Now for dinner- I had the zucchini bread for an appetizer. My son's girlfriend said it tasted strange. I agreed with her, and only had two bites. For the main course, I ate chicken and basil soup. I had only three unflavored spoonfuls. My husband had fish, in a unflattering tomato sauce. The turkey sandwich was excellent. I had a bite of my sons's sandwich. We have tried many places in West Chester, but have never been out to brunch. Mae's was adorable- modern farmhouse decor, varied choices for breakfast or lunch fans and good prices. We had the French toast, DM fried chicken sandwich, pressed Cuban and the burger. The sandwiches were delicious and very flavorful on a homemade brioche bun. Cute place in the heart of West Chester! I was here for brunch with a friend for the first time and loved their unique menu options especially for breakfast and lunch. I decided to go with a small meal since I was not too hungry and really enjoyed the avocado toast. Although it was nothing amazing and I probably could have made it at home. Hubby and I had no kids and were looking for a nice breakfast place to try. We went to Mae's West Chester. The day was wonderful and we were excited to try a new place. We were seated outside and loved the people watching as the street was closed. After ordering and 45 minutes later, we still didn't have our breakfast, the waitress hadn't checked in on us, we were getting ready to leave when the waitress came to apologize that she never put our order in. Meanwhile had she checked on us we would have resolved this quicker. She then put our order in but didn't notice that we had no water left and needed a refill, and we had to go ask for that, too. Once our food came, we had ordered an iced tea and we asked for it and were told they didn't have any. The waitress did offer special lemonade. All in all really poor experience! They did comp the meal. The manager didn't come to speak to us about the issue, either. Food was excellent, when we finally got it! read more

Mae's is a wonderful addition to West Chester. Farm to table at a reasonable price, without sacrificing flavor or a nice dining experience. We had the gnocchi with claims and chorizo for an app, and Cubans for dinner. The app was amazing and I could have just eaten that and been happy. The gnocchi were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The Cuban was delicious and hit the spot on a rainy evening. I appreciated the side of homemade ranch that I had requested. My wife and I came here on a whim for Sunday brunch. Our experience at Mae's exceeded all expectations. Our server, Veronica, was fun, attentive, and super helpful with our questions. We started with iced coffee and an iced chai and...wow. It was, without a doubt, the best iced chai I've ever had, and it was no surprise that the chef makes it from scratch every day. Now on to the food! We split the heirloom tomato, corn, and arugula salad. It was like summer on a plate. All the creamy goodness you expect from Mexican style street corn, plus some lovely acid from the tomato and bite from the arugula. Fantastic. For mains, my wife had the chorizo, Swiss, and scallion pancake with fermented garlic honey, and I had Mae's fried egg sandwich with bacon jam, spinach, and sriracha mayo. I had to steal a bite of the pancake, and it was so ridiculously good I just started laughing. The egg sandwich was perfectly balanced, and the egg was just the right level of runny. What a cute little new addition to the West Chester borough! I stopped by here on a weekday for lunch because the sign was so cute and inviting and there was a good amount of outdoor seating. We ordered the salmon and burger. My burger was honestly one of the best ones I've ever had. There was something marinated or pickled-tasting in the burger that was so flavorful and added a good texture. The homemade chips were also delicious. Let me tell you how amazing these people, their food, and their space are. We had our rehearsal dinner venue cancel on us last minute because of the flooding in Downingtown, and after hours and hours of calling around, Maes agreed to accommodate our 48 person dinner party. Throughout the entire process, they were friendly, accommodating, efficient and thorough. They made sure we had everything we needed to host a successful event. The food was PHENOMENAL. Every bite we put in our mouths was absolutely delicious and perfectly cooked. Their waitstaff (two college girls) were two of the best waitresses we've had in a really long time. They were great at their jobs and made sure we had everything we needed. The space was well-decorated and had a farmhouse vibe which was exactly what we were looking for! I ordered a cup of the Gazpacho and the Buttermilk Fried Chicken Sandwich for my dinner. I was pretty disappointed after seeing all these great reviews and testimonials. The servers were really sweet and nice but the woman (I assume the owner) who was walking around was cold and not nice. I think she meant to be friendly when she checked in with our table but it was awkward and off putting. The food was not great. I had the fried chicken sandwich and it was simply not good. The color was off and the chicken was tough and consisted of different textures. My mom had pancakes which are difficult to mess up and they were not fluffy and not flavorful. I feel bad writing a bad review for a new small business but I spoke with my neighbors and they also had a negative experience. Hopefully Mae's takes this as constructive criticism because I would love to see them improve! read more

Mae's is a great place to stop by for a good brunch, especially if you like eating outdoors, as they have a number of tables set up on Gay St. and have even more tables when the street is closed over the summer. We enjoyed two short stacks of banana pancakes (they aren't on the menu technically but they were kind enough to make the pancakes with bananas in them just for us). The pancakes featured three small pancakes that were clearly homemade and not from a mix and were covered with powdered sugar and served with whipped butter and maple syrup. We really liked them a lot and we would gladly eat them again. Mae's must use buckwheat based flour because we tasted this in the pancakes, so this can either be a good or bad thing depending on if you prefer pancakes that are more buckwheat versus more buttermilk based ones. I had perfectly cooked thick sliced bacon with mine and my wife enjoyed the Yukon breakfast potatoes. She said they were some of the best potatoes she ever had and she was right. They had some onions in them and they were perfectly cooked and served with a side of ketchup. She had coffee with her breakfast that was slightly acidic but was freshly brewed. Our server, Ariana, was super friendly and helpful and we will happily return here for breakfast every time our buttermilk based pancake place in town (no names mentioned, haha) is on vacation. read more

Very good! We stopped in for a late lunch and chose to eat on the street. The menu appealed more than other options on Gay St even if the outdoor ambience isn't quite as nice. Service was wonderful as they more than adequately addressed our gluten-free customization. The Burrata and prosciutto appetizer was particularly good, although prob not great value at $15. For entrees we ordered the salmon and braised short ribs. The salmon was good while the short rib with creamed corn was spectacular. I can almost still taste it now. It looks like the menu changes periodically so it's worth a look and we will no doubt try again as different exciting options are offered. Their breakfast sandwich with the bacon jam is a special recipe that I feel lucky to have experienced. Dang, that thing is good!! I made it my own by doing a bacon egg and cheese with bacon jam. The home fries are a mix of fried quartered mini potatoes that are a mix of crispy fries and the actual cooked potato. We had the perfect late afternoon lunch here while sitting in the lovely and comfortable outdoor seating in the autumn sun. The service was joyful and our two appetizers were delicious! I ordered a complex dish that can go wrong in so many ways, but each element was perfect. Sweet steamed clams, deliciously spiced pieces of sausage, fluffy gnocchi, and lightly toasted cheese enhanced bread to dip in the buttery sauce cradling the other ingredients. Fresh oj, coffee, egg breakfast platter (now being served at lunch), shrimp salad (very tiny shrimp). juice was "store fresh"... not fresh squeezed... and starting to turn. Cheese was mediocre... with a creative addition of pickled vegetable. strange. The eggs were overcooked. The home fries were very good... they left the peel on.. and it made a difference. By the way, the bench seating along the walls is extremely uncomfortable... unless you like sitting ramrod straight on a hard wooden bench.
