My friend and I were visiting Baltimore for a conference and just happened to walk here from the hotel for lunch. The food was absolutely amazing and as soon as you walked in the smell of the food cooking inside was mouth-watering! I ordered the aushak as an appetizer. The ravioli noodles themselves were a tad tough, but the delicious filling and yogurt, mint, and beef sauce absolutely made up for it. I also ordered the lamb and chicken combination plate. The lamb and chicken were extremely flavorful and the bread was wonderfully textured. The dish also came with a yummy salad and some lovely sweet rice. Came in one day and everything was amazing, so the next day when trying to decide where to have lunch, it was an easy decision. Once again the food was just amazing, and really reasonable prices. Very good Afghani food. We ordered the Tandoori shrimp platter with baba ganoush and samosas. The baba ganoush was smoky and savoury. It could have been creamier. The samosas were deeply spiced and aromatic, though the ground meat inside was a bit overexecuted. The Tandoori shrimp were grilled, spiced, and well seasoned. They were smoky. The bite was crisp with a tender interior. Very nicely executed shrimp. All around a good Afghani meal that doesn't challenge the western palate to extensively. read more

My husband and I came to Baltimore to celebrate our first wedding anniversary. As a veteran who had deployed to Afghanistan, he had a craving for bowlani. He said this place's bowlani was just as good as overseas and he devoured both pieces. My vegetarian plate was delicious-especially the curried chickpeas and the sweet potatoes. We topped off the meal with the Afghan ice cream. It was perfect, and so filling. It felt like a home-cooked Afghan meal, but in a convenient eatery setting downtown. Wasn't able to get our food in time. Picked this place due to its proximity to Hippodrome. Met friends to grab a bite to eat before the show. We arrived about 35-40 minutes before our show. Friends' order came and then three groups after us received their food. Ran out of time to make it to the show. They forgot to cook our order, quickly cooked and plated it when they realized their mistake but at that point we weren't going to make it to show on time. This particular evening I enjoyed their Beef & Chicken Kabob combo and Cucumber Water so refreshing. The meat portions can be a little lite but, I guess they saving me from myself. I really enjoy the fact that everything is homemade and prepared freshly to order. I believe the halal chicken and beef are freshly grilled minutes before served and you can watch the Cook prepare your Naan flatbread minutes before serving. The rice is the best long grain full of tiny strips of carrots, golden raisins and cinnamon. The fresh vegs and the salad tossed with yogurt dressing. I do approved and fresh is the key. Sidebar: I was early for a play at Everyman's Theatre just one block away and a fellow Theater Goer suggested this place and I have been hooked ever since. I purchased food to go that date and ate it in the upper level of Everyman Theatre before my play started. Absolutely fantastic meal. Got the veggie platter and it was both HUGE and packed with flavor. Eggplant, squash, chickpeas, spinach, rice, and some amazing pita, with some kind of mint yogurt sauce on the side. Had a pot of the hot tea too which I really enjoyed. Food is 10/10! This was our first time having afghani food so no comment on authenticity but it tasted amazing. Chicken was moist and well seasoned. Veggie platter had a bunch of different flavors and the pumpkin was very good. Falafel was not dry although the hummus had an overwhelming tahini place. Wow, what a cool place! We ducked in trying to avoid the rain and we're so glad we did. The food here is incredible! The chicken was tender and delicious, but the appetizers are really where it's at. There's something so comforting about dipping bread into warm, aromatic side dishes on a cold and rainy day. I'd come back just for that! The excellent entree was just a spicy and wonderful bonus. Nice little restaurant in downtown Baltimore. I order more than I could eat just to sample more items. Had two different appetizers ( Pumpkin-Kadu & Eggplant) which were good but , I probably won't order them again . based off of the Yelp reviews i didn't think the two appetizers lived up to their hype. One of my favorite places near campus to grab lunch. Each day of the week they'll have a different special that they'll rotate through too. My favorite is the chicken tikki kabob. One thing i really like is the food here is not greasy. I like to think of it as a healthier alternative to halal food carts. The rice isn't slathered in grease but still very flavorful. The meats arent drenched in sauce but theyre still juicy and flavorful. They also give you a side of salad for the plate dishes and a piece of naan bread (use the green yogurt dip!) And dont forget to try the dry red seasoning, I'm not sure what it's called but it pairs really well on top of the salad, rice, or meats. read more

Of course, I went with the Chicken Kofti Combo because I like chowing down on both the chicken and cow at kabob places #greedy #diversity. When our food came out, my eyeballs immediately widened in outrage. HOW CAN ALL THIS FOOD BE $12...IT'S NOT POSSIBLE. 1 generous strip of kofti, clumps of tender chicken, a fresh side salad, a gigantic piece of naan, and addicting crack cocaine rice. Such a fantastic meal. Despite the fact that I had loaded up on food earlier that day at brunch, I ended up cleaning up just about the entire plate. Maiwand Grill earns a coveted 5 star from my perspective. The food here is awesome and the price is unbeatable. It may be a unfair comparison, but similar kabob places in the Northern Virginia area are priced way higher than Maiwand. Understandably the rent is higher in NoVA. During my short day trip to Baltimore, my friend had recommended this place. He stated the food was so good that he would sometimes frequent this establishment multiple times in a week. After taking a bite in my food, I understood the hype. I opted for the Chicken Kofti combo which comes in at $12. With this combo, you get 5 pieces of chicken, one skewer of ground beef, a side salad, half of a pita bread, and a good amount of rice. As I eluded to above, you get a lot of food for $12! Not only do you get a lot of food, but the food was very flavorful and spiced very well. Typically I don't care much about the salad, but the salad here was very fresh and the dressing accompanied the salad perfectly. The meat was juicy and tender; I personally preferred the chicken over the kofti here. I have had better kofti elsewhere, but this was at higher scale kabob sit-down restaurants. I think my favorite thing about this meal was the rice. I have had my fair share of kabob places and the rice here was flavorful and different from anything I ever tasted. Tldr... Superb food for an excellent price! As you can see from all their other reviews, I don't think it's possible to be disappointed by this place. If I am ever back in Baltimore- this will definitely be a place I have to revisit. Ultimately to sum up the review, Maiwand is so good I wished there was one in NoVA. read more

Holy Cow! The meat packs so much flavor I couldn't believe it. I had the chicken and lamb combo and it was amazing. Randomly looked for restaurants within walking distance from the hotel and came upon this place. There is a lot of dining space. Lots of booths and table top for 4. This place could easily be suitable for groups. You order at the counter and they bring your food to you. I was a little disappointed in them because I purposely chose the table with an empty plastic bottle left by a previous customer thinking that the employee would notice and clean the table. Unfortunately, they never cleaned it and the table had a few stains here and there. Despite this, i am still giving them, 3 stars (really 3.5), because of the food. I ordered lamb kebob and mango smoothie. I asked the employee if it was mango lassi and they were not sure. I assumed it would be mango lassi because of the type of food that they serve. I'm not sure where the owners are from but the food closely resembles food that I know of in NYC. The lamb was cooked medium. it was seasoned well and they gave enough pieces. The rice was good. One thing that I was not used to was the raisins. Its not bad. The salad was decent. It helped balance the dish but still felt like it was missing something. The bread was really crunchy. It should have been soft. They just let it cook too long. The bread should be more fluffy. The chutney sauce was good but watered down. The flavor was there however. Lastly, the mango lassi was better than I expected but the ratio between mango pulp and milk was off. They should add more pulp to bring out more of the mango flavor. Another thing to note was a fly had landed on me. Because of this i noticed that they do not have those fan blades by the door to try to keep the flies out. Just something for them to consider. Overall, despite the mixed review, I would still recommend this place and until I find another place that sells a better version of the mango lassi, this will be my go to place for now. read more

(There's a special for each day of the week) It comes with naan bread and rice which I thought were great. My friends got a variety of different things from kebab to just a few appetizers. If you're not in the mood for an entree and want to sample different things, I think two appetizers could actually be pretty filling. The interior was nice and the service was friendly. Inside it was spacious and bright. It's a good spot to grab a casual lunch or dinner. Order your food at the counter and they bring it to your table. I ordered the Malai Chicken Kabob which was chunks of chicken marinated in sour cream butter sauce, with ginger, garlic and fresh coriander leaves. The chicken was mild in flavor, so if you're not really into spice then this would be a good choice. The chicken was moist and tasted great with that spicy green sauce. The kabob was also served with rice, salad, pita and grilled onions. The rice was particularly good. I think it had cinnamon in it and also came with raisins inside. 3.5 stars I'm split. I really love Maiwand's meats but don't really like their sides. I wish I could just order the meat, but they only have combos. The Food: I tried the chicken and lamb kabobs, and they were tender and full of flavor. I could literally down plate fulls of them. However, the sides that came with the combo were just meh. My wife had the veggie platter. She really liked the rice. Although the pumpkin/squash mash in the veggie platter was too sweet for me. The Service: You order at the counter, and they give you a number on a stand. Then you pick a table, and they bring the food to you. I wasn't sure if we needed to bust our own dishes or not. It seemed some people did and others didn't. But overall, service didn't really impact our visit; we were just a bit confused as too what to do. Overall: Maiwand's kabobs are delicious. I would love to be able to come in and only order the meat since I don't want to pay for sides I'm not going to enjoy. I'm probably not going to be coming back very often because of the sides. This place is freaking amazing, so why do I give it only four stars? Because it's a touch expensive for what you get, but it doesn't detract from the awesome experience. You order up front and you choose numbered table and then you feast like a king. The rice: perfect balance of spices and flavorful without being overbearing. Also soft l, but not soggy. The bread: it's like crack and I would only allot myself a small bite at a time to savor the deliciousness. The chicken: fully spiced, super tender and not the least bit dry. What's bad about it? There were only four pieces. The lamb: lightly salted and somehow devoid of the typical gaminess and aftertaste you'd expect from this meat. So I pretty much cleaned my plate down to the last grain of rice. Will do it again once I get another paycheck. read more

I honestly order the hummus more than anything, it's paired w/ fresh hot naan style bread for dipping that's great. TIP: Order the hummus to-go to a larger portion & a full piece of hot bread. This place never disappoints - I eatten here for lunch at least once every two weeks or so for the past few months. I have had a variety of things on the menu, most of their lunch specials, the pumpkin appetizer, falafel and a handful of th their entrees. I personally have not had any of the wraps but colleagues have and they continue to go good back because their food is always on point. We were staying near the Orioles stadium which is only a few blocks in walking distance from this restaurant. We walked in,the place was super clean and smelled good with spices in the air. I ordered the shrimp kebab and my wife ordered the chicken kebab. They were both seasoned well and were part of entrées that included salad and naan. The entrée plates are generous the rice was delicious and the salad was crisp.I chose the balsamic vinegar dressing instead of the cream dressing. It came with a few roasted tomatoes and roasted onions which were great.The naan was warm & soft w some toughness to it.The cost for both entrées and two drinks was around @$34.
