The other nearby Filipino place was closed, so I brought my family here. The staff was very friendly. I think our server said they usually have buffet on Saturday and Sunday but this was a Sunday and no buffet; I didn't catch his reason. My lechon paksiw was so good and I had leftover fried rice which was also very good and it was a huge portion. The adobo chicken was good, though I've had better. Same with the lumpia. The food was great! The service was even better! Our waitress took her time answering every question we had. The ambiance was decent, but I'm sure it's extra nice on Fridays nights for karaoke with the special lighting and fun background on their little stage. I think karaoke was 8pm-11pm. We went after church on Saturday night around 6:30 and just ordered for carry out. We got the pork fried rice, seafood pansit, fried pork belly, lumpia, and Biko. We came on a weekday. Food was great! Very authentic. I ordered dinuguan and loved it! I'm always looking for dinuguan every time I eat at a Filipino restaurant. Everyone enjoyed their food. Service was good too. Not a lot of customers during the weekday but we did see a lot of orders for pickup. They also cater too. I'd recommend this place for some authetic Filipino food. I had a desire for some soup.After a 45-minute wait, it arrived devoid of utensils or rice.Why not simply incorporate the cost of standard rice into the $23.99 soup? Who as a owner should want their customer to add in the food order utensils to rice. Or one napkin. Man, so this review is complex because the food has potential but they lack the consistency. First time I ordered, food was amazing, I ordered what I call the trinity. Lechon kawali, Shanghai lumpia, and pinakbet and something else that I forgot. Ordered Amazing, colors were fresh, pork was well done and crunchy and lumpia was lit! Spent good money this day. Second time, we came on Sunday, late-afternoon early evening, we didn't know they offered buffet services. So instead of ordering off the menu, we made a hasty decision to try the buffet. What a let down. I kept telling myself, "ahh, just try, we'll never know". I should have ordered off the menu because a lot of dishes were dried out, left empty, the sinigang pork had only soup, and the fruits offered had been out for a while. I get it, it was a slow day..too slow there were only three couples including us. Third time, should be a charm? Not quite. My dad wanted pinakbet and my mom been wanting lechon. Her style of lechon is how they do it here, cooked all the down almost like cracklings. But not today, I ordered 12pcs. of lumpia, all soggy like it has been nuked in the microwave, it's in my air fryer as we speak to crispy it up. The lechon kawali must have been from the buffet because it's been refired, meaning, dumped in oil to crispy it up but all it did was worsen the flavor and everything was still jiggling and not even crunchy. It's in the air fry next to the lumpia as well. The pinakbet had been sitting for a minute. Old color and veggies weren't vibrant like they should be when it's cooked fresh. Overall, I met the owners and they seem pretty nice but short cuts aren't the way to go. Consistency is key and I've worked in the food business to know sous chefs for getting canned for taking short cuts and I also know that one thing customers love, is consistency. Knowing they personally have a "go-to" or "my plug" is a place they know won't let them down. I know they can do better and hopefully if I come back, if ever, the quality is elevated. For now, it's back to chockdee for Filipino favorites. Sigh. read more

This place is brand spanking new, and is still learning its way around which is the reason I am leaving a pretty tame rating for now - the food is excellent, everyone at the restaurant is great, but there is so much room to grow into the space they have found and I will happily update my review to five stars once they have found their groove. I will start off saying that as a Filipino foodie who moved to the area from California, where the options are far more plentiful, there are many things that I have been sorely missing, one of them being a Filipino dish called bopis. I was so thrilled to see that they had bopis, and even better, on weekends it is served buffet style. My heart was singing. They also offer some of my favorite street food items, which is extremely exciting. While I know that other Filipino restaurants are trying to be more fun and upscale, and they are definitely doing it well, I have been truly homesick for a Filipino restaurant that is cozy and embodies the humble spirit of bayanihan - no bells and whistles, just good food and good company. This is a restaurant that I think can really go that distance once it grows into its niche. Some areas for growth - the presentation of the buffet feels somewhat like a very nice family party rather than an established restaurant, so in the future I hope to maybe see a more polished buffet setup. I also would love to she the interior decor develop, and I noticed on social media the owner posted looking for artists to paint and decorate with things that felt distinctly Filipino - jeepneys, bahay kubo, and the like. Mahal, in Tagalog, means love, and above all else I can tell this establishment was created and is run with love. I am excited to see it grow as it develops its aesthetic, builds and grows its equipment and staff, and gets its name out there. We tried the buffet, I'd say I will not try it again but I will come back for their menu entry, perhaps they will have something that I will like. The buffet is mediocre but that's always been in a lot of buffet. The desserts provided in that buffet is a "1" ugh sorry it didn't even cut a 2. If it's Sapin sapin that I tried oh boy not so close to it. I had also biko but it's not meeting my expectation. I got excited when I saw my fave the diniguan, menudo, bopis, but they all sweet to the taste as if they all the same, I tried the sinigang this is ok but feels like something is missing, I also tried the pakbet but it's also sweet, Sorry, maybe because I know how to cook, however I'll come back again to try some entree to update my review if they are any different. read more

This review is for their Saturday lunch buffet. They open at 11am and buffet is $20 per person. Drinks including water is not included. So bring your own water or buy bottled water from them. The restaurant is inside a plaza. It's right behind Jolt, a drive tru coffee. Plenty of parking at the side or middle of the plaza. It is hot so you cannot see i side from outside. The door is also heavily covered. When we got inside, the place was messy. Children's toys on the floor. There was a cubby with childrens backpacks - kind of like a day care. We already inside so push through. Since so many rave reviews especially in google about how good the food is. The lunch buffet has the following items: Fried area: 1. Lumpia - egg roll with veggie and pork - it was good. I suggest having it with sweet chilli sauce. One reason why this is 2 stars instead of 1 2. Kwekwek - quali egg deep fried in batter - seemed old. The batter is gross 3. Lechon kawali - pork belly - it's fried too much - very hard and dry 4. Jeprox - thin dried fish - this is ok too. Fried perfectly Dessert section 1. Biko - sticky rice with brown sugar - it's so so 2. Casava cake 3. Fresh fruit - orance slices and pineapple - I did not try them as they looked like been sitting out for long Buffet main dishes 1. Chicken adobo - seemed old 2. Dinuguan - this is good. Great balance of saltiness and acidity 3. Bistek - beef not cooked long enough. Too hard. Sauce was ok though 4. Sinigang - its also good soup with veggies and pork ribs 5. Bopis 6. They are still getting organize lumpia was good. I ordered Adobo Chicken to vinegary, chicken was chewy and not tender with no seasoning but steam rice cooked. My suggestion is serve quality whole pieces of chicken specially if you want support in the price. My wife order the pancit didn't have flavor especially the menu stated with chicken, sausage and pork. We was the first in to order takeout of 3 but the last to get order even when one family had a large order. The front counter needs to get more familiar with the menu but customer service was ok. I will give a little time to get it together and may try again. Hope for much improvement it can become a go to spot with a little adjustment and more flavoring of dishes. read more

25FEB2024 - Food is terrible and NOT fresh at all. They just opened at 1100 and it is supposed to have all kinds of food for buffet purposes, but that's not what I saw. How disappointing!!! They barely have anything. Very lame and they should be ashamed of what they put out! If only I could put "ZERO" or negative stars... I'd give them lots of that!!! My family and I were very excited to have decent Filipino food and this place just makes me extremely angry. I think that Mahal's Kitchen is serving leftover food from yesterday (more than likely). Choices include street foods, and Filipino dishes different selections from other Filipino restaurants in San Antonio area. Filipino dishes has a wide variety and influences depending on which part of the Philippines it hails from. Place is clean and presentable with small touches that give it its uniqueness and charm. 2nd: Evening holiday Party - What they did to transform their place into an evening that deserved the occasion was quite impressive. They dressed up the table cloths to make the place more special . Decorations were simple , not gaudy nor over the top but nice! They have big monitors and big screens for projecting from your laptop, so we were able to have a mini-presentation. Entertainment: they have options to sing some karaoke songs! You can rock and show your vocal talents too which Filipinos love to do. Audio equipment was good for the space. My co-worker who is from the Philippines brought Mahal's in to work one day for all of us to try. We all loved it! Today, we ordered it again for an employee luncheon. The couple who own and operate the restaurant are as nice & accommodating as can be. They offer an affordable weekday lunch buffet to include deserts (11am-4pm). They also have a weekend buffet with more entrees to choose from with earlier * extended buffet hours. They offer a small military discount to honor our service members. Hey, every little bit helps and counts :) We don't live in Universal City yet my spouse and I make the small drive just to eat their delicious food. I guess we went on a bad day based on a lot of reviews. Food was greasy and soggy. From the point that we sat down I immediately knew I wanted to leave. We gave them a chance and it was so disappointing. The whole thing was just odd. I normally don't post reviews and I feel bad but I had a terrible experience. I noticed someone mentioned it felt like they were eating leftovers in another review and I know exactly what they meant, I felt the same. The veggies in our plate were not fresh, the sprite I ordered was in a can, hot. I had to ask for plates and silverware and napkins. No ice with my sprite. Not to mention they had a baby crawling around and a dog. The little girl was asking my 2.5 year old if he knew how to watch a baby. I will not be returning. I got the fruit salad and 6 piece lumpia. The lumpia is smaller than your home cooked but the flavor and sauce are good. Something was missing but that could just be because the amount of meat was minimal. If you're expecting traditional fruit salad with coconut jelly, this isn't that. The flavor is good but it's basically fruit salad with some slices of coconut in it and frozen condensed milk. I was pretty bummed and looking for that jelly texture and fresh fruit. Fruit salad was cool and refreshing but very sweet. Overall, nice to have takeout Filipino food but does not compare to home made. With a little more meat and flavor in their lumpia, and the traditional coconut jelly in the fruit salad id be happy to change it to 4 stars. read more
