My friend grew up in Nova, and his favorite KBBQ is Makchang Dodook. He says it's the best for AYCE in terms of quality and price. I've never heard of this spot before, and you typically will not find me in Springfield. However, a few of us made lunch plans this past Good Friday to take advantage of the $29.99 AYCE weekday lunch pricing. We got three rounds of beef brisket (chadol), one thin & thick pork belly (samgyupsal) each, and half an order of large intestine (daechang). The chadol was a little too fatty than I'd like, but it was high quality and comparable to non-AYCE options like Meokja Meokja. I didn't love the thin samgyupsal as much, but the thick version was so meaty and juicy. The intestines were a fatty treat, and I was good with just a couple bites. We had to ask for ssamjang and sesame oil for sauces, which they were generous with giving. Our server was pretty attentive, but we thought it was weird that he cooked the thin samgyupsal and the beef brisket at the same time. As for sides, we asked for lots of them (sadly our corn cheese never came). The fermented soybean stew was strong, but a bit too salty at the end. The egg bomb was fluffy and delicious. They also have ramen (aka shin ramen) which we enjoyed by adding several pieces of chadol and letting it soak in there to get that deep meaty flavor. I enjoyed the kimchi throughout the meal, which was the perfect "not quite fresh, but still crunchy" texture. Overall, we ate to our heart's content. I definitely would be back for more chadol, thick samgypsal, and a bit of daechang in the future. The $30 pricing is a steal for the amount of food we got, but I'd hesitate to pay for the $40 dinner price. I don't eat enough at AYCE spots to get my money's worth, so I would rather spend that $40 at a non-AYCE spot for higher quality cuts like galbi and rib tips. read more

We came in really optimistic, and the start was strong. The banchan were excellent, especially the kimchi and pickled onions. Easily some of the best I've had in the area in a long time, and they set the bar high going into the meal. Once we got to the meat, though, it was a little underwhelming. The all you can eat selection was limited, and a lot of the flavors leaned sweet. We were hoping for more savory, classic Korean BBQ flavors. The sauces were fine, but nothing that really stood out. If we came back, we would definitely add on the ribeye or galbi instead of sticking strictly to the all you can eat option. Service was great and attentive, and the atmosphere is solid for the Springfield area. That said, our hood vent almost came off mid grill, which definitely took away from the experience. Came here on a Saturday around noon for lunch with a group of 8. We were seated in a table with two grills. Perfect for two groups of 4 per grill. It took a little bit of time to understand the menu, so I had to ask a wait staff. The basic AYCE option (Option A) is 29.99 for weekday lunch only and 39.99 for all other times. This isn't really specified on the laminated menu. For option A, you can choose two meats that you can have for all you can eat at a fixed price. Any other type of meat you order will cost $14.99 per serving (a la carte). If you are really ambitious, you can go for the Ultimate option, which is $84.99 per person. They have a price difference for adults vs kids up to 12. There is no Option B for AYCE which is confusing because there is A and B and Ultimate. You would think B would be something in between A and Ultimate. They also do a single dish option as well and serve pretty standard Korean foods. Getting to the BBQ portion, I tried their brisket, pork belly, marinated beef rib, and large intestine. I thought the thickness of the brisket was too thick and it took too long to grill. The marinated beef was not very tender and just overly sweet. The large intestine was chewy, fatty and very savory and would go well with soju. The side dishes are unlimited, and I thought that was nice. The egg bomb which is a standard for KBBQ nowadays was a bit dense than other places. I was not a fan of the oregano or parsley that they put on the top. The salad was quite uncomplimentary to the Korean BBQ. The dressing pretty much ruined the salad. It is like a sweet, western style dressing. I would have liked to have the spicy, sweet, tangy sauce on it or no dressing at all. Perhaps I should have asked for no dressing. At the end of the meal, they served a little yogurt drink to everyone. Final thoughts. While there are elements of a KBBQ restaurant at Makchang dodook, I think the workers were not too familiar of Korean style food. Many of the workers are just trained to do what they are told, but don't really understand the culture that well. No one really helped grill, there were some odd dressings and seasoning. I would recommend the marinated galbi and the rib eye steak. Of course you also have to get their daechang (large intestine)! They also have free ramen to order at any time . If you like intestine, recommend pork intestine over beef intestine for lesser fat and same texture. It includes pickled onion and radish - perfect acid to cut into fatty meats whether you eat it with lettuce wrap or with rice. The bean sprout and cold noodle need more seasoning. And I wish there's more options for small appetizers dishes. In terms of drinks, it only included fountain drinks. Wish they had hot tea option for cold days! Came here for dinner with my cousins. We opted for the AYCE option A, which was $39.99/person. We ordered several servings of brisket, thick pork belly, and garlic pork belly. All of the meats tasted fresh. For garlic lovers, definitely try the garlic pork belly. This was really tasty - thick cut pork belly with a garlic puree paste. I was really impressed with the banchan options here. We ordered everything just to try and it was unlimited. My favorite banchans were the spicy beansprouts, pickled radish, corn cheese, spicy rice cake, steamed egg, soybean soup and tofu soup. Super delicious and seasoned welly. All of it complimented the meats and made the meal taste even better. They also offer free ramen, which I did not know until after we finished our meal. The service was great. Come hungry, especially if you're going to do one of the all you can eat options. This place has really good food from main dishes to side dishes (panchan). We have tried a couple of times and have switched from all you can eat to one of the set menus. We have yet to finish all the food in the set menu! We used to love this place and it's still good, but not great. First off our service provider, Josh was excellent and he deserves a raise. Josh was accommodating and listen to what it is that we needed and was quick and was able to keep up with the conversation to make us feel welcomed. We are avid Korean barbecue so we know what it is that we want and the different qualities of meat and what Korean barbecues can offer. With this before the changes the last couple of months it was better priced and better quality for what you paid for with option a. Now in order to get high end meat you have to pay additionally some of the additions being $15.99 to add onto your choice A meal. This makes the all you can eat really expensive if you prefer premium or quality meat. There is no more all you can drink option however you can pay $89.99 for a half off prices of wine. This was something that we really liked in the old version but they no longer can do that due to law. The greatest thing at this a AYCE is the shrimp size, the Ramen noodles, the pork, and the cheesy corn. They do not have an additional buffet in which you can get sauces or kimchi as the kimchi is brought to you in a small dish. The tables are small and intimate, and the food comes quickly, and if you would like your server to barbecue for you you can and if you don't just inform them. All in all when I'm in this area I do like to come to this place, but maybe we will be looking for other Korean barbecues due to the price and what you're getting for and all you can eat. read more

We came early on a Saturday night for dinner, place was not busy yet so our server was very attentive and it didn't take long to get our orders. We did the all you can eat option, have to say their LA galbi was the best out of all the things we ordered. Very flavorful, everything else was bland like it wasn't marinated long enough. Side dishes were limited and didn't have the usual we normally get at other places. I had to pay extra to get the steamed egg. That by the way was nasty. The cheese on there was gross and when I spooned into the egg, it was not fluffy, it was almost well done and the color of the egg mixture was dark greenish. It's expired eggs, something was off. The soup that comes with the side, you can only order it once. High priced items like LA galbi and Angus rib eye steak, you can get only once per person. Overall it's not bad, very expensive. One of my favorite food is 대창 (daechang) so I was surprised to hear there was an unlimited kbbq spot that offered it. I came here on a Saturday with a couple people and had a pretty good time. We were under the impression that we were paying the discounted price but realized they only offer it during lunch on weekdays but that was completely our fault. It seems like a lot of the servers don't know any Korean which is totally fine but your restaurant is literally in Korean. To cut me off mid-sentence while I'm ordering to say "I don't know Korean so can you say it in English" when all I said was "MAKCHANG" in Korean aka the name of your establishment.. yeah that was a little rude. She also forgot a bunch of things we asked for and I'd be more understanding if it was busy but we were one out of five tables in the entire restaurant. Great KBBQ place. I went with my mom and 1 teenage boy. We decided to get a set meal b/c there was no way my mom & I would make it worth the price. The downside is that you don't get the ramen. This places specializes in some offal cuts but our set meal didn't include those. My kid doesn't like that but I do like the offal. Sides were plentiful and good and the place looks very new. The meat quality was good but the overall experience makes our family and friends not want to come back. Keeping it short, it felt like the server couldn't wait for us to leave. We were only on our third plate of meat and he was already asking us if we were full every time he came back and kept offering half servings.
