We went after seeing a movie, expecting a nice sit-down dinner, and it turned into one of the most frustrating dining experiences we've had in a long time. The restaurant is overpriced for the portion sizes. In fact, we live about 20 minutes away, and every member of my family ended up making something to eat when we got home because we were still hungry. The service was extremely slow and disorganized. My wife waited over an hour for her food, and the waitress repeatedly kept telling us "just another minute," but the food never came. Eventually, we had to cancel her order so we could just pay and leave instead of waiting even longer. To make matters worse, everyone's food came out at different times, so we weren't even able to eat together, and several dishes arrived cold. At one point, a table that had been seated about half an hour after us received all of their meals before our table had even been fully served. Even the drinks felt overpriced: $2.95 for a soda served in a three-quarter-filled 8 oz. glass. Overall, the prices, portion sizes, and service simply did not match the experience, and we left disappointed and still hungry. read more

My family and I were staying in a nearby hotel after a day of shopping at the Woodbury outlets. It's kind of the the middle of nowhere out here so I was concerned about having a good meal for dinner, but to my surprise Magoya was pretty good! We got the agedashi tofu appetizer, I got a tempura udon, and my parents each got box sets that came with miso soup. All of us were very full and pleased by the end of the meal. This place right off the bat felt weird, they had a dirt lot as their parking lot, sharing it with a grouping of tiny houses. So off the bat again, really beautiful and clean restaurant as far as looks go, and actually room in the booth seating here. Service is what really held down this place, in a big way. The server I had I mean she was nice enough but I got the vibe she was bored and was actually staring out the window while I was ordering and am like wow, sorry I dared to order here and maybe take out is more your speed. The sushi rolls which were the Yama roll and red dragon, honestly very good, and beautiful plated, despite the service food was on point for me. Now another weird oddity was the fact the lady that was my server did the usual asking my enjoyment of the meal, which am like oh she looks at me now rather than the window. I give her my answer and weirdly enough she lingered there after I give her opinion which am like, did someone freeze her time or something just weird. Also the chef from the kitchen rather than the server got the dirty dishes and cups to clean before I was ready to pay. Not surprising they took forever to give me bill which am like shit should just left money in the table and walked out, but I try respect my servers and give them it personally if I can. Honestly if you want try this place, order to go 100%, that nice dining room is only for show, not use. Also they like other reviews said very expensive, and not much in the way of a lunch menu fixes it. We went on New Years Eve and it was the worst dining experience I've had at a sitdown restaurant in years. It took my wife more than 1 hr and 45 min to receive her meal. The rest of us were served at all different times so literally no one ate together. The waitress was barely responsive and the owner didn't care at all about her terrible service. We decided to come here for lunch while venturing out the land far away from home. Of course we checked the reviews of some restaurants in the area via google and then Yelp. We found this neat place! I had a bowl of vegetable bibimbap and Hubby had Nabeyaki Udon. So they serve both Japanese and Korean food here. My bibimbap served with miso soup. I got the bibimbap in a hot pot. It stayed hot in the pot to the end of my last scoop, wow! The food was good but I thought something's lacking in my bibimbap taste. Bibimbap is usually very rich in taste. It could be that I didn't use the sauce entirely. Whatever the case is I finished my bibimbap! Although the bowl is big, the portion of the food is small. The price is a bit higher because this is the only Japanese/Korean restaurant in the area. We figure they receive pretty good customers at night but lunch is probably quiet. This is a nice, spacious and very clean restaurant. The sushi bar is not that big, there's only one sushi chef at lunch time. A very good restaurant to try in the area. read more

Spicy crab meat salad had incredibly flavors. It wasn't the usual imitation crab meat with spicy mayo and cucumber. This had actually chili spicy that was perfect and the multiple layers of flavor just had us smiling The Steven Roll I got with brown rice. It came out with this beautiful black rice and the flavors from the roll were sublime just a real treat. A few random sashimi cuts were all quality fish and just delicious. Salmon Teriyaki was beautifully cooked. We were wondering if they steamed the salmon because it came out so tender so juicy and just well executed. The service is humble and modest with a genuine feeling. This is not a quick bite to eat, if you come to Magoya be prepared to enjoy the company of those you are with. We found Magoya while we were up visiting from NYC, on a long weekend. My boyfriend loves sushi and so I wanted to treat him to dinner. The interior of Magoya is really lovely. It feels very warm and welcoming, like a little house. The service was efficient and helpful - and not overly friendly taking our order and bringing the food. (personally, I prefer a server who doesn't want to be my BFF). We ordered the sushi deluxe and a bento box- both were delicious. My boyfriend's box was full of yummy things. The eel was particularly delicious! We also had a great unfiltered sake. I found the food to be traditional - this was not fancy, gimmicky sushi. It was fresh and delicious. At the end of the meal we did speak with our server, and she was just lovely. We would definitely go back. I think the reviewers here who are looking for smiling servers are kinda silly. It's not the server's job to make you feel loved. It's the server's job to bring you food and drink. If they don't smile, don't take it personally. I think 99% of Americans don't leave reviews because most places are in that range where everything is good enough and you really can't complain or you can't think of anything nice to say. When someone has something to say, it's usually because something was AMAZING or just awful. I preface this review with that intro because I am that person who probably will never leave a review unless it's genuinely life changing for the positive or negative. Our words, reviews ought to have power and I do not take responsibility of sharing my experiences lightly. Enough intro- this place sucked. For context: I came to eat here after going to Legoland, wanting something clean after a day of greasy snacks. Do I regret that decision? Let me tell you the ways. Ambiance: location looks like a roadside diner- nothing screams fine dining establishment. You go in and your hot with mixed east and south Asian decor. The furniture is rickety( the chair i sat one was at an angle), floor is uneven, the bathroom door has something tacky on the door that made it hard to open or close properly - the nice restaurant polish couldn't hide the icky underneath. But fine, let's just say that's me being snooty. After all the sushi bar and kitchen looked clean from what I could see- that's something. Service: how does a sushi restaurant fuck up the basics? Amongst other things- I ordered a salmon roll. It's salmon, rice and seaweed paper. I was in a group with kids and our food, we ordered what we assumed would come out fast, and it took almost 2 hours. What in the actual fuck?! Everyone made the same joke- did they go to farm the salmon? Is it that fresh. It must be. Or they're torturing the fish because this is dumb. When I asked for ETA or water, the best response I could get was a half hearted "sure". Ummm what kind of restaurant has a waitress filling water in the kitchen? A group of 5 people, it took her 3 trips back and forth to get water refills for the one time she remembered to actually do it. And then, after being dismissed, ignored- essentially starved for almost 2 hours, we have an angry toddler in the group and the lady has the nerve to try and act like she can help solve it, completely ignoring the mom who was even more livid. So what does that leave? Food. I tried to think about what compelled me to stay even after I couldn't stand the service- at the end I was hungry and I wanted sushi. Where else was I gonna go. So I kept saying- well if the food is good, that will make up for it. Fuck me. The portions were stupid and it was "ok" at best. Going back to my first point- if everything was ok, I probably wouldn't have bothered. But for the price? Dont. Just avoid it. I can guess you can make better sushi from home. Side note: avoid especially if you are coming from legoland. You'll have hungry kiddos with you and the last thing you need is hangry kiddos. I can't figure out if I was ignored because I was Korean or with kids but the fact that I am asking that is what's wrong with this establishment. I am not asking for much, just a decent meal in a timely fashion with people who understand that in service it's a mutually beneficial relationship if people remember to treat each other with some kindness. Right from the start, Magoya's food is excellent. We had a large party and everyone enjoyed their dish. We did, however, have an issue with the service. We were 7 people and there was only one other party of 3 eating at the same time. It was very difficult to get the attention of the server. Many times we had to get up and search for her. We also had to ask several times for the same items. For example- I confess, we all can't eat with chopsticks. We asked several times for silverware. The first time she brought 2 knives and forks. Then she was asked again and brought 2 more sets. Seriously! Are they hoarding silverware! The server also would give us a glaring look every time we asked for something. Seriously! We are not a demanding group. If you don't enjoy serving your customers, find another profession. We should not be made to feel bad just asking for basic items. I always come to eat here and today as I was checking out, this lady is saying "no tip?" I understand times are hard and I didn't have any cash to tip. She then proceeded to keep saying tip and Im telling her I can't I'm sorry. And she points to my card. I said again i cannot I am sorry. I think Magoya is the best sushi spot in the county. They offer a large variety of rolls that are very creative and delicious. Their fish is fresh, and the sushi rice is perfectly cooked and seasoned. I ordered a large hot sake which costs $25 here, but you probably get about 1 litre of beverage. A large here is definitely at lease twice the size of a large anywhere else. It's more than enough for two people to share. We were done with our entire meal, including desert before the sake was finished. I went on a Wednesday night and the restaurant had a steady stream of customers. This is nice to see espectially in a smaller town like Chester considering the restaurant is located outside the main business area. read more

I always go with the teriyaki beef and it's not bad at all. I only gave it 3 stars because, for me as a non-sushi eater, the options are limited. Came here last weekend with some friends while traveling to Newburgh. After getting sick on sushi from some place a week before I was hesitant to eat raw fish but decided to conquer my fear. I ordered the tuna lover which includes an eight piece spicy tuna roll. Tuna sushi. And tuna sashimi. It was delicious and fresh.
