Been here a few times now as I live close by. Overall, it is the best non-chain Italian food I've had here in Denver. Great prices, appropriate portion sizes, and all entrees come with a soup and salad. Soup and Salad are basic but good. The entrees have all been great and it is still my favorite place to go. For service (I can only speak to dinner), it's usually wonderful. Never an empty glass and very quick and attentive service. One time I went it was marginal service, -1 star. Nothing fancy, but sooooo good. Old fashioned family style italian. If you are looking for your food to have exotic names or interesting cream sauces go to a chain restaurant. This is the good stuff like if you were having a classic New York Italian meal. Chicken Franchaise is the best thing on the menu, perfect mix of sweet and salt. Price isn't overwhelming, by any means, but the food is average. This place qualifies as worth a visit, but I gave it a second shot and won't be returning. Food-- The food is decent and averagely priced. It is served as multiple courses with a very bland Italian soup, salad and bread. You will get more than enough to eat and, of course, their food travels well for leftovers. However, I actually feel you get a better meal out of Johnny Carino's and those places (please note: it pains me to have to say that). Restaurant-- I like the feel of this place for the most part. It comes off as Italian, and it comes off as a mom and pop shop (both good). The service is decent to good and the people are friendly. Not sure where the bad reviews come from because this place rocks! I've been driving past it for years so about a month ago my fiancé and I decided to try it out. Since then we've been back there two more times. The service has been great ever time, just the right combination of attentiveness but not "hovering". And friendly!! Took the wife and kids out for dinner after a friend took me here for lunch a few days before. Greeted and seated right away and gave a drink order before the chair got warm. Ordered the Rigatoni Dominic, wife had the Half n Half and the kids had pizza and spaghetti with sausage. The food...the flavors, it's left me speechless and all I heard from the wife was groans and moans and the kids..the pickiest kids I've ever known, finished theirs, and I'm not sure they took a breath between bites. Wait staff is phenomenal, never ran dry on my drink, never had a dirty plate sitting for long and everything worked like clockwork, no pressure to finish the soup because they wanted to bring you your salad, no pressure to finish anything, they waited for you. You don't see that anymore unless you're paying top top dollar. The pride and passion that the owner for his business really comes through in every facet of the visit. read more

I'm sure that was not the case at the Olive Garden at SouthLands. Starting with the soup... watery stock with celery and pasta floating in it....Meh. Our meal's were equally bleh... reminded me of Fazolie's... kind of bland and fast food..ish. My friend requested a better knife to cut his Calzone and was told there was none. This is a warm place where you can come just to dine or have a fine time;). My family has been coming here for over 13 years and we know the owner. The spaghetti is made of home-made and delicious noodles covered in fresh tomato sauce. The soup.....don't get me started...mmm. The salads are always fresh and tasty; there is a crunch for your munch. Along with the great food, they can accommodate for allergies and take care in their preperation. This is family friendly or perfect for a romantic date. There is sometimes live music as well. All in all, this is by far my favorite restaurant and scores 10s in all category's. read more

Neighborhood Italian Excellence We were completely burn't out on chain restaurants. We had been looking for the local family owned restaurant where FOOD was the focus. Mama Louise's was incredible. The restaurant was quiet and cozy. The staff was second only to the food. They were warm and extremely professional. The owner took time to check in with every table to insure their experience was great. Denver is lacking restaurants with this type of personality. Try it and I promise you will go back. Just left this restaurant. Food is good. Had to listen to some big mouth that showed up just before closing talking about how he was friends with the owner. He then continued to call one of the girls a name regarding her nationality which in turn made her cry. I didn't appreciate having to listen to that kind of ignorance let alone the damage it did to that girls feelings. I won't be going back if that's the kind of people going in there and bragging about being friends with the owner. If that was my friend I would be embarrassed by them. I don't think I would want someone putting my employees down and calling them names. I'll make sure to let everyone I know about this encounter. read more

OUTSTANDING SERVICE AND FOOD! While the food was plentiful and delicious, my wife and I visited while in town for a conference. The service is what was expected at a 5 star restaurant. The floors were clean, the glasses never were less than half full and the moment we were done with plates, they were removed. The staff worked so well together despite having some new employees. Dani was a week old and one of the bussers was on her first night. We were compelled to compliment the owners who were also there on a Friday night. Kent and Colleen were VERY hospitable and while chatting with them, found out why they are successful. A great experience!! So disappointing. This restaurant is near my house and I was hoping for a decent experience, but no. I ordered a side salad which was worse than a fast food salad. Just some ice berg lettuce slapped on a plate with some bottled dressing. No fixings, no croutons. I also had the house soup which lacked seasoning. The pasta shells in it were extremely overcooked. The garlic knots also didn't taste fresh. Glad I didn't try any entree--who knows how badly they would've screwed it up. My friend ordered the bruschetta which couldn't have been further from authentic. It consisted of french bread end pieces with some not-so-fresh tomato-y mixture and barely melted cheese. Gross. Lastly, the service. The waiter barely spoke and looked like he would rather be anywhere in the universe other than serving me and my nice friends. Talk about some Good-Ass Italian. Yes to Garlic, yes to pesto, yes to pasta. Typical setup with the checkered tablecloths and the Mama's boys waiters. It wasn't too crowded for a late lunch and man the food was delish. I had the pesto linguini with chicken and it was cooked perfectly, with the most brilliant sauce. Pesto's never tasted so good, and it came with this buttery little roll sprinkled with tasty spices. Down side, the salad was boring, literally, iceberg lettuce with one slice of tomato, one slice of pepperoni, one pepercini, and one slice of cucumber, and a little heavy on the ranch. I'm into salads and this one was under par. The other thing that wasn't too appealing was my bf ordered some hot sandwich dripping with cheese and sauce, and on his plate was a small bag of chips. Now if this had been a sandwich joint, that would have been fine, but came across as a bit tacky here. But damn, if you love sauce, and you love pasta, run, don't walk to this place. It's awesome. We've been to this place many years ago and had nothing than bad memories. Last Friday night our friends talked us in to give them a new chance - and it turned out that the experience was a DISASTER again. Starting from our waitress chewing on her gum while asking us for our order and bringing the food to the table - EVERYTHING and I mean EVERYTHING we had was a disappointment. The appetizer soup (celeri and pasta) was totally oversalted. Our friend had the "Half and Half Combo" and she didn't eat more than some forks - and did not want take it home in a box. My wife had Lobster Ravioli (highly recommended by the gum-chewing girl) and she believes it was average at best. 4 pieces of pasta and pureed fish paste (maybe lobster?). The worst was my order. I ordered Shrimp Fettucine Alfredo. A good portion of spaghetti, 4 (really 4) shrimps almost uncooked and some kind of white very watery sauce. The whole thing with absolutely no taste at all! I cannot remember having such a bad food for a long long time!!! The owner came to the table asking for compliments and when he heard what we all had to say decided to take 10% of our bill. We'll NEVER come back - it's our promise! We leave this place to all the other so excited guest and we will find better food somewhere else. read more

I ate my second meal at Mama Louise's on 8/1/08. I have a tricky time driving in this neighborhood and never seem to know when Tower changes to Orchard or if Buckley will cross Arapahoe etc. Make sure to have good directions to enter the parking lot correctly. The first time I went to Mama Louise's I was smitten! Cozy and sized just right! I had three dinner mates and we all ordered and shared meals. Immediate service, and all entree's are served w/ soup and salad. The Minestrone.............Shells & undercooked celery floating in god's broth! Tomato's, oily, salty, just DIVINE! (Weird...I know, but honest description!) The salad a classic green salad....however these two times it's been slightly bitter.....wonder how they're washing it or storing it to make Iceburg be bitter. Now the pasta! The house sauce is of a sweeter marinara style, thicker not too wet. The homemade egg noodles are classic. They could be substitued in as German spetzle...and I love it! The meatballs are soft and filled with parsley and cheese, the sausage is hot and soft, too bad such a small serving. The Ravioli....gummy and forgettable. The eggplant parmessan.....decadent. I did have the Tiramisu....and I'll admit that anything with sugar, cream, and coffee sends me to heaven. Their version has a very custardly smooth cream/marscapone top....just lovely. I would also like to highlight the service that I've had here. The first time I dined there the most attentive young men serviced our table. Immediate bussing and drink refills. I was so astonished to see such young and pleasant teenagers. (Never happens any more!) However this second time I dined.....I felt like they were mosquito's watching me consume....so they could take away our dishes immediately. I like Mama Lousie......I love that they are close, family owned, affordable, cozy and have excellent staff. I will always recommend them! I have been here twice now. If the review was based solely off of customer service I would give this place 4 stars however I like good food so that's why I must say I have experienced much better. The food is really the issue, the last time I was here nothing tasted fresh and it left an unpleasant aftertaste. Overall the food is fast-food quality at a much higher price. The staff is very attentive making sure that your drinks are always full, clearing plates as you are finished and overall extremely polite. The owner makes his presence known and says hello to every table. The restaurant is really cute, very Italian themed decor; there is exposed brick, a running stone water fountain and really beautiful lighting. There is a couple over the top items that seem kitschier such as gold statues and a painted mural. There are two tv's in the wall not what I was expecting for an Italian dining experience with no bar. They were not busy only about five other tables so there was no wait. They serve beer and wine only no bar. My husband and I split the mussels for an appetizer ($8.50) and the lobster ravioli as the main dish ($15.25). Honestly I could do without both the soup and salad; however they come with every main dish. The salad is iceberg lettuce with radish slices a pepperoncini and a slice of tomato, I didnt have any and he didn't finish it. The minestrone is ok but mostly broth and shell noodles not many veggies just large pieces of celery and a few beans, we didn't finish this either. The mussels were strange they came on a half shell; usually mussels are served in their entire shell steamed open. Some were dried out and over cooked, some were fishy so didn't finish them. The lobster ravioli tasted like is was frozen food that had been reheated, we did finish this as we were both starving and there were three raviolis per person. The pasta was very dense, the filing was very chewy, and the sauce was basic tomato cream sauce with a ton of garlic. One good thing was the garlic knot which was crispy on the outside, and chewy on the inside. The server did split our main dish on two plates which is really nice and gave us each a garlic knot. I really like the effort from the staff to please the consumer. First time I came here I ordered the Chicken Fran chaise ($15.25). This is a breaded chicken breast cooked in lemon butter sauce, on Fettuccini Alfredo pasta. It's their house specialty and it was good. They have really large portions so I was only able to eat half. The chicken dish was why I decided to return last night and try something else, but obviously I was not impressed. read more

Ordered 2 large pies for pick up, the veg and the margarita pizza and were sorely disappointed. Mama Louise has average Italian food. That said, the value for what you get is superb. Every meal comes with homemade minestrone, salad, and garlic knots, all for the same price that comparable quality restaurants in the vicinity charge for just the entree. The parmigiana, I have had all three types, is tasty. The rolled lasagna is one of my favorites. Would I suggest Mama Louise's for a business dinner? Probably not, unless I knew that the other person enjoyed typical east coast family style Italian for dinner. read more

The owner made a point to ask me how things were and appreciate that I was there. I ordered spaghetti with meatballs, which was excellent. I've been on a hunt for a good red sauce and meatball and they had it. The entree came with soup and salad, which was a waste of calories. The soup was ok, but the salad was pretty blek. It had a bunch of lettuce, a tomato, a cucumber and some dressing. Nothing more. A fabulous house salad would be a nice touch. My son got pizza, which was really blah. It tasted like it had been microwaved. We will go back. I'd like to taste the calamari appetizer I've heard about and some of the wine. I really like how 'cozy' it was. This is the aurora version of fazolis. The food is lackluster and is definitely what you pay for; it's cheap and basic. This is not the fancy small Italian joint you try to get into for dates or valentines day dinner. You should definitely not drive out of your way to eat here. The Lemon Chicken is the amazingly good but, Ken's Cheesecake is the best I've ever had!!! Try the pumpkin cheesecake in the fall for a tasty surprise. Whenever we head home to Denver for a visit, we always make sure we have at least one trip to Mama Louise's. Ken is a wonderful host and the wait staff (who have been working there for at least 10 years) are more than attentive. The food is delicious - the faves are the Chicken Franchaise, mixed sauces with the spicy Italian sausage and the Sangria.
