Understaffed tonight, so it took a while for someone to come to the table. She wasn't particularly friendly. Not rude, but not particularly welcoming either. I ordered cheese enchiladas, bc I figured those are hard to mess up and being this close to the border, ought to be pretty good. Unfortunately, they were very bland. Red sauce could've really used some chili powder and cumin. The boys all had burgers and said they were good. To checkout, you need to catch someone at the counter. Went here for breakfast based on the number of yelp stars this place had. It was ok. The portions were big enough. The service could have been better. I had to ask for lemons for my tea 3 times before I actually got them. Then the waitress specifically asked me if I wanted to add cheese to my taco and I said no. So my taco came with cheese. Maybe the waitress was just telling me I was getting cheese on my taco. The sausage & egg taco would have been better without the cheese. Had a simple breakfast this morning. Biscuits n gravy, eggs over medium and a side of bacon. Coffee was delicious and hot but that's all that was. Biscuits were small, flat and barely warm ( think room temp). Gravy was also luke warm. Bacon was obviously made earlier and cold with grease thickening on two slices. Ever eat cold bacon??? Very friendly staff! We were a bit confused by the hours, but made it in at 8am on our last day in town. Coffee was hot and fresh and the staff was very welcoming. I had two breakfast tacos and they were massive! We also ordered the magoorrito, but it didn't come wrapped so that threw us off. We had a few disconnects with the order (asked for cheese on the tacos and both didn't have any and the bacon/egg taco came with no bacon). Overall a decent place to start the day! read more

Well we got there at 8:30pm of course on Yelp it said closes at 10pm and they still had the open sign on, so we opened door and some woman at counter gave me a look like umm WTH... She then yelled uhhh they are already closed! As there was a man behind counter and he said nothing, I said oh ok no problem and she continued to say we're closed! Well How RUDE! Our first visit to Alpine & Marfa, Which all other places we visited were a lot more friendlier then that! I would suggest No One visit this restaurant! The servers were really nice and the food came out fast. It was really tasty and they had a decent amount of choices on the menu. They are somewhat limited in what they offer, but they make what they have really well. It's bathrooms and restaurant were clean. It's 12:30 on a Sunday. Pulled in to the parking lot in the rain with a group of about 6 people sitting on the porch. There was a sign that said "We open at 8am." NO. Definitely go anywhere else. Fast food would be better. I had the huevos rancheros and I don't know what other reviewers are talking about because it was disgusting. It was a plate of refried beans with 1 layer of corn tortilla and "ranchero" sauce with eggs and cheese (so it was mostly beans). I don't mind beans in general, but it was all incredibly bland. The ranchero sauce was flavorless and watery (and oddly tasted just like the red salsa that came with my husbands order). Other reviewers said the salsa was good, but I found it was absolutely terrible. Forget spicy, it had no flavor whatsoever. Yelp, how could you lead me so far astray?! I had an early in-service and I was providing breakfast and needed to place an order, however they did not open in time for me to place an order but Mr Magoo made it in early just to take care of my order. Ordered the rancheros huevos and 3 egg cheese & all meat omelet. The rancheros is the next we've eaten. A couple four tortillas were on the dish, topped with beans, cheese, jalapeños and two fried eggs topped it off. We were given extra flour tortillas. Yummy!! The omelet was jam packed with ham, sausage, bacon! It also had fresh jalapeños, tomatoes and onions in it. A small container of salsa verde came with the omelet and was quite tasty. Not hot for my tastes but it had a bit of a hotness to it. My meal came with grilled potatoes and toast. I told them to hold the potatoes. The other dishes we saw come out looked great! The pancake were thick and looked so good; the biscuit meals looked great also. A must stop and eat at place if you're passing through Alpine! read more

Came for lunch on a Monday. Not impressed. The burger was great, but the French fries were under cooked even though they appeared over cooked. Dirty oil....I assume. If it had been a snake it would have bit me! For years we have driven through the beautiful towns of Alpine and Marfa on our trips to Mexico, and usually we would stop the the foot of Sul Ross University at the McDonalds. We decided to finally break the chains of the golden arches and try a real local spot. It was just across the street. The first thing I noticed was that this was a spot for locals, no half combed haired travelers in shorts and wrinkled t-shirts, except for ourselves. The lady behind the counter knew everyone's name and joked around with them as did all the waitresses. Laughter and friendly chatter filled the small restaurant. The food was delicious, we were in country breakfast heaven! Eggs, bacon, sausage, ham fried potatoes, Texas Toast, biscuits and gravy! All tasted made from scratch!!! Even the coffee was good to the last drop! I can't believe how many years we spent going to McD's to eat dry prepackage foods. This is a real travelers oasis! read more

We were in Alpine in August for my niece's graduation and had breakfast at Magoo's. As Ben says below, this is definitely a spot for locals. The waitresses knew most of the patrons by name, and all the men wore cowboy hats! I loved the huevos rancheros. The portion was huge and the beans were quite spicy. As a native Texan, I have been eating Mexican food all my life and the hotter the better, so I am always impressed when a place makes something that I think is hot. Service was exemplary, and the prices were very reasonable. This will be our go-to spot for all our future visits to Alpine. I hope my niece finds a long and useful career there so we can keep coming back. read more

I've been in Alpine two days thus far, and I can't really figure it out here; when the Mister walk into places, we see plenty of locals. But the town itself seems dead when we drive around. Things that seem like they should be open aren't, and places named for a blind cartoon character serve Mexican food. I don't get it. Nevertheless, we found Magoo's after trying to hit La Trattoria for breakfast, only to be rebuffed by a 'Sorry, We're Closed' sign. Every car in town seemed parked at Magoo's, so we took the hint and pulled in. It's self-seating, and seemed pretty busy, but the bussers, etc. were quick to clear off tables. It's all communal seating, too, meaning you'll likely be at a table with strangers (at least, if you arrive as a twosome, as the Mister and I did). I settled on a the oddly named Magooito Burrito -- basically a breakfast taco w/ sausage, eggs, cheese, potatoes and bacon. The Mister got the same, along w/ a side of biscuits and gravy. Our orange juice tasted like the frozen variety, and someone didn't use enough water -- it was almost too sweet. Still, my Magooito was large and satisfying, and had plenty of everything. The Mister's, however, was missing bacon, which was more than annoying -- you don't mess w/ a man's bacon. The biscuits were fluffy and the gravy wasn't bad, though it oddly had chunk of pre-pressed sausage and a small pool of grease on top when it arrived. Relative to other places we've eaten in Alpine, though, I'm giving three stars -- the service was decent, the food was decent and the place was clean. I didn't see not one fly buzzing around (which, sad to say, hasn't been the case anywhere else). read more
