Fri-yay was turning into Fri-yuck for me, and my original lunch plans got derailed. I suddenly decided to take a longer lunch break at work to try Main Chick Hot Chicken. There are a handful of other hot chicken shops much closer to me, but this particular one was part of Yelp LA's Fried Chicken Sandwich-a-thon. If you have absolutely no idea what I just said, think promotion of the fried chicken sandwich craze that has been sweeping over SoCal for the past few years! Main Chick Hot Chicken has a handful of locations in SoCal. This one in Long Beach is on the northeast corner of Atlantic and Artesia. When I arrived at about 1:30 PM, I honestly thought I was at a Steelcraft, but no it was a similar food court called Uptown Commons. Parking there was a battle, however. At first, I was worried I couldn't find a spot. Then, I found an open spot albeit somewhat small. I tried to adjust my car, and then I had to wait for the two cars next to me to back out. Next, another car was pulling into the spot to my left. Another car was trying to pull into the spot to my right, but allowed me to adjust my car. When I got out, I saw a few more empty spots that I could have sworn weren't empty two minutes ago. Okay, so the details may not totally be accurate, but that should at least give you an idea of the parking situation there. I entered the food court and saw a few long picnic tables. I was trying to take in the scenery when I suddenly found myself in front of the Main Chick Hot Chicken. There was one customer inside, but he was leaving with his order. I asked the friendly cashier if I was indeed at Main Chick, and she did confirm. Silly question I know, but with everything going on that day, I was surprised that I was at Main Chick without having seen any of the other restaurants there. Did I mention the cashier was friendly? Yeah? Well I need to mention it again because I believe she really wanted me to enjoy my very first experience at Main Chick. I don't even remember telling her it was my first time at a Main Chick until she asked me. She might have known when I asked her to describe the regular chicken sandwich and a dark meat chicken sandwich. She mentioned that I could get both if I choose one of the combos, but lately, I haven't had much of an appetite, so I wanted just one sandwich. She mentioned that the regular chicken sandwich was more popular, and that's when I decided on the dark meat chicken sandwich. She may or may not have been a little amused at my logic lol. She asked me my desired level of spice. Earlier that day, I had read some reviews that suggested mild was the way to go, and so that's what I did. I usually choose medium, but decided to make the switch this time around. Before paying, I had my Yelp app open and checked in to show her the 10% off check-in offer, and she immediately applied it to my order. After paying, she handed me a buzzer. I didn't even take that long of a walk before I realized I forgot to ask her how long it would take for them to prepare my sandwich. After the next customer in line ordered, I went back to the cashier and asked. She said 5-10 minutes, but went in the kitchen to check. She then said 2-3 more minutes. It was probably the next minute when my order was presented to me in a huge takeout bag! The bag was so huge that one would think I ordered two combos! lol Before I left, the cashier actually decided to give me a drink on the house since it was my first time at Main Chick. Customer service right there! I chose the Sierra Mist. I saw a handful of younger customers sitting at the tables outside, so I decided to take my sandwich back to my car to eat. I believe those customers were from nearby Jordan High School, but I couldn't tell for sure. Either way, students there are pretty lucky to be attending classes close by so they can hang out at lunch or after school at Uptown Commons. When I opened the box, I was surprised to see a small container of sauce inside! I thought the sauce was 75 cents, but I guess the 75 cents was if I wanted a second container. No need for a second sauce; one was plenty enough! How was the sandwich? Even though it wasn't huge, it was fantastic! I can't remember how juicy the meat was because the abundance of sauce really took the sandwich to a whole another level! The sandwich already comes with some sauce, but it definitely wouldn't have tasted as good without the complimentary sauce. If I were hungrier, I definitely could have gone for another sandwich, but on my visit, that one sandwich alone satisfied me. I wish I had gotten the cashier's name because she definitely made all the difference. After a frustrating morning, I had to drive through heavy traffic on the streets and fight for a parking spot with other cars in the plaza. Main chick is probably the best hot fried chicken restaurants I've been to & this spot does it right. I just ordered a tender and leg quarter both at medium spice with lots of mc sauce. They were both cooked perfectly, tender juicy and full of flavor. The mc sauce really adds that balance and it was an amazing lunch. I'd definitely come back here again to try their other menu items. Spicy mommy, hot tamale! I am totally not a spicy chicken girl, but Main Chick Hot Chicken can remain my main chick forever! My partner was devastated after he discovered that Howlin' Rays wasn't open the day we wanted to get some and decided to try Main Chick. We were totally not disappointed, as we were hit with a juicy, thick slab of hot chicken on a fluffy bun decked with perfectly pickled veggies and pickles! The fries were thoroughly seasoned with the same spice that coated our chicken sandwich and was fried perfectly--not too greasy and crispy throughout the crinkly cut fry! Spicy! The hunt for the best chicken sandwich continues. Came to main chick because it's so close to home. I'll keep it short and sweet: I ordered the 3 piece tenders and fries with an extra quarter leg. Heat level on the tenders was mild. Omg they were so spicy! Lol but I'm also a sissy (I think Tapatio is hot lol) but even though it was spicy, the flavor, texture and quality was definitely worth the burn. Real chicken tenders. Soft, succulent, big, meaty pieces! The fries were well seasoned and fresh. No cold, over salted stuff over here. My quarter leg was bomb.com haha big piece. My phone didn't capture the quality that well because I went at night and the outdoor dining area is comfy and lit properly but not to snap photos. I got that quarter leg hot. And man it was hot. Still enjoyed it and I'm definitely coming back. The service? Well, I gave five stars. Check my other reviews. That extra star is for service. Great people happy to serve you. This is in a newer little plaza area in Long Beach. There is plenty of open, outdoor seating on bright, painted wood tables and benches. I ordered a mild #1 Combo, which comes with a chicken sandwich, fries, and one chicken tender. The sandwich was tasty and not too spicy, and the chicken tender was a decent size. Coleslaw was a fresh crunch that paired well with the fried chicken sandwich. Recommend getting the quarter leg combo!! Chicken was juicyyyyy! Id say it's pretty close to howlin rays chicken. Word was going around that Main Chick is THE chicken spot and wanted to try it after my coworker raved about it. It was located in an open-air mini vendor stall with two other vendors and wasn't too busy for a Monday evening. Make sure to check in on Yelp for 10% off your order! I got combo #2 since I didn't want the chicken sandwich and for $15 the portion was plenty and can feed 2 people that aren't super hungry. I got my tenders mild and it came piping hot with crispy crinkle-cut fries, their house dipping sauce, and 3 large tenders. Immediately after the first bite, I knew I will be back for more. The seasoning on the tender has a nice kick to it but also a bit sweet which I usually prefer. The fries took the experience up a notch too. The sauce was a great complement but wasn't necessary as the chicken was the star on its own. Okay, so Long Beach sure is getting a heck of a lot of new hot chicken places. Things definitely sort of kicked off with Jay Bird's and it all got more saturated since then. Because of that I wasn't expecting a whole lot but I can definitely say the chicken sandwich here ranked up with one of the best I've had--I got takeout and the food still tasted fresh 30 minutes later when I got home. Medium MC sandwich was just enjoyably spicy enough for me and I am usually pretty OK with decently spicy food. The amount of slaw on top was well proportioned and they didn't go overboard with the sauce which was nice (although they gave us a LOT of extra sauce cups for free). Also got a side of Mac n Cheese which was DELICIOUS - it was the creamy kind, and the flavor was pretty substantial. Some of the best hot chicken without having to go into downtown LA! I've been ordering ahead online typically 10 mins ahead of my ETA and it has either been hot, fresh and ready for me right on time, or at most I've had to wait 5 extra mins. My order is the Dark Meat Sandwich Combo - Mild (2 dark meat sandwiches + side of fries). I usually share with 1 other person as 1 sandwich and some fries is enough to feel satisfied and not overly full. I've tried their tenders before as well, but I would say the sandwich is definitely where it's at. The breading of the chicken has this delicious seasoning on it that sets it apart from other Nashville hot chicken places I've tried, their coleslaw is nice and light, and the pickle adds the perfect acidity and crunch to cut through the heartiness of the fried chicken and the bread. Their mild definitely has a kick to it - for me it's just enough spice where it enhances the flavor without overpowering my buds with spice. My only dissatisfaction with anything here is that their fries are a tad too salty. Here at the "commons" north side Long Beach. We visited Main Chick. Here's how it went. First of all the customer service here is TRASH af, no wonder Long Beach have such bad reputation. The food was burnt and over salted. We ordered: Combo #5: 2 leg quarter Fries Sauces 2 burnt fckn buns! To sum it all up, I kindly asked the cashier to replace the burnt buns and she clearly said that how they are made. She said that if we wanted new ones we would have to pay for it. Unbelievable!!!!! This place is in a small corner of a sort-of "food court" made of shipping containers with 3-4 other vendors, and covered outdoor seating (some of the other establishments have some indoor seating). On a Saturday around lunch time it was very quiet. There is no inside seating at Main Chick, just a tiny area for pick up, but I was the only one there, and I was picking up to go. The dark meat sandwich was good, nice flavor, and decent size, 4/5 stars. The white meat sandwich (at "hot" level, 4 of 5) was disappointing (3 of 5). It was one sad, skinny chicken finger, the bun was soft but tiny. Although it wasn't very juicy, flavor was quite good, despite 4/5 spice level ordered . I felt like I wolfed it down in 4-5 bites. If this is the standard, it's unsatisfying. My biggest complaint was that my $6.49 white meat sandwich was TINY and didn't feel satisfying; if you're hungry you're probably going to have to order 2 of them. Compared to other hot chicken places I've had sandwiches from, the white meat won't top my list, although I'd try the dark meat again. Other good points: 1. Crinkle cut fries were nicely dusted with spice (4/5) 2. Cole slaw was pretty good, tinge of sweet (4/5) 3. Wow! I'm a new regular at this place! The combo meals are so worth it if you're ordering for more than just yourself and the portions are perfect as well! I usually get the combo with 2 chicken sandwiches and fries, which is great for me and my boyfriend. The sandwiches look quite small at first glance but the slice of chicken in it is so huge that I promise it'll fill you up. The chicken sandwiches are so freaking delicious too! I get mild, which is the perfect spice levels for both of us and sometimes I enjoy pouring a bit of the sauce that comes with the fries over it too! I usually don't like crinkle fries because I find that they tend to be soggy, but each bite of a fry gives you that amazing crunch on the outside and the softness on the inside.
