Came by here for some early dinner to go. They definitely notice you right away here, so easy enough to place an order. Found it kind of funny how high the order counter is, that you can't see anyone sitting on other side of it unless they stand up, kind like a curious cat looking up from behind something. So my order was very quickly made and man do I mean fast, the lady behind counter assigned someone sitting around to the back. The wonton sushi tacos which I got spicy tuna and spicy salmon were worth the trip alone, I mean they actually very spicy with a kick, just right amount of meat and salsa on top with avocado. Plus spicy yum yum sauce to dip in. Bear mountain roll, was great, plenty snow crab and large shrimp tempura. Very nice service and atmosphere, the entrees are made to order so expect a small wait as making sushi is labor intensive. There is street parking right in front of the restaurant if you're lucky, otherwise a parking lot across from the restaurant on Main St. is convenient. Tried the Cupid (shrimp tempura, avocado and mango in soybean paper w/ a special sauce) and Titanic (spicy crunch tuna, salmon, avocado) completed the sensory experience. Sushi is always on point. Tonight, I decided to try some pan fried noodles on the side and it definitely is not pan fried noodles. The noodles are essentially angel hair. On arrival, place smelled like heavy old cologne, i couldn't smell any sushi ,but there was a large group there and some other patrons, I was pretty sure that was reason. Sushi rolls and spring roll (skimpy filling) : The taste just made it to average for me. Salmon looked a lil unappealing, almost slimy looking . Not going to lie I was nervous to eat. Anyway I ended up throwing half away I couldn't enjoy due to taste, look, and memory of the restaurant smell that day. ENOUGH WITH THE CRUNCHY!!! Order 2 different 3 Roll Combos and all 6 rolls have so much crunchy inside!!! Every roll tastes EXACTLY THE SAME! Annoying thing it doesn't say anything on the menu about how 25-30% of every roll is going to have the crunchy inside. It was cute and novel when places started doing this and adding crunchy in the rolls but now it seems it's being used as filler and not for flavor. Also don't believe them when they say 20 min on the phone for pick up. I called at 6:10 the woman says 20 min. I don't rush over there because I've been in this situation with them before and so I show up 50 minutes later at 7pm and stand there until 7:10. It's just annoying. And it's now a pattern. Ive been doing take out from Hanami for years and last night finally went to the restaurant. I've alway loved their food. But, last night changed my mind. Service was terrible. We were seated at e very back table next to a screaming , running 4 year old child who belonged to the restaurant. I understand that the child had to be there but don't seat customers at the next table. The child had no supervision. We ordered a lot of individual items and as they kept coming, the server never removed the empty dirty dishes. I had to ask him and he laughed at me. He also said he "didn't know" when we would get our food. There was a very long wait. Shumai was not good. Tasteless. Gyoza was adequate. Sushi was excellent and roll was very good. Ordered pick up, was told 20 minutes, took 45. The sushi I ordered was ready within 5 minutes of my arrival then sat on the sushi bar for over 15 minutes while my hot food was being cooked. After 3 employees walked out of the kitchen with freshly cooked food I wondered why I was still waiting. THEN the sushi chef walked back there and a few minutes later walked out with his lunch. Clearly they prioritized their lunch and not their customers lunch. The place smelled of old fish so I never even tried the sushi however the one roll I ate that didn't contain fish was insanely small. On Sunday's they (hopefully still have) half of sushi for Touro students. Unfortunately their service is slow due to the mom and dad that try and run the entire place with minimal help. It gets busy during Sunday evenings, but still worth it for the price of the amount of sushi you can get. They half a decent menu of regular sushi (cali, philly, yellowtail, tuna, shrimp, avocado, peanut, sweet potato, etc.) rolls and some specialty ones which are definitely worth checking out like angry bird and osake bomb. Their seafood is fresh-ish, but probably frozen for some time. In Middletown with time, I'd say this is some of the better sushi you can get. Oh my goodness! The sushi was both beautiful and delicious. For the quality of the food, I can't believe how reasonably priced it was. We were so looking forward to eating again at hanami but we were very disappointed. As of june, hanami is under new ownership and is now a disaster. We ordered an appetizer of sashimi, 3 bento boxes, and a steak hibachi. The meat was dry, tough and flavorless. The vegetables were primarily onions. The sashimi included fake crab meat and was was thinly cut. The new owner is clearly cutting every corner and counting pennies. While somenthings were good, the waitress was courteous and the dumplings were flavorful. All & all we left dissastisfied and we don't plan on returning. read more
