I arrived about 1/2 hr before close. I was intrigued and thought it was poke bowls since it had a Hawaiian theme. It was not. Instead it was simply rice bowls with cooked meat. There were 2 people ahead of me and 2 in the dining area. They also have an outdoor patio area. Since it was my first time, I asked the server for her recommendation. I got one of her suggestions : the bbq chicken bowl and it was meh. I paid over $2 extra for brussel sprouts to be added. The entire thing lacked flavor and was a waste of money for $15. The place was clean and had a women's restroom. The staff was friendly. However, I would not return due to the flavorless food. read more

Looking for quick lunch options before an appointment in Ballantyne lead me to Mahana Fresh. I got one of the signature Bowls. The Teriyaki Tiki Bowl was recommended as one of their top choices. The coconut rice was delicious and the teriyaki chicken and sesame ginger broccoli were full of flavor. The garlicky cilantro green beans however didn't have a striking taste and I drowned them in the creamy wasabi sauce I got on the side. I also got a side coconut sweet potato sauce but it just had an odd taste to me. Overall I want impressed with the portions or the price. I feel like you get a lot more at other places with this same concept. The manager also just stood in the background as I ordered and didn't have a friendly or happy countenance about himself. We had a catered lunch from here today. I was SO happy for the healthy option! We made our own bowls and the choices were steak, sweet potatoes, steak (which was very overcooked and rubbery), guacamole, Brussels sprouts, freshly shaved parm, a tahini dressing, and a delicious cucumber salad. Dropped in on Saturday evening for the first time. My wife and I had the place to ourselves which I attribute more to Covid than food quality. Although a simple Subway-like concept where your bowl is prepared in front of you, it has a very unique niche, offering gluten-free, healthy ingredients. You can build-your-own or go with one of their signature combos, which is what we did. I went with the Island Bliss Bowl for $10.49 which was a Mahana sized bowl consisting of kale crunch salad, Buffalo cauliflower, honey Sriracha Brussels sprouts, Key West chicken and citrus ginger sauce. I enjoyed the diversity of flavors and textures. My only complaint is that everything was lukewarm to warm at best. My wife's Big Mahana bowl ($11.99) had chicken and very tender beef. She gave it a thumbs up but again, there was a temperature problem. They offer four savory sauces of which we tried two. Both were excellent! The atmosphere is light and airy. It has a Caribbean island vibe which we both enjoyed, but the music became a bit irritating after the first 15 minutes or so. Ample outside seating is available. Sanitation score was 95.5. Service, although limited, was friendly and attentive. Overall we enjoyed our first visit. It is a much needed addition to the area. If they can address the good temp issues, we could be regulars. Cute healthy alternative lunch! The man was not very welcoming and didn't say anything to me when approached the counter and stared at the menu. Eventually he asked what would I like. I ordered the BBQ chicken bowl which was delicious and refreshing. After working out this was the perfect meal/portion I needed! I ordered the berry punch which was good and unique. The reviews of this restaurant are all over the place for some reason ... I had a pleasant experience. Walked in around 5 pm on Wednesday. The restaurant was completely empty. I built my own bowl (Mahana - 1 base, 2 veggies, and 1 protein). Selected sesame noodles (base), sesame ginger broccoli and roasted mushrooms (veggies), and teriyaki chicken for protein. For my sauce, I went with citrus ginger. A few reviews mentioned their food was cold; unfortunately, mine was barley warm. Temperature aside ... the bowl was delicious! Also previous reviews mention a lack of seasoning ... I did not experience this. Everything from the noodles, broccoli, mushrooms and chicken was seasoned well - and the sauce was on point!!! The bowl/portions were fine in my option - found it to be filling. I can definitely see myself coming back and trying this bowl again!!! I have passed this location a few times and it's always empty - not sure why as the food is good. However, no one wants to be served food that is nearly cold. read more

I had mixed feelings about this review mainly because the food was so good but the staff was to me a very frustrating experience. It was very hard to understand the young man taking the order mainly because he spoke low & fast . The mask only made it harder. Also frustrating because I couldn't see the food. Most of it had metal lids on it and I had to ask him to keep repeating things and show me what he was trying to tell me. All the food was bottom of the bowls - not much in any of them as it was after 8 pm and they closed at 9:00. I was very hesitant that this food would be any good. I have to tell you it was delicious. Really really delicious! I chose the Big Mahana bowl which included basmati rice, cauliflower rice, Key West chicken, BBQ chicken and broccoli and Brussel sprouts. The hubs also chose the Big Mahana bowl ~. (it was buy one get one) His included sweet potato noodles Brussel sprouts and ahi tuna . He chose double portions of each . One thing that was frustrating was the steak. It is made to order. So if you ordered it, it took 6-8 minutes to cook so your food would be sitting in your bowl waiting on the steak . I decided not to go that route as I wanted to eat at the same time my hubs was eating . I have to tell you this food was legit delicious. I don't think I will ever go again so late . If and when we come back it will be mid day when hopefully all the food will be fully stocked. Four stars for delicious food. read more

We found this place through Yelp and gaove it a try as it's a 5 minute drive from our home. Their slogan is "freshness isn't a saying it's a commitment" and they sure aren't kidding!! I had a Big Mahana bowl which includes 2 proteins and 2 veggies. My base was the crunchy kale salad and spinach salad. The kale salad was incredibly tasty and had great flavor. For my proteins I had teriyaki chicken and mojo pork to compliment each other. And for my veggies I tried the honey sriracha Brussels sprouts and broccoli salad. The sprouts weren't spicy at all so never fear there. My wife had a little Mahana with coconut rice and chicken. We will definitely be back as the price and quality of food cannot be matched. It very much has a cafeteria feel with everything in steam trays...the coconut rice was good but the broccoli was steamed to death, soggy, chicken seemed like it had been in the steamers too long...service was pretty much non existent...not the healthy fast food option I was hoping for...maybe it was an off day...we went mid afternoon on a Wednesday. So I finally got a delivery service subscription (Door Dash to be exact) and were it not for that I likely would not have discovered this amazing hidden gem. I'm truly grateful because within 1 week of getting the subscription this is the only place I've ordered from so far and I've gotten the same meal each time. The only exception is that each time I added on a different side. The sauce is also crack so next time I'll probably get an extra sauce because it's honestly so good that could drink it lol. I'm excited to try something new but for right now I'm super stuck on the teriyaki chicken bowl. It comes with their forbidden rice (black rice), sesame ginger broccoli and garlicky cilantro green beans. This all pairs perfect lly with the citrus ginger sauce. All the sides look so good and I want to try them all. Aside from the ones listed above so far I've had the buffalo cauliflower and the Roasted mushrooms. I love brussel sprouts and I love spicy foods so next on my list will definitely be the honey sriracha brussel sprouts! The bowls are easy create your own style, with rice, sweet potato noodles and salad options as well as veggies and different varieties of chicken. The sauces add so much flavor. At the front of the line they also some Chef Inspired bowls, so I got the key west bowl. Although they were out of the coconut rice, I had rice, sweet potatoes, honey sriracha Brussel sprouts, coconut chicken, and a coconut sweet potato sauce. So yummy and fresh! read more

The sign is colorful and the pictures of the food on the outside of the building look amazing. As soon as you walk in an array of great aromas hit your nose and instantly you're excited. Since it was my first time, I asked the young men behind the counter what their suggestions were. They gave me great suggestions, but I went with my first choice of the Mahana Bowl, which is a base, a protein and two vegetables. I loved the variety of options that one can choose from and I kinda wanted it all. I was super happy with what I chose and can't wait to go back and try another variety of fresh deliciousness. Not sure why we waited so long to try this place - I guess because the whole ballantyne village vibe with parking is a royal PAIN. However, if you hit this place early enough (or don't have to park) this is well worth the stop. The staff when we went in were super helpful and not trying to rush us down the aisle. The fact that you can substitute just about anything and you can TRY anything is quite helpful. The sesame garlic broccoli is DELICIOUS. The Brussels sprouts, delicious - you'd never think they'd pair well together with ahi tuna to boot, but you'd be wrong. It's soooooooo good. The wasabi ranch is a bit of a misleading name... the woman who told us about it said it's got wasabi flavor without the "bite" and she was 100% right. It's tasty. So many varied flavors that go together harmoniously in whatever bowl you choose. Hubs got the noodles, I opted for spinach - but everything was fresh and Mahana Mondays (you get a drink for free) has become a new one to add to the rotation. We both got the tuna, so we can't speak for the other proteins, but the ahi tuna was so delightfully fresh and had the expected Ahi tuna "punch" of flavor. With the broccoli and Brussels, WHAMMO! It was such a good experience for me, who follows a paleo diet. I was able to eat Sesame Garlic Broccoli, Roasted Mushrooms, with a Spinach base. The staff was so kind and even offered us a meat sample when we were unable to make a decision, being it was our first time. The Grilled Steak I chose was delicious , and the peaceful atmosphere made it more enjoyable. I recently checked out Mahana and overall, it was about what I expected from a franchise. The ingredients were average quality. The food was still flavorful, but it didn't look like it would be, overall I was pleasantly surprised. I appreciated the variety on the menu. I couldn't decide what to get so I got a spicy ahi thing and a teriyaki thing. Service was quick and friendly, and the atmosphere was fine. I'd say it's worth a try. read more

Like so many other reviewers, we agree. We live right behind Ballantyne Village's Mahana Fresh & were thrilled when they opened to spare us from cooking & doing dishes every night. Three deaths in my family (different causes & doctors could even figure out cause of death in my older brother's -- my educated guess is SEPSIS. Thanks for even reading this, but I have to say Mahana Fresh served delicious food when it opened. It went downhill quickly, I got food poisoning and apparently so have others. I'd feel remiss if didn't post this. Maybe management changed? Such a shame! read more

In my several visits to the Charlotte location, the food is good but other things lack. The food is luke warm, portions have seemed to decrease, the prefilled sauces have little to no sauce in them and the staff isn't especially friendly. My mom and I ordered bowls the other night for takeout. We both loved them! We had been out most of the day and were famished, so I didn't get a picture. She had quinoa with sweet potatoes, garlic green beans, chicken and the citrus sauce. I had the sesame noodles with the sweet potatoes, brussel sprouts, teriyaki chicken and creamy wasabi. The wasabi sauce and noodles paired incredibly well together, next time I want to sub kale for the brussels. Only downside, which is probably more of a personal preference, was that the brussels sprouts were on the crunchy side. I prefer mine softer, but they tasted delicious. Because of that, the cashier took it upon herself to charge me $2.00 for extra kale without eeven asking me. I did not catch it until my way out. Really awful way to do business and poor service. Really loved this place! The food was so good! The bowl on the bottom has sweet potato noodles and crunchy kale salad as the base with roasted sweet potato and tofu, sautéed mushrooms and roasted broccoli. The upper bowl is the same except for added green beans. They have several sauces to accompany the bowl. We loved all the ones we tried. Highly recommend this place. Will return. I went to this restaurant this weekend for a togo meal. When I got home, after a few bites, I saw that the barbecue chicken was undercooked and had zero flavor! The lack of flavor is typical of Charlotte food unfortunately however the undercooked chicken is a serious matter. I called back and the person in charge did not believe me and insisted that I bring the chicken bowl back. I am calling the Health Department and I plan to follow her instructions and go back during lunch and let everyone in line know of this gross experience. Since that's what she wants me to do.
