top to bottom: onion rings, crispy brussels, miso soup w wonton squares, and veggie roll.

Recently tried this place for the first time.... then went back again the next day for round two. my partner and I are vegetarian so we opted for the veggie roll, crispy brussels, miso soup, and onion rings. By far the best thing was the cripsy brussels. i would go back every day just for those because they are the best brussels ive ever had! i included a picture of the full takeout meal from our 2nd visit, but we devoured most of it before i remembered to take it :P

Excellent fast-food sushi and rice bowls make for super satisfying and super healthy meals! My kids love this place, which really makes me happy that they have such sophisticated palates and that Maki Fresh serves up such delicious food! Sushi is always super fresh and expertly prepared. The bowls make me feel like I'm eating SO healthy! Lots of fresh veggies and delicious sauces and always your choice of brown or white rice. It's also super fast!

I ordered the Grilled Salmon Bowl with extra sauce and was thoroughly surprised as this was my first time here. It did not disappoint! Very fresh, good portion size, and I cleaned my plate (except for all the carrots). Would recommend for a nice healthy meal.

So, I wanted a nearby, quick sushi experience. My husband doesn't prefer cream cheese in his rolls, but he was otherwise occupied tonight. Maki Fresh it is. I browsed on Yelp before heading that way. I entered the restaurant, and only one table of people was sitting. Another to-go order had just been placed and she was waiting. They were very patient with me while I perused the menu. I placed my order of the Tide Roll and Green Beans (tempura style), and then ran to the restroom while I waited. On walking to the back, the restaurant had a very cluttered vibe. It looked like they were in the middle of stuff...paperwork on the counters, just not like you would want to be if you're open for business. That was a bit strange. Bathroom was satisfactorily clean and stocked. I came back out and waited a bit more. My food was ready in a timely manner, and I headed 1/2 mile home. When I pulled out the to-go boxes, the sushi looked really weird, which is why I initially snapped a pic. It tasted delicious, though!!! The sushi pieces were enormous so each piece was a two-biter, but the taste would definitely have me ordering it again. The tempura style green beans were a little on the heavier side with a roll that was also fried, but they were really good, too. The sauces made it. The sauce that came with the sushi was sweet and delish. The sauce that came with the green beans was a Siracha mayo style sauce. Overall, a little expensive for a roll and some green beans, a little bit of a weird store front, but delish sushi that is convenient and close.

Good. Quick. Healthy. This place offers decently priced healthy options. I've eaten here quite a few times, but I usually call in and order for days when I am on the move. The restaurant is small, but they are pretty quick to bring out food. The portions are not the largest and ingredients are pretty lean, so its great for lunch on a work day. I rarely get the afternoon grogginess after eating here. The hibachi steak bowl is my go-to. Today I ordered the Maki Steak bowl to-go. Pretty good. Nothing to rave about but still a solid healthy meal.

Steak bowl and Tuna bowl (WHAT I GOT TODAY!)

Super disappointed today. I've been here before and I used to love getting the steak bowl. It was full of fresh ingredients. I opened the box today and had 3 small tomatoes, 3 slices of bell pepper, and a few chopped up cucumber. If I wanted to get a steak fried rice I would have gone elsewhere or made it at home. I wish they told me they didn't have the ingredients to make it instead of mixing it up and trying to make it look like they did. I feel ripped off. Won't be coming back because they've lost my trust. (Pictured next to it is the tuna bowl - which is what the food usually looks like.)

I love sushi, and Maki Fresh just has a more casual vibe than other sushi restaurants. I actually prefer rather simple sushi than all the fancy stuff I can't pronounce! This place is perfect for a low-key lunch while you shop Cahaba Village. My one suggestion? Go AFTER you have done your clothes shopping so you can still fit into the sizes you want, and BEFORE you get your groceries from Whole Foods. It's just too expensive to shop there on an empty stomach.

    Asian BBQ Sandwich

This was my first time ordering from this place. I ordered online and their online ordering is through GrubHub. The restaurant has enough space for a few small groups of people and there is some outdoor seating as well. It's open inside and moderately noisy. The staff was friendly. I ordered the Asian BBQ sandwich which is shredded short ribs w/Asian bbq sauce, brioche bun, Brussels slaw, and spicy maki sauce. With this sandwich you can choose chips or a side and I chose the Crispy Brussels tossed with teriyaki sauce .....EVERYTHING was yummy and fresh! I really don't know if I will ever choose another side because the Crispy Brussels were so good. I could have used a little more meat on the sandwich but i may just ask for that when I'm feeling greedy.

Great service. The cashier was very helpful in helping me order. I haven't been here in over 4 years. I ordered the Happy Bowl minus the rice and substituted it for crispy brussel sprouts. The overall taste of the bowl is amazing but I'd definitely only eat it brussel sprouts because it was perfect just as that. The picture doesn't do it justice.

Yeah! Used the handy phone to unearth this month old sushi spot. Definitely thought it was a chain - had that very well put together feel and heckofa graphic designer, but doing an internet search, it looks like this is the only one! There's a pay yourself station with sushi in the front, so if you're in a hurry, you can swipe your card and go. This is set up similar to a quickie burrito joint - go through line and pay at the front. Brightly lit, modern and extra friendly, too. If you're looking for authentic, where there are lots of Japanese workers, and kimono paraphernalia, you won't find it here. Americanized and targeted to those ok with the selection of rolls and rice bowls. Props to their friendly service, and a tasty and quick meal to boot! Go forth, Birmingham! I'm waiting on the Atlanta location!

Current Charcoal Grill is…read morethe first restaurant I've been to in years that still understands and executes on everything that makes eating out enjoyable. The service is *excellent* with a capital "E." We ate at the bar, and the staff were friendly, attentive, and extremely knowledgeable about every single aspect of the restaurant. They have tried everything on the menu themselves. They can describe any one of the imported liquors up on the wall. These are real deal professionals who illustrate just how important the people in a restaurant's front truly are. The food? Delicious. It's a wild grab bag of East Asian fare - Chinese, Japanese, Thai - and it's all done extremely well. The portions are small, which is good, since you'll want to try half a dozen things on Current's very deliberately thought-out menu. The Peking Duck is some of the best I've had. The cocktails are also excellent, with my favorite being a delicious, earthy combination of coconut, lime, and pandan. It's like an extremely upscale tiki drink. I cannot recommend this place enough. Absolutely perfect. 5 stars.

We went for the "favorites" menu which a $65/person was an absolute steal. You get two starters, dumplings and cured red snapper is what was offered. Two entrees, the bo ssam and banana leaf wrapped redfish, and one dessert, the miso tart. Everything was quite good and more than enough food. The dessert was a real winner. I thought about it days after. Looking forward to going back.

And of course they had me at poke bowls. It's one of my top 5 things to eat, honestly. But I ordered a Buddha bowl because it's almost the same thing and I felt a little lazy to DIY (not to mention, the Buddha bowl looked tantalizing!) They have other veg options, but I set my sights on that bowl as soon as the friendly counter guy suggested it. It's overloaded with goodness--avocado, deliciously marinated tofu, edamame (yes, it's a protein-rich bowl), tomatoes, shredded carrots, diced cucumbers, greens and more. You're literally devouring the rainbow here, friends. For drinks, they have a modest but decent selection of beer, wine (a decent bubbly in a can!) and sake in addition to soft drinks. The place is so beautiful (and spotlessly clean) with plants dangling from the ceiling and beautiful murals throughout. If I lived in the neighborhood, I'd be here all the time.

My drink order was taken (water) and my server, who answered all of my questions, was very patient and pleasant. For my appetizer, I ordered the spring rolls. They were freshly made and came out hot and crispy. I enjoyed them and would order them again. Now the main course. I opted for the spicy Himalayan chicken, medium heat. I love spicy food, and I thought I was doing the right thing by ordering the medium level. However, it was very spicy! I did notice however, that the longer it sat, the level evened out some. Still, on my next visit, I will try the mild level to compare. The dish was delicious and very flavorful. The white rice added just the right amount of coolness to the chicken and veggies. Upon leaving, I ordered the drunken noodles with chicken in mild. I'm not sure if it's because it's a totally different flavor profile, but the mild has very little spicy. I just can't believe it's that much difference between the mild and medium levels. The drunken noodles were just okay, in my opinion. There was not a lot of juice, spice not flavor in this dish. On my next visit, I will stick with the Himalayan chicken and order it in mild just to test out my theory. The workers were very friendly and came by to check on me and made small talk with all of their customers, including me. I enjoyed my visit and look forward to returning again
