After our visit to Muir Woods, we had Mamahuhu pegged for our lunch stop. I was looking forward to checking out Mamahuhu, which was Mister Jiu's chef, Brandon Jew's, casual restaurant. With four locations, this was the only one outside of San Francisco. The menu consisted of house specialties which could be made in combos, a chicken sando, salads, fried rice and noodles, sides and desserts. You order at the counter, find a booth or table and your order will be brought to your table. Self-service water station is in the dining room. Sweet and Spicy Chicken Sando - sandwiched in between a housemade pineapple bun was a very crispy rice-battered chicken thigh topped with a sweet and spicy huhu sauce and shredded cabbage. This sandwich was very juicy so expect the juicy/sauce to be on your fingers/hands. But the chicken never got soggy and was crispy to the last bite. The sandwich was delicious and wished the sandwich was bigger. Sweet & Sour Chicken rice plate - the crispy rice-battered chicken with pineapple chunks, red and green bell peppers and onions in a honey and hawthorn sweet and sour sauce. The sauce was not the typical reddish hue and there was just enough to coat and not overwhelm. The side of stir fried vegetables was topped with preserved black beans, which was salty. The couple handling the ordering and delivering of the food to the table were friendly. Food came out fairly quickly. Dining room was bright, clean and modern. Mamahuhu is the casual chinese restaurant from same chef of Michelin starred Mr. Jiu! This location is our goto spot when we're driving back from Marin to SF and craving chinese food. I've tried: - (must try!) sweet & spicy chicken sandwich - mapo tofu w mushroom - kung pao chicken - sweet & sour cauliflower - wok'd veg My fav is the spicy chicken sandwich with a pineapple bun twist! They nail the flavors of all the classic chinese american dishes, loading each dish with fresh veggies and is reasonably priced for the portions. Also highly recommend getting the jasmine tea soda!! we've been trying mamahuhu since it first opened in mill valley, and i think they've really stepped up their game. the food is consistently good (flavorful, not too greasy, filled with fresh veggies), the service is excellent, and whenever we are feeling tired after putting our kids to bed and want a quick ( under 20 minutes) filling option for food delivery that doesn't break the bank, mamahuhu checks the boxes. we recently decided to eat in the restaurant and loved loved loved it. i don't know why more families don't dine here. they have a great kids menu, a cute area in the back with kids tables/books/coloring, everything is so clean, and the service is awesome. for a town with too many overpriced "farm to table american bistro" options, mamahuhu is a welcome change of pace. we'll be back again soon! read more

One my list of a while, and I finally got a chance to try. The honey hawthorne chicken sandwich with perfectly crispy thigh meat. The nice fresh cabbage and sweet and sour sauce all tied it in with the fluffy pineapple bun. The hot and sour soup wasn't too hot or sour, and had so much in it. I also tried their mango jasmine ice tea with boba added, which was not too sweet and was refreshing. The inside was spacious and clean. And their service was nice and friendly. read more

We had watched an episode of check please Bay area and found this spot to be a place we wanted to tryout for the first time. And we did. So happy we did. The menu is easy and exactly what the ingredients are is what the dishes are. Flavorful, great sauces and spices, they have these drinks that are sparkling and refreshing I had one that had jasmine and anise star. I'll post the menu and our dishes price was great for the amount of food we were served. Local organic ingredients as well. The manager of this location is super friendly and nice and we spoke with her regarding our first time being there she was happy to welcome us. Earlier this week I read the Marin Independent Journal's review of Mamahuhu, a new Chinese restaurant that recently opened in downtown Mill Valley ("Mill Valley's Mamahuhu serves tasty, well-executed Chinese American cuisine" - http://bit.ly/3ItKCY6)). Among the dishes mentioned in the review was Mapo Tofu, one of my favorite Chinese dishes, so I decided to stop by for lunch today to give it a try. I had both the Mapo Tofu and the Mala Yolo Cucumber. It was the worst meal I have had in recent memory. I have had Mapo Tofu many times in many places and this one bore no resemblance to any of those. I am struggling to describe it -- a curious and unpleasant combination of spicy yet flavorless, with an odd undertone. There was even something off about the steamed rice. The cucumber dish had potential, although it proved to be insipid and more than 50% of the dish was celery, an ingredient not mentioned anywhere in the dish's description on the menu. Plus the service was abysmal. During the time I was there I asked three times for a takeout container and never received one. The only silver lining was that it was not too far into the meal when I decided there was no part of it that I wanted to take home. I understand that the name of the place literally means "horse horse tiger tiger" in Mandarin, but is used idiomatically to mean "so-so," "mediocre," or "careless." Based on my experience today, it appears they chose their name well. read more

I'm speechless. I ordered takeout, and wow--I've always avoided Chinese food because I could never find something I actually liked. But this? Mamahuhu completely changed my mind. The sweet & sour cauliflower was incredible--crispy on the outside, and then it just melted in your mouth in the best way. I didn't even know cauliflower could do that! The presentation was surprisingly pretty for takeout, and you could tell the flavors were thoughtfully crafted. Lives up to it's name, which translates to "so,so". or just average. The food is fresh and healthy enough. the price is right. It's just not very interesting, speaking of flavor. My friends paid $3.50 for a tea that was basically two or three dried flowers in a cup of hot water. We ordered takeout just a few days after they opened in the old Mill Valley Beer Works space. It's a casual restaurant with seating like you might find at a fast food restaurant. The order was on time, the staff was friendly and welcoming and the food was tasty. They're off to a great start. We tried a variety of things including the egg rolls, fried rice, chicken sandwich, soup, kung pao chicken, lo mein chrysanthemum salad, cucumber salad, fried rice and the sesame cake parfait. We liked it all though the cucumber salad is for fermented bean paste lovers. It's not for everyone (including me). Glad to see them in town! This will not be our last meal at Mamahuhu's! read more

I live in The City and order delivery from the 24th St location and always love it. I go to Marin quite a lot so I popped into the Mill Valley location and I may like it even better than 24th Street - the Gluten Free (YES YES YES!) sweet and sour chicken was a bit crunchier which I loved. Tragically they were sold out of the gluten free pot stickers! I think this happens a lot and I wish to say to management - do not let this happen! Step up production! The young lady the register was very nice and pleasant. She stopped by my table and all other tables once to make sure all was ok, which it was. I appreciate that they do not use toxic industrial seed oils - instead they use humane to wildlife palm oil (yes, there is such a thing) Interestingly they make their own MSG. Who knew! I like everyone else is familiar with that awful stuff. I MUST go online and see how one does this! With industrial MSG I feel horrible after . . .dry mouth, migraine like headache, and I'm super tired but not so with Mamahuhu's house made. Truly everyone must find instructions for making this because it does add a certain hard to explain flavor thing. As anyone who has Celiac, as does my husband as well as me, and we both had to give up so many foods so I curtsy and bow to Mamahuhu for knowing that the hardest food to eat out is Asian. Either they lie or just simply don't have anything - but Mamahulu has 2 dishes and those divine pot stickers which you can order online for your freezer. Serving the gluten intolerant community is to be applauded. And we look forward to more gluten free options - noodles! More dim sum like things. More meat dishes that are GF. Another thing I've noticed is that their food is not laden with soy sauce which I've always suspected is used much less in Asian countries than it is here. The flavors here a light, alive and not saturated with grease and soy sauce. The booths are nice and spacious - you aren't on top of others. The place is airy. I'm still Patty Paranoid about COVID and wish there was outside seating but I feel mostly safe here because of the layout. Food is tasty but heavily fried. One dish had some raw/undercooked chicken. That's not good. Possible food poisoning risk. Service was awful. Waitress refused to acknowledge raw chicken. Note to servers: If someone isn't happy with the food, don't argue with them, even if you disagree. Instead, offer a refund and apologize. Better to think about your reputation than to try to win an argument. Otherwise, place is clean and spacious, with a light Asian ambiance. What's happening with Mamahuhu? We order from here regularly and we liked their menu. They changed menu recently- to something not as good, in our opinion. But that is fine, we believe people like to try different foods. But recently they took away the spicy peanuts in the lazi chicken, replaced them with carrots. This is not lazi chicken anymore... we are very disappointed. I don't remember if that needs to be paid additionally, but the dish doesn't come with spicy peanuts by default anymore! My boyfriend and I had a wonderful and delicious dinner! I went in thinking, it would be mediocre but was blown away by the food AND the service! The cucumber salad was the best I've ever had. The chili oil on it was excellent- not spicy, but flavorful! The Chrysanthemum salad had such a yummy dressing and it was perfectly dressed. We sat down thinking it was a order and sit down- that is that. Unlike all the other order and sit restaurants, Harris and his coworker came up to us multiple times and checked in on our food and cleared out our plates for us. We also met the GM, Michelle. Oh dear, I was intrigued with the reviews that said: "unique spices, wonderful flavors,etc" Heres what I tasted: tomato sauce, vinegar and smoke flavoring in all the dishes. Thats it. I had to put chili sauce on everything just to drown out the overpowering tastes I mentioned. The fish dish smelled fishy too. Yuck! I have to agree with a lot of the other reviewers: Mamahuhu is a good value for the money, but the menu is limited and the flavors are not subtle. Be aware that the kung pao chicken is very spicy (and I like spicy food). The broccoli and beef was uninspired and the egg rolls were flabby. We ordered the entrees as rice plates. Even though the mains were piping hot in the bowls we were served, the rice that accompanied them was at best room temperature and could have been much hotter. This is definitely more of a lunch or take-out only place. The interior is not conducive to staying very long: the lighting is very bright, and the wooden booths are not particularly comfortable. read more
