The scallion pancake was a bit small but it was super delicious. The chicken katsu had an interesting tangy flavor and was nice and crispy. Service (4/5): Top notch service with super friendly staff. Really friendly waitress who was helpful and great! Only issue we had was we were asked if we wanted a bread refill for the Whipped Ricotta and we didn't know it's cost $5 which surprised us a bit on the check. Jane Doe is a bit hit or miss for me, but there's one dish that truly stands out: the prawns. They're grilled nicely with good texture, but the real reason to order them is the sauce. It's rich and savory, finished with scallion oil and chili oil, which adds fragrance and a subtle heat that keeps it from feeling too heavy. I honestly wanted bread just to mop up the sauce. We also tried the crispy mushrooms, which were pretty average on their own and a little heavy from the cheese, but once dipped into the prawn sauce, they actually became much more enjoyable. The lumache pasta uses large shell-shaped pasta with a strong olive oil flavor and was slightly too salty overall, though the pork itself was cooked at a good temperature. The pork katsu was the biggest letdown. Despite looking impressive in size, the pork is pounded extremely thin, and the breading is thicker than the meat, resulting in a dry texture. This place is amazing!!!! We had a reservation for 4 so we didn't have a problem getting seated right away on a Sunday night. My SIL comes here often so we tried it out. When you first walk in, the ambiance is beautiful! The exterior and interior really stand out and is such a vibe. We ordered 3 apps: the whipped ricotta (you can get extra bread), the octopus carpaccio and crispy mushrooms. Soooo amazing! My husband ordered the tagliatelle and I ordered the mafaldine. The Italian Japanese fusion has become a popular food trend, so nice to see it locally. I had their market fish of the night branzino, it was perfectly cooked and served beautifully. This gem is in an old garage that was recreated into a nice elegant spot. We didn't have a reservation so we sat at the bar as we weren't sure how long we would have to wait till the table cleared. We were given both sparkling and distilled water. I have been here a few times and enjoyed it everytime. My favorite is the linguine and pesto sauce taste fresh with the herbs. Last time I went I ordered the kfc slider and enjoyed all the flavors in it the pickled slaw and the gochujang aioli really amplifies the flavor. I believe they do change some of the pasta dishes seasonally. I think for cocktails we got the amber and it was delicious. The espresso martini was great as well and would recommend to give it a try. Been trying to get here for the last three weeks but got preempted by threat of snow or actual snow the last two weekends. Finally made it Saturday as a party of seven. We were seated at a table by the front door which was great because it felt like we were tucked away nice and cozy in our own corner of the restaurant where conversation could be heard and no one had to shout. Sorry for the lack of pics but we ordered four appetizers; whipped ricotta, tuna crudo, steak yakitori, and KFC sliders, none of which I did I take a pic of. All were delicious but if I were to rank them it would be steak yakitori first. KFC slider second by a whisker, tuna crudo third and the whipped ricotta fourth. Entrees ordered were Mafaldine, Branzino. Two of the chicken dish, Lumache and two of the scampi dish with prawns. Such a sexy spot! Our favorite bar in town suggested this location as #1 on their list. Dimly lit restaurant. Great vibe with vinyls on display as par5 of the decor. You'll hear frank ocean, childish gambling, and Biggie on their playlist. Super friendly staff and the service is great! Dang, this place would be right at home in the trendiest Soho block. Jane Doe is probably the best place in downtown JC when you want a date night, girls night, boys night, impress-the-in-laws night, or anything in between. The vibes are dark and sleek, the music is upbeat without being too loud, and the food....man, the food.... Asian influences reign supreme throughout the menu, with a strong emphasis on scallions. Now, I hate scallions. I think they're the devil's herb. But somehow, they worked here. Like with the Scallion Pancake, which is unlike any scallion pancake you'll find anywhere. It came topped with sauteed shrooms and scallions, and I effing LOVED it! I ate every bite of those nasty scallion strips and enjoyed every second. How??? Both my Mafaldine and my friend's Scampi were huge and loaded with all the good stuff. If you want smoky and meaty, get the Mafaldine, and if you want spicy and shrimpy, get the Scampi. For dessert the S'mores Semifreddo will impress by being not too sweet, while the Limoncello Olive Oil Cake with mascarpone frosting will generally be the crowd pleaser. My husband and I have been coming to Jane Doe for years and genuinely love it it's been one of our go-to spots. So much so that I brought a group of girlfriends there recently to celebrate a birthday, and I was excited to introduce them to a place I've always had great experiences with. The cocktails, apps, and overall vibe were fantastic, as always. But unfortunately, most of the entrees missed the mark. Three of the pastas (rigatoni and short rib) had a noticeably smoky flavor that didn't seem intentional, and it wasn't something anyone at the table enjoyed. My steak was great, but overall it was surprising given how consistently good our past meals have been in the past. I didn't raise it in the moment, I assumed they just weren't hungry from the apps, but the feedback afterward was consistent, and I felt it was worth sharing. It seemed like something may have been off in the kitchen that night. I'm sharing this as someone who truly loves your restaurant and wants to keep recommending it. Jane Doe fits into the neighborhood beautifully, with its swanky decor and indoor-outdoor seating. I have been twice, and we've always been seated promptly and had friendly servers. The menu is an eclectic fusion of Italian & Japanese flavors, and I appreciate the concept. The execution, however, was a bit off... Whipped Ricotta: huge portion with tons of soft bread. It was a bit too salty but somehow bland at the same time. The peperonata did not add much to the dish in terms of both flavor and texture - could have used a bit more acidity to it. Rigatoni: speaking of acidity, this dish had too much. I am a lover of all vinegar but this balsamic glaze was too overpowering for this dish. There was too much going on with the sausage ragu + scallions + whipped ricotta. The textures did not mesh very well together and even if you tried mixing the ricotta with the sauce more, you couldn't get away from the balsamic. Linguine: not a bad dish but incredibly unimpressive. Pesto sauce was not very well-mixed so some bites were more lemony, some bites more pesto. Tagliatelle: beautiful presentation with the bone marrow included, but felt they could have distributed the bone marrow fat a bit better instead of leaving it in one chunk. Was a bit too oily, but the pasta was perfectly al dente. Mafaldine: probably the best of the dishes we tried over two visits, but was way too salty. Another great downtown restaurant by the owners of Orale and Dullboy! The set up seems high casual - Nice for a date! The front of the shop is open like a garage, and it's a nice way to get fresh air in. Drinks are strong and tasty. Ordered the Lupe and Yuki's cup. Yuki's Cup strawberry gin was tasty and the ginger helps balance out the sweetness. The Prawn was delicious, but note that you only get 3 for $18 - Would not get these at this price point again unfortunately. Split the Linguine which was delicious. $22 for a reasonable serving. The sunflower seed pesto sauce was delicious, and the linguine noodles were thick and cooked perfectly. The sunflower seeds in the dish were a nice touch, and they are generous with the topping of breadcrumbs. As a vegetarian, I did find this place lacking vegetarian options and flexibility. For example, I ordered spaghetti pomodoro and was told I can change the pasta type (ie- rigatoni) which I didn't understand why. I don't know where to start with the accolades of this restaurant. Let us begin with the ambiance: you enter a warmly light room that is busy with lively conversation, great smelling food, chic decor...you think "am I in New York?" My friend got the Mod-tini (like an espresso martini but better), I got American Trilogy (like an old fashioned but it had apple brandy in it) and my last friend for The Silvia (a pineapple based mocktail that she adored). Then the food came...EVERYTHING we ate was amazing. We started with their homemade garlic bread. This bread reminded me of homemade pita with a garlic confit spread all over. IT WAS SO WARM AND PILLOW-Y. We also shared the polenta cake that came with a parmesan foam (mouthwatering) and melt in your mouth steak yakitory skewers. We then split 2 pasta dishes: Homemade tagliatelle with bone marrow in a cacio pepe sauce and homemade mafaldine in a japanese curry vodka sauce with chicken. Both pastas were amazing in their own way. The bone marrow elevated the cacio pepe to the perfect degree, and the curry vodka sauce had an amazing depth of flavor and umami. Lastly, it was my birthday, so we split the limoncello olive oil cake. Wow...I would describe this cake as an Italian tres leches. It was so wet, dense and DELICIOUS...I couldn't stop eating it. My girlfriend in Jersey City has been wanting to try this new restaurant since it opened, so we went this past weekend with our other girlfriend. I was a little apprehensive given how many negative reviews I read about the steep cancellation/reservation change fees on here. In one review the business manager replied that there's only 3 tables of 4 in the restaurant - to that I would say, false! One side of the restaurant is all banquette seating - you could make a table for 4, 6, 8, you name it! Be careful when plugging in the address into Uber / google maps - There's Jane Doe and Jane DO both on Newark Ave, so easy to choose the wrong one if you are not careful. The inside of the restaurant is very pretty and moody. It's a great atmosphere for a date night. I wish everything else here lived up to the aesthetic. The food menu is limited and the drink menu is complicated if you are not familiar with the types of alcohol and ingredients. The thing that really ruined our experience though was our server. In this geographic area, I feel like you rarely get attentive service these days. Our waitress was the extreme opposite - she would not leave us alone. She repeatedly interrupted us and was very socially awkward. I don't know if it was because she was trying to rush us along or if she was simply clueless on social cues. She couldn't answer our questions about the menu either. We decided to share the white bean dip (based on the positive reviews I saw here) and the sunchokes 3 ways. The dip was delicious - they charged us 4 bucks because we needed a few extra pieces of bread to finish it. For mains, my friend and I each got the mafaldine and my other friend got the rigatoni. The dishes were okay, different. None of us were blown away - I don't think I'll be back here again anytime soon, unless it's just for a drink at the bar while I wait for a table next door at Cellar 335. read more

Let me just say the pasta was fantastic. Beyond my expectations for what is, essentially a simple dish. I got the spaghetti and my friend got the linguini. A short walk from the main downtown area, I had high hopes for Jane Doe as I've enjoyed other establishments from the same ownership. The food and drinks were very good and my group had a great time. I was thinking this would become a regular go-to spot but then my friend got charged a $100 no show fee because we thought we needed 2 tables and only needed 1. Keep in mind they quickly filled the additional table, we spent a lot of money on food and drinks, and the host said "no problem, but let us know more ahead of time next time". The surprise the next day was unpleasant and ends up outweighing the good time we had. There are lots of spots in Jersey City and plenty more coming so I'm not in any rush to return. We wanted to try a new spot in JC and came here when it was quiet. We needed a reservation even though there were dozens of tables that remained unoccupied the entire hour we were there!!! Bad customer service!!! They had us sit at the bar where it's not really cozy and sadly the menu is really limited for such a great place! No basics and no fool-proof dishes like sandwiches or wraps, French fries ect. Most of the dishes were fusion based but you have to have a pallet for the flavors. I ordered the rigatoni dish and the pasta was UNDERCOOKED!!! Ok, we call it aldente - but they really didn't cook it at all. The sauce was tasty and had some meat in it but I didn't complain about the hard pasta because that's how some places prepare their rigatoni. There's a basic drinks menu and the good news is that the staff is really attentive-- but the food selection (or lack there of) is NOT worth it!
