This has been on our radar for some time, and we finally decided to do a early breakfast here. We were not disappointed! Finally, a place that serves biscuits and gravy that aren't salty as hell. It was ridiculously good, and I'll definitely be ordering my own plate next time. The veggie omelet, was amazing and I added a sausage patty just because I could. A solid old school diner. I will day it does look kind of divey on the outside, but don't let that keep you from going in. It is also Interesting that it has two separate entrances on opposite streets. Two separate dining areas as well. Be sure and check out both sides. Nothing fancy with a bit of nostalgia and family things hanging on the walls. Small staff. Everyone is friendly. Menu is breakfast and lunch. The breakfast skillets are very good. Very pleasant place. They were decorated for Halloween. The poor waitress was scared by one of the animated goblins. My sister and I stopped in after a doctor appointment. We've eaten here for years. As others have mentioned, it's an old mom and pop place. It is an old building. It has old people and old people decor. I don't have any problem with that. They also decorate for every holiday! Our kids love it. The food is good and pretty cheaply priced. They give large portion sizes, and also have breakfast all day. It is really good. Breakfast is usually my favorite thing to get here. The service seems like it is faster during the day than at night. If you go at night you will be waiting a little longer for your server to take your order/bring your food/bring your check. It's not a big deal unless you are in a really big hurry....in which case you probably should have gone with fast food! I've never had a bad experience here. Main Street Cafe has become a favorite place of mine to visit when returning home. It's cozy, and very Iowa - something refreshing to somebody who lives in Los Angeles. Also, I like to support local businesses. I can get a grilled cheese sandwich for $2.75, and it's $1 to tack on fries. Note: they always serve a BUNCH of fresh fries. Also, a piece of pie is just $2. Each time I ordered a piece of pecan pie I was served a huge delicious serving. When I went with my parents they ordered the hot roast beef sandwich plate for $6 - and the mashed potatoes were REAL! Note that there are two dining rooms in the restaurant. If you're a Halloween fan step in just to check out the crazy decorations they have on the Main Street entrance (the Pearl Street side is more reserved, and the booths are cozier). So this place is weird, but I love it. I felt odd as soon as I walked in. The place is ridiculously decorated and filled with old people. We were literally stared at by every patron as we walked to the booth we sat down at. After passing a guy with a handgun sticking out of his pocket and a couple people we later found out were employees, we found ourselves on the Main Street side of the Cafe (We had entered on Pearl Street). Ok, Iowa is an open carry state, I get it, but don't wear a wife beater, old jeans, and put your gun in your pocket...... I guess the employees here just wear their regular clothes? Or maybe some random customer decided to serve us and pretend he worked there....Either way he was nice and helpful. They serve breakfast all day, every day, which is awesome. I ordered eggs (over-easy), hash browns, bacon, and wheat toast. Oh my God. I hadn't had a breakfast like this in a very long time. This was amazing, real, home-cooked feeling breakfast. The entire plate was covered in hash browns, my bacon was crispy, toast was buttered but not overly-so, eggs were perfect. Seriously one of the best breakfasts I have ever had. When I got my check it was like $11. I thought there was no way that could be right....Well I was. I couldn't believe it. I would gladly pay $10/meal for a breakfast like this. Went here for the first time the other day, even though I've lived here my whole life! The food was great my Mom and I both had the skillet and really liked them, not greasy at all. Also had some sausage gravy with my toast and it was so good! My three year old had a huge pancake and loved it. Only complaint would be that the coffee was no good. This is a neat little cafe/diner. You could get a little lost in time in the place. It is a bit old school in a very good way. Basic menu. Pork Tenderloin was a featured item, so I tried it and the breading was corny and crispy... damn near as good as the meat it surrounded. The crinkle cut fries were plentiful and very crispy. Now... why four stars? Pies. That is why. About a dozen of them. I tried three. Hey... I love pie! Apple... rocked for the american version [I prefer the French version sans cinnamon]. My wife and I have been coming here with relative frequency for a few years now. Sometimes we venture out to other diners in the area, but somehow we always end up comparing them to Main St. Now don't get me wrong, the Main St. Cafe is as simple as it gets. Breakfast served all day, hot beef sandwiches, and free refills. The place is always packed for lunch. It's the most affordable meal in town. The service is always friendly ... especially as you become one of the regulars. Mashed potatoes are REAL ... not instant. And all around it's just good, wholesome, affordable food. I usually get the BLT or a Bacon Cheeseburger. And even more often I get bacon and eggs. We never walk out of there (the two of us) for more than $13 (including tax and tip) or so. I've been coming here for a long time and it's just good, inexpensive food. It's a family owned cafe that's been around for a long time. Service is good, though sometimes the servers seem a little overwhelmed when they get busy. Food may be all frozen, but it's tasty. Decor is really creepy. The moment you walk into this diner your hit with a really weird vibe. Over the top old decor. This place is straight up filled with old people and I know this is a family run business but come on. Really one of the few things I liked about this place was they had breakfast all day. Now onto the concerning issue I get my plate and I'm not going to lie it looked delicious until I saw several strands of HAIR in my plate. It was disgusting and very unappertizing, I quickly pointed it out to my server and she apologized and took it back at that point i should have gotten up and left but I didnt. The server brought me back that plate and the eggs on it were cold to the touch so they obviously didnt make a new skillet for me and all they did was remove the hair waited ten minutes and brought it back out. Then it gets worse the bill comes out to a grand total of $12.38 that is freaking ridiculous. There's hair in my food you didn't do anything about it and you dare charge me that much. Very disappointing for that much I could something much more delicious and healthy some where else. The server was very nice though. However that doesn't make me want to come back ever again. read more

I was in town on business, and was looking for a place close by to grab something to eat. Based on the Yelp reviews, I chose this place. As I sat down, I noticed the guy behind me was having the hamburger. It looked good, so I ordered it. When it arrived, it looked over cooked. And it was. I ordered the "deluxe", and it came with shredded lettuce, a large slice of onion, and tomato. The lettuce was piled on the plate covering the other condiments. The bun was stale and crumbly. The burger was over done. The fries were the frozen crinkle cut kind, and were unsalted. I'm not sure why this place got 4 stars. Maybe I should have order breakfast. read more

I drive though downtown Council Bluffs quite a bit and I passed this establishment all the time. Finally, I had a chance to stop in and eat. It was a weekend morning and it was very busy so the service was a little slow but that was probably due to the fact it was so busy. I ate breakfast and it was very good and the prices were very reasonable too. The menu is basic but full of the items we all love. I look forward to trying lunch there one day. This is the place for a down-home breakfast. We were staying in Omaha and made the quick drive over to the "Bluffs" to find a traditional American breakfast. Dine with the locals and if you want an extra slab of ham--that will be $0.56! The folk art in the dinning room and the bathroom (men's) will not disappoint and is worth the visit alone. read more
