We stopped at Mamak House on our way to the Liberty Science Center. First of all the service was top notch. We got there just before they opened for lunch and they were very gracious about it. They let us in early and seated us with a smile. We were also there with our little baby and the waitress was so sweet to him. I really appreciated how kind and patient they were with us. The restaurant is really no-frills but I still enjoyed the vibe. It seems like they have a lot of regulars, and the restaurant quickly filled up with large tables for lunch. We ordered the Hainanese Chicken, the Kari Mee, and the Roti Canai. I really liked the Hainanese Chicken and the rice it came with was delicious. It was cooked perfectly and was so tender and comforting. I also really enjoyed the Kari Mee. I was so flavorful and full of chicken and veggies. The broth was rich, and just what I expected. I also enjoyed the Roti Canai, but I feel like the bread was a little too crispy and we totally made a mess at the table. It was also hard to dip because it just kept flaking apart. Malaysian food in the Tri-State area is rarer than a sixth-floor apartment that's not a walk-up, so I really wanted to like Mamak. It has ample parking and tons of seating--but sadly, the food was uneven at best. We got: - Roti Telur: This was decent but could've had more green chilies. Despite dining with a Malaysian, I think we were served the roti at Western spicy levels. - Mamak Udang Mee Noodle Soup: Not bad. Could've used more shrimp, but there's never enough shrimp in these things. - Nasi Lemak: Bland. Greasy. Sigh-inducing. - Tofu Nyonya with Vegetable: Deep-fried bean curd chunks stir-fried with vegetables and red peppers. The menu said there'd be basil, but there was no basil. It was also way too salty. - Mamak Style Fried Rice: The menu said this was coconut rice, but I didn't taste anything nutty. Appreciated the shrimp and veggies, but it wasn't the least bit spicy....and the menu said there'd be spiciness! Le sigh. Service was fine, but it definitely goes over better if you can speak Cantonese. Sadly, we were told there are no actual Malaysians on staff anymore. Tried Mamak House and ended up loving several dishes here. The char kway teow is easily the best I've had in NJ -- real wok hei, smoky aroma, and well-balanced seasoning. The shrimp and seafood were fresh and cooked just right, not mushy at all. The fried chicken wings were another favorite. Thin, crispy batter, simple seasoning, and that nostalgic old-school Chinese fried chicken flavor. The salted fish eggplant claypot is on the heavier side, but in a good way. The salted fish pieces are large and extremely salty on their own, but once mixed into the sauce and eggplant, the dish becomes rich, savory, and comforting. If you like bold flavors, wok hei, and Southeast Asian-style cooking, this place is genuinely worth a visit. I would return for the char kway teow alone. read more

The lunch specials are worth a shot, with most listed at $11.95 on DoorDash. Char Kway Teow was solid. Spice enthusiasts might want to turn up the volume with sambal shrimp. Came to visit some friends and their newborn so we decided to order some take out. We don't have great Malaysian food near us so it's always a treat to find it elsewhere. Came to pick up and was greeted and promptly acknowledged as soon as I came in. Quickly got my food and had a pleasant interaction with the lady/Manager. tried all the standard fare like Roti canai, skewers, fried rice, char kway teow, etc. everything was delicious, including the oily rice. Hit the spot so well I forgot to take a picture. Was thinking about getting more to go for my trip home, but I will just have to come back. It's a decent option for the area. Been here twice already. Love the roti and soft shell crab. The crab really stands out here since the breading is lighter and you can taste the actual star of the dish (most other places bread it too much and all you taste is the fried breading). Their classics like pad Thai, etc are also on point. Service is great, everyone is friendly. Make is a great place when you want to explore more than your average Chinese take out. They offer you Malaysian you can't get in in a 10 mile radius from JC. Malaysian food isn't anywhere in Hudson County anymore. Satay closed down in Hoboken a decade ago, so this is a gem for those who miss Satay since it's closing. The closest is either New York's Panang or Panang in Saddle Brook. The staff is impeccable and kind. We take it for granted because it's minutes from the house, but surely it's a gem in disguise. read more

They weren't busy at all when we stopped by around 1pm on a Saturday. There's tons of options on their extensive menu so you will absolutely find something for everyone regardless of dietary needs. We started with the Roti Canai. The roti was crispy, flaky, and buttery. It paired nicely with the curry chicken dipping sauce which was sweet, aromatic, and tasty. My only complaint is that they only gave a single piece of chicken and single potato. That makes this a difficult appetizer to share and the ratio of roti to curry is a bit off. My absolute favorite bite here is the Char Kway Teow. It caught my eye on the menu and did not disappoint! It was smoky from the wok, slightly sweet, and slightly savory from the soy sauce. The shrimp & squid were super fresh, tender, and had a nice chew. I wish they had more shrimp as there were only 4 pieces. We were huge fans of Satay, a Malaysian restaurant that had served amazing food in Hoboken for years. Sadly, it closed a year or so ago, and we needed a similar spot to satisfy our cravings. I came across Mamak House a while back and had planned to visit it in-person. However, the other night I learned that they would deliver to our area, and we decided to do that instead. We wound up sharing an order of the Roti Canai. The flaky, oily pancake was served with a sweet curry dipping sauce that was filled with a few large pieces of chicken. Both items were delicious, particularly the curry, which was so flavorful that I decided to pour it over my Char Kway Teow, which was otherwise bland without it. The dish consisted of stir-fried, flat rice noodles with shrimp, squid, bean sprouts, eggs, soy sauce, and chili paste. The seafood seemed very fresh; however, I could not detect any spice at all, so the added curry was critical. My companion found his Thai Basil Noodle with Chicken similar unmemorable and boring. We had been so excited to find another Malaysian restaurant, but it, sadly, did not live up to Satay's legacy. This place is more Malaysian Chinese food rather than Malaysian Hawker food. So it's good for groups. They do have some of the standard hawker fair like Nasi Lemak and Char Kurt Teow. Really great dining experience at Mamak! Heard some wonderful things about the food and they didn't disappoint. We had arrived during a late dinner rush but were seated immediately. They have a great variety of Malaysian and Chinese specialties. Everything we ordered was definitely cooked fresh and came out very quickly. We started with a mango salad, honey squid, and roti canai. We also had ordered the beef with American broccoli, seafood pan fried noodle, and another noodle dish. Loved everything! I've been coming to this restaurant for years since they opened. My family and I are regulars now. All their staff are super friendly, especially Tiffany. Their roti canai, Malaysian curry puff, char kway teow, fried pearl noodles, peanut pancake, Thai sticky rice with fresh mango, Malaysian ice tea, and Malaysian lychee juice are all my go-tos. Can't go wrong with any of those. Although I highly recommend this place, I had to take off a star for the pricing. Being a regular for years, I have watched the prices rise and rise. However, besides the pricing, everything on their menu is flavorful. Definitely give this place a chance if you haven't already. If I had to choose an order for you, I'd pick the fried pearl noodles with a lychee juice. For dessert, definitely try the sticky rice with fresh mango. read more

The restaurant is spacious with lots of seating and there's parking on both sides. It is easy to just walk in and get a table. The portions are huge and the food is very flavorful. Roti canai is a classic and always a must get appetizer - some of the roti was a bit thin so it broke and was hard to get the sauce. However the curry sauce is super flavorful. Honey squid was crispy and addicting - would be a great snack for drinking but a bit too crispy for my taste. Kari Mee with Shrimp came with 5 jumbo shrimps in a rich, curry broth. Really good food at a reasonable price. Never noticed this place while driving on rt 440 but it came up on yelp while we were in the area & decided to give it a chance. Excellent service, friendly staff, clean and spacious location. Started with the roti canai, small appetizer, big taste in the excellent curry sauce, egg drop soup was really good, the clove really came out in the chilli Indian Chicken & the Mango Chicken was excellent. First time having the peanut pancake that went will with the fries ice cream. The only thing that wasn't impressive was the egg roll, granted they weren't bad, just nit impressive but I dipped them in the mango Chicken sauce which really turned it up. Very surprised. Don't judge a book by its cover in this case don't judge the external of the building and the location on a very busy industrial roadway. It was one of the top Malaysian meals that we have had in a long time very surprised to find this in Bayonne. As soon as we stepped in from the parking lot, we knew we were in a different location and the ethnic customer base confirmed we were going to have a good meal . We started off with an order of Tom Yum soup with seafood which had a nice bite. Next we followed that with a puff pastry order (4 in the order) the crust was flaky and a small amount of meet inside. Was okay; would order again. We ordered the rest off the lunch menu. Mango shrimp dish was excellent. This is not a review that I like to write. I read glowing reviews of Mamak House in a group. It's pretty out of the way for me but we happened to be passing by the area. Save your money and time unless there is really a dish you want to try. I ordered the Roti Canai, Half Hainanese Chicken, Char Kway Teow, Fish Porridge, Nasi Lemak... and most lacked flavor... it was bland! The fish porridge was the most decent, followed by the Nasi Lemak (I'm Asian but not Malaysian so don't trust me on this). There's a good variety of vegetarian options here, which is a bit rare with Malaysian food. I tried the vegetarian golden fish, which had some strong flavors from the five spice and nori, a crispy exterior, and chewy interior. This was a cool diversion from the usual dishes I try. read more

We have gotten take out from Mamak House a few times and generally like our food. There are several types of cuisines on the menu so if you want Chinese and your partner wants Thai, there are plenty of dishes to chose from. As a vegetarian, I appreciate that they have a vegetarian section of their menu. Last time I had the Kari Sayur (#61) and I liked it; there was a large variety of vetables in the dish which made it very unique. The vegetable Thai springrolls are very small and do not have much filling, so I wouldn't recommend them. Aside from skipping the Thai spring rolls, I would suggest ordering extra rice as they portion exactly 1 cup of rice for each main dish. I guess I am spoiled and require extra rice with my curries, so I order extra rice and am happy. I would absolutely love if they added a vegetarian potato curry version of Roti Canai to their menu. read more

There's not many Malaysian places in the neighborhood and MAMAK did knock it out of the park! They deserve a 4.5/5 overall. This place surprised me with their version of the prawn mee, called the mamak udang mee 4.5/5: their protein of pork & shrimp was so tender and juicy - highly recommend this dish The roti telur 4.5/5: was also super delish with the spicy curry combo. Ugh I hate writing reviews like these. I really really really wanted to give these guys a 5 star rating and call it a day. The restaurant itself was clean and had ample parking. The folks who work here are incredibly friendly, super attentive and fast to handle any issues. Generally speaking, everything but the food was spot on. But the food ... woof. Given that I'm so far removed from my days living in Singapore and hitting up hawker centers left and right, I'm always desperate to find some SGP/Malaysian chow in the area that can taste remotely as good as what I had there. That's a tall order given that nearly every place I ate at other than say Taste Good in Elmhurst and maybe some of the menu in Penang in the city were all crap. Sadly this place didn't live up to the expectations I had, which were muted based on my general experience. We ordered a bunch of stuff given our excitement. The roti canal was ok but the curry itself was not flavorful. It was also kind of weak/soupey, which would be a common theme with the rest of the food. The roast pork/wonton soup wasn't prepared like the way you get cha siew see in Asia, it was basically a pork wonton dish with noodles on the side (for the "dry" option). The wontons also didn't taste good at all and didn't do my stomach any favors later that night. The Malay belacan (Malay fun guang) was also a huge disappointment. Same issue, the vegetables were fresh but the sauce was absolutely flavorless which is shocking for something as rich as sambal sauce. It simply wasn't added enough, or the sauce was too diluted. It was flavorless which is a big no-no for this kind of dish. The satay tofu appetizer with peanut sauce was also absolute garbage, sad to say. It was poorly prepared, overly fried and it basically vaporized the essence of the dish itself which should be full of peanut sauce and brimming with cucumbers and bean sprouts. Instead it was a fried triangular hockey puck that was terrible to bite into, let alone swallow. The shrimp noodles were also absolutely terrible. The flavor of the soup was completely off and it was completely bombarded by a pile of pork. I've never had any iteration of this dish that used this kind of loose pork with just a few shrimps in what should be a mostly shrimp based noodle dish with some fish cakes to boot. I've come across some versions with maybe a slice of pork or two but not like this kind of random hot pot-like meat that was filling this dish. Absolutely a big no-no here. We also ordered the pad Thai for kicks - nothing unique or special here. The least jarring was actually the fish congee that we got for the kids. I also ended up eating some since I really wasn't a fan of the other food. I do like how they have all the right elements in the menu for a Malaysian joint. It was just disappointing that so many of the dishes we ordered missed the mark so badly in terms of taste. I don't expect things to be fully authentic here, but the flavors were just so off that people it will likely be jarring to some folks who are expecting somewhat accurate SE Asian flavors. Mamak House is so good!! It's a chinese malaysian restaurant literally in the middle of nowhere, but it's so worth it to visit this restaurant and try their dishes! For 4 people, we ordered way too much, but each dish was distinct in flavor and I really enjoyed all of them. I don't think you can go wrong here. Ordered two food to go from doordash. In terms of take out experience, timing estimate is bad. Order shown as completed but there's 5 people in front of me that's still waiting for food. No one asked about my order until 5-10mins later. They looked to be under staffed and the waitress was apologetic. Meal wise, I like the prawn mee noodle the most. It's flavorful and the portion is generous. For Hainanese chicken rice, i got lots of rice which is fragrant but received 6 pieces of boney chicken. Would be better if the chicken portion was more. Our hostess had preselected the dinner menu and we were so lucky to enjoy her favorites: dumplings, Chinese broccoli, duck, too many to list. Situated next to NJ-440, this is an excellent place for trying some Malaysian delight. The is surprisingly bug inside, everything's shiny and new, lots of parking space. They have a large menu, including paper takeout ones. We ordered our fav Roti Canai for appetizers, alongside chicken satay and tom yum soup. Loved the canani, sauce was delicious. The satay was cooked well too, came with peanut sauce on the side. I was disappointed with the tom yum, it was missing the lemongrass flavor me. The was more creamy and thick, I am used to the thin lemon flavor style. For entree we got the seafood with curd, some green vegetables and the Ayam Rendang (dark meat chicken with special curry sauce). I loveeed the Rendang, a very unique dish, never saw it in other Malaysian or Thai restaurants. The curry is creamy but not spicy. Chicken is delicately soft. Because there is a limited number of Malaysian restaurants in NJ, Mamak House didn't disappoint. Having traveled to Malaysia recently, I was craving for some good Malaysian food. My go to is Char Kuey Tiao, Roti Canai and Ayam Rendang. But there are so many other dishes I wish I could have ordered them too. So if you are wondering about Mamak House, go for it ! There aren't really any Malaysian restaurants around the general JC area, so I was excited when I discovered this Malaysian/Chinese/Asian fusion spot! Mamak House offers a surprisingly large menu of authentic dishes, all at very reasonable prices. Family-style sharing is the way to go here to try different items. During my last visit I came with one other person, and we had a hard time deciding what two dishes we wanted for dinner... everything looked so good! We ended up sharing the Kari Mee (spicy lemongrass, coconut curry noodles) and Char Kway Teow (stir fried noodles), and both were flavorful and aromatic, with a good level of spice to it. The restaurant itself is large and clean and tables are nicely spaced out. I noticed lots of takeout orders, and it looks like they have great lunch specials deals as well. Will be back! read more

I ordered a pad Thai through uber eats. The instructions specific said it was made of bean sprouts and tofu. When we received the order the Pad Thai was made of chicken. After we received the order, we called the restaurant and ask them to change the pad Thai and they refused because it was our fault for not specify we wanted tofu instead of chicken. The order on the menu didn't say anything about choosing between chicken or tofu. This is the first and last time I will order from this place. The manager then said if you don't want the chicken you have to call ahead and instruct them. Their menu options should allow the customer to choose the add one.
