This review is in regards to how Malama Kapolei really treats their customer. This experience took place on 12/31/20. Just in case you don't know Malama Kapolei is located on a steep incline. I go into Malama Kapolei to buy spicy poke and lemonade after work. As I return to my car and check my phone to check my messages their shopping cart rolls down while in my car and damages my passenger side front fender and part of my door. Startled by what happened and damages caused to my personal vehicle. I go to speak to an older security guard lady asking who to speak to in regards to this matter. She apologizes and says "yeah I have to help the boys grab shopping carts" I ask is there cameras? She tells me No. Trust me how can Malama be so irresponsible to not have cameras. Do they not care about damage to customers vehicles, theft, or anything that takes place on their property. Every staff inside tells me oh sorry I can't help you only store Manager Willy only can help you. One worker tells me he will be in on New Years day in the morning. I visit 6:30am next day and no store manager Willy. Another worker tells me he will be in on Monday January 4th. Monday rolls around and I speak with him and he basically refers me to their insurance. Their insurance First Insurance contacts me. Worst insurance I've ever had to speak with just going through the motion just to seem like they care. Maybe I just ended up speaking to a terrible insurance agent. First Insurance is a joke. I literally had to follow up with them every single time because they would not keep me updated on what's going on. Pretty much left me hanging. Worst insurance I've had to deal with TERRIBLE. Just wanted to clarify on their so called investigation. Which to me is a sick joke. So they believe making sure shopping carts are collected every 15 minutes is a reasonable expectation. That's the most ridiculous BS I've ever heard. You don't think anything can happen within those 15 minutes. What a joke.. You ever wonder why Walmart and Costco has Cart associates who just collect shopping carts. Because they make sure shopping carts are collected ALL THE TIME so that this kind of nonsense and irresponsibility doesn't happen. They actually care enough about their customers and their property while on their premises. Malama you as a company did a solid disregard to me as a customer as well as other customers by not having cameras installed. To sum it all up Malama super market Kapolei could care less about you. If your vehicle gets damaged on their property by their property (shopping cart) they won't do nothing. Crazy part is I was parked and their cart rolled down and crashed into my car WHILE I WAS IN MY CAR. Not my fault but yet their insurance could care less. Now I have to pay my insurance deductible for their mistake. Malama Management IF YOUR WORKERS WERE ACTUALLY RESPONSIBLE AND PICKED UP SHOPPING CARTS ALL THE TIME THIS SITUATION COULD OF BEEN AVOIDED.I did nothing wrong. You think their workers working that day would admit to screwing up. Of course they would lie to not jeopardize their job. If you actually care about your customers actually invest in cameras as well. How can you say you care about your customers when you don't have cameras in your parking lot looking out for your customers safety and their personal property. If you had cameras installed it would of proven you damaged my vehicle. Plain and simple. Now because of your irresponsibility and lack of concern I'm paying for your mistake. I love this little market and how conveniently located it is to our home. The staff is very friendly, Poke is delicious, desserts are excellent. I like how they refrigerate even the bottles of wine for those who want our drink chilled when getting home. We did have an bad experience once with the fried chicken, the chicken had been way over cooked and completely dried out. No meat at all and just crunch. I think it may have been in the window for a while. Other than that I really love this store. The coffee place connected has some really tasty drinks as well! read more

Okay I go to this place 2-3x's a day when I'm visiting home. I grew up literally just a 5 minute walk from here when I think we'd call it the Pantty? Back in the 90's my brother and I would use our lunch money to buy candy from this place, but we were banned by our parents because there were no Stop lights and it was dangerous crossing the street. Fast forward 20 yrs later and WOW! It's a little mini upscale grocery/deli/liquor store in one! I love it it! There shrimp kimchee poke is better than Tamura and I love their mussel poke too. I go home to visit about 3 weeks and every morning I walk her and spend about 40 bucks. Then I go back later on just because it has everything. Here's low down: Deli- Nice hot breakfast. Lunch is awesome with ala kings, pasteles, chicken and etc...they switch it up. Poke - several kines of fresh poke, fish, shrimp, mussels..nice variety and Tasty too!! Liquor area- Well needless to say I think they carry more options than foods..lol Desserts- Oh man, their butter mochi is Da BOMB!! We bout over 15 of these in the past 3 weeks.. they taste similar to Paula Deans ' Ooey gooey butter bars, but Better!! They have a variety of pies and cakes and they taste soo fresh and good. They also carry rotisserie Huli Huli chicken.. Ok, it may not be like the ones they sell down Bellows side, but it is dang good and I wonder why other stores don't try to sell this. They will soon!..lol Basically it's your go too place for everything you may need, if you don't feel like being in a crowded area like walmart and it's easy, small and fast!. My parents say it's expensive, and it probably is, but when your on vacation and I want to have that nostalgic feeling, it's worth every Penny!! lol I think I spend more here than I do shopping when I'm on vacation. The women there are soo nice and recognized us, but then again when you at 7am, then back around 1pm and every night around 8pm..well they are bound to know you.. We take walks as our exercise to see the view and treat ourselves to snacks here before heading home. It's so beautiful walking downhill seeing the wonderful view of downtown and ocean. Back in the days I could just look out our back porch, but these days there's too much homes blocking our view. This place has most of the things that I need and it's within walking distance from home! I have gotten some grub from here and I should have taken pictures but I was hungry and nothing was going to stop me from feeding my facehole lol. I got the okinawan sweet potato tray. It was 3.97 for 5 pieces. Not too bad, I've seen more expensive places. They have Poke here! A limited selection but good choices. I don't know if the fish is farm raised or wild caught. Some days the fish tastes pretty fresh while other days you can tell it was previously frozen. Most of the time I don't even care. Am I hungry? Yes. Is it edible? Yes. (Aaand that's that lol) The water seems to always be on special. Since I am a whale, I get 2 1.5L water bottles when I venture off downhill from home. They're usually 99 cents :) The staff is so friendly and helpful. They let me use the restroom. My bladder and I thank them and are ever so grateful! They take cash or card and there is a decent amount of parking. Overall things are a bit pricier than you'd find down the hill or elsewhere but this really is such a convenient place to have a market. They do close kinda early but that's alright :) ALSO! There is a coffee shop connected to the market and there is wifi there. YAAASSS! I am pretty sure I will be going back tomorrow..maybe even later today! read more

Conveniently located on Makakilo Drive, Malama Market surprised me by by offering so much more than the average convenience store, but I guess it's much more than that as they have a deli and fresh fruits/veggies. I was a bit grouchy going in but the cashier was sincerely kind to me and cheered me up LOL. They even gave me $10 in quarters on a Saturday night - tried to ask a cashier at Longs an hour earlier but she said their policy is to give $2 max- so the quarters were much appreciated!! Convenience is key and this is as convenient as you can get! I do believe Malama to be owned by Foodland, so a lot of things seem similar in the ads. The prices might be a little higher but that's b/c it's a convenience store, you're saving money not having to drive down the hill and waste gas. Hot food, deli, poke counter, Ted's pies, baked goodies, and everything else you can imagine to be in a market, they've got it. Staff is ALWAYS friendly and helpful. read more

We come here almost everyday. I absolutely love the poke here. It always seems to be fresh. It's kind of like foodland but not as big. So they don't carry EVERYTHING. But they are very convenient for everyone that lives in makakilo or surrounding area. Plus you don't need to drive too far for some groceries. This place is usually well kept. Sometimes the employees need a bit better customer service. Especially on the hot foods and seafood area. Who wants to eat food from grouchy, negative vibe person that is serving your food to you. When you get feed negativity, it tends to spread from one person to the next..Not me. But besides that. This place is very convenient. They also have a coffee bean and tea store connected to it. Since we live in upper Makakilo, it is so convenient to pop into Malama Market as they have anything you could ever need - household supplies, canned food, dairy, fresh vegetables and fruit (especially the delicious Sunrise Papayas from Kauai), meats and cheeses, fish, snacks, sodas, beer/wine/distilled spirits, regular bread items, and the best cakes/pies/cookies/bakery breads, in addition to made up sandwiches & musubi, and sushi, etc. with prepared food items to take home. If this wasn't enough reason to go to Malama Market, they also have the kindest and most congenial clerks working there. They greet you with Aloha when you enter, and are available for questions while you shop, and give you a Mahalo when you leave. We couldn't do without Malama Market in our neighborhood. Gotta love the local convenience store. This place just makes life easier. Baby is asleep in the car and we don't want to wake him up to go to long lines in Walmart to get a bottle of wine after work on a Saturday night. Malama to the rescue! An easy one stop shop for snacks, some groceries, drinks and candy. This place has all the good stuff. Their deli area is pretty bomb too. We love going to Samantha there as she is always so friendly and helpful. The poke is good here, love their spicy ahi. They also make some mean salt and vinegar pork rinds. The best! They have a variety of wines and drinks. Also they have great things to make fancy platters with to go alongside that wine. Also...the ice cream! They have plenty of different kinds to choose from. Yep this place has everything we need. If I ever got trapped in here during a hurricane I wouldn't be mad about it. First off, I'm from Makakilo (41 years) and those of us who can remember the rough period, and transition from sleepy little "The Pantry" to "The Handi-Pantry" can appreciate this area getting used again (for good.) Many years ago, that small building also housed a little laundromat, a little donut shop, a hair salon (no lie!) and gift shop. However, all the modern bustling activity of a large, sprawling and ever-expanding community full of people on the go, the downside is.......... ONE OF THE MOST DANGEROUS PARKING LOTS I'VE EVER SEEN!!! I don't know how many times my car has almost been hit by people backing out without even bothering to look. Then you get the wannabe Nascar drivers flying through to go to the gas station. That said, prices and selection are to be expected of a "convenience" type market. I just wish something could be done about that parking lot (obviously, speed bumps at the top of the hill don't help!) before someone -a child possibly- gets hurt. I would go more often if I wasn't for that dangerous parking lot! read more

Not a huge supermarket like Safeway or Foodland but the items they stock does just fine...I always thought of Malama Market as a convenience store on steroids. I love Malama Market! I normally stop here for breakfast as it is a pretty quick off/on the freeway spot. Malama Market is a sister company to Foodland, so most of the brands they carry are similar. This convenience store is fairly small, but in the morning they feature fried rice, eggs, and a variety of cooked meats to BYO (build your own) breakfast bento. I love stopping here for scrambled eggs, fried rice, and Portuguese sausage. It is a bargain, coming in at 3.99! The parking lot is tricky, as you can enter on the gas station side, but only exit on the Gentle Dental side. If you are coming down the hill from Makakilo, you will need to make a left into the driveway at the light before otherwise you'll miss it. I frequent Malama Market because it's near my house and convenient. It's not so much a convenience store, nor a full sized grocery store either but it does the job. For a small shop, they have a wide selection of different beers, wines and hard liquor. There's a vegetable/fruit section, meat/dairy, frozen foods and a great deli. The prices are a little higher, but in my opinion even lower or about the same as Safeway down the hill. I like that if I forgot to buy something, I can just go a little ways down the hill in Makakilo to get it, rather than going all the way into Kapolei. The parking lot can get hectic at times, but I just go during the non busy hours (e.g. after work, before football games, etc.) The deli is pretty awesome and impressive even though it is small. They, in my opinion, have the best spicy ahi poke I've ever tried! The deli also has great prepared meals from fancy sides such as cous cous, steamed asparagus, and Boar's Head meats to local favorites such as pork guisantes, lau lau, beef stew and even pasteles. My favorite thing to grab on the go when I'm hungry is their fried chicken and steak fries. I love this little store on the hill! It is the savior when I need a last minute ingredient and don't want to drive all the way down the hill into Kapolei or especially when I need a nice fresh loaf of french bread...theirs is the softest and yummiest I've ever tasted! It doesn't have everything like a huge supermarket but it has the basic needs....ice, bentos & spam musubi's for my kid who forgot to remind me I needed to pack him a home lunch for a field trip, cakes, cupcakes and pies for a quick pick up to take to a party & beer & poke for the hubby. Right next door you can get your coffee fix at Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf and you can fill up your gas tank at the Aloha Gas station...oh, and a BOH ATM machine! The only draw back is that it can get pretty congested in the parking lot, but in my opinion just a minor negative....not a big deal...I LOVE MALAMA MARKET! read more

Since this place is a doorstep away (not literally) from my home it is super convenient when I'm too tired to go to Longs or Safeway after work. The cashiers are normally nice. The hot foods are usually good. It's has all the emergency necessities that I might need. Extra points for being co-located with Coffee Bean and Aloha Gas. Another point for having Red Box movie rentals. I love hooking up to Coffee Beans wifi when shopping :-) of course always with a coffee, tea, or Danish purchase. It's not cheap obviously most convenience Mom and Pop places aren't; but they often have great sales announced in the mailed home flyers...the big soda bottles are usually good deals. But I digress. My co-workers would tell me they were running to the market to pick up a quick lunch & I just figured they were buying gas station pre-packaged food. Boy was I surprised when I finally was desperate (hungry) enough to go buy what I thought would be a twinkie from a gas station! Malama Market is affiliated with the Foodland chain of stores. It's a mini sized grocery store with all the essentials & a decent deli. Poke, salads, sandwiches, musubis, hot prepackaged local style breakfasts....my favorite is the asian style potato salad. $5.99 a pound. It's also attached to Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf. Soooo the parking is a little tight.....Just keep your window rolled down so you can hear the other cars & back out slowly! It sure beats fighting the crazy backed up traffic and tough parking in Kapolei town. read more

Day 011/365 Yelp Challenge I hate their parking lot. It is very dangerous, narrow, on a slope, and the best time to go would be very early in the morning, on my way to work. I believe the parking lot is also shared with the Gentle Dental office? You should've seen this lot on the morning of the great tsunami, the other year. It was crammed from one end to the other with cars. I think some cars were parked partly on the curbs. Luckily, they accepted returns, with receipts from that day. This may be the closest location to my home that sells Ted's Bakery pies, besides the Longs CVS at the bottom of the hill. I'm not sure why they don't accept the Foodland Maikai card? Aren't they affiliated with Foodland? I might shop here more often, early in the morning, if they accepted he Maikai card. read more

What's for dinner? Funny you should ask! I ask myself that question every day! I now find the deli at Malama Market to be one really good dependable go-to for a simple selection of great poke. Edamame, shoyu ahi poke, tako poke, and limu poke. Another reason is I love their prepared salads, like the orzo salad and potato salad. For an entree, I have either the meatloaf or the fried chicken. The beef stew is too sweet for my taste. Maybe too much carrots and not enough potato that day. What's for dinner? Malama Market is one of the easiest establishments to spot when heading into Kapolei. This is just like foodland. They offer many of the same grocery items, including poke, liqours, veggies, meats and sandwhich makingsq. Its also right next door to coffee bean. Anybody who lives up Makakilo but works downtown will understand what I am saying. I spend enough time in traffic. I Have to leave by 5:30 AM most mornings just to ensure I don't get caught in everybody's favorite parking lot: H1. By the end of the day, I am beat. Then I have to brave traffic headed west. Some days I am just making it to Makakilo Drive at 6PM. I have zero desire to cross over H1 and visit Wal-Mart, Foodland, or Safeway, let alone brave the insanity at Costco. So, Malama has become my go-to place for most of my mid-week necessities. They renovated this place several years back. It still looks small on the outside, but they have quite a selection if you make it inside. And "if" is the appropriate word. The parking lot at Malama is to small. It's often crowded and is a nightmare to get in and out of when there is a rush. Inside they have it all. Their fresh deli area has all sorts of prepared foods. They also have fresh baked breads and a very nice selection of fresh fruits and vegetables. Yes, the prices are slightly higher than the big box stores, but when you consider the convenience, it's worth it. With the exception of a few items, I generally skip the aisles of the store and focus on the fresh meats, seafood, frozen foods, and beer. Their beer selection is decent. Much better than Foodland. They have a good variety and the prices aren't all that extreme. I also love their meat selection. You can get everything you get at Safeway right here. I personally like to head to the back left corner where they have the marked-down meats. I don't care which day of the week it is, they always have something marked down: a manager's special. I have found everything from chicken breasts and T-bones to salami and sausage. Very high likelihood that if you stop by, there will be something on discount. Their seafood is always decent as well. They have a Tea Leaf & Coffee Bean attached to the Market. I have only visited it a few times. It's a bit slower than most coffee places, but when you're really needing that coffee fill-up, it is the closest brew outside of a gas station until you venture into Kapolei. They also have a RedBox movie rental kiosk just inside the store. It's located on the right hand side across from their hot prepared foods: Spam Musubi, Chicken, Lunch Plate, etc. All in all Malama is a great neighborhood store and has carved out a niche for itself. I can't imagine their prices ever being as good as the big boxes, including Tamura's at Barbers Point, but as the traffic only gets worse it looks a whole lot better than the alternatives. They have a great staff and they man their registers well. 5 for service. read more

The perfect fix of all things one can love about Hawaii in one spot! We got a quarter pound of 4 different types of poke to keep us happy to our next tourist destination, and boy, it was the happiest hour car ride ever. The lady behind the counter also let us sample each one, giving us 4 or 5 pieces in one bite. Ty ty ty!! We grabbed some coffee and chocolates for buddies back at home, all of which were cheaper than Walmart! A nicer, local, expanded grocery version of a 7-11. How about that for a description. Pricey but we're all use to this. They have a good deli/hot foods section. Tried their pork chop with kona coffee rub - it was ok. But just to know that they have items like this makes Malama a potential dinner alternative. The first Malama Market experience for us was while visiting Ohana on the Big Island. It is an excellent addition to the town of Pahoa, bright, clean, refreshing, and stocked with quality products. Malama Market Pahoa is that light that guides you to where you want to be. Malama's Kapolei market (On the slopes of Makakilo) is another placement gem. Having Malama located outside the Kapolei shopping plaza provides the Makakilo residents with that rare home town shopping experience, it's nice to have the option to avoid the hustle and bustle of Kapolei city. Living on "the hill" has its share of inconveniences. Fortunately, Malama Market offers a central and somewhat convenient location for the residents of makakilo. On top of the usual groceries, Malama market also offers a full deli counter, and even a Coffee Bean if you need your java fix at all times like I do. There is also a gas station next door for a quick stop on your way to the freeway offramp. Unfortunately, being a small store, your options for groceries are kind of limited. They have most of the necessities, but if you're looking for selection, or something specific, you may not find it here. While the location can be convenient if you're in an area of makakilo that's within walking distance, if you live much further up the hill and have to drive down, you might as well continue the extra 2 minutes down the hill to Kapolei shopping center. I don't personally stop here much simply because of the huge variety offered down at the shopping center. read more
