Ahhh...the Mall Deli. Our neighbors are both very proud Pitt State alumni who have talked up this place called the Mall Deli ever since we met them three years ago. Pittsburg Kansas isn't exactly in a centrally located, easy to get to location. Located in the far southeast corner of Kansas, the Mall Deli is located in the small Pittsburg mall and is a long time favorite of locals and obviously people from afar as well. From what we heard from our neighbors and what I read on multiple reviews, my expectations were set quite high for our visit. We just happened to be in Pittsburg for one of my kid's band events and there was absolutely no question as to where we would eat. The Mall Deli is a sit down restaurant in the mall and when we arrived, the line to be seated was about 15 people deep outside of the restaurant.....clearly a good first impression. The Mall Deli is known for their in-house specialty creamy Italian sauce. They bring out a basket of crackers and then people simply start adding dollops of this amazing (160 calories per 2Tbls so be aware!) sauce. We were advised to get an appetizer of their delicious egg bagel that has your choice of melted cheese on top. Dipping the soft chewy egg bagel in the creamy Italian should have been the end of my meal, but I still had my main meal to order. I ordered the BBQ Brisket sandwich and my wife ordered the Meatball Grinder and as usual we split them. Amazing is the best word I can say. The tenderness and flavor of the meat combined with the freshness of the kaiser roll made it one of the best lunches I've had in a very long time. Adding some of the creamy Italian to the sandwiches made lunch even more amazing. I do have to admit, I felt a bit guilty after lunch because I have no clue how many calories were consumed, but it was worth it. The best part of all, the following weekend after my first visit to the Mall Deli, we went on a family vacation down to Arkansas which took us right through Pittsburg KS once again and you know where we stopped for lunch again. read more

This place has the best rueben I have eaten in all my years. They are pretty reasonable on price for those of us on a fixed budget. We also got the deviled eggs, not like mama made them but pretty close second. Waitress was a middle aged lady from another country but was a really good waitress and kept our drinks full and brought us two baskets of crackers and the dressing in the bottle we left her a big tip will go back next time we have to go to that side of town. read more

Great deli style meals for cheap. Where the locals eat. Chili is awesome, overstuffed sandwiches are exactly that, overstuff, so much so I couldn't finish it. Get the regular size one unless you are very hungry. read more

There with a large party and they accommodated us well. Drinks were quickly taken care of and orders taken soon as everyone was there. Had the french dip and was quite good. Service was excellent and prices looked better than you'd think. read more

I love Mall Deli! Great sandwiches, soups, and salads for extremely affordable price. Typical ticket price for one person is $8 including a drink. Its seriously an amazing place to eat with family. Their busiest time is Sundays around noon because a lot of people go after church. They do a really good job of seating large groups. When you are waiting for your food, they will bring you club crackers and creamy Italian dressing. Eat the dressing on the crackers. Everyone does it and its a free appetizer while you wait. read more

I've been eating at the Mall Deli since I was in high school(I'm 37 now), and I've seen all the changes(and non-changes) over the past 20 years or so. The current incarnation of the Deli is relatively unchanged in terms of their menu. And ultimately that isn't a good thing. What you have to chose from are deli sandwiches, hamburger, hot dogs, and uhm, deli sandwiches. Now I realize on the surface that is enough, and I will admit it was. But maybe it's just my age, but going to the Deli now, isn't as fun or filling or affordable as it used to be. The food is good, don't get me wrong. Fresh meat and bread, good cheeses and veggies(most of the time), and a nice selection of side dishes like potato salad and baked beans to pair with the chips every meal comes with. But the crowds are almost always huge, the prices continue to climb, and some of the luster of fighting the crowds and overpaying for a ham sandwich doesn't do it for me. I know people who eat at the Deli 3 or 4 times a week, and that used to be me. But now, if I go once a month, it's pretty good. Some days I will crave a Deli Dog or a bagel with cheese and will stop in, but my days of paying $25.00 for my wife and two kids to each turkey sandwiches are over. read more

I went there many times in the past and found the food really good. I came back to the area after being gone for 17 years and went there a total of 3 times. The three times were a really big disappointment, the taste and amounts of the food went down hill big time. I will never go back again, friends that went with me felt the same way. If you come in expecting an authentic NY style deli, you'll be disappointed. But if you want a good meal based around deli meat sandwiches or any of their special dishes, e.g., the "deli-dog", at a great price, you will be pleased. They've been around ~30 years, have expanded at least twice and always have a line out the door around lunchtime. If you are eating with locals, expect your meal to be briefly interrupted several times as everyone exchanges pleasantries. In many ways, this is THE local dining place for Pittsburg. read more

I have mixed feelings about The Mall Deli. I'd heard a few raves before going, and it honestly did not live up to the hype for me. The food was okay. Moderately priced deli sandwiches with tasty ingredients, but nothing to write home about, either. I had the Big Matt, which was essentially the cousin of a philly cheese steak. The grilled onions were perfect and the meat wasn't too greasy. My sandwich came with chips and a pickle, neither of which I really wanted. I think it would be nice if they had side options instead of that. I ordered cottage cheese with mine to the tune of a couple more bucks. There were not a lot of vegetarian options for my dining companion, who wound up choosing a Muenster grilled cheese on an egg bagel. The decor is tacky and 80's but not in a good way. It looks like they have made a few updates that were ill-advised. Our server and the cashiers seemed like they really couldn't be bothered - not friendly at all, but not rude either - and the atmosphere was loud and akin to a mall food court in a larger mall. Overall I wasn't very impressed. The high reviews are kinda blowing my mind. Maybe I'll try it again one day. read more

An amazing metropolitan Deli set in a small town atmosphere. Every single sandwich on the menu is delicious. If you ever get a wild hair, try a new one ... and you won't walk away disappointed. I want to respond to the review posted by someone from KC. Like you, I had heard the hype about this place. On my first visit, I was not that impressed. I am thinking now it might depend on what you order. After subsequent visits, it is now among my favorite places. And I have seen the long line out the door at lunch time, which is why we go in mid-afternoon. We always have dessert--the Dutch Apple Pie ala-mode is outstanding. Even when we eat lunch elsewhere, we drive over to the Mall Deli for this dessert! Yesterday we had one of the specials (egg salad sandwich), and it was very good. We also had the brisket sandwich and it was AMAZING. It was the best brisket sandwich I've had anywhere. Ask the waitress to tell you how it is cooked. Delicious and fork tender. I have heard that their meatball sandwich is excellent, and plan to try it soon. The coffee has A+ aroma and flavor, and the service is friendly and efficient. Pittsburg has a lot of good restaurants, and the Mall Deli is one of its best. read more
