I had the salmon bowl with brown rice and brussel sprouts (my fave) and while everything was good I felt the was not enough flavor in the dish and needed to add low sodium soy sauce and sriracha to spice it up. Never has an issue with this place. The food is always on point ! We enjoy the salmon bowl, edamame, the Brussels sprouts are delicioso, & the tide roll is my favorite. Hi so me and my sister was trying to decide On what we wanted to eat and finally came to the decision to try Maki Fresh in Cahaba Village this an Asian establishment. Upon entering the restaurant we was greeted by Amber with a smile the menus was located at the register and they also had a small menu board with their specials. The restaurant appeared to be clean, and quiet. Amber had great menu knowledge. I ordered the salmon bowl, blossom roll and fruit seasonal salad. The bowl was tasty and it had a barbecue type of sauce which I just needed a little extra which Amber gave us a side of sauce and then it was perfect for me. The blossom roll was delicious it consists of salmon, cream cheese, apple and arugula. The fruit salad was different but good. The menu is vegan friendly. The drinks are self serve with coke products and they also have tea sweet and unsweet also passion fruit green tea. Overall I had wonderful meal and I will return. They also have a kids menu. Maki Fresh is fantastic! I always get the Ahi Tuna Sashimi and a Kirin. I notice a lot of people also enjoying the Maki sliders or 'minis' as they call them. I'd say this place is worth a visit. Reasonable prices, nice location, tasty and fresh food, fast casual atmosphere where you can sit comfortably and enjoy your meal. Sushi is good, the bowls/meals are good. Give it a shot. You can also just order some takeout, and some is already prepared to grab and walk out if you want real fast. read more

I really like this place and wish I live closer to it. I had the tuna dish. The fish tasted fresh and big chunk. The fried coconut = yum! I would ask for the sauce on the side next time them. It's too salty and too much for my liking. But overall, it's a great alternative for a quick lunch instead of going to a fast food places. read more

I have had some good experiences at Maki Fresh back when it first opened. I was less than impressed by my most recent experience. The young man who rang up my food was very nice. I noticed that most of the FOH staff looked like high schoolers (nothing wrong with that, necessarily, but it makes me wonder if Maki Fresh is cutting costs at the expense of quality). I got my usual order, The Vulcan and a California roll since I'm a big eater. Both were so overwhelmingly salty without being flavorful. I'm not sure how the kitchen managed that. Also, the rice-to-filling ratio was too high, which is an amateur mistake. The manager was very nice and came around to greet me, so I have to say that the restaurant seems to be well-run, but does not put out a quality product. The inspiration seems to have drifted from Japanese-inspired to becoming an insult to Asian fusion. Service was 4 stars. Food was 1 star. In the spirit of being fair, Maki Fresh does have one of those really awesome Coke "Freestyle" fountains, which is a treat. read more

I enjoyed my first visit to maki fresh. I had the crunch crunch roll(panko shrimp, avocado, cucumber, and maki spicy sauce. It was ok. I was disappointed they did not have unagi (eel) rolls. The roll was fresh and came out fast, just not super special. However, I have a new favorite which are the fried tempura green beans. They were crispy and fresh. Decided to try this place for lunch today. Always go to Newk's and Nothing but Noodles and manage to skip over this place. I ordered the Tokyo Bowl and the cashier guy was nice enough to suggest the Lite Bowl Combo which is the lunch portion and comes with a drink. Total came to $6.48 - very reasonable! The lunch portion was more than enough to fill me up! I chose brown rice and it was mixed with pieces of steak, chicken, baby tomato halves, corn, shredded carrots, and cilantro. Very flavorful and the rice was not dry at all! I'm thinking they used teriyaki sauce but not sure. Very tasty and will definitely go back and try some of the rolls next time! read more

The sushi was really good, but the lady at the cash register didn't seem to like me. I feel like she was making fun of how broke I am because I thought I was going to come up short. I didn't expect what I ordered to cost as much as it did, but I was trying to get everything together. I'm a big fan. This is owned by the same people as Jinsei, but is a more "fast casual" type atmosphere. Where Jinsei is expensive and pretentious, Maki-Fresh is quick, easy and always delicious. I know this is out of the box for a sushi place, but the tempura onion rings are amazingly light & topped with spicy mayo & at $2.95, they can't be beat. Yum :) Met Mom for lunch and she'd never eaten at Make Fresh! We ordered a few items so she could taste a little of everthing: Chop salad with tuna, Makidoma roll, and tempura green beans. The salad was a big portion for the two of us--and they have healthy, nutritional items in it. The Makidoma was delicious! Even better than I expected--I love spicy and it was right up my alley. I use to come here all the time, but I haven't been here in 2 years because Nori is my go to, and honestly last time I was in there the RUDE cashier changed my card two times for a $17 meal.. not cool, but the manager was very nice and helpful about straightening it up though! Today I was craving some sushi, and Nori was closed for MLK Day, so I settled for Maki Fresh. I placed a to go order for Crunch Crunch Roll and a side house salad. The sushi was delicious (as always), but the salad was well... nasty. It had the weirdest musty/moldy flavor, but somehow still looked fresh. All of the salad had this taste the cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce, and shredded carrots. I have no clue what could have happened for this salad to be like that especially when it's still beautiful and fresh looking, also I assumed the salad came with the ginger dressing lol old times (which is delicious), but I got some vinaigrette instead. I will still be back for the sushi, but next time I'll get the fried green beans instead of a salad. read more

OH MY GOODNESS. So, I just returned from a japanese restaurant in Upper West Side Manhattan. When they brought out my miso soup, I recognized that not only was it in the exact same bowl they give you at Maki Fresh, the soup also tasted shockingly similar. The sushi rolls were also of comparable quality. I've eaten at Maki many times for lunch, and for the price, what you get is incredible, and the sushi quality rivals fancy restaurants in New York City. The crunch roll is my favorite and the dipping sauce is heavenly. The way Maki Fresh is set up though, it's very difficult to eat with more than 4 people, so definitely reserve it for two-person lunch date. I've been a customer at Maki Fresh for a good while (probably 3 years) because their food is always good. It really is. This isn't a review dissing the quality of the food but the quantity. I bought a salmon salad today, which I have had a good 15 times since I have started eating there and the portion they gave me was so not worth the usual $12. I received probably half of what I used to get and the salmon filet was nearly half of what they used to serve. It tasted great, don't get me wrong but paying the same amount for almost half the size is obnoxious. I used to love Maki Fresh. However, recently in the previous times I have been back, the experience has been not good. The sushi here has gotten more and more expensive and also, the portions have become smaller and smaller. It is hard to sit with more than four people as it is a tiny restaurant. The sushi is very average and they make you pay for spicy sauce which I think is ridiculous. Really upset because I used to love coming to this lunch spot. But it has gotten worse and worse recently. I had a friend who recently got horrible food poisoning here and a week later, this location received a bad health score (food inspection) for that of a sushi restaurant. read more

I went to Maki Fresh last night to get sushi to go. I had been several times before and it was always very fast. Last night they were packed and there was a 25 - 30 minute wait on all orders. They were also out of white sushi rice. Although it was a little frustrating to wait so long, the manager was very apologetic and gave me a free drink while I waited and a coupon for a free entree for my next visit. Several of the customers were frustrated, but the staff handled it with grace. The sushi was good (though my order was slightly different than what I had requested). I'm always please by the freshness and quality of the food. Hopefully next time I go they won't be quite so slammed! read more
