    Hitchcock Burger & Truffle Fries

I just moved to the area and heard this place had the BEST burgers. Well, they were right! But not just that. The truffle fries were amazing and the grilled artichokes were delish! Also the owner, Taylor is down to earth and super chill. The bartender Rich always has a smile on his face and is super nice and makes everyone at the bar feel welcome. All of the wait staff/servers are super friendly. Just a great place for any occasion. Family dinner, girls dinner out, date night. This will be a frequent spot for me.

Happy they reopened.... Nice atmosphere and fireplace is a draw on a cold windy day. Had the French dip with salad. Ranch has a touch of horseradish and very good! Nice wines and tons of draft beers for those beer drinkers. Jimmy was a gracious and friendly server. Will be dialed in by spring for music and patio fun!

Malones Grill is now a bakery. It just opened today. It's a French patisserie. They have French fair and cocktails.

End to end an incredible experience. These wonderful humans care deeply about flavor and dining and it shows! If you have not discovered this Santa Cruz gem yet, then you're in for a lovely surprise. Go before morels are out of season!!! We went big to celebrate a belated birthday. Our first course - Mocktail for my friend, and the Midnight Oil for me. It was like the elegant older sister of a Manhattan. Spirit forward but also subdued. The seasonal salad: OMG the wasabi peas + the green olives + the goat cheese balls? F*N BRILLIANT! Maybe the best salad I've ever had at a restaurant. Top 3 of all time minimum. Morel fettuccine: Mmmmm! Homemade pasta that reminded me of spatzle with morel and truffle toma. Salsa verde plus fried basil and sage for garnish. Delicious!! The toma and morels together gave this faint smokiness that layered beautifully with the verde. For mains- my friend raved about the Yuzu Glazed Chicken, and I had the Celeriac Branzino which was perfection. The fish was cooked exactly right - crispy skin, flaky flesh. The dish as a whole was delightfully creamy, bright, crispy and grounded with a little hint of savory fresh dill. The lotus root chip garnish was a wonderful repetition of the crunchy texture. Loved it! Dessert - There's no way we were leaving without dessert, and the lemon blueberry cheesecake did not disappoint! Pecan crumble crust, hidden whole bloobs in the seemingly whipped cheesecake, topped with lemon curd and blueberry preserves. And the toasted meringue garnish? Yes, yes please. How this was as light as air but so richly decadent is pure magic Thank you to everyone at VIM

What had enticed us to go to VIM was the creativity of the menu. There were combinations I hadn't seen before and it seemed that the chef was bouncing around the globe choosing ingredients to combine. The result? Every bite is a sensation in your mouth! Different spices, flavors and textures combined to make you slow down and savor the experience. We shared a salad and two entrees (pork and filet) and tried to make sure we saved room for dessert since I had read that the owner was master. Every dish we had we enjoyed from the first bite to the last! And the desserts? Holy smokes! The chef is known for the chocolate cake (which was divine and very rich) but the cheesecake was another level! It was like eating creamy clouds of deliciousness. The service was spectacular! In a world where customer service is sometimes hard to come by, VIM knocks it out of the park. Our waiter, Cole, was incredibly knowledgeable, personable and attentive. I have read a couple reviews knocking the ambiance or configuration of the restaurant . There are limited tables and a lot of space between them. The ceilings are high, also giving a lot of space to the restaurant. It definitely has a different feel, but what it does is allow is for you to talk to and actually hear your dinner companions!! That is nearly unheard of in restaurants now, where they are optimizing every square space by cramming tables so close to each other that you can barely hear yourself think. I appreciated that as an additional part of the wonderful dining experience. You are best to get a reservation. There is a bar that I believe takes walk-ins, but when we got there at 6:30 it was full. We will definitely be coming back!

3% fee for credit cards…read more I highly recommend the distillery tour. Book it in advance. It's super informative and fun. Afterward, there is a tasting of each spirit; however, the pours are very small; about 1/4 ounce of each spirit. It's such a small taste that it's not much more than "smelling" the gin. Which is fine. They make a total of 21 spirits, including 7 whiskeys. Highlights: For their gin, they use Lambic potstills; they have no column stills with baskets. Since they only use potstills, they macerate all the botanicals; it's a "wet" gin. Gin 01 is the flagship, and loaded with lavender. They sell 10000 cases per year. It's available at Whole Foods state-wide, and at the Santa Cruz Costco. Costo sells Gin 01 for $28, a significant discount from the $34 price at the distillery. Gin 01 works best with floral and citrusy cocktails like a corpse reviver #2. Gin 02 is a lightly barrel aged gin. It's aged for 2 months, and each barrel gets used twice. The gin is infused with bay leaf, sage, and fennel: it's more savory. They use bay leaf foraged at Delaveaga park, and they get sage and fennel from a farm nearby. I detected a cedar flavor. It's better with heavier cocktails, like a Paper Plane. They do seasonal gins: One for each season. For gin and tonics served at the distillery, they make their own tonic: it has a lavender note. It also uses chinchona, bitter orange, grapefruit, and elderflower. They have blue agave spirits. They get agave from farms in Yolo county. The farms do the pit roasting for them. The blanco tequila uses champagne yeast. The reposado spirit is aged for 11 months. Their mezcal is more peppery, less smokey. For whiskey: - They have a Port barrel finished whiskey that is really tasty. - I thought the rye was very sweet. - For their peated whiskey, they use malted barley imported from Scotland. Their single malt uses a crystal malt. Overall, it was a very fun visit.

Unfortunately it went downhill from there. I spoke with my waitress to inquire about dairy free vegan options. Not much but I did order a Ba mi sandwich with mushroom. What came was a pork version ~ definitely not vegan. If it were my call , the sandwich I then had to wait for would have been on the house. No such luck. This is not all. Where I was seated by hostess was definitely the world's worst table in the absolute flow of an onslaught of wait staff delivering everything from the kitchen and busing dishes. It was awful. Since my order had already been messed, I did not have the heart to ask about moving. This was an all time worst dining experience. I will never return here again. I have enjoyed the other Venus in Seascape. But these folks were inattentive and lacking empathy. Even their martini was sub standard. Not so at the other Venus.

Frankie wasted everyone's time and money, and is absolutely running this place into the ground out of genuinely stunning incompetence and poor character. I will be shocked if the business survived into the new year. The owner, Frankie, is incapable of running an establishment. Somehow they cannot keep taps filled. Somehow they don't understand there's really one job to running a bar. Somehow they don't get that their professional behavior is unbecoming of an owner. They are fundamentally bad at their job and it shows in every unfinished feature of the bar and lackluster experience of coming here. They engage in unbelievably bad faith negotiations with outside parties in the worst, most performative tenderqueer nightmare way. Their over-promising and under-delivering to people coming in to perform is shocking. For example, they are incapable apparently of providing a basic quality sound system *in a bar with performances*. They don't know how to keep a schedule and honor commitments to said schedule. Knowing how they treat people, I regret spending any money here. This could have been great, but it isn't. It's sad to watch a beautiful dream wither; don't bother coming here.

My friend had All a Dream, also very good. The wine offerings are minimal, this is very much a cocktail or champagne type of place, with caviar being the primary food service. Speaking of service, the bartender was excellent, both in his mixology and demeanor. It took awhile to get the drinks, but I assume that was due to the complexity of the cocktails, paired with having just opened the doors a few min earlier. Two notes: 1. The barstools were a little too low, imo. I don't normally pay much attention to that detail, but these were uncomfortably low for me, even with my long torso, I was hyper aware of my posture. So maybe that's actually a good thing 2. Other patrons were rolling in shortly behind me, so there is probably an early crowd when they first open, then a late night group that appreciates the 2am closing time. Interior is beautiful, and you can use the steps up to the 2nd floor either from N Santa Cruz or the rear parking lot off W Main.
