Found this little gem by accident. I was looking for a Jamaican restaurant on Pleasant Hill Road and then came across this. The food was amazing, bursting with flavors of the tropics and enough heat to make your nose run. We tried the jerk chicken, pork, and wings. It all came with a stir fried cabbage that was delicious and peas and rice with an incredible sauce poured on it. Of course a couple of plantains too. The service was great, the guy who helped us was so personable and gave recommendations and even had us try the hibiscus drink they make. You can tell a place is quality when everyone that comes in knows them. It looked like the local hangout. Prices are extremely reasonable and portions are huge. This spot is great for Jamaican food! I had several questions and the cashier man took the time to explain what the different foods and options were. Ordered: 1 small goat curry plate Substitute rice with cooked vegetables +$ 1 order of 6 fried plantains The curry was delicious, goat cooked til tender. I went one weekend and had the Jerk chicken meal. I don't know what happened to my previous post, so here's another one. It was EXCELLENT!! the meat just fell over the bone! I went yesterday and had the Oxtail meal with the gravy on the rice, and another fantastic dish! The other restaurant my neighbor and I went to served the cabbage raw, but Mama's was cooked. If you want great tasting home-cooked food, you've got to try this hidden gem. I asked what they would recommend and the lady taking my order gave great recommendations. I had the brown stewed chicken (lunch special size) and wow, was it good. I LOVED the steamed cabbage. The rice and peas (beans) were tasty. I had no problem eating this off the bone because the meat just fell off. I devoured my lunch. I had a jerk pork (I think) pastry pocket thing (patty). It was decent. The ends were a little plain because the filling was in the middle, but that happens when you get something hand made. It was just a tiny bit spicy in a very good way. Went here based on a recommendation from my Jamaican coworker. Of course I would take his advice... he's Jamaican!!! I've driven by this place a gazillion times and never noticed it. I wanted jerk chicken but they only serve dark meat for all of their chicken dishes, so that wasn't gonna work. I decided to try the oxtails. They were very pricey like pricey to the point where I almost said never mind. But I went for it anyway. Those oxtails were the best oxtails I have ever had... hands down. They were flavorful, moist, tender... they were amazing. Staff was friendly. Plenty of parking. Please try this place. I would've given 5 stars if they carried white meat. read more

I'm not sure if it's fair that I have a baseline for specialty restaurants. It's imperative to have these accompaniments before we can truly critique the rest. Mexican restaurants must have good salsa Burger joints must have good fries Jamaican restaurants must have good peas and rice. The peas and rice from Mama's were bland and unappetizing . I really enjoyed the jerk chicken but couldn't get past the peas and rice. Hubby rated his curry goat 3/5. Stopped in today to grab lunch. Although oxtails are on the lunch menu they still charge almost $25 for the plate which includes maybe 3 oxtails, rice & beans, and cabbage. Oxtails: greasy and salty, mostly fat, not tasteful at all. Rice & Beans: mostly rice, maybe five beans total, not tasty. Cabbage: horrible. Overcooked....tasted like it sat in water all night. Well we r staying at LA Quinta next door and saw this on Yelp so here we are!! I opted of course for the Oxtails!! And the Bf is curried goat today! Two Modelo's for the boy and an Island Mango drink for me. After my favorite ox tail lunch my drink was perfectly sweet to counteract the salt and spice ! I tried his goat and I'm not a fan of curry but THAT I could eat (some). It was spicier than mine. The hot sauce was on the table and it was a Jamaican kind. After trying oxtails at International Roti House, I had to have more. My partner, knowing how much I was craving oxtails, took me to Mama's. Mama's is located across from some office buildings close to Duluth Hwy and Satellite Blvd. We both ordered a small order of oxtails. Each order comes with red beans and rice, cabbages, and plantains. All components were well-seasoned. The oxtails were tender and delicious! I couldn't stop eating them. Will need to return to try the jerk chicken and brown stewed chicken as previous reviews had raved about it. Interior has booths and small tables for seating. The ladies were prompt and attentive with our order. Parking-wise, you shouldn't have an issue, unless you're coming here during peak lunch hours. read more

For example: -The large orders of Brown stewed chicken and curry goat were very tasty but very skimpy on the portion size. In fact, we ordered the whole fish afterwards because we were still hungry. -For $18.99, the whole red snapper ended up being a small fish for the price. -Ordering is a little confusing. You are not sure if order at the counter and sit at a booth or if you will be served. We ordered at the counter, but then found that there was some table service. Simple signage would clear this up. This could be more of a taste preference. I found the flavor here to be very good, but not as WOW as compared to a place like Mango's in downtown. I haven't made a post in a while and this is a GREAT reason to leave a review. My wife and I are visiting the Atlanta area and we often choose to avoid the downtown area. While staying in Duluth we found this gem. We ordered the jerk chicken . It came with beans and rice, cabbage, plantain, and a pocket. It was so good we are looking to go again before we board the plane. It's located in an upscale strip mall area. It has limited seating , we chose to do take out. I was in the mood for jerk chicken being from Miami I love me some jerk chicken and rice and peas with some cabbage but what I got from here was not worth my $10. The flavor on the chicken was not there and you can see on the piece of chicken leg that it was not cleaned well because the feather was still on there. This place is pretty good and authentic! I usually go to Golden Krust in Lithonia or Kool Runnings but this place is closer to me so I figured I would just try it out. It's owned and ran by a family who also runs the lounge next door (connected to restaurant). Portions are very big even if you get the medium size vs the large one. Pricing is very fair, comparable to other Jamaican restaurants. Location/parking: it's deeper in Duluth, on exit 105, past pleasant hill. It's apart of a plaza with plenty of parking and easy to find Inside: very casual with tables and booths on the left side of the restaurant when you come in. It's nothing fancy but still clean. You order at the front window and they'll bring the food to you if you're eating there in to-go boxes. Food: all lunch and dinner entrees come with rice (regular white or rice & beans), cabbage, and a plaintain. The rice was very soft and plenty but the cabbage portion was very small. You also only get one small thin sliver of plaintain which was kinda dry, definitely one of the worst ones I've had. We ordered the following entrees: - brown stew chicken: $7.99 for smaller size. this is my all time favorite Jamaican dish, the one here was very good and flavorful. The meal was nice and tender but I just felt it's gravy was just a hint too salty for me. - jerk pork: $9.99 for smaller size. meat was very flavorful/well seasoned and tender. It's gravy is pretty spicy so good or bad depending on how much jerk you can haha - beef patty: it costed $2.10 for one which is very reasonable, and it was my favorite thing from here They also have homemade lemonade, fruit punch, and sorrel! Although it was my first visit, I could already tell she knows what she's doing in the kitchen because better than half the clientele that walked through her doors during my time here were Jamaican. Tried this place for the first time today. I usually go to Kingston 30 by Sugarloaf Mills, but I wanted to give Mama's a try since it was closer. Came around 1pm on a weekday, and it was pretty busy, but the orders were coming out quick. I ordered for takeout. Reading the reviews, I didn't opt for the mini lunch portion since everyone says its way too small. I ordered the large jerk chicken with rice and peas, cabbage and plantains. The chicken was seasoned perfectly. Perfectly spicy as well! The rice and peas and plantains were normal, just like any other Jamaican restaurant. I also ordered a chicken patty on the side.
