This is the second time eating Empanadas so I don't have too much too compare these with. I went here because I wanted to try different types of cuisine around NYC more authentic stuff. So I came across this place. I had got the Meal that had the 6 corn empanadas meat & veggie. They were tasty the crust was perfect. The 3 types of hot sauce were very good also. Then I tried one of the sweet one fig, caramel & cheese . They turned out very good. The service was good they take cash only. Mamas empanadas is really great. The convenience of getting empanadas is also so easy that my family uses them as little appetizers for any party. They have two types of empanadas, the regular sized and the cocktail empanadas. The regular sized are kind of big and they seem to be more for a meal rather than an appetizer. They also have three kinds (that I know of) which are chicken, beef, and cheese. I'm not so hot about the cheese ones, but that's just my preference. The beef and chicken ones are so amazing. They come with two sauces to dip or pour (yes, pour into) the empanadas. The green sauce is really spicy, it has a slightly bland taste and seems to be solely for spicy-ness. The read sauce is my favorite. It has a really great flavor as well as the spice so it's the best of both worlds. There's also a mayo-ketchup which is pretty self explanatory which I've never had. The ease of order is pretty good too, just call up and order cocktail (make sure to specify that you want cocktail ones) with a corn shell, it's really just the more classic empanada shell. I went to Mama's Empanadas yesterday evening because my son was DYING for an empanada. Since we were nearby, I decided to give them a try. Seating is minimal, but that's cool...it wasn't crowded at quarter to 8pm and there was space for us to stay and eat. I was overwhelmed with the selection of empanadas...50 FLAVORS!!?? That's crazyyy lol. So of course, I took forever to pick what I wanted, because I always do....I'm an indecisive female. My son on the other hand, already had his pick: Chicken and Beef. Simple, I know. So finally, I made my selection.....I opted for the Biagra (Seafood: Shrimp, Scallops and Crab) and the Reggaeton (Arroz con Gandules and I think some meat, I cant remember lol). I also threw in a sweet empanada for my son and I to try out. I picked the Sweet Yellow Plantain and Cheese. Not simple....I know. Our wait wasn't TOO long.....though I was starving, I didn't die of hunger. About 15 minutes later, and Finally our order was ready. I was happy that each baggie was stamped with the flavor...took the guesswork out of seeing who got what. Very nice Mama, very nice. We picked the GREEN sauce and 2 drinks and our total was 13 bucks...not bad at all. I paid with credit card, which made me happy because I was NOT about use that ATM that looked like a safe embedded in the wall...nahhhh bro!! Okay, Now to the verdict on each empanada: Beef: My son tore it up....with the green sauce slathered on it. He finished it fast and put two thumbs up. That's good enough for me :) Chicken: He didn't even finish it because he didn't like it. I took a bite....and I was in agreeance, it was a little blah. Even with the sauce, I wasn't too enthused. Not BAD, but I've had better. Biagra: I like, I like. It had some yellow kinda sauce mixed in with the seafood and I'm not certain what it was, but it was pretty good. I poured green sauce on that too.... Reggaeton: MY FAVE out of the bunch. The arroz con gandules was seasoned well and the SALSA VERDE made it pop even more...I'm buying that one again for sure!! :-P Sweet Plantain and Cheese: Pleasantly surprised....that combo works very well!! It was a sweet finish to our meal...well MY meal, because my son wasn't too fond of this one. He said "Mommy.....its too sweet".....well YEAH its a SWEET PLANTAIN darling lmao. Been a fan for years. It's funny how bad service can sour things. I ordered 2 trays and a bunch of extras for a small party. Was told to come at 10 am and she wrote it on the receipt to pick it up. When I called they weren't ready. Was told to come at 1130am. Gave them an extra 45 minutes until 1215pm and when I arrived order was still not ready. Didn't even get an apology. Last time I'm coming to this place. It's sad bc I enjoyed this place but if you can't handle a party platter then don't offer. Own your business and if you foul it up then do right by your customers. read more

The corn empanadas have a thicker than usual crust than I prefer and the service is often really bad but they're really close and 24-hours. The service is usually sllloooowww. (Today I waited 30 minutes with a friend for our 2 separate orders!.) This is a novelty empanada place with their gimmick being a bunch of flavors that make them stand out from the plethora of other Colombian bakeries in the neighborhood that have better empanadas with standard fillings. I like the broccoli and cheese and beef. The chicken is too dry and the rice and beans too dense. The scene is interesting, though, especially in the wee morning hours. Firstly, I called up to make an order and they immediately put me in hold for over 10 minutes, after hanging up I proceed to called back and they did the same thing. Another awful thing is the waiting time when placing an order they usually take at least twenty to thirty minutes to get the order ready. After reading all the good reviews I was hype to actually go here. Me and two friends called in our order (based on fellow yelper recommendations) and we're told they would be ready in 10 mins. The person that took our order over the phone was very pleasant as well. We ordered 2 wheat spinach and cheese, 2 wheat chicken parmesan, 2 oven baked chicken, 2 corn rice and beans, 2 corn veggies, 1 wheat mac and cheese. Spinach and cheese was good, oven baked chicken was dry, rice and beans...ehh, veggies...decent, mac and cheese...disappointing. Only because it was Kraft mac n cheese, or maybe I was expecting too much...whatever, I didn't enjoy it. The chicken parm was my favorite one. I'm a huge fan of empanadas and this place takes them to a whole new level. Cheap and tasty can't ask for more than that. Don't bother with the normal beef, chicken or cheese. I tried the cheese steak and my fiance enjoyed the Italian calzone. Food wise they have so much to offer other than the different types of empanadas and I would go back to try more and the other dishes. I tried the corn broccoli and cheese, cuban, and one of their dessert emapandas, the one with fig, cameral, and cheese. Broccoli and chesse and the fig, cameral, and cheese are to die for. The cuban one is okay. I prefer the emapandas that's made with corn. It's crunchier and has a thicker crust. However, there's a lot more choices for fillings with the wheat emapandas.
