Visiting from out of town and stopped by this market during my extended stay on the Big Island. Pros: 1. Super convenient location if you're nearby. 2. Carries all the essentials, plus some fun local snacks worth trying. 3. Clean and well-organized layout. Cons: 1. Prices are on the higher side. If you're staying for a while and have a Costco membership, I'd recommend stocking up there for better value. 2. Customer service isn't particularly warm--but it's a grocery store, so I didn't expect much more than the basics. 3. Limited options for non-dairy or gluten-free shoppers, which could be a downside for those with dietary restrictions. Overall, it was a solid first local market experience. I probably wouldn't return unless it was out of convenience, mainly due to pricing. That said, I do appreciate having it close by for quick grab-and-go items. read more

WARNING!!!!! This place is the worst in big island by far 9.00 for a 6 pk of soda, bread 6.00 and up freeze burns on ice cream, food left until end of the day cooking under hot lamps. This place should be shut down by the FDA for violating every health code not to mention what employees get paid. Registers don't change what the item says so check your receipt before you leave . Better yet STAY AWAY!!!!!!!!!!! Drive to Waimea instead and enjoy the ride , you'll still save money even after the drive. read more

They Jack up the prices so hign I paid almost double, I would have paid had I of driven to Hilo. AVOID this OVERPRICED trap. The products are not fresh just this side of expiration. Shop at your own risk. read more

Why does the Foodland Corp let the honokaa malama market misrepresent the "Malama " brand, maybe just a guess, the refrigeration and store overhaul is something that they probably want to be done with, I am paying more for the "Malama " brand I should have cold drinks and food properly chilled food is why I am going to the "store" and paying a little extra, honokaa malama market brings in 200000 + every month from a community of elderly and children, warm meat and ice-cream, ? On our way back from Waipio Valley Lookout, Malama Market looked promising as everything else seemed dead in the area. We were starving from all the off-roading activity! This is a regular grocery chain but with a Hawaiian twist. I was looking for sandwiches to go but the bf found prepared POKE! I hadn't had poke before so I was a little suspicious. Hmm....a tub of poke for $5 wasn't so bad, we took 2. Then as we were browsing towards the front, we saw a hot food station.....they had spam & rice rolls, wrapped with seaweed! OMG that thing looked soooo good! We took one of those. Then we sat in the jeep and took our first bite of the poke....AMAZING! Actually pretty darn good prepared from a grocery store. The spam & rice roll....tasted as good as it looked. Since this is a chain and you happen to stumble upon one....be sure to check it out! This place is a safe bet, especially if there aren't any restaurants in the area. read more

It's the problem of buying bread and taking it home to find mold. It's buying meat and it turns brown in 1 day. It's buying produce that rots overnight. Don't get me started on the fish that looks like it's spoiled sitting staring at you when you walk past. The ice cream containers covered in ice. The list can go on... Malama wants to charge insane prices but under deliver on quality. Being the only grocery store in town, I rather drive to Waimea in flood warning and thick fog for groceries. I remember when the Kaneshiro family owned this grocery store and prices were fair and the selection was nice. read more

I think this supermarket is awesome! It has good selections, they have lots of organic, local groceries and goods. I enjoy going there!

This place is always like finding an oasis in the desert. I wind up here after doing something fun in that neck of the woods and always come out with some new thing I never saw before. Some of the items have seen better times, but at least the ownership is putting different items on the shelves for us to try out. I don't know what some of the one-star reviewers are thinking, like this is a mainland Safeway or something. It's another 20 minutes to Waimea, and prices are no better there. What they have in spades is LIQUOR! You can get messed up in Honokaa on something you actually like to drink. Always a fun stop. read more

I go to this store at least once a week if not more. Yes the prices might be a little higher but that's only because it comes from Mainland and is shipped to our islands and every store except for Costco has cheaper prices we live in a small town if I want a little cheaper prices I can drive another 20 minutes into another town. Customer service is always great the restrooms are available for customers and already clean, parking is not always the best because it is a small parking lot. read more

So being this is the only grocery store in Honokaa ... SO DISAPPOINTING! Everything is extremely over priced. The worst is the produce! You come to a small Hawaii town n you find rotten mainland produce. Ridiculous. Practically the only fresh grown options are bananas & sprouts. They very rarely have organic produce. I think once I saw a bag of organic apples. Strawberries are from Los Angeles and always poor quality (BTW -there are strawberry farms 15 minutes up the road in kamuela) seems like the owners and management are way to money hungry when I'm sure they must loose big bucks in all there unsold items. Hawaii stores should have local options! Hope new owners take over soon! read more

Well a very cute store yes. But growing up in Honokaa Town myself I'm very saddened to see the prices they have to pay now. The Kaneshiro family ran it they kept the prices down because they actually cared about feeding our small town. I'm just bummed a BIG COMPANY FOODLAND WOULD COME INTO A SMALL TOWN AND NAME IT MALAMA MARKET AND PRICE THINGS SO HIGH TO GOOD PEOPLE OFF WHO ARE RAISING THEIR FAMILIES IN A TOWN WHOS MAJOR EMPLOYER WAS THE SUGAR PLANTATION. Well that shut down a few years ago and people there are fighting to make ends meet. Very sad FOODLAND. Find some heart and make a big difference in this amazing untouch town. So adrorable. Please stop ruining this beautiful town. MALAMA MEANS TO TAK CARE. Follow through with this please. I would be more than happy to talk to Someone regarding this. Considering how relatively isolated Honoka'a is, I was stoked to find this market after an adventure out of Waipio Valley. It's a small-medium sized market and has all the basics and then some. There's poke, veggies, fruit, pre-made food section with bentos, musubi, and even salad. Very convenient and there's parking both in the lot or on the road. The staff is very nice and I'll definitely be back. read more

Being that this grocery store is the only one in HONOKAA sometimes you don't have a choice but to shop here unless you wanna drive 25 minutes fight for a parking space...1st of all you pull in and park and you have very sketchy people HANGING out in the parking lot ...and with crime going up in Honokaa I worry that they might break into my car while I'm shopping... than you go into the store and everything is so tight the isles are made for 1 person and if that person is looking for something you have no choice but to wait til they are done or turn your wagon around and go all the way around...you can't trust the meat section looks nice in showcase but bring it home and it turns brown..I've purchased a lot of things that ended up being thrown away because it was spoiled...prices are a little high but I'm ok with that...and I love Mele being that she's the last person I see after my frustrating shopping I leave Malama market smiling...there are other friendly employees but don't know their names... I suggest keep an eye outside your parking lot and your isles.. read more

Have no consideration for the community they serve as they have electricity at there warehouse but choose to run a mobile generator on the container all night to save money. It is loud and disturbs the community, and has kept me and other neighbors up all night. Thanks for being inconsiderate!!! read more

I grew up here knowing my local grocery as TKS and I loved the owners and staff, they were the best. Everything used to be arranged in a manner that made sense. When Mr. Kaneshiro died I was really sad to see the place go but his wife deserves to retire. I thought Malama Market would be an okay grocer and they are. The set up is a little out of order and could be better. The hot food station has some decent food but I have to admit they don't have all the amazing snacks I used to pick up. They do give more variety with brands on all the food which I really like. All in all they are pretty darn good but everyone can improve. read more
