While the kababs and Qabili Pulau (the lamb was great!) were wonderful, my favorites are Mantoo and Potato Bolani. Service was good - we waited a bit more than is usual (for Westerners) for the food to come. Many large windows contribute to the relaxing ambiance. Highchair for the one year old. We ordered takeout tonight from Maiwand, and were really impressed. We ordered chapli, qabili palau, potato bolani, aushak (meatless), chicken kabob, shami kabob, and baklava. Our family has lived in Fremont for decades and this was one of the best value Afghan meals we've had since the demise of our favorite, Salang Pass. My SIL's go-to kabob places are closed on Monday, so this was our first time here. I'm mostly veg, and was very impressed with the aushak and bolani. Our party also reported excellent seasoning on the qabili palau. Word was the chapli was the best we'd had. Even the baklava was popular with our resident baklava skeptic. I've been out of the area for years, and haven't had Afghan food since I left. So glad that Maiwand Village is here, and can't wait to come back (try to get pics next time). read more

Interior is shiny gold, burl wood, and red upholstery, I can see fancy family gatherings and events happening here. It's totally unassuming from the outside next to a Taco Bell and check-cashing place that used to be a fast food restaurant. Chicken and Shami Kabob: Like other Afghan restaurants they cook to order and it'll take 40 minutes but it is so worth the wait, the meat is always tender and delicious. We ordered the potato Bolani, gyro and the combo kabob plate. The potato Bolani was so good! Man I love carbs! I could drink the green sauce they served with it. My beef and chicken kabob with rice was good, but I definitely preferred the chicken over the beef. Great tasting food, they take their time cooking and it's well worth the wait! Super super tender meat -'d interesting sides as part of the order. The shami kebab combo comes with a log of meat like koobideh, the bed of rice it rests on absorbs some of the grill flavor and is good paired. It comes with a side salad of tomatoes and onions and a sour potato and chickpea salad, they were great. The bread was a little hard but fine to eat, not sure if it's intended to be like this. I've lived in Newark for 4 years and I did not know this placed existed. Ive been looking for some good Afghan food that's close by and of course I yelped places and when this place popped up I wanted to see what it was about. Lo and behold this place is a hidden gem and their food is . Everything is cooked to perfection. When I placed my order yesterday I got lucky and actually got to meet and talk with the owner Wahida? I'm sorry I'm sure I butchered the spelling but great hospitality and overall just made me feel like family for that short conversation we had. But anyway if you have not tried their food what are you waiting for? I'm definitely coming back for more and yes quality of food is great especially they're cheap too. Wholeheartedly, if I could give this place negative stars, I would. We had the actual worst experience on the entire planet with Maiwand Village. The owner is rude and shady and makes holding large gatherings a nightmare. She also talks an awful lot of trash about her competition--at literally every chance she got. She'd badmouth Century House and tried saying bad things about their food and when we'd said we had liked their food and only had good experiences there, she said that her food was far better. Anyway, we tried holding a sizeable family party here a few weekends ago and the owner was incompetent and stubborn. The food was far too little for the amount of people we had and she tried to overcharge us by saying we had more than the amount of guests we said we had, when we, in fact, did not. She demanded we pay $5,000 CASH at the end of the night so that she wouldn't have to charge us tax, and when we'd said we did not carry that much and that we'd pay with card and we didn't mind paying the $400+ tax, she tried talking us out of it and ultimately said she'd only accept cash. She demanded we leave our license and outright said she didn't trust us when we said we'd come back tomorrow and pay the cash. Ultimately, we ended up paying all of the cash out of our pockets and then Zelle'd her $1,500 and said we'd come back tomorrow to give her the rest. After we came back the next day, she refused to give us a receipt. Very nightmarish experience and I would not recommend to anyone else. Especially not if you're Afghan, because there's far better food at your grandmother's house than this "restaurant". read more

Wanted to try a new Afghan kabob restaurant and ended up finding this place through Yelp. First of all, to order, head over to DoorDash as they actually have an online ordering system there. As far as DoorDash goes, they gave me a 30 min wait time which is pretty traditional. Even as I got there, the order was determined as ready...which, cool. I shouldn't have to wait. But as soon as I walked into the restaurant, there was already a problem in the sense no one was around to talk to about picking up food. There were no signs. It wasn't until I spotted a lady coming out from the kitchen towards the bathroom that I stopped her to ask where to pick up my food. Don't know if she was the manager but she had some sort of attitude as if I didn't know where to pick up food. Again, completely no signage anywhere. DoorDash gave me a pick up time of 2:05-2:10 PM. But despite getting there a bit later than 2:05 PM, the lady I talked to before rang a bell on the front desk. A second woman now came out to talk to me about my order, saying to give her 5 minutes. There was no one around, no other customers so I didn't quite understand what the hold up was. A second customer came in to put in an order and seemingly friends with the manager, the two started to chat it up while I was still waiting. You could hear the kitchen workers all chatting too leisurely as the pick up time was now past. At the end, it took me an extra 15 min to wait to get my food which was slightly annoying. A third worker who had my food finally came out, apologizing for the wait. He was pretty nice so I let it slide but as he wrapped the order he asked me how many items there were in which he only packed three when it should've been four. Since it was the baklava, it wasn't too long of a wait and I did eventually get my food. However, this was almost excessive since it wasn't like they lost my order. It felt like they just procrastinated and didn't care. Now, as far as the food goes, the garbanzo beans were pretty good though spicier than I'd like. The meat was alright though not the best as some of it was...soggy? Not sure if it was quickly thawed from frozen but it had a bit of a mushy texture as far as the lamb went. The chicken was good and so was the beef but compared to other places it was just alright. The bread was a bit on the harder side too. The potato bolani also seemed oddly soggy. The filling was good but it was a bit mushy too. Rice was really good as was the baklava. But overall, the food might've missed the bullseye just a bit. While this place is closer to my apartment, I'm not sure I'd frequent here since the service was quite a turnoff save for the last person who gave me my food since I think he gave me an extra piece of baklava. But if it's anything to work on for this restaurant, it's customer service and organization. read more

I actually had to call twice when we got there because the pickup instructions are very unclear. We did not get our food until past 7:20. I get that delays happen but that is way too long to wait for a phone order. There was an ongoing event when we got there, but it's not right to be like this to regular customers. If you can't manage to get your order out in time, maybe disclose it before taking phone orders. read more

Solid Afghan kabob meal that I've integrated into my rotation. They have about 5-6 tables to eat in, but it gets crowded quick (95% Afghan patrons). So I prefer calling in my order and picking it up. Plus when you get it to-go, they include this awesome garbanzo/potato salad that goes so well with the charred kabobs. For some reason, when you eat in, they don't include it, go figure... Chicken Kabobs (4.5*) are good. Bright orange in color and large hunks. It is breast meat so it is pretty lean, but to their credit, they char it without drying it out. The Afghans know how to grill, they take their time and don't rush anything. Beef Kabobs (3.5*) are decent. It is chunked smaller than the chicken for some reason, so it does give off a drier texture. I prefer the chicken here over the beef. Shami Kabobs (3.5*) are the grilled ground meat kabobs. They are nice and juicy which I love, but the garlic is a bit much for me (and I love garlic). Chopan (lamb chops/5*) is my go-to. Rich lamb meat just transcends when aggressively grilled. The marinade hums with the lamb and when paired with sumac dusted basmati rice and that tangy garbanzo/potato salad, is just one of my favorite go-to meals. I can do this once a week. I don't but I easily could. They also have a market with the same name, so don't confuse the two. This is just their prepared food outlet, which is a success for them. Heavy Afghan patronage is a plus, but how the flavors speak to me is where their legitimacy really stands. read more

I've held off this review for a long time because I wanted to keep them to myself... My friend who speaks Afgani Farsi brought us here and ordered a feast for the three of us. We mostly ate with our hands, my favorite! I really appreciate that they don't cater to American tastes/restaurant experience expectations. HUGE portions especially for the price, and especially for Bay Area. They do mainly takeout. - Like people nonstop stopping by to pick up food. They're friendly people but since it's mainly takeout perhaps they don't do as much table service as one may expect. However, to me, it seemed like they went out of their way to provide it. They came to check on us and refill our water several times. You do have to order and pay at the front counter. There are no bathrooms. read more

If u want fries then it's $5.99. It was good. Thin slices of beef gyro, some sauce, lettuce, and bit of tomato on a nice soft gyro bread. Chopan Kabob-steak cut lamb cooked over an open fire $11.95-lamb chops were tender and juicy. Comes with a slab of bread, some tomato/onion side, and a potato/garbanzo side. Leek boulanee-turnover bread filled w/ leek & spices, served with a side of yogurt sauce $6.99. It smelled great in the car and couldn't wait to get home. I was a bit disappointed because it wasn't crispy or spicy, and they didn't give me the yogurt sauce! I might go back, but not in any hurry. My parents took an out of town guest for food here last night. They were told dinner might take a bit longer so they offered some tea for the wait. They said sorry they will bring out sweets because the long wait. Long story short they waited almost 2 hours with no tea or sweets. This is embarrassing to them in front of their guest as well as this poor disappointing place called a restaurant. The food was gross and oily. What a waste, my father was still nice and gave the waiter a tip. These people disgrace the Afghan name.
