The flavor was solid, and I liked that they use the same carne asada from their taco booth--it's always tasty. I do wish the torta had more crunch and some fresh veggies like lettuce, onion, tomato, or avocado to balance things out. It's a small shop, serving 3 meals. We stopped in for breakfast and people in here already in the early morning! I got the buddy chilaquiles, which was mild and great for breakfast and my partner got the torta cubano, their specialty, which was flavorful, massive and delicious. I have to agree with Chris C. and Nancy M. that Malu's is definitely authentic, and I have to give credit to Malu's for not using a lot of grill oil. I ordered huevos rancheros, scrambled on the eggs and hashbrowns because I don't care for the bell peppers that come with the home fries. That's what I ordered. Instead, I was indeed served the home fries, and when I commented she told me how good the home fries were. No offer was made to change what was served. This just happened to me twice as well at La Rincocita, the old Taco Roco in Paso Robles. The cooks aren't reading the orders and the serving staff isn't checking the food before serving it. The food was ok. Honestly, not fantastic and definitely better than Touch of Paso (their grill oil makes me ill.) The home fries I was mistakenly served were so salty they were almost inedible (remember that I ordered hashbrowns!). Service was fast, the people are friendly, there won't be a puddle of grill oil left on the plate. I won't give you a 5 but you're better than a 3. read more

We went to this restaurant a long time ago and decided to try it again. It is very rustic and there's five tables inside. Most of the tables are outside and if it was warmer, we would've sat out there. The service was good although do not know any names. The coffee was better than some places, but not great. I had machaca and I had not had it in a long time and it was very good. My husband had Carnitas. Both of these were with eggs, beans, hashbrowns, and tortillas. They gave us green chili salsa, and I guess I should've used more to make the meat a little bit more flavorful. We loved AJ's and were sad to see it was no longer around, but when I read some of the reviews (and saw the pics of the food) of the new place, we just had to try it on our way back from Pismo Beach to the Bay Area. It was just as good, probably even better! I had a carnitas torta, which was delicious -- tender flavorful pork, creamy queso fresco, and an amazing bun. Daughter got a breakfast sandwich with bacon and hash browns, and wife got the chicken breakfast plate, both good. We got a big basket of complimentary tortilla chips with homemade salsa to start with. Lots of outdoor seating. Service is really friendly and cheerful. I was hesitant to visit after AJ's left, but I'm glad I did! We hit Malu's around 11, so just in between lunch and breakfast. We both opted for lunch and ordered off their specials as they are now featuring weekend bbq! My husband had their tri tip sando and I had their half chicken plate. The tri tip was tender, delicious and well portioned and the chicken was juicy and well seasoned! The patio has been cleaned up a little since AJ's and continues to be a great option for dining! A nice touch as well was house made salsas (rojo and verde) on the table; both very yummy, the red with more heat and the green with more acid. I ordered the California burrito and can't say a bad thing about it. A great balance of steak, fries, guacamole, and other tasty morsels. We also ordered the quesadilla with chile verde. Oddly the quesadilla came with cheddar cheese, but a good amount of sour cream and guacamole. The menu offers both Mexican and American fare, and some dessert options. We stopped here before heading to Big Sur and it was a good choice. We are stubborn Southern California kids who grew up on Mexican food so we are particular. Ordered the beans, cheese and rice burrito. Why? It's the way to know if a place is real. Yes they use lard and that is exactly what I want. The burrito was tasty and the ratio of rice to bean was great. The amount of cheese was very good as well. You want them all the mix perfectly and they did. We also ordered the beef hard shell taco, delicious and classic. May be a little more cheese on top. We also ordered the Al Pastor & Chicken soft taco. The chicken taco was good & the meat was tender. The Al Pastor was brilliant. Very tender and the flavors were lovely. Went here after a nearby yoga class for breakfast burritos and this place is such a little hole in the wall gem! The indoor seating is quite small and only has a few tables, but they also have an outdoor patio section which is nice and offers great sun. Super small inside, maybe 3 tables? However decent patio outside that in nicer weather I'd love to relax at. I tried 3 tacos; shrimp, Al pastor & asada while my mom had a club sandwich with fries. I tried some of the fries and they had a nice seasoning to them and good crispness. All three of my tacos were delicious, but I think my favorite was the shrimp. It had a tangy sauce with a little bit of heat to it that was nicely complimented by the diced mango and cabbage the Al Pastore taco was nicely seasoned. Lunch for two is $25 which is very reasonable. Service was friendly and quick. As I said before it is small inside but everything was very clean and colorful. As far as the menu it's a mix of Mexican and American food, but based on the dishes seen as we walked past on our way in I would say that the Mexican food is the bigger hit here. Couple of dessert options available though we didn't try them. Breakfast menu looked good too. Definitely it would be real easy to drive past and not think much of it, but I was very happy with our experience and will come back to try more! read more

Had a late breakfast at Malu's today. Went in without any expectations. We were immediately seated. Husband ordered the breakfast plate and I ordered the 2 buddy Chilaquilles. Husbands eggs and bacon were cooked perfectly to order. The beans, potatoes and tortillas were all delicious. The Chilaquilles were absolutely fabulous. I had refried beans with it instead of the potatoes. (I can't eat potatoes as my body reacts poorly to them) the meal was extremely satisfying. We are delighted to have found this jewel of an eatery right on our normal route to Morro bay. My current favorite in Atascadero. Fresh, perfectly cooked food, a solid Mexican menu. Excellent chile rellenos (I love those). Fresh agua frescas. This is like eating at your mom's, if she was a great cook, and the staff is just as welcoming.
