Had a lovely solo night out at La Belle Helene! Had reservations in advance and was waited on quickly and very attentively. I ordered the arugula salad which was incredibly delicious. Flavorful, with both very savory and yet light ingredients which made it perfect for an entree. Not too dense but also filling enough for the wait until dinner. Then the salmon a la plancha. The salmon was cooked to perfection and not overdone, which is unfortunately often the case. The perfect portion along with the tomatoes and kale to keep it rich, but still somehow light. Ended the night with their signature (and recommended) le citron lemon dessert which was to die for. Steak Frites (5/5): The steak was well seasoned and well cooked. Lots of flavor but maybe just a bit tough (that might've been because it was ordered medium though). The fries were battered and very crispy. These are the best kind! Complimentary Puff Pastry (4/5): These had the flavor of the bread at Brazilian steakhouses but with a different texture. The pastry was crumbly and there was a chilled gruyere mousse inside. Nice way to start the meal. French Onion Soup (3/5): Thick soup with lots of flavor. A little too sweet and tangy for me. I liked how much cheese there was on top. Duck A L'Orange (3/5): The duck wasn't that great. The skin wasn't crispy and it was a little too gamey. There was also very little meat in general. The orange sauce was runnier than I expected and very subtle. Good amount of potatoes and green beans which were solid. Went in for quick drinks before the game! We had a fabulous time with the sweetest bartender! We ordered a Supernova and a L'erreuer de Perséphone. Both drinks were refreshing and well made! The L'erreuer de Perséphone is a tequila based drink that has grapefruit, lime, cinnamon, and pomegranate. The Supernova is a gin based drink with house made lemonade, butterfly pea tea, elderflower, and lavender. (It was fun to watch her add the elderflower/lavender purple syrup to the top of the drink). The sweet bartender realized I was taking pictures and gave me a rosemary garnish and lemon twirl. The attention to detail was so kind. The atmosphere cannot be beat here. So far, La Belle Helene is my favorite to visit. The grand ceilings, stunning light, florals, and clean environment truly transport you. Great place to grab a bite and drinks before a show at Knight Theater next door. I'm happy I finally got to check this spot out- I came across it awhile ago, when I was still in Winston-Salem. It reminded me a lot of the Katherine, so I added it to my Wish List. came on a Tuesday, made a reservation for 4 people at 5:45pm. We were seated at a round booth with one extra seat. It's a large, sophisticated venue with nice decor. We ordered a couple cocktails for starters and then placed our entree orders. I started with the french onion soup and mussels for my main. My friends tried the chicken, duck, and beef bourguignon. I enjoyed my soup, it was warm and tasty- definitely quite heavy on the onions! For $23 though, I did expect a larger serving (not that I could have finished it, but that seams pretty steep for just a regular bowl). And the mussels were a generous portion, also served with a baguette, perfect for dipping into the leftover butter sauce. I tried my friends duck and it was very tender and tasty too. We all enjoyed our meals, although it took quite some time for the main to arrive - definitely over 25mins. Normally it wouldn't be an issue but we were just a bit pressed for time with the show. Tried La Belle Helene recently and overall it was just okay for me. The space is really beautiful -- definitely has that upscale French brasserie vibe and feels like a good spot for a nice dinner or date night. Service was polite and professional, no issues there. Food was decent but didn't really wow me. I started with the French onion soup, which was solid and comforting, just not super memorable. For my entrée, I had the burger and fries. It was cooked fine and the flavors were good, but for the price and the setting, I expected something a little more impressive. Not a bad experience by any means, just didn't quite live up to the expectations. I do not know why it had taken me so long to have lunch here when I have worked Uptown for a long time. The decor here is stunning and I found that the atmosphere was better for a lunch meeting than other restaurants I normally go to. It's quieter and less crowded because it's a more spacious. Our waiter was very friendly and attentive so I have no complaints. We were able to make it back to the office without having to rush. I had a salad and my friend had a sandwich. The restaurant is huge but has good acoustics and a warm atmosphere. Service was quick and the servers were friendly - I am always sympathetic when I'm in a large group but they held their own. I had the duck confit for dinner and I'm SO glad I chose it. The skin was perfectly crispy and the meat was cooked to perfection. Extremely mediocre french food at extremely high prices. I cannot in good faith recommend this spot for anyone looking for authentic french fare. The only redeeming quality about this place is the ambience. Very cool looking restaurant and a nice aesthetic. High ceilings. Long bar. The bar was quite empty for a weeknight making it feel a little bit awkward to sit there. The room was very hot. It was understandably a hot day, but the inside was still approaching 80 degrees. Guests were fanning themselves with menus and I was wiping sweat from my brow while eating. This was the start of an uncomfortable meal. i was offered an amuse bouche after placing my order for a french onion soup and beef bourguignon. The bite was a little cheese puff, I would describe it as choux pastry with a thick mornay sauce. The bite was good, though I found it to be more disappointing after reading other reviews mentioning the same going back 2 years. Would be nice to see some creativity and change of pace here. The french onion soup was $22. Yes I knowingly chose to order this even given the price, but I thought there must be something insanely special about this soup to justify this price. This is a quality $10 french onion soup, but nothing more, to charge this much is ridiculous. I'll break down the points where the cost doesn't add up. 1. The cheese on top, very mild in flavor, other than texture, there's not much going on here. This should have been some remarkably high quality imported gruyere with an unmatched standout nutty creaminess. 2. The crostini floating in this soup had a nice crispiness, but were actually mildly burnt. These are matter of fact very easy to burn, but I would expect a restaurant to not use burnt food, again consider this price. So every bite was interspersed with a charred bitterness. The flavor of the bread itself was also lacking, nothing but texture here and nothing more. Should be a savory homemade bread at this cost. 3. The soup flavor itself, decent, sweet from the onions, mildly beefy, insanely salty. The waitress told me this was made with veal stock and I assumed this would be a rich stock prepared the night before, but this tasted like typical grocery store boxed stock boiled down to thicken it and condense the flavor which then made it way too salty. I can and have made much better french onion soups at home, and I'm still annoyed at the price I paid for such a mediocre rendition. The beef bourguignon was by and large the most disappointing entree though. This was not even close to being made properly and you can tell easily from the photo. It's supposed to be made with wine from Burgundy, I did not taste even a hint of wine here. I genuinely do not believe they even used any. Looking at other photos, I see some peoples look completely different with a more proper color and thickness. I don't know if there are different chefs preparing this, or if they've degraded the quality, but the change in consistency is astounding. The sauce was a thin beef stock, and probably 30% fat/oil floating on top. Again look at the photo, serving a dish with this much grease floating on top is embarrassing. This should have been a rich demi-glace. For $45 there's no justification for serving a glorified pot roast unless you went through the painstaking effort for a homemade demi-glace, boiling and reducing stock down until you have enough natural gelatin to thicken the sauce. It was not even strained and had large bits of rosemary floating in it which is not palatable to eat in such a large piece. The beef was cooked well and was tender, but dry. It had no wine flavor and should have been coated in what is essentially a wine gravy rather than the thin soup presented. It was challenging to even eat with a fork because the amount of liquid dripping off everything rather than coating it as a sauce. The potatoes, pearl onions, and carrots, were cooked well. Midway through this dish my stomach really started to hurt and it continued to hurt for about the next 8 hours. I believe it was just so greasy it was giving me indigestion. I think these two dishes as presented to me are truly an embarrassment to french cuisine. I do not believe the beef was actually braised in wine. I think all the ingredients were cooked separately, assembled into a bowl, and a ladle off the top of a stock pot was poured on and that was it. I don't understand the consistency problem, but based on the photos I could believe others have received better preparations. The price is too high to ever risk trying it again, and I would recommend to spend your money elsewhere. read more

So I came here for Thanksgiving and sat at the bar and I had a really amazing time. The restaurant was very elegant and festive. They had an amazing prefix menu. I was able to have their signature cocktail and then I had to start. I had croissants with pumpkin soup. The pumpkin soup was the major hit of the week. It was just I wish I could go get back and get some. I don't know. I think it's off the menu, but between dipping those flaky croissants into my soup the soup is creamy rich. It was just amazing and then for my entrée I had the New York strip, which was perfectly well. It was well cooked with a side of sweet potato and brussels sprouts and then to end off I had the citrouille which I wasn't too crazy about it just wasn't in my liking. It was a little different than what I was accustomed to, but overall, I really truly enjoyed my stay there. I actually plan on going back in a few weeks, but it was a really great restaurant. There's nothing not to love about La Belle Helene. If I could only eat at one Charlotte restaurant for the rest of my life, this would be it. The food is the closest I've found in the area to authentic French cuisine. It is, in a word, sumptuous. I've tried several dishes on the menu. My tastebuds have always been delighted! I particularly enjoy their bisques and seem to keep returning to the salmon. The accoutrements are ALL scrumptious. Whatever we order, though, we'd never dream of eating without a side dish of the pommes frittes! Likewise, I can't skip their dessert. I usually stick to creme brûlée at French restaurants, but La Belle Helene has encouraged me to try new confections. I'm so pleased to have had my culinary world broadened! The service is exactly what one would expect from a restaurant of this caliber. The staff is polite and attentive. This is as it should be, but I've found that, in the South (I'm sorry to draw shade on my beloved home), servers can sometimes be overly familiar, even in fine dining establishments. The ambiance is stunning, like entering a different world! You'll feel like a fairy princess--or the equivalent of you're not feeling princessy--when you enter. The only change I would make if I could wave a magic wand is the dress code. (Maybe there is a written dress code? If there is, it isn't being enforced.) Once in a while, we all want to feel special. To have a special night where reality melts away and everything is beautiful. Oh my goodness, the atmosphere was lovely. I visited here this past Sunday with someone very close to me for a quick but meaningful brunch that was very much needed. I loved the way we walked in and had our reservation set up for us. I also loved the decor and use of lighting and space. The interior design was very captivating. Cost, location, and ambience cannot make up for lackluster food. My friends and I tried La Belle Helene during restaurant week. The owners have done a masterful job of design and decor. The restaurant is fantastic, you may feel like you're in a film. Our server was very knowledgeable and personable but the service was extremely slow. We were there for almost two hours. Their cocktail game is on point, but not with the cost for some. The BOUCHÉE À LA REINE was tough you had to cut the puff pastry with a knife. The bottom was also soggy and tough, an incredible feat. The BOEUF BOURGUIGNON was fine. The beef was cooked perfectly, but where was the depth of flavor. It lacked any complexity and fell short. The ENTREMETS AUX MYRTILLES had absolutely no flavor, it was sweet but I couldn't taste blueberry, almond or honey. I was so disappointed in the dessert. We spent nearly 100 per person for food that was below standard for this price point. My taste buds should have been tingling. What a wonderful way to get a taste of France!! My girlfriend brought me here to enjoy a late brunch together and it certainly did not disappoint! As soon as we walked in I was speechless at the seemless replicated experience we had (after having just gotten back from Paris in October) it felt like I was walking back into an authentic brassiere. My friend and I both ordered the French soup, being that it was a cold and rainy day and we wanted to warm up. It was SO good! We also tried a variety of cheeses, had a desert like coffee treat, and enjoyed a French press and an N/A mimosa. The French press came with delicious macarons, and the cheese board was extraordinary! We certainly had a personal little feast and I was so grateful to get the chance. There was a baby shower taking place in the room next door with everyone dressing to the 9s and it completely elevated the experience. We came for brunch and the restaurant isn't very packed but still took so long to get our food and drinks. I was absolutely shocked when I ordered a $15 grilled cheese and tomato soup and the grilled cheese was tiny, cold, and dry (see photo). I find it hard to understand why that was listed under the main entree portion of the menu, and why the waitress did not give a heads up that it is a very small meal.
