servers noticed it and apologized and took it back. I returned a few days later for lunch on the porch and it was the best of all with fried chicken, mashed potatoes and green beans, cornbread with sweet potato butter and it was delicious.....but be aware that being on the porch can be an issue as I had to end up inside when the bee's wouldn't go away. read more

I'd give 5 stars for the oxtail and red rice, and the shrimp and grits. We couldn't finish the bourbon pecan sweet potatoes, so we took them home and had them over vanilla ice cream another day. Y'all should put that on the menu. Damn. Still 5 stars for the ambiance--all the reviews that talk about how pretty the place in are correct-- beautiful decor, well chosen fabrics on the upholstery, and a lovely mural downstairs, and the bathroom wallpaper is great! I'd give 4 stars for the friendly but disorganized service; it took quite a while for the food to come out, then more time for silverware to come out, and it was hard to catch people's attention. When you did, though, they were lovely. The three stars is for the oysters. They were poorly shucked, and full of shell bits; it felt a little dangerous for the inside of the mouth. They were fresh, and probably would have been tasty, but the grit and shell flakes made them inedible. We each tried one, then tried another to see if they were done better, but nope. The weirdest part was that instead of taking the oysters off our bill, they only discounted them, which felt like a bad management choice. Either way, I'd recommend the place, but not the oysters, and I'd hesitate to go back, even though I'm going to be dreaming about that oxtail and red rice for a long time. read more

Service was slow and server was a nice young kid, but pressed into service because regular servers were not in for the day. Bar service was bad. I ordered a drink with dark rum and cognac and when it arrived, it was crystal clear like water. Only one table of guests in restaurant when we arrived. Opted to sit upstairs. No other guests showed up entire time we were there. Our server was great and the food was fantastic (chicken, fish, shrimp, greens, Mac and cheese) but didn't come out at one time but we did get apologies from kitchen. The decor was beautiful but windows all had dead flower arrangements. One of the workers downstairs started goofing around with a friend and were screaming thru the end of our meal (they didn't realize we were upstairs). The restaurant grounds are amazing. There's a bakery, historically building, the restaurant and plenty of outside activities to do. Parking was a sort of an adventure. It's a gravel parking lot that was uneven in many places. We were greeted warmly when we arrived. We had a short wait (15 minutes) before we were escorted upstairs to our table. There's no elevator so this may be an issue for those who don't walk well. Our waitress was kind and friendly. Our food was ok. Staff, while nice, seemed lsot at times (took our food to the wrong table, never brought me my drink). I had oxtails and grits. It was good, I'd likely order it again if I returned. We had two main issues. My daughter's meal came about 5 minutes after everyone else's. This isn't a long time on theory but when you're sitting at a table of 6 and there's 5 meals and one missing it seems like an eternity. Second, it took 3 times to make an acceptable waffles for my mother. The first 2 were much too soft and almost soggy. They got it right in the third try but at this time everyone else has just about finished eating. All in all the experience was just so/so. We were vacationing on Hilton Head Island and made a special trip to visit this restaurant, I'm not sure I'd make a special trip again. read more

My family and I stopped in for breakfast/brunch on Saturday. The ambiance is beautiful however it's not very toddler friendly. No high chairs and the tables are small so 3 drinks and tablet pretty much ate a lot of room on the table. My husband and I ordered chicken and waffles. It took a while for the food to come out and it was a very thin waffle and the chicken looked like it could have been cooked a little more. My son also had a kids chicken tenders and waffle 2 small thin pieces of waffle and thick and tuff chicken tenders. As we were eating they were getting a small food delivery looked like grocery store chicken in black bags coming through the front door to the back kitchen. I wasn't very impressed with the food but I hope it gets better because the place is absolutely beautiful. read more

If you're looking for a restaurant that feeds your soul as much as your stomach, this is it! The decor is beautiful--warm, vibrant, and full of Gullah cultural pride. That mural downstairs and all of the artwork is amazingly gorgeous. The staff is incredibly welcoming. The live music is beautiful and makes for a good time. The food? Unreal. Chicken and waffles were fluffy and the chicken perfectly seasoned; the fried flounder was crispy and flavorful; and the rice perlo, candied yams, macaroni and cheese, and green beans tasted like they came straight from grandma's kitchen. Ma Daisy is proud I'm sure. Don't skip the sweet carrot cake--trust me. More than a meal, it's a cultural experience. Can't wait to come back! My wife ordered a pineapple teriyaki bowl and 40 minutes after we ordered it, we were told they did not have any pineapple so they would serve it hibachi style which meant it was just rice and chicken (which was an extra cost) on a plate. The waffles and chicken were good but it was chicken wings vs something you could cut up and eat with the waffle so a little odd. Didn't have the beer I ordered (small selection so no excuse) and the sangria was not good at all. Beautiful restaurant that is going to struggle if they cant get their act together. read more

Food and ambience was excellent. The service could use a bit of development. We came at lunchtime and it was not super crowded yet it seemed our waitress may have been waiting on a majority of the tables while others were just setting tables. Our waitress could have used help. She took our drink order and didn't come back with enough drinks (water). She did have one person come and bring us plates and silverware AFTER we had been served appetizers, yet there still was not enough. We weŕe a party of 9. We constantly had to find her to refill or get something else. A couple of times we had to ask another waitstaff for something. At one point 3 staffers were standing together on their phones, yet our waitress was nowhere to be found. The wait for the food was a bit long but well worth it. I recommend: The lamb chops, oxtail, shrimp and grits pork chops, Fried okra and there were some biscuits with honey butter or pimento cheese. All excellent choices! read more
