Very cute place - I had the pork sandwich, it was good. I sat in the kitchen, very New York- like.

All the NOMS. If you try nothing else, get the cold noodles. Heaven in a bowl. The curry was delicious too. I crave the food here regularly.

Really wanted to love this place. Cool retail shop up front, hidden Cambodian/Taiwanese locale out back, intimate patio...all the makings of the perfect "hidden" gem. But the patio was half empty and they sat us in the empty kitchen which was freezing (I asked to adjust the air con later on and they would not...even though we were the only party eating in the kitchen). The fried chicken was good. The pork bao and fried squid were just ok, nothing special. The yellow beef curry was not good. I give the owners credit for trying a new concept, but in the end it felt more style than substance. read more

We went there based on Andrew Zimmern's recommendation on his show The Zimmern's list. We didn't make any reservations and showed up on a Monday night. Although there were tables that seat 4 people, and we are a party of 2, the hostess did not place us there and said it will be a wait time of an hour. I asked for the bar counter, and she eventually placed us on the second floor at the side counter, which is fine. By the time we are done with our dinner, no one showed up at those empty tables of 4 yet. Anyway, we ordered the leek buns, which is pretty good. The bone marrow over rice dish is very spicy, so be warned. I also ordered the chicken dumplings that never came, so I cancelled it. The area is not too safe with many panhandlers, so be careful. But I think it's turning around with other hip modern restaurants around. It's more hype than what it's worth though. read more

Based on the rest of the glowing reviews on this page, I seem to be an odd duck out. I think the concept of Maketto is creative enough. The service, ambience, and interior design are all great, and I thought the menu of cocktails at the cafe was interesting. However, I was less enthused by the food. The hybrid flavor seemed confused to me. For instance, there was a lot happening in the eggplant (yogurt + fried sticks + Chinese flavored ground meat) and it didn't really go together for me as someone who grew up in Asian cuisine. Also the notion of a $6 pork bun served on a fancy plate that is no different than the one you grab freshly steamed for $0.50 from the Asian supermarket boggles the mind. read more

This place is a sweet shoe store, clothing store, bar, and they turn into a top scale bakery with awesome coffee. Man... if only there was also a super duper cool restaurant here too. After living in the area and mistakenly thinking this was a clothing store; I finally realized that this location was the D.C. Famous maketto, and I was not disappointed! My wife and I visited on restaurant week, and could not have been more impressed. We started with a few cocktails and some pork bao- which in my opinion was the perfect ratio of meat (read a lot ) although my wife thought it was a bit much. We then moved on to the wagyu short ribs which came with a sauce that really made the dish, the rib themselves- off the bone of course were cooked to perfection with a good sear all the way thru. However, all the food paled in comparison to the fried chicken. Unlike anything I have ever eaten, crispy and slightly sweet and makes you wonder why chicken would ever be made any other way. Huge portion but I somehow managed to eat it almost singelhandley. The portions were excellent for all the food, and maketto has clearly lived up to the hype. Best food on h street. read more

Excellent!!!!!! From the outside, doesn't look like much, once inside though, it is an airy, professionally designed. I loved the flavors. The Taiwanese Fried Chicken and Oysters on Egg Omelet was very tasty. I loved the Wok Fried Noodles, but I can't handle hot spicy food so I avoided the dish after one bit. All in all, highly recommend this place for everything: food, service, and ambiance. It is a little pricey, but worth it! read more

Loved the place and the vibe! Very friendly and nice staff. The place feels like it's in Brooklyn - very funky. The front is a shop, although the products were only for men. The restaurant is small but nicely planned out. We were sitting inside but the outside area looks very cool. I wonder what they'll be doing with it when it gets colder. Food: Loved it! We had wagyu beef tartar, which the waitress asked if we liked it hot and I usually don't have any issues with spicy food, but this was way too spicy even for me, so be aware. Otherwise, it was very very good. Then we ordered tamarind salad and a whole fish curry - both excellent! Bar: Wasn't impressed with their cocktails. I had been to other places and the same drinks we ordered tasted much better elsewhere, so something to improve. read more

We went on date night and had an amazing dining experience. We sat right in front of the kitchen and ordered by what looked most appetizing on its way to other tables. This place is awesome although I'm not sure I'm cool enough to come here :) Arrived around 715pm on a Saturday night. Wait time for two was 1-1.5 hours, which allowed us to grab a couple drinks from the bar upstairs. We were seated back by the kitchen, which was a lot of fun to watch. The food was great - the fried chicken and whole fish was plenty of food for two people. We'll definitely be back again to try the other amazing looking dishes. read more

Post modern modernism is the best way to explain this really hip, steering toward young professionals. See what I did there. It's a voltronesqe colab of bar/restaurant/coffeehouse/clothing store that totally works. I've been on a tea kick and hang out in side listening to the music or zoning out with a laptop or book. My only complaint is with the modern minimalism come no room for comfy chairs. But that not the look they are going for. Or zening out in the patio up or down stairs gives you a nice calm place to go. read more

I had the beef noodles. It was pretty good. The spice level was great and I liked the sauce and the texture of the flat noodles. They tasted fresh. We got a weird (to me) appetizer drie chef in soy sauce with shrimps inside - wasn't a huge fan. read more

Eh I literally signed up for Yelp again so I could warn other people about this place. We've been twice, both times kinda disastrous. The first time was last January -- their heat wasn't working or something, and it was 0 degrees outside. They literally handed out cups of boiling water for you to hold so your hands wouldn't go numb. Like -- at that point close or offer insane discounts, right? We went back tonight, though, to get the fried chicken mentioned in 40 eats. I have the utmost respect for that list, so I'm sure this dish is *usually* amazing. Our chicken was so cloyingly sweet, though, that it tasted like fried chicken doused in simple syrup. There was no spice to it at all. Literally struggled to get through it, which sucks when you've shelled out like ... $30 for two pieces of chicken. We also got cocktails, soft shelled crab and bao: crab drowned by hoisin (also SO sweet), cocktails mediocre, bao amazing. If you go, just get a beer and bao. You'll save $80 and won't feel like you need to brush the sugar off your teeth afterwards. read more

I came here last night with my nieces and my bf and his daughter - total of 6 people. I called ahead after making reservations for 5 and having to change it to 6. The gentleman who took my request was really nice and able to accommodate us. I arrived with my three nieces about 30 min early and I was told table isn't ready yet and we can go hang at the bar if we want. I inquired if we could get seated outside when our time came up and the hostess told us that dinner was not being served our there. I settled on waiting at the bar with the girls and ordered some non alcoholic drinks. We were also able to order a few small plates since we were getting hungry once my bf and his daughter arrived. We were seated I think very close to our 830 reservation. The gentleman who I am assuming was the manager was nice enough to transfer our food order to our table which was upstairs. So this is where the mixup with the service starts. We were seated at a table at the top of the stairs which was not an issue. Although the other half of the restaurant was empty and remained so for the most part of the night with maybe one or two tables being used there. Again I don't know their system so I didn't ask about being seated there. The waiter greeted us enthusiastically and asked if we had been there before...our answer was no. I told him about the small plates we ordered and the "manager" knew we were upstairs. As we looked to order more food from the menu, I inquired about the all day menu to which the reply was oh you can get that downstairs. I reminded him that we just ordered a few dishes that were being brought up and he returned a few min later to say that for us bc I guess we were special we could order from that menu as well. After leaving us with the all day and dinner menus and leaving us thoroughly confused, he did not appear to take our order for another 5 min. When he did arrive, and as we gave our order which for 6 people (granted four are pre-teens and/or teenagers), he left to go get a notepad and came back to us to write it all down. We placed our order which he explained would come at a certain pace. My bf ordered a whiskey for a drink but since the one he wanted wasn't available, the waiter offered to bring a menu which never came. He did bring a whiskey on the house to make up for it. Soooo the point of the story is that food was great to mind blowing delicious - some dishes better than others but the service was just so off and confusing, I can't even focus on telling you what was good. Although I will...in just a bit! But one last story about service, after we ate my bf and I decided to go for a smoke break which we were allowed to do outside upstairs...super nice of them but I assume bc it wasn't busy. When we looked downstairs, the outside tables were indeed seated and people were enjoying their meals just fine. I'm not sure if the host meant to say those tables were reserved which is totally fine or if we could only order off their all day menu- which frankly I would have done to sit outside vs upstairs where it was hot and uncomfortable. Again point here is that the service and confusion about which menus we could order or not order from completely distracted me from writing about the food. So now on to the food...the crispy chicken wings - a must have - we had two orders; shrimp dumplings ok; the chicken lo mein was surprisingly great and I'm usually not a fan but ordered bc the girls wanted; also ordered a veggie one which was good too but not as great as the chicken. The crispy dumplings with beef - mind blown! The lamb spicy noodles were good but I was too full to enjoy so my bf took that home. I also had the cauliflower which again was just amazing. I wish we had space to order the fried chicken but my bf opted for lamb noodles. Food def great and worth returning for...I just wish the restaurant wasn't such a mystery as to where and when we can be seated and what menus we can order from. I'll give it four stars bc food is amazing and I would come back with just my bf and sit at the bar and eat there instead. read more

Incredible. Using the same materials, they can make a difference. I am never a fan of fried food, but their fried chicken was so good that I always remember the flavor. Their Bao are also very good, flavors are well balanced and the outside is very soft. This is a reliable restaurant and a go-to Chinese restaurant for me. read more

What is not to love about Maketto. It's clean, creative and exactly what I want when I'm looking for a nice restaurant, a quick coffee, a perfect date spot or a late night drink. The space itself is open and quirky. I love that there are many places to find a seat and it certainly doesn't feel like you're in DC when you visit here. I am obsessed with Maketto. Being a Taiwanese, I had to check out this place. Stopped by for lunch. The space is nice, clean, bright, and open. At first glance I was a little lost cause I wasn't sure what part is the restaurant and which is the cafe. I ended up on the second floor, greeted by some friendly staff. Their lunch menu features only a few items. I ordered the Cambodian sandwich and the pork bao. The sandwich is very similar to a bahmi. The pork was flavorful. The pickle vegg added the right acidic touch. The bread was the right texture. The bao was good as well. A little different than what I expected but it makes sense since it is a taiwanese/Cambodian fusion. I also had a latte which I think was the best latte I've had in DC thus far. I will be back to try the more extensive dinner menu. read more

Excellent Cambodian sandwich with big pieces of juicy & fatty pork, combined with the perfect southeast Asian spices. Truly a mouth-watering meal. Was here last sunday for the dimsum brunch and this is definitely a hidden gem.. You must absolutely order the green curry, it was spectacular, I felt like I was transported to the far east. Also loved the pork buns.. Wasn't too fond of the pork or shrimp pancakes, however there are many other options to choose from. One of the few places where they have many kombucha flavors.. It's fine. If the fried chicken is one of their best dishes, I'm definitely not super impressed. It's not bad, but it's not worth a repeat. Maybe their dim sum (which is sadly only sever on Sunday) would have been better. I would, however, get the egg custard cream pies again. Those were delicious. read more
