We love Maiwand! This place is always poppin' when they're making fresh bread. The fresh bread is $4 a sheet and it's delicious. It also keeps well. You can freeze it, store it on the counter for days, or just eat it endlessly. I could eat it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You can buy freshly cut meat by the afghan butchers, huge ten pound bags of rice, dates, dark chocolate dates, every form a date, ice cream, almonds, and more. Much more. My MIL is bummed they don't have fresh produce, but there are places for that. It would be a one stop shop otherwise. Everyone is so nice here, we love this place. read more

Don't get the bread from here, the customers just come and grab it while it's still not wrapped! There was a customer grabbing bread from the front of the bakery while the bread is still stacked. I told them they should wait for someone and they can't just grab it while it's still exposed. They just went for it anyway and I told one of the staff members to help him but he looks like he didn't care and allowed the customer to grab it anyway. It's a shame because the bread smells so good but if random people are going to handle it then I'm not comfortable buying any from here. read more

People who work here have very kind hearts! I incidentally locked my car key in my car truck today. I called Geico who were supposed to send an emergency road service but after 2 hours of waiting they closed the ticket without anybody showing up, and then i kept calling Geico and they put me on hold forever. The staff from the store came to talk to me and everyone tried to help me and gave me ideas. It was getting dark and cold, they allowed me to sit and wait inside even when they are closing for the day already. They even offered me hot tea! If I could give zero stars, I would. Every time that I have gone to this afghan market, either the food was bad or expired. Recently, this morning, I went to Maiwand to exchange a goat cheese that I bought. I went to exchange it because it was expired. In hopes that I can receive a fresh goat cheese that isn't expired, I went to ask. Yet, the person in front refused to give me a fresher batch. I even showed him the tag that says that it was expired and yet he refused to exchange it. Furthermore, I explained this to my friends, asking what I should do. They explained that this is common with the store and to not go there anymore. They have explained to me that similar situations have happened to them countless of times. read more

This grocery store is NOT IT! The owner/man working at the register did not have a mask on today! Not around his neck, his chin, over his mouth, not anything. He was not only just behind the register, but was walking all over the store and talking to people and touching product without a mask on. Who knows how many shelves he's stocked without a mask and how much merchandise is out there that has his (potentially infectious) germs on it. We had stopped by just for some fresh bread, but didn't get any. We went to the counter where you get the bread and asked for some, but the man was on the phone and just pushed a piece of fresh bread in our direction. The bread didn't even have plastic wrap or a bag on it yet! What are we supposed to do - hold the bread itself in our hands and take it to the register? Also keep in mind that the man in the bread area did not have gloves on, so he was touching phones, papers, and bread all with the same dirty hands. This place is so unsanitary it's ridiculous. Despite this we have been coming here for years because we don't have anywhere else to get it. They never give us the meat they show us and hide bad cuts underneath. The last time, my mom told the guy that she didn't want the piece of meat he was cutting for her. When we was done he yelled at her saying she shouldn't try to talk to him while using the machine, he could cut himself even though she was trying to tell him she didn't want the meat he was cutting! The cashier is not trustworthy. Charges me $5 for naan even though its suppose to be $4. Whatever, maybe they upped the price cause of inflation. But, I even see the register ring up $4 per naan and $1 change for each. Even the lady who's behind me in line comes up to me outside the store and says she only paid $4 for each. I would avoid buying meat from this place. I asked them for goat meat and they gave me lamb meat. The first time I just threw away the meat. Since then every time I would re-confirm multiple times that it is goat meat and not lamb meat. They did it again a second time and when I went back to return it they blatantly refuse it. If you are going to Maiwand Market for meat, go someplace else. The butcher is not honest at all. When you ask for one section of meat and are willing to pay, the hide the bones underneath and charge you for horrible cuts. My family and I recently when there, asked for a shoulder cut only to have larger rib bones under the meat. We found out way too late when we got home. Now only half of what we brought home is usable. Make sure they pack what you want in front of you. They sell you meat like you are back in Afghanistan. Bread is good sometimes. 2 stars for the bread. There's a special bread on Sunday(forget the name). It was good the 1st couple of times. Later few times, asked twice to make sure that it's that bread. Was assured yes. Came home found out it wasn't. There seems to be an overt attempt to be "friendly-as if he/they're your childhood buddies'. However, they seem to not realize the line between customer service+professionalism + friendliness vs "buddy friendliness". e.g. When paying, a weird joke was made on your old photo on the credit card basically saying "you don't look like this photo anymore". And I'm thinking I'm not your drinking buddy man. Standing in front of meat section. There was no other customer waiting. The guy/guys in the meat section completely ignore me. The best location in Fremont to get freshly baked Afghan bread. I usually drop by on the weekends for pick up their fresh bread. It is hugely popular with the local Afghan families. They also sell meat and also middle eastern produce. Street parking can be difficult on the weekends but they do have their own parking lot behind the stores. read more

Just echoing the general consensus. Roughly three square feet of bread for $2. Exclamation. Exclamation. It's a great deal, especially if you get it when the bread's still warm and soft. It has a nice flavor to it, sort of like hummus. The other baked goods they have in the case aren't bad either. You go up to the counter and get a box to fill with them, and they charge you based off of the weight. Some items, like cream horns, are priced by how many you get. read more

It's well known that Maiwand Market sells awesome Afghan bread. If you show up late, the bread is all gone. If you show up early, there are crowds gathered for the bread. If you show up in between early and late, you don't get any fresh bread straight out of the oven. Yes, I've been in all 3 camps before, and really being late is the only one that sucks. When I buy the naan fresh and hot, I'm always tempted to eat half on the way home. I only end up eating a quarter, but these suckers are huge, so even a quarter is a huge meal. The only thing that would make the experience better is melted butter slathered on each bite. Then when I buy the naan pre-packaged later in the day, I generally nibble on a few bites, but most of it makes it way home. At home, we then cut it up into little squares and toast for a delicious naan with our Pakistani meals. And when I show up late, and there is no more bread, I cry all the way home. The naan is excellent and cheap ("so cheap!") and definitely hits the spot. The naan is so good that I've never tried any of the other things at the market, but when you have great Afghan bread in your life, there's no need for anything else. read more
