After having delicious Southeast Asian food in LA, my friend recommended Malaysian Kopitiam as a comparison point, and I'm so excited that we also have an amazing option in NoVa! The roti was delicious and piping hot -- I've had flakier but the texture had a nice chew to it that was slightly reminiscent of scallion pancakes. The chicken in the curry it came with was unbelievably tender, and I usually don't like chicken. The char kway teow is perfectly seasoned and not too salty, with juicy shrimp. Squid was not too chewy but had a little bit more coating than I prefer, although it had a simple seasoning similar to traditional Taiwanese flavors that are hard to find elsewhere. Rendang meat was tough and not as high quality but the flavor was perfectly seasoned. We are coming back to the try the lunch special, which is an absolute steal in this economy! I been holding off on writing review for this place because the food was good but to ME it was not amazing and bold flavor food like what I would I expected looking at the presentation of the Malaysian food from picture but after trying other Malaysian restaurant in different state. The service here was amazing and super friendly to answer question on the menu. Malaysian Style fried rice 3.5/5 - It good, it comforting to the lighter flavor pallet on the tongue. Shrimp Omelet 5/5 - simple but love this is basic southeast comfort food to eat with rice. Beef Rendang 4/5 - The meat was cook nicely, I do wish it have fat or tendon on it to give it more texture and chew but it was pretty lean stew meat but it makes sense for the American culture prefer lean meat. My friend and I came in on a Saturday morning/afternoon. It's really hard to get Malaysian food around here so we were hoping to try some authentic Malaysian Chinese food. The rojak is a mix of a fruit salad with savory sauce-- also had a crisp on top and topped with a generous amount of sesame. It was refreshing yet savory--to me, I wasn't sure if the flavors would mix well together, but they did! The mamak mee goreng is a thick noodle with tofu and shrimp--a good amount of tofu but only a couple pieces of shrimp. Nonetheless, it has that carb heavy mouth feel you want in a mee goreng and a savory rich sauce. The beef rendang had a fair amount of beef but the sauce was a very mild curry and aromatic! When this place was in DC, I stopped by for Hainanese chicken rice. I wasn't too impressed. Then, they moved to Centreville, a lot closer to me, so I followed them there to try the rest of the food. It was mostly a hit or miss. Some dishes were amazing. Some were underwhelming. So, I kind of stopped going there. This was a while back. Recently (2025 Aug), my friends and family started ordering from this place again and started raving about it. Someone said they recently had a change in ownership. I cannot confirm that, but I can confirm the food is super good now. The flavors are spot on, like they just acquired one of the best street chefs straight from Malaysia or something. I've tried the Laksa. It took me right to the hawker centers in Singapore. The me goreng took me straight to Malaysia, and I haven't been there lol. The salty fish fried rice and samba, OMG, is the best. The curry puffs and the hot teh tarik just feel like home. I've tried a lot already, and everything is a hit so far. The place was also renovated not too long ago, so it looks clean and fresh. Don't expect anything fancy, though. It's average. Focus is on the food. Finally got a chance to come here after a visit to Udvar Hazy since it's a bit far from the city. I went a few times when it was located in DC and it has been yearsssss but I still thought about the dishes. Service was decent, not too many people in the restaurant for a Sunday lunch, but it worked out for us. We came with a big group and ordered family style. Pretty much everything was good. Loved the flat noodles, the skewers, and the salted egg chicken especially. Its Malaysian Chinese food, and I like the Malaysian flavors-- there's quite a few different ones from Chinese food. I've been here a handful of times and the service is always so friendly, and the food is consistently delicious. This past visit felt like an ideally balanced meal, great across the board. I always get the fupei app--it has the most perfect texture that impresses me every time. The baby oyster omelette was a new try and it was so satisfying. I've never had appetizers get me so excited for the rest of the meal to come lol. Hokkien Mee was like a luxurious lo mein, the sauce wasn't as rich as the description implied, which was good because it didn't feel too heavy, I liked how much veggies it had. Had lunch here en route home from Shenandoah many years ago and finally managed to return today. Boy, I was so impressed and I miss the food here so much. We live in DC so it's pretty far from where we're at but hoping to move closer to here next year onwards. As a Singaporean, the flavors reminded so much of home especially the nonya curry fish fillet and Sambal kang kong. Split 4 mains and 3 desserts amongst 4 of us and we were stuffed to the brim. My cousin took me here for lunch and it was our first times having Malaysian food! We were craving roti since we had it at an international food market in NYC and wanted to try Malaysian Kopitiam's version to see if it could satisfy that itch. It sure did!! The roti was buttery, flakey, delicate, and paired perfectly with the curry on the side! Delish! We also got the salted egg chicken and the "create your own noodles". I personally love salted egg flavour so I wish it was more prominent, but the crunch was definitely there and the chicken was not dry. The curry noodles were good although I would've liked more spice. The service was super friendly and welcoming I felt like I was being served by a friend! I've loved Malaysian food since spending a couple of months in Singapore, and was happy to find myself in Centerville so I could give this highly Yelp-rated place a try. Sadly, my experience didn't meet my expectations. When I walked in, the place seemed a bit strange. An entire swath of tables had been moved aside, and there were large fans set up. If I had to guess, and I could have avoided guessing by asking, I would say the place had a water issue and they were trying to dry things out. However, they were open and serving, so I went in and ordered Chicken Curry Laksa and some Malaysian iced tea. The Chicken Curry Laksa had chunks of fried tofu, several slices of okra, and some pieces of what was probably chicken. All of this was floating in a mildly spicy chicken curry broth that tasted... OK. The iced tea seemed watered down. I remember when this place was featured in Signature Dish. I don't know what happened but I'm not likely to return here anytime soon. read more

The decoration was simple with one wall mural of the Malaysian city with restaurants and buildings. Not too crazy about the calamari. It tasted like frozen food. We ordered these main dishes E2 Malaysian Chicken Curry E11 Beef Rendang E12 Curry Fish Fillet x2 FN1 Char Keuy Teow FN6 Singapore Noodle NE7 Salted Egg Lai Yu Shrimp R1 Hainanese Chicken Rice R4 Malaysian Fried Rice Our favorite dish was Curry Fish Fillet. It was so yummy. We ordered two of them and everyone gobbled it up quickly. The kids liked the Malaysian fried rice. We all enjoyed the Malaysian Chicken Curry. Beef Rendang was good, too. The beef was tender with a tasty sauce. My brother liked the Salted Egg Lai Yu Shrimp but I didn't care for it. This dish was expensive ($28) and the portion was quite small. The Hainanese Chicken was ok. It was mostly bones and not much meat. Singapore noodles and Char Keuy Teow didn't have much taste. The service was excellent. The waiter, Marcus was friendly and funny. Make sure to get the some egg yolks, chicken and rice into a bite - to get the most flavor. I got the egg noodles with the curry laksa and it paired really well together. This is truly a hole in the wall place in the DMV, as it's tucked away in an unassuming strip mall. Overall, most of the dishes were a hit. We ended up getting the two recommend appetizers, the roti canai and the chicken satay skewers which were both excellent. The roti canai was like a flavor bomb in my mouth - buttery and flaky and soaked up all the delicious curry sauce to form the perfect bite. The chicken satay skewers were succulent, well seasoned, and had excellent grill flavor. My only wish was that it had more meat! My entree, the curry laksa chicken noodle soup with the wide noodles were so addictingly good - I could not stop eating it! The flavor of the broth was both bold and comforting, as the coconut cream hid in the background punctured by notes of mint that perfectly complimented the savory notes of the soup. As a self-proclaimed thick noodle lover, the rice noodles were perfectly thick, chewy, and slippery. Someone else at my table got the beef rendang and I tried a bite of it...unfortunately, the beef was dry and fell short of expectations. Service was fast and food came out in a reasonable time. Our waiter was conversationally friendly and made small talk with us while taking our order. This is my first review for Malaysian Kopitiam even though I've dined here or ordered out about 4 previous times. The food is excellent and I don't know of another Malaysian restaurant nearby. I came for lunch around 12:30pm on a Sunday. There were about 4-5 other tables with patrons. Except for once, I've always at least had the Malaysian Curry Chicken. This time, I also had the Beef Rendang. Both were excellent - extremely flavorful with a good, mild spice. The curry chicken has a mild coconut backdrop accentuated with a peppery spice. The beef rendang has slightly smokier chile-forward spice. Both are excellent accompanied by rice to soak up their flavors. The portions seemed on the smaller side, but I still ended up bringing some home since I went through an additional side of rice to savor the sauce. The beef was a bit expensive ($22, vs. the chicken's $16). While it had been simmered long enough to shred easily, I think due to the lean cut of meat, it did have some dryness to it. The raw slivered red onion added a nice contrasting spice to this dish. I would order it again but maybe after trying a few of the other menu options. I would definitely recommend the curry chicken. If you want to explore more of the menu in addition to trying this curry, I'd recommend the roti canai appetizer which comes with a smaller serving and two roti. I wish there were roti available separately as a side. On a previous visit, I've also had the Belacan Eggplant and Okra. It has a really good savoriness to it. I plan on coming back soon to try other dishes, but will probably always have the chicken curry. read more

Malaysian Kopitiam is a cute family-owned and -run Malaysian restaurant is such a gem! The staff are always so welcoming, kind, and friendly, and they seem to treat all their customers with warmth and fondness! The hubs and I came here, pre-pandemic, after the lunch rush, and we ordered the following: Satay Chicken (which came with 4 skewers and came with a kicked-up peanut sauce); the Mamak Mee Goreng (this had a generous amount of juicy plump shrimp, and the stir-fried noodles and veggies were so good; just note that this is a spicy dish!); the Beef Chow Fun (the wide noodles were stir-fried and cooked perfectly, and the beef pieces were tender and so flavorful!); and, the Kopitiam Noodle (which also came with delicious plump shrimp, topped on braised wonton noodles, fish cake, bok choy, and bean sprouts in a brown sauce). Each dishes were made-to-order and came out in this small little wok-like bowl - the use of the spices were on point, and even though the noodle dishes were stir-fried, there was no hint of greasy-ness - just full flavor! Even with the 3 noodle dishes that ordered, each were distinct and had their own flavor profiles - YUM! With very few Malaysian restaurants in the area, we were willing to venture all the way out of Centreville this past Wednesday evening. A9. ROTI CANAI (2 PCS) - 9 A bit expensive but this is a must if you are thinking of splitting an appetizer. The roti was hot and fresh, super fluffy and went well with the chicken curry which was well-seasoned. There's actually chicken pieces in here which were all very tender. We'd recommend. A4. CRISPY CALAMARI - 12 Pretty crispy. I had one of my friend's crispy calamari but nothing to write home about. R2. NASI LEMAK - 15 I expected there to be more toppings or the presentation to be a bit better, but the entree was pretty bare. There was a small bowl of chicken curry (which was pretty good), coconut jasmine rice (super fragrant), and then small dabs of the sambal and anchovy, some peanuts, half a boiled egg and three slices of cucumber. Overall, this felt really empty? The food was very homemade which I enjoyed. FN7. DRY CURRY WONTON MEE - 15 This one was very good. My friend ordered this and I had a few bites of it and really liked it. I love the texture of the wonton noodles mixed with the chicken curry gravy -- so much flavor. The yuchoy and beansprout was a good addition of vegetables. I'd definitely recommend this one as an entree! Overall, the food was good and so was the service. The environment - Clean, simple & not too overwhelming. Delicate designs & didn't have too much going on but it was nice. The food - Everything was tasty. We had the roti canai & the fried fish purée fupei. The roti was perfectly flaky & the other appetizer was crispy without it being too greasy. I had the vegetarian curry laksa which came with lots of veggies & flavorful broth. I also tried my friends' Flounder filet was was good as well. The price - The cost of the food was surprising. I almost didn't go here because their sign was missing. Their Char Kway Teow and Curry Laksa took me back to my time in Singapore (yes they're Malaysian, but Singapore had a lot of Malaysian influence). The Smokey wok-hei from the CKT was so addicting. Came here to try out Malaysian Food in the area since it's a bit limited on options. Lots of parking in the plaza so I don't think you have any issues parking. Malaysian Kopitiam used to reside in DC but it's here in Centerville so I'm happy that it's closer to me. While I can't say that when walking in I was greeted, the staff did acknowledge me and ushered me to seat at a booth. The interior; nothing really fancy but it's minimal except for the wall mural behind the last booth. That was pretty and I am glad I was able to take a picture of it. I opened the menu, pointing to the dish I knew I was already interested in ordering. I'm someone who likes to look at what the place is serving before actually visiting. I don't like having the server come back and forth waiting for me to order if the place is busy; but that's just me. My appetizer to start off with was Satay Chicken. An absolute classic in my opinion. Grilled Chicken with peanut satay sauce and onions & cucumbers, it's a very safe pick if you haven't eaten at a Malaysian restaurant but I do think the Roti Canai is good too. For my entrée I got the Dry Curry Wonton Mee. If you like wonton noodles with curry gravy with cuts of chicken on top, this is the perfect dish for you. I honestly enjoyed eating this dish as it had an element of spice but enough that it doesn't overpower the dish. The chicken was juicy with every bite and with the noodles, it adds more oomph. Vegewtables... well while there's YuChoy and Bean Sprouts and bits of Mint leaves on top I think they were just there for the presentation. I did enjoy eating everything when paired with the noodles but it didn't add anything extra than the curry taste. Would I come back to try more Malaysian Food? Of course! Dropped in around 11am for a Sunday, missed the lunch specials (which are weekday only). The menus still mention Lunar New Year (they are no longer there). Some of the specials are seasonal, so you'll have to ask. The decor is kind of typical but the interior has a neat mural of Malaysia, but not entirely sure of the context. A small introduction to 100Plus, which is apparently a local drink. Service was good, we were served directly by the owner. Looking over shoulder we see a steady crowd of what look like familiar old timers coming in; a sustained stream of repeat customers is usually a good sign! MUST GO!!! It's only January but I'm sure this will probably be in my top 5's newest and best tried in the dmv area this year. I came with a friend and we split the mamek mee goreng and smoked oolong chicken. The chicken was so juicy and tender, and had an aftertaste of the oolong. The sauce it came with (I have no idea what it was) was incredibly delightful. It also comes with a side of rice. The mamak mee goreng was so flavorful and had a generous amount of proteins--shirmp, chicken, tofu, and another softly fried protein. Definitely recommend both!! I also got the nasi goreng to-go and it's flavorfully fried with a good balance of toppings between proteins and veggies. Sometimes, the rice is harder/crunchier but they got it just rice! There's plenty of seating and such a diverse amount of options. The two servers we had were really nice and funny. My curry had enough servings of rice and curry for two meals. It helped me feel full and focused for my long 9hr shift today. It's always great idea to listen to locals for restaurant picks, and while it was about 30 minutes away from my place, I was excited for the meal. The restaurant has a cozy, family-run vibe.
