I gave this office a one star Due to the management company. The physicians and support staff are great ,,,,but the fact that there are not enough employees and over scheduling this is not a safe or efficient office. Everytime I went I would spend 5 to 6 hours sitting and waiting. The check in waiting room waiting room has at least 50 people waiting to check in.waited 45 mins to check in for my appointment ,,,then directed to the actual waiting room with even more people waiting. Most of the clients were very old and many had difficulty walking...there was no water or coffee..no food and we all sat and waited to be called. Once called we would see staff for 15 mins and doctor for about 5..as an example my final visit I had an 11:00 am appt and left at 3:30. This was typical of every one of my visits. The reason for long wait was management who hires and sets quota. The staff is great..but overworked...I had my surgery and follow-ups and each appt was like this. I am so happy to never return. But my concern is to have so many elderly and non English people waiting with no food or water Or any idea how long they will sit unt being seen. Guess money does rule all . My suggestion...hire more staff and schedule fewer people each day. read more

Dr Shumski performed cataract surgery on both eyes just recently. Implanted premium multi-focal lenses using laser surgery. I was super nervous about my vision, of course. This was the greatest possible experience I could ever have. Both eyes came out 20-20, across all distances from 16" to infinity, with zero astigmatism. They started out about -3.5D nearsighted and up to 1.5D astigmatism. Absolutely awesome experience. I am a PITA about surgery. I research and question everything. Its sometimes hard for doctors to put up with me and my questions. Dr. Shumski not only did great work, but was gracious about my questions and called me 3 times to answer questions. I also got several email answers. I received full documentation about the surgery and all questions/concerns were answered. His staff and associates were also wonderful. From the receptionist to techs to ophthalmologist who reviewed my post-surgery progress. I cannot be more happy about the entire experience. read more

Best Doctor's office ever. Truly. Found Dr. Shumski via ChatGPT upon researching Orlando area's best cataract surgeon. Dr. Shumski's was the only name mentioned, followed by places. My mother, Maichu, received the absolute greatest care and guidance, which was critical as she was having surgery on her "good eye." First, the wait time is never long. (This is worth mentioning, as we have seen surgeons elsewhere where wait times were upward of hours. This can cause stress and unease.) Second, the staff is caring. Not only friendly, but helpful, and pleasant. Every room is immaculate with state-of-the-art equipment. Dr. Shumski performed laser cataract surgery that was an astonishing success. Mai says it was painless (only discomfort was "about 20 eye drops and switching rooms" pre-surgery. This is a far cry from the cataract surgery performed on her right eye a few years ago by a different office in the area.) Laser seems to be the way to go: less pain, and most importantly, it's safer. Maichu doesn't use computers, and has urged me several times to leave Magruder a review, and I hope this has helped you in finding the right fit for your eye journey. We went to an appointment to schedule cataract surgery at Magruder. The staff couldn't have been nicer and the eye exam my husband received was thorough and well done. After the exam the doctor explained how laser cataract surgery was done, emphasizing that laser cataract surgery does a better job than surgery by hand because of the precision of the lasers, which only take a minute to complete the breaking up of the cataract. We then went to schedule the surgery with another member of the office staff who informed us that the doctor recommended specialty lenses that cost almost $7000, which are not covered by insurance. My husband said that he wanted basic lenses because, at his age, he wanted to see the way he had for his 70+ years and these were covered by insurance. We then were informed that if he opted for the basic lenses the surgery would not be done with lasers but by hand, even though we were just told that this method was much less precise. He chose this office because the word Laser was in their name but he could not receive this service unless we paid thousands and thousands of dollars for lenses he didn't want. I had Lasix almost 2 years ago at Magruder on Par Street. It has been an awful experience of: -numerous appointments with NO resolution or enhanced vision. -Expensive and not a GUARANTEE (should of stayed with glasses). At least I could see. -AWFUL dry eyes (apparently I had dryness before & it's even worse now) -I never had a problem seeing up close now that's completely changed -so if you think you're going to achieve 20/20 vision, I would make sure you're a viable candidate because they will take your money, regardless. read more

If you are like me and have never worn contacts because you have major anxiety with anything going in your eyes then you have probably put this off over and over out of fear, but my advice is to get a consult at Magruder and go for it! Getting Lasik here was a great decision. My nearsightedness reached a kind of plateau with a steady correction script (-3.0) in my late 30's, and I had astigmatism in one eye, but I ended up being a great candidate for Lasik nonetheless. I required extra convincing for various reasons, including glaucoma in my immediate family. It helped me to speak with Dr. Gonzalez in-depth prior to my surgery. She did laboratory research on laser correction procedures before becoming a patient care specialist; that is, she is both knowledgeable and caring. So was my surgeon, Dr. Robin. He is board-certified and has taught out at UCF. He explained that Lasik would not put me at greater risk for glaucoma. Ultimately this to me is about having more pro's than con's. It has been a month and a half since I had Lasik on both eyes in one day. I have awesome 20/15 vision, great night vision, and have no need for glasses/contacts. I am thrilled with this, especially since my contact lens habits were not always spectacular, leading to a history of minor infections. But there is one substantial downside, for now: because I work in front of a computer screen for 8 to 11 hours a day, I'm not going to sugarcoat the one downside: because of medicines I take for other things, I have had a good bit of dryness in my (left) eye. So I have had to keep buying and using big boxes full of preservative-free drops in vials, for over a month and a half I am not saying I was not warned that this could be an annoying side effect. I was, by both Dr. Gonzalez and Dr. Robin. I am simply saying for some of you (closer to 40 and up), maybe taking an anti-anxiety or antidepressant med: substantial dryness for a good while may be a reality for you. But it is manageable. It happens because some surface corneal nerves are cut when they make the flap. Therefore the surface of the eyeball loses ability to signal to your brain: "Hey, I need some tears!" So you have to use drops to kickstart the cycle of moisture. As the corneal nerves continue to grow back into the flap (as both doctors explained), this will increasingly vanish to nothing in time. So say the science and the case histories, and I believe in those things. The cost is high but bearable; you can finance it if necessary. If your credit is decently good, you may even qualify for a credit card with 0% interest for this procedure during a promotional period time (mine is 24 months). So I have 2 years to pay this off with no interest. Not bad, considering I will be needing my money for drops : ). still worth it. read more

Pros: - The ophthalmologists I met all seemed friendly, professional, and caring. I was impressed by their backgrounds, each one having completed many thousands of successful surgeries. Whenever I asked questions, they answered clearly and at a level I could understand, without rushing me (to get to the next patient) or dismissing me. - The person who explained all the post-op instructions was terrific. I think her name was Liden. She explained the purpose of each medication, instructions for each, and walked me through their post-op worksheet. Made me feel calm and taken care of. - They use state-of-the-art machine learning technology, which automates the laser surgery part. The surgery itself only takes 15 minutes and doesn't hurt at all. - Their main office on Par street is very nice, spacious, and modern. I felt comfortable and welcome walking in, as the staff greeted me warmly. The waiting area is relaxing as well, unlike a typical cramped glumly-lit doctors office. - Their package comes with a 10-year warranty to perform FREE minor corrections as needed. This is important. I've spoken to others who have had lasik but did not get minor corrections over time, so now they have to wear glasses again ~10 years after their initial lasik procedure. - My eyes hurt a few hours after surgery, which is typical. After I ate some food and took the Tylenol PM they gave me, I passed out and woke up feeling much better. My left eye had almost no pain, yet I could see perfectly. My right eye had a "foreign body sensation" which is apparently normal. I can see great now, even though things sometimes are a little blurry (this is normal)! Cons: - I drove an hour to my lasik surgery at the Magruder main office. Me and my husband both took PTO, since you need a driver to go home with. After a bunch of tests, and right before starting surgery, the ophthalmologist had to cancel it because I had worn contacts the previous day. I told him that nobody told me not to wear contacts prior to surgery. My patient coordinator didn't tell me. So we wasted 2 days worth of PTO!! I felt frustrated that something so basic was missed -- a lot of attention was spent on making sure I paid for surgery, but almost no attention was spent on sharing important pre-op information. - Also, their "Pre-Operative Instructions" sheet (photo attached) does not mention anything about not wearing contacts at least 3 days prior to surgery. You would think many of their patients who need their vision corrected wear contacts on a regular basis and that this would be an important point to include in their instructions, but it's not there. - After rescheduling my surgery, I suddenly remembered they forgot to reschedule my post-op, so I had to call and leave a voicemail to remind them to do that... at this point, I was doing their job for them. - Expensive. $5900 for lasik for both eyes. No discounts, not even if you pay in cash. My patient coordinator told me EyeMed vision insurance would partially cover the cost. She was wrong. I called EyeMed and confirmed Magruder is not in their network. Again, doing their job for them. - And after all of these pathetic mistakes, the patient coordinator never reached out to apologize or take responsibility. - Doctor Phillips office is not as nice, spacious, or modern as their main office. Not a big deal though. - Lack of an automated scheduling and reminder system. A person calls you to confirm your appointment, which seems like a "nice personal touch", but one time the person who called me gave me the wrong timeslot (930am). I had to correct her that my appointment is at 9am, lol... automated SMS reminders 1 week before and 1 day before would be an upgrade. - Wish they gave me more artificial tears. The sample they give you lasts for like 1 day, yet they say it's REALLY IMPORTANT to use them because your eyes are very dry. After paying $5900, it would've been great if they included a week's worth of artificial tears. Come on guys, it's not that expensive... - One of the ophthalmologists has medical professional liability (MPL) claims on his record. Do your research before choosing the ophthalmologist for you. Overall, 1 star for the operations, 5 stars for my ophthalmologist and the surgery itself. read more

I have waited 10 months to write this review to give it a fair shot, and give my eyes a chance to really heal. I had a really subpar experience here, and my quality of life and eyes are suffering for it. I was extremely nervous to get any procedure done, but after my consultation, I chose the SMILE procedure because it seemed to be the healthier option for my eyes in the long run. Less chance of dry eye in the future, and no flap to worry about. The procedure itself was fine, a bit uncomfortable but nothing too extraordinary. I found the experience to be a bit jarring, it felt like an assembly line. You literally see the previous person walking out as you walk in for the procedure, and as you walk out you see the next person coming in. No time to rest and recover after the procedure either, they just swiftly kick you right out. The very same night I got the procedure, my right eye was seeing perfectly, but my left eye was seeing really odd and hazy. The next day at my follow up, the optometrist seemed concerned because there was inflammation at the incision site. She said to give it a few days but the haziness worsened so I went back a few days later. Turned out, the surgeon found that there was build up in my cornea at the site of the surgery, presumably due to my eye not being cleaned correctly during the procedure. It is really uncommon to have build up happen during SMILE since the incision is very small, I was apparently one of only two cases where that happened in the span of a year. 7 days after my SMILE procedure, I went back and had to have my eye irrigated and scraped to get rid of the build up. I think that these back to back procedures on my eye have been an absolute detriment because I have been suffering from really severe dry eye on that particular eye for the last 10 months. It is unbearable, and has cost me thousands of dollars in over the counter eye drops and other procedures I have tried for the dry eye, like MiboFlo. After this follow up procedure, I went back to the clinic almost weekly because my vision in my left eye kept getting worse, and I continually was being gaslighted by all of the doctors. They kept assuring me that the only reason I couldn't see right was because of my dry eye and that it would clear up on its own. I was even told that I was fixating on the discrepancy in my vision too much and that my personality could be a part of the problem. I knew that this was not the case because not even the artificial tears helped me see better. After about 10 consecutive visits, I finally brought a picture to show the optometrist what my left eye was seeing like, and he finally checked my vision and found that I had astigmatism in my left eye, and my left eye was overcorrected during the procedure. I also confirmed this with another optometrist at a separate location. It took about 4 months, and a picture example for someone to finally take me seriously. I have since moved to Tampa so I have not come back to Marguder. I have found a clinic closer to me to help me with my dry eye but nothing I have tried has really helped me find relief. I've tried Restasis, Xiidra, hot eye masks every single day, and most recently MiboFlo. I am so glad that other people have had such positive experiences at Magruder, but unfortunately that was not the case for me. On top of the already insane cost of the surgery, I have spent thousands more trying to find relief for my dry eye, which negatively impacts my quality of life every single day. The only reason I am giving 2 stars is because my right eye is impeccable and sees and feels perfectly, but my left eye is the total opposite. Also Sunnie is an absolute gem and was the highlight of all of my visits. Barb at the front desk is lovely as well. Hopefully others will continue to have positive experiences at Magruder and I am the rare exception. read more

The pre-surgery anxiety was all wasted! The actual surgery was over in less than a minute; my eyes were, basically, healed within 12 hours. I went from having difficulty reading a street sign, from 20 yards, to reading the fine print on a billboard from 300+ yards away. The entire staff was amazing, but the personalized care from Dr. Magruder was simply amazing. He truly listened, didn't try to rush the consultation, as most doctors do, and understood how large a decision it was for me choosing between correcting one eye, or both. We initially decided to do only one eye, correcting for distance, and leave the other for reading. After the exam, they fitted me with goggles that gave me a realistic view of what it would be like with monovision. It was not for me. They then adjusted the goggles for having both eyes corrected and I had clarity in my decision that would not have been possible through a simple verbal consultation. It's been two years since my Lasik surgery and I am still as happy as ever with the results. When I tell people I bought a Groupon to get Lasik surgery, people think that I am insane... but I couldn't be happier with my experience. The LaserVue facility was clean, modern and sizable. I never waited long to be seen for any of my appointments and everyone - receptionists, technicians, nurses and the doctors - were professional, warm and made me feel so comfortable. Any sort of surgery can be nerve wracking, but the folks at Laservue made the experience as painless as possible.
