Was looking for some mantoo and this came up on my search. Fremont kabob has 3 different locations in the Bay Area and this was my first time at any of them. Service was friendly and efficient Mantoo is Afghan-style dumpling filled with ground beef, topped with tomato sauce and yogurt. The mantoo was decent but the tomato and yogurt sauce was too runny for me. Chopan kabob was tender but slightly over seasoned with salt. Came in Friday around 5 and it was not busy at all. Food was delicious and ambiance was really cozy. Service (5/5) was also attentive. Yogurt and cucumber dip (5/5): I loved this. We actually had to order another round of warm bread to finish this off because we enjoyed it so much. Qabuli Palow (5/5): I got it with lamb and the lamb did not have a gamey smell at all. The meat was tender and fall off the bone. The raisins also added a unique, sweet tone to the dish as well. The basmati rice was also well cooked and seasoned. Chicken Curry (4/5): The curry was so flavourful and the chicken was nice and tender. The curry was seasoned really nicely. I am more used to the spiciness of Indian curry, so this curry was a pleasant mellow surprise. It is not as thick as I am used to, but still delicious. Firini (5/5): I LOVE the texture! It was so soft and creamy! Perfect little palette cleanser after a big meal. I also really liked that it was not too sweet. The pistachio bits on the top added a complementary nutty taste too. (Forgot name) Sweet icecream-like dessert with vermicelli noodles (4/5): I have never had vermicelli noodles in a dessert before.. honestly, it was pretty good. Just went here for lunch and so happy to be back at the restaurant with my favorite bolani! The bolani is filled with a good amount of filling and the sauce is great. We also ordered the lamb kabob and chicken kabob. The lamb kabob was a little too fatty in my opinion but the chicken kabob was great. Food is good - kabobs, rice, and mantu are quite delicious here compared to other Afghan restaurants and freshly prepared. Service is solid - staff is always checking on you to see if you need anything. Restaurant is very nice and clean inside and they pay attention to detail on ambiance so it's a good place to take guests. They have regular tables and also Afghan style floor seating (skip the floor if you have back problems and want to dine in comfort lol). Portion sizes are a bit on the smaller side so keep that in mind when ordering for your group. read more

This Lamb Shank was fall of the bone goodness. It was so tender and flavorful. Only con is that Curry was a bit on the salty side. Other than that it was great. I was jealous on the Kabobs that came out though. They smelled so good coming fresh, hot off the fire. I was able to have try my son's Chopan Kabob (Lamb Chop), was a bit overdone for my liking but it was still tender and full in flavor from the spice rub. Service was a standard, nothing special. Food was ok. The only thing I like most was the spicy potato bolani and Dahl soup. The hummus was pretty good too although I have a bias for the richer thicker texture type (common in the Israeli hummus). The family thought the kabob and curry chicken were good too. Ambiance - nicely decorated and clean with an upper section for cozy seating on the ground if you like. The only reason I gave a lower rating was due to the service. It was extremely slow in serving the dishes considering we were there early and there were only two other tables (couples) in the restaurant. Even then, this woukdnt have been the reason for me to give a lower rating as I know how tough to run a business. The low rating was primarily due to the fact that they weren't honest and didn't inform me that the grilled eggplant entree I ordered was out of stock at all! I was waiting patiently the whole time for my order when the rest of the family member had their orders served to them and were almost done eating. It was then I had to get up to the counter to ask and found out my order was not available to my surprise! They claimed they told us when they served the other dishes to our table. Granted we were so engaged in conversations that we may not have caught it. But then it doesn't add up because if they had told me, I am sure they would ask if I would like to order an alternative dish. So I felt it was just a lie to make up for the lack of attention and notification here. He did state that they don't put a whole lot of salt in their cooking to begin with, which was exactly what I needed. One thing we appreciated was that they asked about the spice level for the bolani--mild, medium, or spicy. We got mild and medium, and both were delicious. The bolani came with yogurt and mint chutney, which was decent but not particularly standout. The restaurant is right next to Chat Bhavan, and the parking lot is small, so it can get a bit crowded at times. However, the staff was fantastic, and the seating arrangement was comfortable and pleasant for dining in. Overall, we would definitely come back to try more dishes. Really cute place! The interior looks very traditional and there's a special floor seating area as well. Outside, there is parking, however, it was pretty packed so we parked on the other side. The staff were very friendly and answered any questions we had about the food. Additionally, all of our dishes came out at the same time which is always a plus! We had the bolani with pumpkin and leek, these were amazing! It's almost like Chinese pancake but more thin. For entrees, we got the combo kabob (lamb and beef) and korma lamb. I personally loved the lamb much better, the meat was super tender and went great with the basmati rice. The kabob wasn't my favorite, it was incredibly dry and tough to chew. Fremont Afghan Kabob: consistent, meaty goodness. The Sultani Kabob (three skewers) plate is perfect for those who are indecisiveness or want a variety of skewers. I would recommend the classic lamb, beef, and chicken skewers if it's your first time. All of them are seasoned and cooked well (i.e., not dry). The mediterranean salad provides a bright and crunchy complement. You can also upgrade to Qabli rice (would recommend), which provides a nice sweetness from the raisins to balance the savory skewers. For appetizers, the Bolani Potato is solid, a little softer / fluffier than others I've had. The 'mild' still has a decent peppery kick. Pro-tip: Mix the provided yogurt with their green or red hot sauce for a spicy and tangy topping. Also recommend the House Dip, whose flavor I would describe as more of a garlicky yogurt dip than an eggplant dip. Still, it's a creamy, delectable spread that pairs well with the house bread or bolani. I don't think I'll ever stray from the skewers (which my rating is based on), but I did try some of the Korma Lamb - the lamb shank was tender as you would expect; however, I personally found the tomato sauce a little one-noted and too acidic. I'm sure this is a matter of personal taste, and given how much I enjoy the skewers, I have confidence that Fremont Kabob's other dishes will shine the same. read more

I've had almost all of their menu items such as lamb, chicken, chapli, and beef kabobs. I've also had all types of their bolani and it's been fantastic! Before i dive into the amazingness of this place, be warned that there are 2 places with almost identical addresses (and one is NOT the restaurant). The only difference being the last digit of the zipcode being 2 numbers apart. Anyways, once you get to the right place, be ready to enjoy a delish meal. I don't disagree with folks that say the food is a little pricey - but this is also not unreasonable considering you do get complimentary bread and the food is filling. We sat in their fun seating area with comfy cushions/pillows and enjoyed the complimentary bread with their spices. Then for the main meals, we got: 1. Potato Boulani - these potato pancakes are a joy and it's a big portion. We split among 4 people and it was PLENTY. It comes with yogurt (and you can ask for more) and it's a comfort food of green onions with shaved pancake pressed together 2. Mantoo Entree - these were yum but i would say you should go with the appetizer version of it next time so you can try more of their other entrees. These are well seasoned shredded beef dumplings with a type of tomato sauce on top. The entree came with about 12 or so dumplings if i recall correctly 3. Combination Kabob - we couldn't decide on chicken or lamb kabobs so we got the combination plate. I think both proteins were delish so I would probably do the same next time around. Ordered to go via online. I ordered the combo chicken and beef. This comes served with a cucumber salad, pickled potato/garbanzo, bread and basmati rice. The meats were very tender and was still hot when i brought it home. The rice was nice and fluffy and always has a great buttery smooth taste to it. The service when i picked up my food was fast. Tried this place again after a long time. I had previously gotten a few to go orders and this was my first time dining inside. It was busy and the service was little to non existent. I had to flag down people multiple times to get water (they gave us glasses and didn't fill them) and to place the order. It seemed like everyone who ordered food was waiting for their orders as well. Me and my friend sat for 50 minutes before our food came out. The chicken shami kebab (khoobideh) was okay. It tasted like there was too much cumin added to it. Ambiance was chaotic. There were groups of people with kids who were screaming and wilding out (hitting the wall with their knife; grabbing the drapes on the wall.. parents couldn't care to parent their kids). We ordered online (via UberEats) and picked up at the restaurant, which we realized was a dumb thing to do because of the $2-$4 markup per item. So if you're going to pick up anyway, you may as well call in your order or order when you're at the restaurant. As for the food, everything was well prepared and tasted good. The menu didn't have very specific descriptions of the dishes, so we were a little surprised by what we got with the Sabzi lamb. We didn't realize it was a lamb shank, but it was good. What we ordered: + Borani kadoo - they call this butternut pumpkin, which was a little confusing. It was darker orange than butternut squash or pumpkin, but it was pretty tasty. It's kinda sweet with a yogurt dressing. Goes really well with chicken. + Mantoo appetizer - these are meat filled dumplings covered in a tomato-y yogurt-y sauce. Was good, but the dumplings fell apart, so it was a little like a casserole. + Chicken kebab - comes with lots of fluffy basmati rice, 2 salads (chickpea & cucumber), and flat bread. Chicken was nicely seasoned but just slightly on the dry side. The flat bread was ok, but kinda dry and flavorless. + Sabzi lamb - this was described as spinach over lamb. My wife and I got in and no one from the service staff was offering a table, they didn't even pay attention to us. We have waited and only after we asked, they told us to seat at the tiny table even though there were two big tables available. And right after us another couple walked in and the man at the restaurant, probably the owner, offered them table immediately and at the bigger table. We are an Asian couple and another couple was middle eastern. IT WAS RACIST AS HELL!!! Then we have waited forever to get the menus, no one came, we asked the food runner, he heard us and ignored. When I asked him the second time, but with a higher tone, he finally brought the menus. We were ready to order and again no one came, so I had to ask if we could order. The waitress came and got our orders. The way she talks, looks at you was very angry and with an attitude. Our doogh was pretty bad, not as usual. They brought a spicy potato bolani, even we didn't ask for a spicy one, kabobs were cold and not fully cooked. I could not imagine, from the straightforward name of the restaurant and no frills strip mall storefront, what a cool place this is. I was working in the area and stopped in for lunch. I sat in the traditional low couch area. It was so comfortable. I loved the Afghan decor. So evocative. It reminded me that I'm lowkey obsessed with Afghanistan, the vibes are immaculate; great food, cool style, fine men. The meal started with delicious fresh homemade bread served piping hot. Hot green tea was subtle and fragrant with cardamom. I sampled a bit of hummus with the bread and it was delish, drizzled with fruity olive oil. The hot eggplant appetizer featured silky stewed eggplant in tomato sauce and creamy yogurt. I was so hungry, I wolfed it down. Shami kebab came next. The first bite had me rolling my eyes back in my head with pleasure. Crazy good, especially with the savory brown basmati rice. The plate came with a small cup of chopped cucumber salad. Hot sauces, red and green, were on the table. The experience was more like a five star level of happiness. But the issue I had was with how the food was presented; The bread was so good but no butter? With kebabs I like a well rounded meal, more akin to a thali or how they're usually served in Middle Eastern restaurants with a slew of accompaniments. The shami kebab plate was only rice and kebabs, small salad, no vegetables, not even a roasted tomato or onion like the Persians do. If you want yogurt sauce, hummus, dal, vegetables, you have to order an entire appetizer or entree to get them, you can't just get a bit to go with your meal. My wish would be they add a meal combo option that includes something more, like a little dal, veg, yogurt sauce, hummus, etc with the kebab. In the future I'll request the appetizer to be served at the same time as the kebab so I could have that as an accompaniment to the meat. read more

This is our go-to Afghani place. The food is so good here and it's a cute little place with an option for sitting closer to the floor, if you're feeling up to it. We ordered the pumpkin and potato bolani and the veggie korma e-lobeya. The food was so flavorful. They asked us if we wanted it mild, medium or spicy, which is a new thing for me in an Afghani restaurant.
